Palladium-Catalyzed Synthesis of N,N-Dimethylanilines via Buchwald–Hartwig Amination of (Hetero)aryl Triflates

H2 O ⋅ B(C6 F5 )3 -Catalyzed para-Alkylation of Anilines with Alkenes Applied to Late-Stage Functionalization of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Anilines are core motifs in a variety of important molecules including medicines, materials and agrochemicals. We report a straightforward procedure that allows access to new chemical space of anilines via their para-C-H alkylation. The method utilizes commercially available catalytic H2 O ⋅ B(C6 F5 )3 and is highly selective for para-C-alkylation (over N-alkylation and ortho-C-alkylation) of anilines, with a wide scope in both the aniline substrates and alkene coupling partners. Readily available alkenes are used, and include new classes of alkene for the first time. The mild reaction conditions have allowed the procedure to be applied to the late-stage-functionalization of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including fenamic acids and diclofenac. The formed novel NSAID derivatives display improved anti-inflammatory properties over the parent NSAID structure.

Palladium-catalyzed C-H dimethylamination of 1-chloromethyl naphthalenes with N,N-dimethylformamide as the dimethyl amino source

Palladium-catalyzed remote C-H dimethylamination of 1-chloromethylnaphthalenes using N,N-dimethylformamide as the dimethylamino source is described for the first time. The dimethylamination took place exclusively at the 4-position of 1-chloromethylnaphthalenes in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran under mild conditions to afford 1-(N,N-dimethylamino)-4-alkylnaphthalenes in good to high yields. The halogen atom remained intact during the dimethylamination of 1-chloromethylnaphthalenes. A P,N bidentate ligand was conveniently synthesized and successfully utilized as the ligand in the Kumada-Corriu reaction.

Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings: On the Importance of the Catalyst Quantity Descriptors, mol % and ppm

This Review examines parts per million (ppm) palladium concentrations in catalytic cross-coupling reactions and their relationship with mole percentage (mol %). Most studies in catalytic cross-coupling chemistry have historically focused on the concentration ratio between (pre)catalyst and the limiting reagent (substrate), expressed as mol %. Several recent papers have outlined the use of “ppm level” palladium as an alternative means of describing catalytic cross-coupling reaction systems. This led us to delve deeper into the literature to assess whether “ppm level” palladium is a practically useful descriptor of catalyst quantities in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Indeed, we conjectured that many reactions could, unknowingly, have employed low “ppm levels” of palladium (pre)catalyst, and generally, what would the spread of ppm palladium look like across a selection of studies reported across the vast array of the cross-coupling chemistry literature. In a few selected examples, we have examined other metal catalyst systems for comparison with palladium.

Dual-Functional Enantiomeric Compounds as Hole-Transporting Materials and Interfacial Layers in Perovskite Solar Cells

In this paper, we describe the application of the enantiomeric compounds YLC-1-YLC-4, each featuring a bulky spiro[fluorene-9,9'-phenanthren]-10'-one moiety, as both hole-transporting materials (HTMs) and interfacial layers in both n-i-p and p-i-n perovskite solar cells (PSCs). These HTMs contain an enantiomeric mixture and a variety of core units linked to triarylamine donors to extend the degree of π-conjugation. The n-i-p PSCs incorporating YLC-1(a) exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.15% under AM 1.5G conditions (100 mW cm^-2); this value was comparable with that obtained using spiro-OMeTAD as the HTM (18.25%). We obtained efficient and stable p-i-n PSCs having the dopant-free structure indium tin oxide (ITO)/NiO_x/interfacial layer (YLC)/perovskite/PC₆₁BM/BCP/Ag. The presence of the spiro-based compounds YLC-1 and YLC-2 efficiently passivated the interfacial and grain boundary defects of the perovskite and enhanced the sizes of its grains, more so than did YLC-3 and YLC-4. These spiro-based YLC derivatives packed densely and functioned as Lewis bases to coordinate Pb and Ni ions in the perovskite and NiO_x layers, respectively. Together, the effects of smaller grain boundaries and defect passivation of the perovskite enhanced the optoelectronic properties of the PSCs. The photoinduced charge carrier extraction in the linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) curves of NiO_x/YLC-1(a) showed the faster carrier transport 3.3 × 10^-3 cm² V^-1 s^-1, which improved the carrier mobility, supporting the notion of defect passivation of the perovskite. The best-performing NiO_x/YLC-1(a) device provided a short-circuit current density (J_SC) of 22.88 mA cm^-2, an open-circuit voltage (V_OC) of 1.10 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 80.93%, corresponding to an overall PCE of 20.37%. In addition, the PCEs of the NiO_x/YLC-1(a) and NiO_x/YLC-4(b) PSC devices underwent decays of only 98.1 and 97.0% of their original values after 41 days under an Ar atmosphere. Thus, these YLC derivatives passivated the NiO_x surface and optimized the film quality of perovskites, thereby leading to superior PCEs of their respective PSCs.

Metal-catalyzed reactions for the C(sp2)–N bond formation: achievements of recent years

The review deals with the main catalytic methods for the C(sp2)–N bond formation, including Buchwald–Hartwig palladium-catalyzed amination of aryl and heteroaryl halides, renaissance of the Ullmann chemistry, i.e., the application of catalysis by copper complexes to form the carbon–nitrogen bond, and Chan–Lam reactions of (hetero)arylboronic acids with amines. Also, oxidative amination with C–H activation, which has been booming during the last decade, is addressed. Particular attention is paid to achievements in the application of heterogenized catalysts.

Fluorine Labeling of ortho-Phenylenes to Facilitate Conformational Analysis

¹H NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the conformational analysis of ortho-phenylene foldamers in solution. However, as o-phenylenes are integrated into ever more complex systems, we are reaching the limits of what can be analyzed by ¹H- and ¹³C-based NMR techniques. Here, we explore fluorine labeling of o-phenylene oligomers for analysis by ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy. Two series of fluorinated oligomers have been synthesized. Optimization of monomers for Suzuki coupling enables an efficient stepwise oligomer synthesis. The oligomers all adopt well-folded geometries in solution, as determined by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. ¹⁹F NMR experiments complement these methods well. The resolved singlets of one-dimensional ¹⁹F{¹H} spectra are very useful for determining relative conformer populations. The additional information from two-dimensional ¹⁹F NMR spectra is also clearly valuable when making ¹H assignments. The comparison of ¹⁹F isotropic shielding predictions to experimental chemical shifts is not, however, currently sufficient by itself to establish o-phenylene geometries.

Photoassisted Charge Transfer Between DMF and Substrate: Facile and Selective N,N-Dimethylamination of Fluoroarenes

A reversible Van der Waals complex formation between the electron-deficient fluorinated aromatic ring and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) molecules followed by light irradiation resulted in charge transfer (CT) process. The complex was stabilized by ammonium formate and further decomposed to form the C-N bond. Control experiments revealed that the simultaneous S_N Ar pathway also contributes to product formation. This methodology is mild, metal-free, and effective for the amination of a variety of substrates. The reproducibility of this methodology was also verified on gram-scale reactions. The CT states were supported by control UV/Vis spectroscopy and computational studies.
