Synthesis of Functionalized 1,3,2-Benzodiazaborole Cores Using Bench-Stable Components

Synthesis, Structures, and Photophysical Properties of Zigzag BNBNB-Embedded Anthracene-Fused Fluoranthene

Three zigzag BNBNB-embedded anthracene-fused fluoranthenes are synthesized from 1,3,2-benzodiazaboroles through an indole-type N-directed C-H borylation reaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses confirm the double bond character of all four alternating B-N bonds and reveal the five-center four-π-electron nature of the BNBNB group. Experimental spectra and density functional theory calculations indicate that borylation remarkably enhances the planarity, extends π-conjugation, and leads to a bathochromic shift in the absorption and emission bands, with remarkable fluorescence quantum yields in solution (92%).

Synthesis of BN-Polyarenes by a Mild Borylative Cyclization Cascade

Reaction of BCl₃ with suitably substituted o-alkynylanilines promotes a cascade reaction in which BN-polycyclic compounds are obtained via the formation of two new cycles and three new bonds in a single operational step. The reaction is highly efficient and takes place at room temperature, providing a very mild and straightforward strategy for the preparation of BN-aromatic compounds, which can be further transformed into a variety of BN-PAHs with different polycyclic cores and substituents.

Unpredicted Concentration-Dependent Sensory Properties of Pyrene-Containing NBN-Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Pyrene molecules containing NBN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized by a simple and efficient intermolecular dehydration reaction between 1-pyrenylboronic acid and aromatic diamine. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) with a five-membered NBN ring and pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) with a six-membered NBN ring show differing luminescence. Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) shows concentration-dependent luminescence and enhanced emission after grinding at solid state. Pyrene-B (1,8-diaminonaphthalene) exhibits a turn-on type luminescence upon fluoride ion addition at lower concentration, as well as concentration-dependent stability. Further potential applications of Pyrene-B (o-phenylenediamine) on artificial light-harvesting film were demonstrated by using commercial NiR dye as acceptor.

Construction of 1,2,3-Benzodiazaborole by Electrophilic Borylation of Azobenzene and Nucleophilic Dialkylative Cyclization

1,2,3-Benzodiazaboroles can be conveniently prepared from azobenzenes by a two-step protocol involving electrophilic ortho-borylation with BBr₃ and dialkylative cyclization with the Grignard reagent. The methodology provides a diverse range of products equipped with functionalities from azobenzenes containing substituents (Me, t-Bu, F, Cl, Br, I, and OCF₃) and a series of Grignard reagents (alkyl- and arylmagnesium reagents). Moreover, this study displays the moderate aromaticity of the B-N-N-containing five-membered ring and mechanistic investigations of the cyclization reaction.

Selectivity in the Elaboration of Bicyclic Borazarenes

Among aromatic compounds, borazarenes represent a significant class of isosteres in which carbon-carbon bonds have been replaced by B-N bonds. Described herein is a summary of the selective reactions that have been developed for known systems, as well as a summary of computationally-based predictions of selectivities that might be anticipated in reactions of yet unrealized substructures.

Diazaboryl-naphthyl-ketone: A New Scaffold with Bright Fluorescence, Aggregation-Induced Emission, and Application in the Quantitation of Trace Boronic Acids in Drug Intermediates

This study describes the synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a new luminescent polyaromatic boronic acid scaffold, diazaboryl-naphthyl-ketones (DNKs). These stable compounds display extremely bright fluorescence, aggregation-induced emission, positive solvatochromism, and solid-state fluorescence. DFT calculations and X-ray crystallographic study revealed notable electronic and structural differences between these compounds and the parent diaminonaphthalene (DAN) adducts. Acylation of the DAN system causes a localization of both HOMO and LUMO onto the DNK unit, which validates the negligible influence of the B-aryl substituent. The LUMO energy is lowered, and its shape significantly altered. Photophysical data in solution and the solid state revealed blue-shifted, narrowed, and intense emissions for DNKs (up to 89 % quantum yield). The potential utility of the fluorogenic DNK system was demonstrated with a proof-of-concept for the determination of trace boronic acid contaminants in solid samples, down to one-ppm level, using HPLC with fluorescence detection. This method could be useful in pharmaceutical development for the quantitation of difficult-to-detect and potentially mutagenic residual boronic acid from late cross-coupling reactions in drug syntheses.

BNB-Doped Phenalenyls: Modular Synthesis, Optoelectronic Properties, and One-Electron Reduction

A highly modular synthesis of BNB- and BOB-doped phenalenyls is presented. Treatment of the 1,8-naphthalenediyl-bridged boronic acid anhydride 1 with LiAlH₄/Me₃SiCl afforded the corresponding 1,8-naphthalenediyl-supported diborane(6) 2, which served as the starting material for all subsequent transformations. Upon addition of MesMgBr/Me₃SiCl, 2 was readily converted to the tetraorganyl diborane(6) 5. The further heteroatoms were finally introduced through the reaction of 2 with (Me₃Si)₂NR' or 5 with H₂NR' or H₂O (R' = H, Me, p-Tol). A helically twisted, fully BNB-embedded PAH 11 was prepared by combining 2 with a dibrominated m-terphenylamine, followed by a Grignard-mediated double ring-closure reaction. All compounds devoid of B-H bonds show favorable optoelectronic properties, such as luminescence and reversible reduction behavior. In the case of the BNB-phenalenyl 7 (BMes, NMe), the radical-anion salt K[7^•] was generated through chemical reduction with K metal and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. K[7^•] is not long-term stable in a THF/c-hexane solution, but abstracts an H atom with formation of the diamagnetic BNB-doped 1H-phenalene K[7H].

Azaborininones: Synthesis and Structural Analysis of a Carbonyl-Containing Class of Azaborines

An approach to access azaborininones (carbonyl-containing, boron-based heterocyclic scaffolds) using simple reagents and conditions from both organotrifluoroborates and boronic acids is described. An inexpensive, common reagent, SiO₂, was found to serve as both a fluorophile and desiccant to facilitate the annulation process across three different azaborininone platforms. Computational analysis of some of the cores synthesized in this study was undertaken to compare the azaborininones with the analogous carbon-based heterocyclic systems. Computationally derived pK_a values, NICS aromaticity calculations, and electrostatic potential surfaces revealed a unique isoelectronic/isostructural relationship between these azaborines and their carbon isosteres that changed based on boron connectivity. Correlation to experimentally derived data supports the computational findings.

Site-Selective and Stereoselective trans-Hydroboration of 1,3-Enynes Catalyzed by 1,4-Azaborine-Based Phosphine-Pd Complex

A concise synthesis of monobenzofused 1,4-azaborine phosphine ligands (Senphos) is described. These Senphos ligands uniquely support Pd-catalyzed trans-selective hydroboration of terminal and internal 1,3-enynes to furnish corresponding dienylboronates in high efficiency and diastereoselectivity. X-ray structural analysis of the Senphos-Pd(0) complex reveals a κ²-P-η²-BC coordination mode, and this isolated complex has been shown to serve as a competent catalyst for the trans-hydroboration reaction. This work demonstrates that the expanded chemical space provided by the BN/CC isosterism approach translates into the functional space in the context of stereoselective catalytic transformations.
