Abstract
N-heterocyclic carbene catalysis reaction protocol is disclosed for the synthesis of phthalidyl sulfonohydrazones. A broad range of N-tosyl hydrazones react effectively with phthalaldehyde derivatives under open-air conditions, enabling the formation of a new C-N bond via an oxidative path. The reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions with broad substrate scopes, wide functional group tolerance, and good to excellent yields. The mechanistic pathway is studied successfully using control experiments, competitive reactions, ESI-MS spectral analyses of the reaction mixture, and computational study by density functional theory. The potential use of one of the phthalidyl sulfonohydrazone derivatives as the inhibitor of β-ketoacyl acyl carrier protein synthase I of Escherichia coli is investigated using molecular docking.

Abstract
In recent years, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) have gained recognition as versatile molecules capable of acting as organocatalysts in various reactions, particularly through the activation of aldehydes via Breslow-type adducts. This organocatalytic activation has enabled the production of numerous 3,4-dihydropyran-2-ones and related derivatives. In this review, we provide an overview of the production of 3,4-dihydropyran-2-ones and derivatives via organocatalytic processes involving NHCs over the past eight years. These processes involve the use of a diverse range of substrates, catalysts, and reaction conditions, which can be classified into [4+2]-and [3+3]-type cycloadditions, primarily aimed at synthesizing this skeleton due to its biological activity and multiple stereocenters. These processes are scaled up to the gram scale, and the resulting products are often directed towards epimerization and functionalization to produce more complex molecules with potential applications in the biological field. Finally, we provide a perspective and the future directions of this topic in organic synthesis.

Abstract
In the last ten years, the combination of Lewis acid with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis has emerged as a powerful strategy in a variety of important asymmetric synthesis, due to the ready availability of starting materials, operational simplicity and mild reaction conditions. Recent findings illustrate that Lewis acid could largely enhance the efficiency and enantioselectivity, reverse the diastereoselectivity, and even influence the pathway of the same reaction partners. Herein, this review aims to reveal the recent advances in NHC-Lewis acid synergistically promoted enantioselective reactions for the expeditious assembly of versatile biologically important chiral pharmaceuticals and natural products.

Abstract
A novel strategy for the construction of 2,2-diacyl spirocyclohexanones 3 has been demonstrated on the basis of an NHC-catalyzed [3C + 3C] annulation of potassium 2-oxo-3-enoates with 2-ethylidene 1,3-indandiones. Furthermore, enantioenriched 3 was obtained in good to excellent yields with good enantioselectivities when chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) was employed. Notably, ring opening of the resulting 2,2-diacyl spirocyclohexanones 3 with hydrazine led to the formation of phthalazinones in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Herein, an efficient route to amides from aldimines via aza-Breslow intermediates through aerobic oxidative carbene catalysis with LiCl as a cooperative Lewis acid is described. Many of the obtained N-heteroarylamides feature biological activity. Ambient air was used as the sole oxidant and source of oxygen in this catalytically oxidative amidation. This method allows for a broad substrate scope and mild conditions. The aza-Breslow intermediate derivative was isolated and its crystal structure confirmed.

Abstract
In the context of green chemistry, the replacement of high molecular weight stoichiometric oxidants with O2 is most desirable but difficult. Here, we report the asymmetric aerobic oxidative synthesis of dihydropyranones. The oxidation is aided by a system of electron transfer mediators and is selective toward the homoenolate. The dihydropyranones can be isolated in high to excellent yields, with high ee (up to 95%).
