Abstract
The aryl O-carbamate (ArOAm) group is among the strongest of the directed metalation groups (DMGs) in directed ortho metalation (DoM) chemistry, especially in the form Ar-OCONEt2. Since the last comprehensive review of metalation chemistry involving ArOAms (published more than 30 years ago), the field has expanded significantly. For example, it now encompasses new substrates, solvent systems, and metalating agents, while conditions have been developed enabling metalation of ArOAm to be conducted in a green and sustainable manner. The ArOAm group has also proven to be effective in the anionic ortho-Fries (AoF) rearrangement, Directed remote metalation (DreM), iterative DoM sequences, and DoM-halogen dance (HalD) synthetic strategies and has been transformed into a diverse range of functionalities and coupled with various groups through a range of cross-coupling (CC) strategies. Of ultimate value, the ArOAm group has demonstrated utility in the synthesis of a diverse range of bioactive and polycyclic aromatic compounds for various applications.

Abstract
New nickel complexes with tridentate phenoxy-amidate-aNHC donor groups were synthesized from the reactions between nickel acetate and imidazolium ligand precursors in net pyridine. An unusual degradation pathway was observed, leading to imidazole derivatives occupying the fourth coordination sites in these square planar complexes. A new imidazole-coordinated nickel complex was found to be efficient in catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with aryl chlorides under 3 mol% of catalyst loading. The catalytic activities were superior to those of its reported normal NHC counterpart. Instead of the common procedure of using additional phosphine, the addition of IMes·HCl significantly enhances the product yields of the catalytic reaction.

Abstract
The pioneering nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling of C-O electrophiles was unlocked by Wenkert in the 1970s; however, the transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric activation of aromatic C-O bonds has never been reported. Herein the first enantioselective activation of an aromatic C-O bond is demonstrated via the catalytic arylative ring-opening cross-coupling of diarylfurans. This transformation is facilitated via nickel catalysis in the presence of chiral N-heterocyclic carbene ligands, and chiral 2-aryl-2'-hydroxy-1,1'-binaphthyl (ArOBIN) skeletons are delivered axially in high yields with high ee. Moreover, this versatile skeleton can be transformed into various synthetic useful intermediates, chiral catalysts, and ligands by using the CH- and OH-based modifiable sites. This chemistry features mild conditions and good atom economy.

Abstract
A simple Ni(cod)2 and carbene mediated strategy facilitates the efficient catalytic cross-coupling of methoxyarenes with a variety of organoboron reagents. Directing groups facilitate the activation of inert C-O bonds in under-utilized aryl methyl ethers enabling their adaptation for C-C cross-coupling reactions as less toxic surrogates to the ubiquitous haloarenes. The method reported enables C-C cross-coupling with readily available and economical arylboronic acid reagents, which is unprecedented, and compares well with other organoboron reagents with similarly high reactivity. Extension to directing group assisted chemo-selective C-O bond cleavage, and further application towards the synthesis of novel bifunctionalized biaryls is reported. Key to the success of this protocol is the use of directing groups proximal to the reaction center to facilitate the activation of the inert C-OMe bond.

Abstract
A highly efficient and air-, thermal-, and moisture-stable nickel-based catalyst with excellent magnetic properties supported on silica-coated magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles was successfully synthesized. It was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, vibration sample magnetometry, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, inductively coupled plasma analysis, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm analysis. The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction between aryl carbamates and/or sulfamates with arylboronic acids was selected to demonstrate the catalytic activity and efficiency of the as-prepared magnetic nanocatalyst. Using the mentioned heterogeneous nanocatalyst in such reactions generated corresponding products in good to excellent yields in which the catalyst could easily be recovered from the reaction mixture with an external magnetic field to reuse directly for the next several cycles without significant loss of its activity.

Abstract
The oxidative addition of phenolic electrophiles at Ni(0) in the presence of monodentate phosphine ligands was studied with both dispersion-free and dispersion-containing DFT methods. With the popular bulky ligand PCy3, consideration of dispersion has a striking effect on the predicted ligation state of nickel during oxidative addition of aryl sulfamates. Dispersioncontaining methods such as M06L indicate a clear preference for a bis-phosphine ligated transition state (TS), while dispersion free methods like B3LYP strongly favor a monophosphine ligated TS. This discrepancy in predicted ligation state is also found with small phosphines (PMe3) in combination with some aryl electrophiles (carbamates, acetates, pivalates, chlorides), but a bis-PMe3-ligated TS is predicted regardless of dispersion for other electrophiles (sulfamates, mesylates, tosylates). DFT calculations that include dispersion also offer a possible explanation for the observed poor efficacy of P t Bu3 as a ligand in Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions.

Abstract
A facile one-pot synthetic method of building aryloxyalkyl esters was developed using various types of phenolic esters with halogenated alcohols. The ready availability of both starting materials, coupled with the required simple experimental technique, enables the current synthetic method of producing aryloxyalkyl esters in a fast and efficient way. It is noteworthy that acyl transfer was demonstrated in this reaction.

Aromatic skeletons are generally regarded as being uncleavable because of their aromatic stabilization energy. Compared to exocyclic functionalizations of aromatic compounds, much less attention has been paid to substitutions of endocyclic atoms in aromatic cores through partial disassembly of the cyclic skeletons and subsequent ring reconstruction. In this Feature Article, we describe our endeavours to establish "aromatic metamorphosis", where general aromatic compounds such as dibenzothiophenes, dibenzofurans, and benzofurans are transformed into different ring systems using a multi-step strategy or ideally in one step.

Abstract
The first nickel-catalyzed domino Heck cyclization/Suzuki coupling reaction for the synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles bearing quaternary all-carbon centers is reported. A wide range of electrophiles, such as aryl iodides, bromides, triflates, and chlorides, are all compatible with the reaction conditions. Moreover, cheap aryl esters, which undergo catalytic C-O bond cleavage, could also be employed as electrophiles. The approach shows good yields and broad scope, complementing a more practical and sustainable alternative to the conventional palladium-based analogues.

Abstract
Nickel catalysts have shown unique ligand control of stereoselectivity in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of boronates with benzylic pivalates and derivatives involving C(sp3)-O cleavage. The SIMes ligand (1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene) produces the stereochemically inverted C-C coupling product, while the tricyclohexylphosphine (PCy3) ligand delivers the retained stereochemistry. We have explored the mechanism and origins of the ligand-controlled stereoselectivity with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The oxidative addition determines the stereoselectivity with two competing transition states, an SN2 back-side attack type transition state that inverts the benzylic stereogenic center and a concerted oxidative addition through a cyclic transition state, which provides stereoretention. The key difference between the two transition states is the substrate-nickel-ligand angle distortion; the ligand controls the selectivity by differentiating the ease of this angle distortion. For the PCy3 ligand, the nickel-ligand interaction involves mainly σ-donation, which does not require a significant energy penalty for the angle distortion. The facile angle distortion with PCy3 ligand allows the favorable cyclic oxidative addition transition state, leading to the stereoretention. For the SIMes ligand, the extra d-p back-donation from nickel to the coordinating carbene increases the rigidity of the nickel-ligand bond, and the corresponding angle distortion is more difficult. This makes the concerted cyclic oxidative addition unfavorable with SIMes ligand, and the back-side SN2-type oxidative addition delivers the stereoinversion.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the mechanism of Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions involving organo-lithium and -zinc reagents through ethereal C-O bond cleavage. Based on this work, together with our previous mechanistic study on etheric Kumada-Tamao reaction, we identify and characterize a novel catalytic cycle for cross-coupling mediated by Ni(0)-ate complex.
