Abstract
In the presence of copper sulfate, three- or four-component reactions of 2-methylindole, aromatic aldehydes and various cyclic dienophiles in refluxing toluene afforded diverse spirotetrahydrocarbazoles. This reaction is an important development of the Levy reaction by using 2-methylindole to replace ethyl indole-2-acetate and successfully provides facile access to important polysubstituted spiro[carbazole-3,3'-indolines], spiro[carbazole-2,3'-indolines], spiro[carbazole-3,5'-pyrimidines] and spiro[carbazole-3,1'-cycloalkanes] in satisfactory yields and with high diastereoselectivity.

Abstract
The p-TsOH-catalyzed Diels–Alder reaction of 3-(indol-3-yl)maleimides with chalcone in toluene at 60 °C afforded two diastereoisomers of tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazoles, which can be dehydrogenated by DDQ oxidation in acetonitrile at room temperature to give the aromatized pyrrolo[3,4-c]carbazoles in high yields. On the other hand, the one-pot reaction of 3-(indol-3-yl)-1,3-diphenylpropan-1-ones with chalcones or benzylideneacetone in acetonitrile in the presence of p-TsOH and DDQ resulted in polyfunctionalized carbazoles in satisfactory yields. The reaction mechanism included the DDQ oxidative dehydrogenation of 3-(indol-3-yl)-1,3-diphenylpropan-1-ones to the corresponding 3-vinylindoles, their acid-catalyzed Diels–Alder reaction and sequential aromatization process.

Abstract
p-TsOH catalyzed Diels-Alder reaction of 2-(1-alkylindol-3-yl)naphthalene-1,4-diones and 3-phenacylideneoxindoles showed fascinating diastereoselectivity. The reaction with the hydrated p-TsOH afforded trans-isomers of dihydrospiro[indoline-3,6'-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazoles] as major products. Alternatively, the reaction with anhydrous p-TsOH under a Dean and Stark apparatus predominately gave cis-isomer of dihydrospiro[indoline-3,6'-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazoles]. On the other hand, the similar p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of 2-(indol-3-yl)naphthalene-1,4-diones with 3-arylideneindolin-2-ones afforded cis/trans-isomers of dihydrospiro[indoline-3,6'-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazoles]. Additionally, the p-TsOH catalyzed reaction of 2-(indol-3-yl)naphthalene-1,4-diones with 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones gave the expected spiro[indene-2,6'-naphtho[2,3-c]carbazoles] in satisfactory yields.

Abstract
In the presence of copper sulfate, the three-component reaction of aromatic aldehydes, ethylindole-3-acetate and 4-arylidene-5-methyl-2-phenylpyrazol-3-ones, in refluxing toluene afforded spiro[carbazole-3,4'-pyrazoles] in good yields with high diastereoselectivity. More importantly, the similar CuSO4 promoted the four-component reaction of two molecular aromatic aldehydes with ethylindole-3-acetate and 5-methyl-2-phenyl-pyrazol-3-one resulted in 2,4-diarylspiro[carbazole-3,4'-pyrazoles] in satisfactory yields. Additionally, CuSO4 promoted the four-component reaction of two molecular aromatic aldehydes, ethylindole-3-acetate and 2-phenylthiazol-4-one, in refluxing toluene gave 2,4-diarylspiro[carbazole-3,4'-thiazoles] with diastereomeric ratios in the range of 3:1 to 20:1.

Abstract
Arylative annulation of 2-carbonyl-3-propargyl indoles with boronic acids under sequential palladium/triflic acid catalysis is described. The present strategy to provide di- and triaryl carbazoles in one pot involves benzannulation through difunctionalization of alkynes. The strategy showed a good substrate scope with respect to boronic acids as well as 2-carbonyl-3-propargyl indoles to afford the corresponding carbazoles in decent yields.

Abstract
An iodine-catalyzed aerobic dehydro-aromatization has been developed, providing straightforward and efficient access to various benzoazoles and benzoazines. The present transition-metal-free protocol enables the dehydro-aromatization of tetrahydrobenzazoles and tetrahydroquinolines with molecular oxygen as the green oxidant, along with some other N-heterocycles. Hence, a broad range of heteroaromatic compounds are generated in moderate to good yields under facile reaction conditions. An iodine-catalyzed aerobic dehydro-aromatization has been developed, providing a straightforward and efficient access to various benzoazoles and benzoazines.![]()

Abstract
A general strategy for the preparative benzannulation of aromatic heterocycles via photocyclization of 1,2-dihetarylethenes was proposed for the first time. The strategy includes two steps, namely, modular assembly of dihetarylethenes from widely available 3-hetarylacetic acids and 2-bromo-1-hetarylethanones, and subsequent preparative photorearrangement (using a UV lamp at 365 nm as the light source). This approach is efficient for the annulation of a wide range of heterocycles and provides C-, N-, O- or S-substituents in the benzoheterocycles obtained. The photochemical step is a metal-, acid-, and oxidant-free reaction, which requires non-inert conditions, and can be easily monitored by NMR spectroscopy. Applicability of the proposed strategy was tested in the synthesis of a wide range of substituted carbazoles and benzo[b]thiophenes as well as on a gram-scale benzannulation of 3-indoleacetic acid. Our study disclosed how to overcome two notable obstacles to the successful photorearrangement of dihetarylethenes: undesired reactions associated with photogenerated singlet oxygen, and the instability of desired products. The first problem was successfully solved by the addition of DABCO, while development of an in situ alkylation protocol to trap unstable photoproducts allowed us to overcome the second issue.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalyzed annulation of 3-(1H-indol-3-yl)-3-oxopropanenitriles with sulfoxonium ylides or diazo compounds has been developed, leading to a series of polysubstituted carbazoles in moderate to good yields. This procedure proceeded with formal Rh(iii)-catalyzed (4 + 2) cycloaddition, with the functionalization of 2-C-H bonds of indole in a step-economical procedure. Additionally, this reaction could also be conducted under acidic conditions when diazo compounds were employed as the reaction partners, which was a complement to the annulation of sulfoxonium ylides under weak basic conditions.

Abstract
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute the largest family of transmembrane receptors in eukaryotes. The adenosine A1 receptor (A1AR) is a class A GPCR that is of interest as a therapeutic target particularly in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and neuropathic pain. Increased knowledge of the role A1AR plays in mediating these pathophysiological processes will help realise the therapeutic potential of this receptor. There is a lack of enabling tools such as selective fluorescent probes to study A1AR, therefore we designed a series of (benzimidazolyl)isoquinolinols conjugated to a fluorescent dye (31–35, 42–43). An improved procedure for the synthesis of isoquinolinols from tetrahydroisoquinolinols via oxidation with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) and atmospheric oxygen is reported. This synthetic method offers advantages over previous metal-based methods for the preparation of isoquinolinols and isoquinolines, which are important scaffolds found in many biologically active compounds and natural products. We report the first synthesis of the (benzimidazolyl)isoquinolinol compound class, however the fluorescent conjugates were not successful as A1AR fluorescent ligands. Mild, metal free aromatization of tetrahydroisoquinolinols. Synthesis of (benzimidazolyl)isoquinolinols.![]()
