Abstract
An unusual spiroannulation/cycloisomerization cascade of 3-(2-ethynylaryl)-N-tosylaziridines with indoles enabled by cooperative gold/scandium catalysis is presented, which facilitates the synthesis of 5H-benzo[b]carbazoles in moderate to excellent yields. This protocol features a broad substrate scope and good functional-group compatibility. Additionally, the resulting 5H-benzo[b]carbazoles exhibit good fluorescence properties, demonstrating the synthetic practicality of this method. Moreover, control experiments were performed to illustrate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
We describe a diversity-oriented one-pot telescopic synthesis of various benzo[b]carbazoles with the naphthannulation of indoles as the key step, enabled by an intramolecular furan-olefin Diels-Alder reaction. This strategy is general and efficient across a wide range of substrates. We applied this method to synthesize and characterize the first benzo[b]carbazole-based liquid crystalline materials, where the unique molecular design led to the formation of a rare nematic phase at room temperature.

Abstract
A protecting group-dependent diastereoselective synthesis of cyclohepta[b]indole over carbazole derivatives is developed. This strategy involves a regioselective 6-exo-trig radical cyclization-cyclopropanation-ring expansion cascade of 3-propargyl-2-alkenyl indole. The cascade radical cyclization was also performed on indole derivatives possessing alkyne, acrylate and vinylogous carbamate moieties, which delivered pyridocarbazole giving credence to the mechanistic hypothesis. Furthermore, cyclohepta[b]indole could be selectively converted to sulfone and sulfoxide as well as benzoazulenoindole via intramolecular Friedel-Crafts acylation.

Abstract
AbstractThe synthesis of monosubstituted tetrahydrocarbazoles is achieved via the palladium-catalyzed formal [4+2] cycloaddition of 2-alkyl-3-indolylmethyl carbonates and monosubstituted olefins. The transformation demonstrates an unusual C(sp3)–H activation enabled by (η3-indolylmethyl)palladium complexes. The regioselectivity is found to be dependent on the nature of the substituent across the olefin component. Elaborate mechanistic studies are performed, and the synthetic utility of the products is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Regiodivergent formal [5+2]- and [4+2]-annulation reactions of indole derivatives with 2-(2-alkynyl)aryl cyclopropane-1,1-diesters (ACPs) have been developed. A series of tetracyclic indole derivatives were delivered in a 77% average yield with excellent regioselectivities enabled by Au(I)/Sc(III) bimetallic relay catalysis. A gram-scale reaction and further transformation of the resulting tetracyclic indoles demonstrated the practical utility of this protocol. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the obtained multicyclic compounds were also investigated.

Abstract
A Cu(I)-mediated cascade cyclization/annulation of unprotected o-alkynylanilines with maleimides in one pot is developed. The protocol offers sequential formation of one C-N and two C-C bonds to deliver fused benzo[a]carbazoles having free NH skeletons. The annulated products display fluorescence emission in the range of 485-502 nm with a large Stokes shift and fluorescence lifetime of ∼17 ns. The annulated 3aa displays AEE behavior in the ethanol/hexane system and possesses marigold-flower-like morphology at the aggregated state. Cell viability assays enumerate biocompatible AEEgens, while their high intracellular fluorescence depicts cell imaging applicability.

Abstract
The development of new synthetic protocols to access diverse molecular scaffolds from readily available starting compounds is of significance in both academia and industry. Towards this, the catalysis by transition metals has been employed as a powerful tool to access molecules with broad structural and functional diversity. An overview of the recent literature manifested the tremendous potential of transition metal-catalyzed processes in advancing organic synthesis in a new direction. This account compiles new conceptual advancements in the palladium-catalyzed Alder-ene type cycloisomerization reactions, C-H functionalizations, and one-pot multicatalytic processes, which have become essential tools to access new classes of molecules.

Abstract
We report on the implementation of the concept of a photochemically elicited two-carbon homologation of a π-donor-π-acceptor substituted chromophore by triple-bond insertion. Implementing a phenyl connector between the slide-in module and the chromophore enabled the synthesis of cylohepta[b]indole-type building blocks by a metal-free annulative one-pot two-carbon ring expansion of the five-membered chromophore. Post-irradiative structural elaboration provided founding members of the indolo[2,3-d]tropone family of compounds. Control experiments in combination with computational chemistry on this multibond reorganization process founded the basis for a mechanistic hypothesis.

Abstract
Embedded medium-sized carbacycles and cyclohepta[b]indoles occur frequently as scaffold elements in natural products and bioactive compounds. Described herein is a conceptionally novel photochemically triggered cascade process to these scaffolds. Abstract
A new approach for the synthesis of highly functionalized tetrahydrocyclohepta[ b]indoles through [5 + 2] cycloaddition was developed. Two carbon-carbon bonds were formed by the simple addition of an indium catalyst, which acted as both a π-Lewis acid and σ-Lewis acid to activate the alkyne and unsaturated ester, respectively. The reaction could be applied to various substrates and proceeded regio- and diastereoselectively in all cases.
