Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(III) compounds have found wide application in modern organic chemistry as environmentally friendly reagents and catalysts. Hypervalent iodine reagents are commonly used in synthetically important halogenations, oxidations, aminations, heterocyclizations, and various oxidative functionalizations of organic substrates. Iodonium salts are important arylating reagents, while iodonium ylides and imides are excellent carbene and nitrene precursors. Various derivatives of benziodoxoles, such as azidobenziodoxoles, trifluoromethylbenziodoxoles, alkynylbenziodoxoles, and alkenylbenziodoxoles have found wide application as group transfer reagents in the presence of transition metal catalysts, under metal-free conditions, or using photocatalysts under photoirradiation conditions. Development of hypervalent iodine catalytic systems and discovery of highly enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important recent achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. Chemical transformations promoted by hypervalent iodine in many cases are unique and cannot be performed by using any other common, non-iodine-based reagent. This review covers literature published mainly in the last 7-8 years, between 2016 and 2024.

Abstract
A main-group catalysis-based strategy to access 8-membered carbocycles via the direct carbofunctionalization of 2-phenethyl-substituted 1,3-dienes is disclosed. Through the intervention of an I(I)/I(III) catalysis cycle, the synthesis of densely functionalized, fluorinated benzocyclooctenes can be achieved in an operationally simple manner. Modulating the oxidation/activation regime, and the external nucleophile, the process has been extended to unify the challenging cyclization with formation of allylic C-O, C-N, and C-C bonds (>30 examples). Derivatization of the product benzocyclooctenes is demonstrated together with X-ray conformational analysis, preliminary validation of enantioselective catalysis and a scalable resolution protocol.

Abstract
We describe a facile-operational, high-yield method for the diastereocontrolled preparation of novel sulfonyl benzofused fluorooxabicyclo[4.2.1]nonanes by a straightforward synthetic route, including (i) NaBH4-mediated reduction of sulfonyl 3-methylene-oxabenzocyclooctan-6-ones and (ii) BF3·OEt2-mediated intramolecular nucleophilic fluorocyclization. The plausible mechanism for the preparation is proposed and discussed. This protocol can easily install a fluoro-atom on the bridged head position in a short time and under mild conditions, resulting in one carbon-carbon and one carbon-fluorine bond formation.

Abstract
The regio- and enantio-selective, intermolecular vicinal fluoroamination of α-trifluoromethyl styrenes has been achieved by enantioselective II /IIII catalysis. Leveraging C2 -symmetric resorcinol-based aryl iodide catalysts, it has been possible to intercept the transient iodonium intermediate using simple nitriles, which function as both the solvent and nucleophile. In situ Ritter reaction provides direct access to the corresponding amides (up to 89 % yield, e.r. 93 : 7). This main group catalysis paradigm inverts the intrinsic regioselectivity of the uncatalyzed process, thereby providing facile access to tertiary, benzylic stereocenters bearing both CF3 and F groups. Privileged phenethylamine pharmacophores can be generated in which there is complete local partial charge inversion (CF3δ- /Fδ- versus CH3δ+ /Hδ+ ). Crystallographic analyses of representative β-fluoroamide products reveal highly pre-organized conformations that manifest the stereoelectronic gauche effect.

Abstract
To understand the unprecedented difference between 6-endo and 5-exo selectivity in hypervalent iodine (III) promoted fluorocyclization of unsaturated carboxylic acids or alcohols by difluoroiodotoluene, density functional theory (DFT) studies have been performed to systematically compare both the previous proposed “fluorination first and cyclization later” mechanism and the alternative “cyclization first and fluorination later” mechanism. Our results revealed that the selectivity is mechanism-dependent. The unsaturated alcohol prefers the fluorination first and the 6-endo-tet cyclization later pathway, leading to the experimentally observed 6-endo ether product. In contrast, the unsaturated carboxylic acid plausibly undergoes the 5-exo-trig cyclization first and the fluorination later to the experimentally observed 5-exo lactone product. The pKa property of the functional group of the substrate is found to play a key role in determining the reaction mechanism. The provided insights into the mechanism-dependent selectivity should help advance the development of fluorocyclization reactions with hypervalent iodine reagents.

Abstract
Abstract
The application of hypervalent iodine species generated in situ in organic transformations has emerged as a useful and powerful tool in organic synthesis, allowing for the construction of a series of bond formats via oxidative coupling. Among these transformations, the catalytic aryl iodide can be oxidized to hypervalent iodine species, which then undergoes oxidative reaction with the substrates and the aryl iodine regenerated again once the first cyclic cycle of the reaction is completed. This review aims to systematically summarize and discuss the main progress in the application of in situ-generated hypervalent iodine species, providing references and highlights for synthetic chemists who might be interested in this field of hypervalent iodine chemistry.

Abstract
An efficient route for the synthesis of multifunctionalized pyrrolidines based on copper-catalyzed diastereoselective [3 + 2]-cycloaddition of nitroalkenes with azomethine ylides was developed. Novel fluorinated heterocycles - β-fluoro-β-nitropyrrolidines - were accessed via this method. The products can be prepared in good to excellent yields and with high diastereoselectivity. Subsequent transformations of pyrrolidines including oxidative aromatization into fluorinated pyrrolines and medicinally attractive β-fluoro-NH-pyrroles as well as chemoselective reduction reactions were demonstrated. Application of the developed procedures for the non-fluorinated analogues was demonstrated to lead to various β-substituted pyrrole derivatives.

Abstract
A one-step protocol of the aryl iodine-catalyzed aminolactonization of unactivated alkenes under oxidation conditions was first reported to efficiently construct diverse amino lactones in a short time using HNTs2 as the compatible nitrogen source. In addition, we investigated the influence of the reaction rate based on the structure of the iodoarene precatalyst, which revealed the selective adjustment effect on aminolactonization and oxylactonization. Finally, preliminary experiments verified the feasibility of asymmetric aminolactonization catalyzed by a chiral iodoarene precatalyst.

Abstract
Reported here is the room-temperature metal-free iodoarene-catalyzed oxyamination of unactivated alkenes. In this process, the alkenes are difunctionalized by the oxygen atom of the amide group and the nitrogen in an exogenous HNTs2 molecule. This mild and open-air reaction provided an efficient synthesis to N-bistosyl-substituted 5-imino-2-tetrahydrofuranyl methanamine derivatives, which are important motifs in drug development and biological studies. Mechanistic study based on experiments and density functional theory calculations showed that this transformation proceeds via activation of the substrate alkene by an in situ generated cationic iodonium(III) intermediate, which is subsequently attacked by an oxygen atom (instead of nitrogen) of amides to form a five-membered ring intermediate. Finally, this intermediate undergoes an SN2 reaction by NTs2 as the nucleophile to give the oxygen and nitrogen difunctionalized 5-imino-2-tetrahydrofuranyl methanamine product. An asymmetric variant of the present alkene oxyamination using chiral iodoarenes as catalysts also gave promising results for some of the substrates.

Abstract
A method for the synthesis of iodomethyl-substituted five-membered sultams has been developed. The sultams were synthesized by intramolecular iodoamination of alkenyl sulfamides. The method allows synthesis of N- and C-substituted sultams. NH-Sultams were prepared by acidic cleavage of the corresponding tert-butyl sultams that are readily available. Varying the length of alkenyl substituent at sulfamide it was shown that only five- and six-membered sultams could be prepared by this method. Neither four- nor seven-membered sultams were detected. The simple practical procedure and available starting materials make the variously substituted sultams readily available.

Abstract
The chromane nucleus is common to a plenum of bioactive small molecules where it is frequently oxidized at position 3. Motivated by the importance of this position in conferring efficacy, and the prominence of bioisosterism in drug discovery, an iodine(I)/iodine(III) catalysis strategy to access enantioenriched 3-fluorochromanes is disclosed (up to 7:93 e.r.). In situ generation of ArIF2 enables the direct fluorocyclization of allyl phenyl ethers to generate novel scaffolds that manifest the stereoelectronic gauche effect. Mechanistic interrogation using deuterated probes confirms a stereospecific process consistent with a type IIinv pathway.

Abstract
The general protocol for the synthesis of isoxazolidine-fused isoquinolin-1(2H)-ones was established with the help of bench stable hypervalent iodine reagent PIDA. Polycyclic six-, seven- and eight-membered N-heterocycles can be rapidly synthesized from available amides under metal-free conditions within 1 min at room temperature through C-H/N-H functionalization. Moreover, the protocol has the merits of broad substrate scope, atom economy and operational simplicity.

Abstract
Stereoselectivity in the asymmetric diamination of styrene catalyzed by chiral hypercoordinate iodine originates from the prochiral face recognition when the substrate binds to the catalyst.
Hypercoordinate iodine has evolved as an impressive class of catalysts for various organic transformations. Extension of this idea to asymmetric applications, such as in the asymmetric difunctionalization of styrene or its derivatives, constitutes an important reaction. In this study, the mechanism and origin of stereoinduction in styrene diamination, with a sulfonimide (HNMs2) as the diaminating agent and iodoresorcinol (((iPr)2N(CO)-CH(Me)-O)2Ar–I) based chiral hypercoordinate iodine as the catalyst, are investigated using density functional theory calculations. The energetically preferred catalytic pathway has been found to involve, among other steps, two very important mechanistic events: (a) the formation of a catalyst–substrate complex by the action of styrene on the catalyst ArI(NMs2)2, resulting in the displacement of one of the imidates (NMs2–); and (b) a rebound of the departed imidate on the iodine-bound styrene to form an iodonium ion intermediate with a N–C bond. Explicit interaction of the imidate ion with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP), used as a solvent additive, lowers the barrier for the formation of the iodonium ion. The P helical fold of the chiral arms of the iodoresorcinol catalyst is found to offer a chiral environment for the reactants. Coordination of the iodine catalyst to the styrene double bond is found to make the benzylic carbon more electrophilic and hence makes it the preferred site for the nucleophilic addition. In the chiral environment of the catalyst, an enhanced polarization of the styrene double bond is noticed when the double bond coordinates through the si prochiral face than the re face. Nucleophilic addition on the re face of the catalyst–substrate complex is associated with a lower activation barrier leading to the experimentally observed S enantiomeric product. The stereoselective model developed in this study can be employed to related asymmetric styrene difunctionalizations using similar hypercoordinate iodine catalysts.

Abstract
Hypervalent iodine(III) reagents have been well-developed and widely utilized in functionalization of alkenes, however, generally either stoichiometric amounts of iodine(III) reagents are required or stoichiometric oxidants such as mCPBA are employed to in situ generate iodine(III) species. In this review, recent developments of hypervalent iodine(III)-catalyzed functionalization of alkenes and asymmetric reactions using a chiral iodoarene are summarized.

Abstract
A simple, user-friendly, metal-free protocol for the regioselective anti-Markovnikov hydrofluorination of olefins using readily available and inexpensive reagents has been developed. This new approach displays a broader scope than previously reported methodologies and has been applied to the late-stage fluorination of a complex molecule, giving rise to a fluorosteroid derivative. The stereochemistry of the process has also been studied in some detail.
