Synthesis and Transistor Application of Bis[1]benzothieno[6,7-d:6′,7′-d′]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophenes

Regioselective Synthesis of 5-Propyl-2-((trityloxy)methyl)thiophene-3-carbaldehyde

5-propyl-2-((trityloxy)methyl)thiophene-3-carbaldehyde was synthesized by using the concept of chemo- and regioselective Br/Li exchange reaction from 3-bromo-5-propyl-2-((trityloxy)methyl)thiophene. This is a five-step protocol starting from thiophene with an overall yield of 33%. These lithium/halogen exchange reactions were carried out at −78 °C to rt over the period of 1 to 18 h depending on the reactivity of electrophiles.

Dodecacyclic-Fused Electron Acceptors with Multiple Electron-Deficient Units for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Fused aromatic cores in non-fullerene electron acceptors (NFEAs) play a significant role in determining their optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance. In this work, a dodecacyclic-fused core with three electron-deficient units is synthesized through a double intramolecular Cadogan reduction cyclization. Terminal groups with different halogen substitution (F or Cl) are grafted onto the dodecacyclic-fused core to afford MS-4F and MS-4Cl, both of which showed strong and broad absorption, narrow bandgaps around 1.40 eV, and variable molecular packing model in pristine and blend films. Photovoltaic performance of solar cells containing MS-4F and MS-4Cl as NFEAs were investigated with resultant power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 11.75 % and 11.79 %, respectively. The mechanism study indicates that both of PBDB-T : MS-4F- and PBDB-T : MS-4Cl-based devices displayed high hole and electron mobility values, efficient charge transfer, and low charge recombination etc. These results indicate that designing multiple-fused aromatic cores with multiple electron-deficient units is a promising strategy to obtain high-performance NFEAs.

Effective Synthesis of Ladder-type Oligo(p-aniline)s and Poly(p-aniline)s via Intramolecular SNAr Reaction

Symmetric ladder-type oligo(p-aniline)s and poly(p-aniline)s were successfully synthesized by an intramolecular ring closure in a highly efficient S_NAr reaction from oligo(p-phenylene)s and poly(p-phenylene)s with fluorine (F) and secondary amine (NH) groups. Unlike Cadogan ring closure, the newly designed cyclization reaction will not produce a mixture of symmetric and nonsymmetric structures. Moreover, the introduction of the F atom does not hinder Suzuki polymerization. The result indicates that preparing regular oligomers and polymers with a nitrogen bridge is possible.

Synthesis and Physicochemical Properties of 2,7-Disubstituted Phenanthro[2,1-b:7,8-b']dithiophenes

We report the design, synthesis, and physicochemical properties of an array of phenanthro[2,1-b:7,8-b']dithiophene (PDT-2) derivatives by introducing five types of alkyl (C_nH_2n+1; n = 8, 10, 12, 13, and 14) or two types of decylthienyl groups at 2,7-positions of the PDT-2 core. Systematic investigation revealed that the alkyl length and the type of side chains have a great effect on the physicochemical properties. For alkylated PDT-2, the solubility was gradually decreased as the chain length was increased. For instance, C₈-PDT-2 exhibited the highest solubility (5.0 g/L) in chloroform. Additionally, substitution with 5-decylthienyl groups showed poor solubility in both chloroform and toluene, whereas PDT-2 with 4-decylthienyl groups resulted in higher solubility. Furthermore, UV-vis absorption of PDT-2 derivatives substituted by decylthienyl groups showed a redshift, indicating the extension of their π-conjugation length. This work reveals that modification of the conjugated core by alkyl or decylthienyl side chains may be an efficient strategy by which to change the physicochemical properties, which might lead to the development of high-performance organic semiconductors.

Synthesis of Dinaphtho[2,3-d:2',3'-d']anthra[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (DNADT) Derivatives: Effect of Alkyl Chains on Transistor Properties

To investigate organic field-effect transistor (OFET) properties, a new thienoacene-type molecule, 4,14-dihexyldinaphtho[2,3-d:2’,3’-d’]anthra[1,2-b:5,6-b’]dithiophene (C6-DNADT), consisting of π-conjugated nine aromatic rings and two hexyl chains along the longitudinal molecular axis has been successfully synthesized by sequential reactions, including Negishi coupling, epoxidation, and cycloaromatization. The fabricated OFET using thin films of C6-DNADT exhibited p-channel FET properties with field-effect mobilities (µ) of up to 2.6 × 10⁻² cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹, which is ca. three times lower than that of the parent DNADT molecule (8.5 × 10⁻² cm² V⁻¹ s⁻¹). Although this result implies that the installation of relatively short alkyl chains into the DNADT core is not suitable for transistor application, the origins for the FET performance obtained in this work is fully discussed, based on theoretical calculations and solid-state structure of C6-DNADT by grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses. The results obtained in this study disclose the effect of alkyl chains introduced onto the molecule on transistor characteristics.

Synthesis and Physicochemical Properties of Dibenzo[2,3- d:2',3'- d']anthra[1,2- b:5,6- b']dithiophene (DBADT) and Its Derivatives: Effect of Substituents on Their Molecular Orientation and Transistor Properties

We have synthesized dibenzo[2,3- d:2',3'- d']anthra[1,2- b:5,6- b']dithiophene (DBADT) and several derivatives bearing alkyl and phenyl groups at various positions. The optical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated. All the fabricated OFET devices exhibited typical p-type behavior under ambient conditions, and diphenyl-substituted analogue-based OFET devices showed excellent mobility, as high as 0.66 cm² V^-1 s^-1. The surface morphology and molecular orientation in thin films were also investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and two-dimensional grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXD). It was found that the substituents and their positions affect the molecular orbitals, molecular orientation, and morphology of the thin films, producing different FET performance.

π-Extended hexadeca-substituted cobalt phthalocyanine as an active layer for organic field-effect transistors

The structural modification of the phthalocyanine skeleton with a hexadeca substitution pattern is a promising approach for the fabrication of active layers for OFETs.
