C-N Bond Formation from Allylic Alcohols via Cooperative Nickel and Titanium Catalysis

H2 and carbon-heteroatom bond activation mediated by polarized heterobimetallic complexes

The field of heterobimetallic chemistry has rapidly expanded over the last decade. In addition to their interesting structural features, heterobimetallic structures have been found to facilitate a range of stoichiometric bond activations and catalytic processes. The accompanying review summarizes advances in this area since January of 2010. The review encompasses well-characterized heterobimetallic complexes, with a particular focus on mechanistic details surrounding their reactivity applications.

Boron-Templated Dimerization of Allylic Alcohols To Form Protected 1,3-Diols via Acid Catalysis

We report an unprecedented boron-templated dimerization of allylic alcohols that generates a 1,3-diol product with two stereogenic centers in high yield and diastereoselectivity. This acid-catalyzed reaction is achieved via in situ formation of a boronic ester intermediate that facilitates selective cyclization and formation of a cyclic boronic ester product. High yields are observed with a variety of allylic alcohols, and mechanistic studies confirm the role of boron as a template for the reaction.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Allylation of Amides with Styrenes Using DMSO as Both the Solvent and the α-Methylene Source

An efficient synthesis of privileged allylic amines has been developed via cobalt-catalyzed allylation of amides with styrenes, in which DMSO was used as both the solvent and the α-methylene source. This transformation features high yields, and selectivity for the (E)-isomer of the linear product. Through the experimental and computational investigations, a sequential K₂S₂O₈-mediated oxidative coupling/cobalt-assisted regioselective alkene insertion/β-H elimination/alkene dissociation/hydride transfer process has also been deduced.
