Self-Assembled Carcerand-like Cage with a Thermoregulated Selective Binding Preference for Purification of High-Purity C60 and C70

A π-extended molecular belt with selective binding capability for fullerene C70

A molecular belt incorporating naphthalene moieties, featuring an ellipsoidal cavity, was precisely engineered through bottom-up synthesis. Its pre-arranged geometry exhibits excellent complementarity to fullerene C70, resulting in remarkable selective binding ability (K = 1.3 × 106 M-1) for C70 compared to C60 (K = 176 M-1), forming a 1 : 1 complex. This superiority was unequivocally demonstrated by the single crystal structure of the complex, which revealed outstanding concave-convex shape complementarity between the two components. This highlights the potential application of molecular belts in the purification and separation of fullerenes.

Tethered Helical Ladder-Type Aromatic Lactams

Tethered nonplanar aromatics (TNAs) make up an important class of nonplanar aromatic compounds showing unique features. However, the knowledge on the synthesis, structures, and properties of TNAs remains insufficient. In this work, a new type of TNAs, the tethered aromatic lactams, is synthesized via Pd-catalyzed consecutive intramolecular direct arylations. These molecules possess a helical ladder-type conjugated system of up to 13 fused rings. The overall yields ranged from 3.4 to 4.3%. The largest of the tethered aromatic lactams, 6L-Bu-C14, demonstrates a guest-adaptive hosting capability of TNAs for the first time. When binding fullerene guests, the cavity of 6L-Bu-C14 became more circular to better accommodate spherical fullerene molecules. The host-guest interaction is thoroughly studied by X-ray crystallography, theoretical calculations, fluorescence titration, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titration experiments. 6L-Bu-C14 shows stronger binding with C70 than with C60 due to the better convex-concave π-π interaction. P and M enantiomers of all tethered aromatic lactams show distinct and persistent chiroptical properties and demonstrate the potential of chiral TNAs as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emitters.

Dual-controlled guest release from coordination cages

Despite having significant applications in the construction of controlled delivery systems with high anti-interference capability, to our knowledge dual-controlled molecular release has not yet been achieved based on small molecular/supramolecular entities. Herein, we report a dual-controlled release system based on coordination cages, for which releasing the guest from the cage demands synchronously altering the coordinative metal cations and the solvent. The cages, Hg5L2 and Ag5L2, are constructed via coordination-driven self-assembly of a corannulene-based ligand. While Hg5L2 shows a solvent-independent guest encapsulation in all the studied solvents, Ag5L2 is able to encapsulate the guests in only some of the solvents, such as acetone-d6, but will liberate the encapsulated guests in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane-d2. Hg5L2 and Ag5L2 are interconvertible. Thus, the release of guests from Hg5L2 in acetone-d6 can be achieved, but requires two separate operations, including metal substitutions and a change of the solvent. Dual-controlled systems as such could be useful in complicated molecular release process to avoid those undesired stimulus-responses.

Recent advances in supramolecular fullerene chemistry

Fullerene chemistry has come a long way since 1990, when the first bulk production of C60 was reported. In the past decade, progress in supramolecular chemistry has opened some remarkable and previously unexpected opportunities regarding the selective (multiple) functionalization of fullerenes and their (self)assembly into larger structures and frameworks. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of these recent developments. We describe how macrocycles and cages that bind strongly to C60 can be used to block undesired addition patterns and thus allow the selective preparation of single-isomer addition products. We also discuss how the emergence of highly shape-persistent macrocycles has opened opportunities for the study of photoactive fullerene dyads and triads as well as the preparation of mechanically interlocked compounds. The preparation of two- or three-dimensional fullerene materials is another research area that has seen remarkable progress over the past few years. Due to the rapidly decreasing price of C60 and C70, we believe that these achievements will translate into all fields where fullerenes have traditionally (third-generation solar cells) and more recently been applied (catalysis, spintronics).

Selective Encapsulation and Chiral Induction of C60 and C70 Fullerenes by Axially Chiral Porous Aromatic Cages

Chiral induction has been an important topic in chemistry, not only for its relevance in understanding the mysterious phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking in nature but also due to its critical implications in medicine and the chiral industry. The induced chirality of fullerenes by host-guest interactions has been rarely reported, mainly attributed to their chiral resistance from high symmetry and challenges in their accessibility. Herein, we report two new pairs of chiral porous aromatic cages (PAC), R-PAC-2, S-PAC-2 (with Br substituents) and R-PAC-3, S-PAC-3 (with CH3 substituents) enantiomers. PAC-2, rather than PAC-3, achieves fullerene encapsulation and selective binding of C70 over C60 in fullerene carbon soot. More significantly, the occurrence of chiral induction between R-PAC-2, S-PAC-2 and fullerenes is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and the intense CD signal within the absorption region of fullerenes. DFT calculations reveal the contribution of electrostatic effects originating from face-to-face arene-fullerene interactions dominate C70 selectivity and elucidate the substituent effect on fullerene encapsulation. The disturbance from the differential interactions between fullerene and surrounding chiral cages on the intrinsic highly symmetric electronic structure of fullerene could be the primary reason accounting for the induced chirality of fullerene.

Exciplex Emission and Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Based Bischromophoric Cyclophanes and Homo[2]catenanes

Energy transfer and exciplex emission are not only crucial photophysical processes in many living organisms but also important for the development of smart photonic materials. We report, herein, the rationally designed synthesis and characterization of two highly charged bischromophoric homo[2]catenanes and one cyclophane incorporating a combination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., anthracene, pyrene, and perylene, which are intrinsically capable of supporting energy transfer and exciplex formation. The possible coconformations of the homo[2]catenanes, on account of their dynamic behavior, have been probed by Density Functional Theory calculations. The unique photophysical properties of these exotic molecules have been explored by steady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. The tetracationic pyrene-perylene cyclophane system exhibits emission emanating from a highly efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) mechanism which occurs in 48 ps, while the octacationic homo[2]catenane displays a weak exciplex photoluminescence following extremely fast (<0.3 ps) exciplex formation. The in-depth fundamental understanding of these photophysical processes involved in the fluorescence of bischromophoric cyclophanes and homo[2]catenanes paves the way for their use in future bioapplications and photonic devices.

Gram-scale synthesis of a covalent nanocage that preserves the redox properties of encapsulated fullerenes

Discrete nanocages provide a way to solubilize, separate, and tune the properties of fullerenes, but these 3D receptors cannot usually be synthesized easily from inexpensive starting materials, limiting their utility. Herein, we describe the first fullerene-binding nanocage (Cage⁴⁺) that can be made efficiently on a gram scale. Cage⁴⁺ was prepared in up to 57% yield by the formation of pyridinium linkages between complemantary porphyrin components that are themselves readily accessible. Cage⁴⁺ binds C₆₀ and C₇₀ with large association constants (>10⁸ M⁻¹), thereby solubilizing these fullerenes in polar solvents. Fullerene association and redox-properties were subsequently investigated across multiple charge states of the host-guest complexes. Remarkably, neutral and singly reduced fullerenes bind with similar strengths, leaving their 0/1⁻ redox couples minimally perturbed and fully reversible, whereas other hosts substantially alter the redox properties of fullerenes. Thus, C₆₀@Cage⁴⁺ and C₇₀@Cage⁴⁺ may be useful as solubilized fullerene derivatives that preserve the inherent electron-accepting and electron-transfer capabilities of the fullerenes. Fulleride dianions were also found to bind strongly in Cage⁴⁺, while further reduction is centered on the host, leading to lowered association of the fulleride guest in the case of C₆₀²⁻.

This report describes the first gram-scale synthesis of a nanocage that can host fullerenes (C₆₀ and C₇₀). The redox properties of the fullerenes are preserved in this host, enabling characterization of complexes with fulleride anions and dianions.

Multifunctional Anthracene-Based Ni-MOF with Encapsulated Fullerenes: Polarized Fluorescence Emission and Selective Separation of C70 from C60

We report an anthracene-based Ni-MOF [Ni(II) metal-organic framework, {[Ni(μ₂-L)₂Cl₂]·x(C₆H₆)·y(MeOH)}_n (1), L = anthracene-9,10-diylbis(methylene)diisonicotinate] whose crystal structure reveals the presence of hexagonal channels with a pore size of 1.4 nm that can accommodate guests such as C₆₀ and C₇₀. Both confocal fluorescence and Raman microscopy results are in agreement with a homogeneous distribution of fullerenes throughout the single crystals of 1. Efficient energy transfer from 1 to the fullerenes was observed, which emitted partially polarized fluorescence emission. Stronger binding between 1 and C₇₀ versus C₆₀ was confirmed from HPLC analysis of the dissolved material and provides a basis for the selective retention of C₇₀ in liquid chromatography columns packed with 1.

Synthesis of diacenes still represents a considerable challenge due to their poor stability and low solubility.

A Distorted Hybrid Corannulene-Dibenzobistetracene

We have designed and synthesized a new type of distorted nanographene by Diels-Alder and Scholl reactions that contains one dibenzobistetracene (DBT, 1) core and two end-capping corannulene units. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses demonstrate that nanographene 1 contains two [5] helicene subunits with a dihedral angle of 62°, consequently leading to the distorted DBT core. In addition, the photophysical properties and (non)aromaticity of 1 were investigated by the absorption and emission spectra in combination with theoretical calculations.

Graphitic supramolecular architectures based on corannulene, fullerene, and beyond

In this Feature Article, we survey the advances made in the field of fulleretic materials over the last five years. Merging the intriguing characteristics of fulleretic molecules with hierarchical materials can lead to enhanced properties of the latter for applications in optoelectronic, biomaterial, and heterogeneous catalysis sectors. As there has been significant growth in the development of fullerene- and corannulene-containing materials, this article will focus on studies performed during the last five years exclusively, and highlight the recent trends in designing fulleretic compounds and understanding their properties, that has enriched the repertoire of carbon-rich functional materials.

Homochiral Dodecanuclear Lanthanide "Cage in Cage" for Enantioselective Separation

It is extremely difficult to anticipate the structure and the stereochemistry of a complex, particularly when the ligand is flexible and the metal node adopts diverse coordination numbers. When trivalent lanthanides (Ln^III) and enantiopure amino acid ligands are utilized as building blocks, self-assembly sometimes yields rare chiral polynuclear structures. In this study, an enantiopure carboxyl-functionalized amino acid-based ligand with C₃ symmetry reacts with lanthanum cations to give a homochiral porous coordination cage, (Δ/Λ)₁₂-PCC-57. The dodecanuclear lanthanide cage has an unprecedented octahedral "cage-in-cage" framework. During the self-assembly, the chirality is transferred from the enantiopure ligand and fixed by the binuclear lanthanide cluster to give 12 metal centers that have either Δ or Λ homochiral stereochemistry. The cage exhibits excellent enantioselective separation of racemic alcohols, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, and multiple commercially available drugs. This finding exhibits a rare example of a multinuclear lanthanide complex with a dual-walled topology and homochirality. The highly ordered self-assembly and self-sorting of flexible amino acids and lanthanides shed light on the chiral transformation between different complicated artificial systems that mimic natural enzymes.

Effective Encapsulation of C60 by Metal-Organic Frameworks with Polyamide Macrocyclic Linkers

A flexible benzylic amide macrocycle, functionalized with two carboxylic acid groups, was employed as the organic ligand for the preparation of robust copper(II)- and zinc(II)-based metal-organic frameworks. These polymers crystallized in the C2/m space group of the monoclinic crystal system, creating non-interpenetrated channels in one direction with an extraordinary solvent-accessible volume of 46 %. Unlike metal-organic rotaxane frameworks having benzylic amide macrocycles as linkers, the absence of the thread in these novel reticular materials causes a decrease of dimensionality and an improvement of pore size and dynamic guest adaptability. We studied the incorporation of fullerene C₆₀ inside the adjustable pocket generated between two macrocycles connected to the same dinuclear clusters, occupying a remarkable 98 % of the cavities inside the network. The use of these materials as hosts for the selective recognition of different fullerenes was evaluated, mainly encapsulating the smaller size fullerene derivative in several mixtures of C₆₀ and C₇₀ .

Complexation of an Anthracene-Triptycene Nanocage Host with Fullerene Guests through CH⋅⋅⋅π Contacts

A bicyclic anthracene macrocycle containing two triptycene units at the bridgehead positions was synthesized by Ni-mediated coupling of the corresponding precursor as a cage-shaped aromatic hydrocarbon host. This cage host formed an inclusion complex with C₆₀ or C₇₀ guest in 1 : 1 ratio in solution. The association constants (K_a ) determined by the fluorescence titration method were 1.3×10⁴ and 3.3×10⁵  L mol ^-1 for the C₆₀ and C₇₀ complexes, respectively, at 298 K in toluene. DFT calculations revealed that the guest molecules were included in the middle of the cavity with several CH⋅⋅⋅π contacts. The strong affinity of the cage host for the fullerene guests and the high selectivity toward C₇₀ are discussed on the basis of spectroscopic and structural data.

Emerging Spacers-Based Ligands for Supramolecular Coordination Complexes

The design and self-assembly of supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) i. e., discrete cyclic metalloarchitectures such as cycles, cages, mesocates, and helicates with desired size, shape, and properties have been increasing exponentially owing to their potential applications in molecular sensors, molecular cargos, molecular recognition, and catalysis. The introduction of the organic motifs and metal complexes as a spacer provides functionality to the metalloarchitecture. This review mainly focusses on newly evolving spacer based ligands employed to yield simple to high-order metallosupramolecular assemblies using straight-forward approaches. The new spacers including corannulene, organic cyclic framework, bicyclic organic motifs, aliphatic chain, metalloligands, triarylboron, BODIPY, azaphosphatrane, phosphine, and thio/selenophosphates offer a great set of properties and in-built functionalities to the metalloarchitectures which are discussed in this review.

Metal–organic cages for molecular separations

Separation technology is central to industries as diverse as petroleum, pharmaceuticals, mining and life sciences. Metal-organic cages, a class of molecular containers formed via coordination-driven self-assembly, show great promise as separation agents. Precise control of the shape, size and functionalization of cage cavities enables them to selectively bind and distinguish a wide scope of physicochemically similar substances in solution. Extensive research has, thus, been performed involving separations of high-value targets using coordination cages, ranging from gases and liquids to compounds dissolved in solution. Enantiopure capsules also show great potential for the separation of chiral molecules. The use of crystalline cages as absorbents, or the incorporation of cages into polymer membranes, could increase the selectivity and efficiency of separation processes. This Review covers recent progress in using metal-organic cages to achieve separations, with discussion of the many methods of using them in this context. Challenges and potential future developments are also discussed.

Porphyrin bearing phenothiazine pincers as hosts for fullerene binding via concave–convex complementarity: synthesis and complexation study

Free base porphyrin hosts, m-(PTZ)4-H2P and p-(PTZ)4-H2P, tethered with four phenothiazine moieties at the meso-position via a flexible ethoxy phenyl linker were synthesized and used for the selective complexation of fullerenes, C60 and C70.

Corannulene-based nanographene containing helical motifs

The synthesis and structural analyses of corannulene-PAH hybrids 1 with a [4] helicene subunit and 2 with a [7] helicene subunit have been reported.

Water-soluble host-guest complexes between fullerenes and a sugar-functionalized tribenzotriquinacene assembling to microspheres

A sugar-functionalized water-soluble tribenzotriquinacene derivative bearing six glucose residues, TBTQ-(OG) 6 , was synthesized and its interaction with C60 and C70-fullerene in co-organic solvents and aqueous solution was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The association stoichiometry of the complexes TBTQ-(OG) 6 with C60 and TBTQ-(OG) 6 with C70 was found to be 1:1 with binding constants of K a = (1.50 ± 0.10) × 105 M-1 and K a = (2.20 ± 0.16) × 105 M-1, respectively. The binding affinity between TBTQ-(OG) 6 and C60 was further verified by Raman spectroscopy. The geometry of the complex of TBTQ-(OG) 6 with C60 deduced from DFT calculations indicates that the driving force of the complexation is mainly due to the hydrophobic effect and to host-guest π-π interactions. Hydrophobic surface simulations showed that TBTQ-(OG) 6 and C60 forms an amphiphilic supramolecular host-guest complex, which further assembles to microspheres with diameters of 0.3-3.5 μm, as determined by scanning electron microscopy.

Tuning the Properties of Corannulene-Based Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Varying the Fusing Positions of Corannulene

The selective fusions with pyrene derivative to the rim and flank bonds of corannulene generated 4 and 7, respectively, which underwent a Scholl reaction to provide novel distorted PAHs CORA-1 and CORA-2, consisting of corannulene and dibenzocoronene units with different connections between them. The studies revealed that the properties of these PAHs are highly dependent on the fusing positions of corannulene.

A covalent organic cage compound acting as a supramolecular shadow mask for the regioselective functionalization of C60

A trigonal-bipyramidal covalent organic cage compound serves as an efficient host to form stable 1 : 1-complexes with C₆₀ and C₇₀. Fullerene encapsulation has been comprehensively studied by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, mass spectrometry as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Exohedral functionalization of encapsulated C₆₀via threefold Prato reaction revealed high selectivity for the symmetry-matched all-trans-3 addition pattern.

The taming of the Prato reaction: a covalent organic cage compound serves as a supramolecular template for the regioselective functionalization of C₆₀.

An S10-Symmetric 5-Fold Interlocked [2]Catenane

The reaction of sym-pentakis(4-aminothiophenyl)corannulene with 2-formyl-6-methylpyridine and Cu^I or 2-formyl-1,10-phenanthroline and M^II (M = Co, Zn) yields an S₁₀-symmetric 5-fold interlocked [2]catenane of two interpenetrating [Cu^I₅L₂]⁵⁺ cages or D₅-symmetric [M^II₅L₂]¹⁰⁺ cages, respectively. The new structures were characterized by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Density functional theory computations point to dispersive energies on par with traditional covalent bond energies. Subcomponent exchange reactions favored formation of the [Co^II₅L₂]¹⁰⁺ cage over the [Cu^I₁₀L₄]¹⁰⁺ catenane. The single cage and catenane each cocrystallized with a corannulene guest to form a bowl-in-bowl substructure.

Self-Assembly of Bowl-Shaped Naphthalimide-Annulated Corannulene

The self-assembly of a bowl-shaped naphthalimide-annulated corannulene of high solubility has been studied in a variety of solvents by NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Evaluation by the anti-cooperative K2-K model revealed the formation of supramolecular dimers of outstanding thermodynamic stability. Further structural proof for the almost exclusive formation of dimers over extended aggregates is demonstrated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) measurements as well as by theoretical calculations. Thus, herein we present the first report of a supramolecular dimer of an annulated corannulene derivative in solution and discuss its extraordinarily high thermodynamic stability with association constants up to >106 M-1 in methylcyclohexane, which is comparable to the association constants given for planar phthalocyanine and perylene bisimide dyes.
