Abstract
A family of chiral nanographenes bearing [6]helicene units has been synthesized via the classical Scholl reaction. Inserting the [6]helicene unit into the parent nanographene skeleton can result in different structural topologies and optoelectric properties. Moreover, the isolated enantiomers exhibit attractive chiroptical properties.

Abstract
A computational study (ωB97X-D/6-31G(d)) of the Mallory photocyclization reaction has revealed that the well-established dihydrophenanthrene (DHP) intermediates can adopt either closed-shell (CS) or open-shell-diradical (OS) singlet ground states. A detailed study of the properties of DHPs allowed their classifications as OS, borderline-OS, borderline-CS, or CS intermediates. The triplet electronic state and higher energy CS* isomer of all the OS singlet diradicals were computationally located, and the expected relationship between the diradical index, yo, and the triplet energy and the OS-CS* energy gaps was established. The importance of aromaticity in stabilizing the OS singlet diradicals was confirmed by using the Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA). The thermal decompositions of DHPs by cycloreversions to regenerate the Mallory starting materials were also studied. The cycloreversion mechanism was described as a homolytic cleavage characterized by an anchimeric assistance continuum promoted by bis-β-homolytic cleavage.

Abstract
In this article, effects of di-, tetra-, and octafluorination on the structural and chiroptical properties of carbo[5-8]helicenes are reported. Three fluorinated derivatives are designed from each parent carbohelicene by substituting either one, two, or four hydrogens at each terminal ring with fluorine atoms. Excited states properties such as UV-vis and CD spectra of all the six fluorinated carbohelicenes are computed at the ADC(2)/def2-TZVP level, and the results are compared against the results of their respective parent carbohelicene. In addition, CPL properties are also computed at the same level of theory. In the case of carbo[5]helicene (5H), gCPL decreases with an increase in the degree of fluorination. A similar observation is made in carbo[6]helicene (6H) too, although the value for tetrafluorinated 6H is slightly larger than for difluorinated 6H. Di- and tetrafluorination in carbo[7]helicene (7H), and all types of considered fluorination in carbo[8]helicene (8H) produce improved gCPL results. Results for fluorescence rate constants are also shown. Results are analyzed in terms of the transition dipole moment vectors and the angles between those.

Abstract
We present the first helicene carbon nanoohop that integrates a [6]helicene into [7]cycloparaphenylene. The [6]helicene endows the helicene carbon nanohoop with chiroptical properties and configurational stability typical for higher helicenes, while the radially conjugated seven para‐phenylenes largely determine the optoelectronic properties. The structure of the helicene carbon nanoohop was unambiguously characterized by NMR, MS and X‐ray analysis that revealed that it possesses a topology of a Möbius strip in the solid state and in solution. The chirality transfers from the [6]helicene to the para‐phenylenes and leads to a pronounced circular dichroism and bright circularly polarized luminescence, which is affected by the structural topology of the nanohoop.

Localized Antiaromaticity Hotspot Drives Reductive Dehydrogenative Cyclizations in Bis- and Mono-Helicenes. J Am Chem Soc 2022; 144:12321-12338. Abstract
We describe reductive dehydrogenative cyclizations that form hepta-, nona-, and decacyclic anionic graphene subunits from mono- and bis-helicenes with an embedded five-membered ring. The reaction of bis-helicenes can either proceed to the full double annulation or be interrupted by addition of molecular oxygen at an intermediate stage. The regioselectivity of the interrupted cyclization cascade for bis-helicenes confirms that relief of antiaromaticity is a dominant force for these facile ring closures. Computational analysis reveals the unique role of the preexisting negatively charged cyclopentadienyl moiety in directing the second negative charge at a specific remote location and, thus, creating a localized antiaromatic region. This region is the hotspot that promotes the initial cyclization. Computational studies, including MO analysis, molecular electrostatic potential maps, and NICS(1.7)ZZ calculations, evaluate the interplay of the various effects including charge delocalization, helicene strain release, and antiaromaticity. The role of antiaromaticity relief is further supported by efficient reductive closure of the less strained monohelicenes where the relief of antiaromaticity promotes the cyclization even when the strain is substantially reduced. The latter finding significantly expands the scope of this reductive alternative to the Scholl ring closure.

Abstract
A series of aza[n]helicenes (n = 4-7) was synthesized using a photocyclodehydrochlorination of 1-chloro-N-aryl-2-naphthamides as a general synthetic procedure introducing the nitrogen atom to the third ring of the helicene framework. The effect of the nitrogen presence in the helicene skeleton on the physicochemical properties of the prepared aza[n]helicenes was studied and compared to those of the parent carbo-analogues. The insertion of a nitrogen atom into the outer edge of the helicene molecule has a severe impact on certain physicochemical properties such as optical rotation, electrostatic potentials, and intermolecular interactions. On the other hand, some other properties such as UV/vis, fluorescence, and phosphorescence spectra remained almost unaffected when compared to the parent carbohelicenes. A nitrogen atom can be also used for further derivatization, which can lead to further modification of helicene properties, as manifested here in the fluorescence changes induced by protonation.

Abstract
We described a Ni-bidentate oxazoline catalyzed highly enantio- and diastereoselective decarboxylative aldol reaction of 2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-carboxylic acid/2-oxochromane-3-carboxylic acid derivatives with different kinds of carbonyls. Under optimal reaction conditions, α-substituted β-hydroxy butyrolactones and dihydrocoumarins with an all-carbon quaternary stereocenter have been generated with high levels of functional-group compatibility. Furthermore, proficient transformations of products were also described, in which an aliphatic tertiary alcohol and a multi-substituted 1,4-diol were smoothly constructed through hydrogenation and ring-opening reaction, respectively.

Abstract
The intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions of helicenes deform their π-conjugated screw-shaped skeletons. In particular, terminally tetrafluorinated [7]helicene (F4 -[7]helicene) undergoes a photoinduced Diels-Alder reaction followed by a photoinduced double fluorine atom transfer. Herein, we thoroughly investigated this photochemical domino process by decreasing the level of fluorine substitution. F3 -[7]Helicenes bearing two fluorine atoms at the dienophile terminal underwent photoinduced Diels-Alder reactions, but the whole domino process became slow. F2 -[7]Helicene, which is difluorinated only at the dienophile terminal, was also photolabile. As a result, two fluorine atoms were sufficient for the photochemical domino reaction to occur. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that F2 -[7]helicene was less compressed than F4 -[7]helicene, indicating that terminal polyfluorination enhanced the intramolecular arene-fluoroarene stacking interactions and thus promoted the transformations.

Abstract
A first series of fluorinated [n]helical compounds (n=5 and 6) with the dihydroindenofluorene scaffold was prepared in 5 or 9 (octafluorinated dihydroindenofluorene) steps and their photophysical properties were determined. Rh-catalyzed intramolecular [2+2+2] cyclotrimerization of triyndiols, which were prepared in a modular fashion from simple starting material such as fluorinated haloarylcarbaldehydes, to the intermediate [n]helical dihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorene-5,8-diols was the crucial synthetic step and proceeded with high efficacy. Their further transformation gave the desired selectively fluorinated bispirodihydroindeno[2,1-c]fluorenes. Their absorption and emission spectra were recorded. The fluorescence quantum yields were up to 92 % and the emission maxima were red-shifted in comparison with their non-fluorinated counterparts (386-413 nm).

Although it is possible to prepare the desired phenanthridines using such an approach, the reaction has to be performed in the presence of acid and TEMPO to increase reaction rate and yield. The reaction kinetics was studied on a series of substituted imines covering the range from electron-withdrawing to electron-donating substituents. It was found that imines with electron-withdrawing substituents react one order of magnitude faster than imines bearing electron-donating groups. The 1H NMR monitoring of the reaction course showed that a significant part of the Z isomer in the reaction is transformed into E isomer which is more prone to photocyclization. The portion of the Z isomer transformed showed a linear correlation to the Hammett substituent constants. The reaction scope was expanded towards synthesis of larger aromatic systems, namely to the synthesis of strained aromatic systems, e.g., helicenes. In this respect, it was found that the scope of oxidative photocyclization of aromatic imines is limited to the formation of no more than five ortho-fused aromatic rings.

Abstract
The partial fluorination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons often produces a layered crystal packing, where fluorinated aromatic surfaces are stacked over nonfluorinated aromatic surfaces. Herein, we report the synthesis and crystal packing of partially fluorinated [4]helicenes with steric congestion resulting from H and F atoms in the fjord region. F6 -[4]Helicene forms head-to-tail columnar stacks consisting of an alternate arrangement of perfluorinated and nonfluorinated naphthalene moieties. With decreasing fluorine content, aromatic stacking switched from arene-fluoroarene (ArH -ArF ) hetero-stacking to ArH -ArH /ArF -ArF homo-stacking with the help of intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅F contacts in the fjord region. As a result, head-to-head columnar stacks appear. Therefore, the conventional ArH -ArF stacking motif is not always applicable to Fn -[4]helicenes with twisted π-surfaces.

Abstract
Replacement of the m-phenylene moiety of m-benziporphyrins with the 2,7-naphthalenyl subunit yielded 28-hetero-2,7-naphthiporphyrins-macrocycles that can be considered as expanded carbaporphyrinoids. This group retains some features of parent m-benziporphyrins, but due to larger size and different shape of the macrocyclic cavity, their coordination properties are different. Upon reduction and conformational rearrangement the 28-thia- and 28-selena-2,7-naphthiporphyrin form organophosphorus(V) complexes.
