Uncommon Polyoxygenated Sesquiterpenoids from South China Sea Soft Coral Lemnalia flava

Terpenoids from the Soft Coral Stereonephthya bellissima

A detailed chemical study of the extract from the soft coral Stereonephthya bellissima resulted in the isolation and identification of seven new sesquiterpenoids, bellissinanes A-G (1-7), along with four new diterpenes (8-11). Bellissinane A (1) is the third reported nardosinane-type sesquiterpene bearing a 6/5/6 tricyclic system. Bellissinanes C and D (3, 4) contain a phenylethylamine fragment, which is relatively unusual in marine organisms. Bellissinanes E-G (5-7) belong to the rare class of nornardosinane sesquiterpenoids. Structurally uncommon octahydro-1H-indenyl-type and prenyleudesmane-type skeletons were characterized for herpetopanone B (8) and bellissimain A (9), respectively. Bellissinane E (5) exhibited in vivo angiogenesis-promoting activity.

Exploring the chemical diversity of sesquiterpenes from the rarely studied south China sea soft coral Sinularia tumulosa assisted by molecular networking strategy

Molecular networking strategy-based prioritization of the isolation of the rarely studied soft coral Sinularia tumulosa yielded 14 sesquiterpenes. These isolated constituents consisted of nine different types of carbon frameworks, namely asteriscane, humulane, capillosane, seco-asteriscane, guaiane, dumortane, cadinane, farnesane, and benzofarnesane. Among them, situmulosaols A-C (1, 3 and 4) were previously undescribed ones, whose structures with absolute configurations were established by the combination of extensive spectral data analyses, quantum mechanical-nuclear magnetic resonance and time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism calculations, the Snatzke's method, and the modified Mosher's method. Notably, situmulosaol C (4) was the second member of capillosane-type sesquiterpenes. The plausible biogenetic relationships of these skeletally different sesquiterpenes were proposed. All sesquiterpenoids were evaluated for their antibacterial, cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory effects. The bioassay results showed compound 14 exhibited significant antibacterial activities against a variety of fish and human pathogenic bacteria with MIC90 values ranging from 3.6 to 33.8 μg/mL. Moreover, moderate cytotoxic effects against HEL cells for components 13 and 14 and moderate inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory responses in RAW264.7 cells for substance 13 were also observed.

Lemneolemnanes A-D, Four Uncommon Sesquiterpenoids from the Soft Coral Lemnalia sp

Four undescribed sesquiterpenoids, lemneolemnanes A-D (1-4), have been isolated from the marine soft coral Lemnalia sp. The absolute configurations of the stereogenic carbons of 1-4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 are epimers at C-3 and have an unusual skeleton with a formyl group on C-6. Compound 3 possesses an uncommonly rearranged carbon skeleton, while 4 has a 6/5/5 tricyclic system. Compound 1 showed significant anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) activity in a humanized Caenorhabditis elegans AD pathological model.

Coriaceumins A-D, the First Nitrogen-Containing Crenulide Diterpenoids from the Brown Alga Dictyota coriacea Collected in the East China Sea

A phytochemical investigation of an East China Sea collection of the brown alga Dictyota coriacea has led to the isolation of four novel nitrogen-containing crenulide diterpenoids, named coriaceumins A-D (1-4), two rare nitrogenous xenicane diterpenoids, dictyolactams C (5) and D (6), and one known crenulide diterpenoid, hydroxycrenulide (7). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by detailed spectroscopic data analyses, including HRESIMS and 1D/2D NMR. The absolute configurations were determined by a comparison of the experimental ECD spectra with the spectra computed by DFT-based quantum chemical calculations. Coriaceumins A-D (1-4) represent the first examples of nitrogen-containing crenulide diterpenoids. In a bioassay, compounds 2, 3, 5, and 7 were found to exhibit different levels of inhibitory effects against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) with IC50 values ranging from 7.3 to 19 μM. In addition, the primary structure-activity relationships of all the isolates were summarized.

Chemistry and bioactivity of secondary metabolites from South China Sea marine fauna and flora: recent research advances and perspective

Marine organisms often produce a variety of metabolites with unique structures and diverse biological activities that enable them to survive and struggle in the extremely challenging environment. During the last two decades, our group devoted great effort to the discovery of pharmaceutically interesting lead compounds from South China Sea marine plants and invertebrates. We discovered numerous marine secondary metabolites spanning a wide range of structural classes, various biosynthetic origins and various aspects of biological activities. In a series of reviews, we have summarized the bioactive natural products isolated from Chinese marine flora and fauna found during 2000-2012. The present review provides an updated summary covering our latest research progress and development in the last decade (2012-2022) highlighting the discovery of over 400 novel marine secondary metabolites with promising bioactivities from South China Sea marine organisms.

Anti-inflammatory aromadendrane- and cadinane-type sesquiterpenoids from the South China Sea sponge Acanthella cavernosa

One new aromadendrane-type sesquiterpenoid, namely ximaocavernosin P [(+)-1], and three new cadinane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely (+)-maninsigin D [(+)-4], (+)- and (−)-ximaocavernosin Q [(+)- and (−)-5], together with five related known ones [2, 3, (−)-4, 6, and 7], were isolated from the Hainan sponge Acanthella cavernosa. Compounds 4 and 5 were isolated as racemic forms, which were further separated to the corresponding enantiomers [(+)-4/(−)-4 and (+)-5/(−)-5], respectively, by using chiral-phase HPLC. The structures of new compounds were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the reported data. In addition, the absolute configuration of optically pure (+)-1 and 2 were determined by time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD) calculations or X-ray diffraction analysis. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of these sesquiterpenoids and their internal correlation were proposed and discussed. In an in vitro bioassay, (+)-aristolone (3) exhibited promising anti-inflammatory activity by the inhibition of LPS-induced TNF-α and CCL2 release in RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Weizhouochrones: Gorgonian-Derived Symmetric Dimers and Their Structure Elucidation Using Anisotropic NMR Combined with DP4+ Probability and CASE-3D

Natural product dimers have intriguing structural features and often have remarkable pharmacological activities. We report here two uncommon marine gorgonian-derived symmetric dimers, weizhouochrones A (1) and B (2), with indenone-derived monomers, that were isolated from the coral Anthogorgia ochracea collected from the South China Sea. These dimers are difficult targets for structure elucidation that solely relies upon conventional NMR data such as NOEs and J-couplings. Here, to explore the application of emerging methods on the structure elucidation of challenging molecules, we explored a number of different anisotropic and computational NMR approaches. The measurements of anisotropic NMR parameters of weizhouochrone A, including residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) and residual chemical shift anisotropy (RCSA), allowed us to successfully determine the planar structure and its relative configuration. This result was corroborated by a computational NMR analysis based on DP4+ probability and computer-assisted 3D structure elucidation (CASE-3D).

Programmable alignment media from self-assembled oligopeptide amphiphiles for the measurement of independent sets of residual dipolar couplings in organic solvents

NMR spectroscopy in anisotropic media has emerged as a powerful technique for the structural elucidation of organic molecules. Its application requires weak alignment of analytes by means of suitable alignment media. Although a number of alignment media, that are compatible with organic solvents, have been introduced in the last 20 years, acquiring a number of independent, non-linearly related sets of anisotropic NMR data from the same organic solvent system remains a formidable challenge, which is however crucial for the alignment simulations and deriving dynamic and structural information of organic molecules unambiguously. Herein, we introduce a programmable strategy to construct several distinct peptide-based alignment media by adjusting the amino acid sequence, which allows us to measure independent sets of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) in a highly efficient and accurate manner. This study opens a new avenue for de novo structure determination of organic compounds without requiring prior structural information.

Nardosinane-related antimicrobial terpenoids from Lemnalia sp. soft coral

Ten nardosinane-related terpenoids, including five unreported nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, parathyrsoidins H-J and linardosinenes D-E, two unusual condensed nardosinanes, named nardosinoids A and B, together with three known related compounds, were isolated from the Xisha soft coral Lemnalia sp. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and comparison of experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism data. Nardosinoids A and B are the first condensates of two nardosinanes. All these compounds were evaluated for antimicrobial activity in vitro. Nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids parathyrsoidin I and linardosinene E showed inhibitory effects against influenza A virus H1N1 (IC₅₀ 7.1 and 1.1 μM, respectively). In addition, nardosinoids A and B exhibited antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis (MIC 4-8 μg/mL).

Lemnalemnanes A-C, Three Rare Rearranged Sesquiterpenoids from the Soft Corals Paralemnalia thyrsoides and Lemnalia sp

Three novel sesquiterpenoids, lemnalemnanes A-C (1-3), were obtained from marine soft corals Paralemnalia thyrsoides and Lemnalia sp. Their structures were determined by 1D/2D NMR spectroscopy, HRESIMS, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (Cu Kα), Mosher's method, and ECD quantum chemistry calculations. Lemnalemnane A (1) possessed an intriguing basket-like structure with a spiro[bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-furan core, while lemnalemnanes B (2) and C (3) exhibited unusual 6/6/5 and 6/5/5 carbon skeletons, respectively. In the proposed biosynthesis pathway, 1-3 were suspected to originate from the same precursor, 4-O-deacetylparalemnolin D (4), a compound coisolated from both aforementioned species. Furthermore, lemnalemnane C (3) exhibited strong in vivo promoting-angiogenesis activity.

Discovery and photosynthesis of sinuaustones A and B, diterpenoids with a novel carbon scaffold isolated from soft coral Sinularia australiensis from Hainan

Two novel diterpenoids, sinuaustones A (1) and B (2), featuring an unprecedented tricyclo[9.3.1.03,15]tetradecane carbon framework were isolated from the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia australiensis.

Marine Terpenic Endoperoxides

Organic extracts of marine invertebrates, mainly sponges, from seas all over the world are well known for their high in vitro anticancer and antibiotic activities which make them promising sources of compounds with potential use as pharmaceutical leads. Most of the structures discovered so far have a peculiar structural feature in common: a 1,2-dioxane ring. This is a highly reactive heterocycle that can be considered as an endoperoxide function. Together with other structural features, this group could be responsible for the strong biological activities of the substances present in the extracts. Numerous research programs have focused on their structural elucidation and total synthesis since the seventies. As a consequence, the number of established chiral centres and the similarity between different naturally occurring substances is increasingly higher. Most of these compounds have a terpenoid nature, mainly diterpene and sesterterpene, with several peculiar structural features, such as the loss of one carbon atom. Although there are many reviews dealing with the occurrence of marine peroxides, their activities, or potential pharmaceutical uses, no one has focused on those having a terpene origin and the endoperoxide function. We present here a comprehensive review of these compounds paying special attention to their structural features and their biological activity.

Sinusiaetone A, an Anti-inflammatory Norditerpenoid with a Bicyclo[11.3.0]hexadecane Nucleus from the Hainan Soft Coral Sinularia siaesensis

A novel norditerpenoid, sinusiaetone A (1), featuring an uncommon bicyclo[11.3.0]hexadecane carbon skeleton, and four polyoxygenated cembranoids (2-5) were isolated from the Hainan soft coral Sinularia siaesensis. Their structures were established by spectroscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction, quantum chemical computational approaches, and/or a modified Mosher's method. A plausible biosynthetic pathway of 1 and its biogenetic relationship with 2-5 were proposed. New compounds 1-3 displayed an interesting inhibitory activity against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation in BV-2 microglial cells.

Antimicrobial Terpenoids from South China Sea Soft Coral Lemnalia sp

Chemical investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Lemnalia sp. afforded 13 structurally diverse terpenoids, including three new neolemnane sesquiterpene lineolemnenes E–G (1–3); a new aristolane-type sesquiterpenoid, 2-acetoxy-aristolane (4); four new decalin-type bicyclic diterpenes, named biofloranates A−D (5−8); a new serrulatane, named euplexaurene D (9); and a new aromadendrane-type diterpenoid cneorubin K (10), together with three known related compounds (11−13). The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, the Mosher’s method, and ECD analysis. Compounds 1–13 were tested in a wide panel of biological assays. Lineolemnene J (3) showed weak cytotoxicity against the CCRF-CEM cancer cell line. The isolated new diterpenes, except euplexaurene D (9), demonstrated moderate antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus with a MIC of 4−64 μg/mL. Compound 2 exhibited a mild inhibitory effect against influenza A H1N1 virus (IC₅₀ = 5.9 µM).

Further new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids from the Xisha soft coral Litophyton nigrum

Further chemical investigation of the Xisha soft coral Litophyton nigrum has resulted in the isolation of four new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely linardosinenes D-G (1-4). The structures of new compounds were elucidated by extensive analyses of their spectroscopic data and by comparison with the reported data of known related ones. All compounds exhibited weak inhibitory effect against bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4), a promising therapeutic target in various human diseases, at a concentration of 10 μM.

New Techniques of Structure Elucidation for Sesquiterpenes

The most significant new techniques that have been used in the twenty-first century for the structure elucidation of sesquiterpenes and some derivatives are reviewed in this chapter. A distinctive feature of these methodologies is the combination of accurate experimental measurements with theoretical data obtained by molecular modeling calculations that allow to visualize, understand, and quantify many structural characteristics. This has been the case for NMR spectroscopy, which has expanded its potential for solving complex structural problems by means of comparison with quantum mechanical molecular models. Ab initio and density functional theory calculations of chemical shifts, coupling constants, and residual chemical shift anisotropies have played important roles in the solution of many structures of sesquiterpenes. The assignments of their absolute configurations by evaluation of calculated and experimental chiroptical properties as electronic and vibrational circular dichroism are also reviewed. This chapter also includes the use of X-ray diffraction analysis with emphasis on calculations of the Flack and Hooft parameters, which are applicable to all molecules that crystallize in non-centrosymmetric space groups. The accurate molecular models of sesquiterpenes, validated by concordance with their experimental properties, are nowadays essential for the interpretation of the effects of these natural products on biological systems.

Uncommon Diterpenoids from the South China Sea Soft Coral Sinularia humilis and Their Stereochemistry

The chemical investigation of the South China Sea soft coral Sinularia humilis has resulted in the isolation of a library of diverse diterpenoids, including four new cembranoids, namely, humilisins A-D (1-4), two new uncommon diterpenoids possessing a tetradecahydrocyclopenta[3',4']cyclobuta[1',2':4,5]cyclonona[1,2-b]oxirene ring system, namely, humilisins E and F (5 and 6), and eight known related compounds (7-14). Humilisin A (1) is the first cembranoid with an ether linkage between C-3 and C-7. The structures and absolute configurations of 1-8 were determined by extensive spectroscopic data analyses, chemical reactions, and a series of quantum chemical calculations including quantum mechanical-nuclear magnetic resonance (QM-NMR), time-dependent density functional theory-electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD), and optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) methods. In bioassay, compound 6 displayed anti-inflammatory activity in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglia cells.

Marine natural products

This review covers the literature published in 2019 for marine natural products (MNPs), with 719 citations (701 for the period January to December 2019) referring to compounds isolated from marine microorganisms and phytoplankton, green, brown and red algae, sponges, cnidarians, bryozoans, molluscs, tunicates, echinoderms, mangroves and other intertidal plants and microorganisms. The emphasis is on new compounds (1490 in 440 papers for 2019), together with the relevant biological activities, source organisms and country of origin. Pertinent reviews, biosynthetic studies, first syntheses, and syntheses that led to the revision of structures or stereochemistries, have been included. Methods used to study marine fungi and their chemical diversity have also been discussed.

Lemnardosinanes A-I: New Bioactive Sesquiterpenoids from Soft Coral Lemnalia sp

Two rearranged nardosinane sesquiterpenoids with novel carbon skeletons, lemnardosinanes A (1) and B (2), and seven new nardosinane-related sesquiterpeniod lemnardosinanes C-I (3-9), together with a known compound 6,7-seco-13-nornardosinan (10), were isolated from the soft coral Lemnalia sp. collected from Xisha Islands of the South China Sea. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, Mosher's method, Mo₂(OAc)₄-induced circular dichroism experiment, and quantum chemical calculations. Plausible biosynthetic pathways of 1-10 were proposed. Compounds 1 and 10 displayed in vivo angiogenesis promoting activity in a zebrafish model. Compounds 3 and 4 exhibited antiviral activity against the H1N1 virus with IC₅₀ values of 10.9 and 41.5 μM, respectively.

Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Green Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles of the Soft Coral Nephthea Sp. Supported by Metabolomics Analysis and Docking Studies

Background

Soft corals have been endorsed as a plentiful source of bioactive compounds with promising anti-inflammatory activities; therefore, exploring their potential as source of anti-inflammatory metabolites has stimulated a growing research interest.

Purpose

To investigate the anti-inflammatory potential of the soft coral, Nephthea sp., in its bulk and silver nanostructure. Metabolomics analysis of Nephthea sp., followed by molecular docking studies, was also conducted in order to explore and predict the secondary metabolites that might provide its inhibitory actions on inflammation.

Materials and Methods

The petroleum ether and ethyl acetate fractions were used to synthesize silver nanoparticles. The prepared silver nanoparticles were characterized through UV-vis spectrophotometric, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. Testing for the anti-inflammatory activity was performed against COX-1 and COX-2. Furthermore, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) based metabolomics analysis and molecular docking were also applied.

Results

A variety of secondary metabolites were identified, among them, sesquiterpenes were found to prevail. The petroleum ether and acetone fractions of Nephthea sp. showed the highest COX-2 inhibitory activities, possibly attributable to their substantial contents of terpenoids. Additionally, the green synthesized silver nanoparticles of both the petroleum ether and ethyl acetate fractions of Nephthea sp. demonstrated higher anti-COX-2 properties.

Conclusion

The obtained results showed the effectiveness of non-targeted metabolomics technique in metabolic profiling of Nephthea sp., helping the search for new bioactive metabolites in future chemical studies on this soft coral. The interesting anti-inflammatory potential of the tested extracts and their nanoparticles could also be relevant to the development of new, effective anti-inflammatory agents.

Clavukoellians G-K, New Nardosinane and Aristolane Sesquiterpenoids with Angiogenesis Promoting Activity from the Marine Soft Coral Lemnalia sp

The chemical examination of the marine soft coral Lemnalia sp., collected at the Xisha islands in the South China Sea, resulted in the isolation of four new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids, namely clavukoellians G-J (1-4), and one new aristolane sesquiterpene, namely clavukoellian K (5), together with five known compounds, 6-10. The structure elucidation of the isolated natural products was based on various spectroscopic techniques including HRESIMS and NMR, while their absolute configurations were resolved on the basis of comparisons of the ECD spectra with the calculated ECD data. The isolated new compounds 1-5 were evaluated for their anti- and pro- angiogenesis activities in a transgenic fluorescent zebrafish (Tg(vegfr2:GFP)) model. Quantitative analysis revealed that compound 5 displayed pro-angiogenesis activity in a PTK787-induced vascular injury zebrafish model at 2.5 μM. Data showed that compound 5 significantly promoted the angiogenesis in a dose-dependent manner.

Uncommon nornardosinane, seconeolemnane and related sesquiterpenoids from Xisha soft coral Litophyton nigrum

Three new nardosinane-type sesquiterpenoids linardosinenes A-C (1-3) and four new neolemnane-type sesquiterpenoids lineolemnenes A-D (4-7), together with the related known compound 4-acetoxy-2,8-neolemnadien-5-one (8), were isolated from the Xisha soft coral Litophyton nigrum. The structures of these new compounds were elucidated by comprehensive analyses of spectroscopic data, in association withmodified Mosher's method and ECD calculations for configurational assignments and the absolute configuration of8was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis for the first time. Structurally uncommon nornardosinane and seconeolemnane skeletons for compounds 1 and 7, respectively, are rare carbon frameworks in naturally occurring sesquiterpenoids. The absolute configurations of 1, 7, and 8 were determined by modified Mosher's method, TDDFT ECD approach, and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. This is the first chemical study of L. nigrum and the first report of nornardosinane, seconeolemnane and related sesquiterpenoids from the genus Litophyton. The isolates 1-7 were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against THP-1, SNU-398, HT-29, Capan-1 and A549 cell lines and inhibitory activities against PTP1B, BRD4, HDAC1 and HDAC6 protein kinases. The results indicated that compounds 2-5 inhibited proliferation of human cancer cells. However, none of them were potent inhibitors of protein kinases.

Stereochemical Elucidation of Natural Products from Residual Chemical Shift Anisotropies in a Liquid Crystalline Phase

Determination of the stereochemistry of organic molecules still represents one of the major obstacles in the structure elucidation procedure in drug discovery. Although the application of residual dipolar couplings (RDCs) has revolutionized this field, residual chemical shift anisotropies (RCSAs) which contain valuable structural information for nonprotonated carbons have only been scarcely employed so far. In this study, we present a simple but highly effective solution to extract RCSAs of the analytes in a liquid crystalline phase formed by AAKLVFF oligopeptides. This method does not require any special instruments, devices, or correction during postacquisition data analysis and thus can be easily applied in any chemistry laboratory. To illustrate the potential of this method, the relative configurations of four known natural products (1-4) belonging to different structural classes were confirmed. Moreover, we unambiguously elucidated the stereochemistry of spiroepicoccin A (5), a rare thiodiketopiperazine marine natural product whose configuration could not be assigned based on conventional NMR methods.

Polycyclic furanobutenolide-derived norditerpenoids from the South China Sea soft corals Sinularia scabra and Sinularia polydactyla with immunosuppressive activity

One new polycyclic furanobutenolide-derived norcembranoid, xiguscabrolide H (1), together with eleven known related norditerpenoids 2-12 were isolated from South China Sea soft corals Sinularia scabra and S. polydactyla, respectively. Among them, compounds 1, 6, 8, and 12 were discovered from the former species, while compounds 2-5, 7, and 9-11 were obtained from the latter species. The structure of new compound 1 was elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis and by the comparison with the reported data. With the assistance of time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT-ECD) calculations, its absolute configuration was determined. Moreover, the absolute stereostructures of the known compounds 3, 4, and 9-12, of which only relative configurations were assigned, were established for the first time by X-Ray diffraction analysis and TDDFT-ECD calculations, respectively. In bioassay, several isolates exhibited potent inhibitory effects on the ConA-induced T lymphocytes and/or LPS-induced B lymphocytes proliferation.

New cytotoxic ergostane-type sterols from the Chinese soft coral Sinularia sp

Two new highly oxygenated ergostane-type sterols (1, 2) together with one known related compound sinugrandisterol A (3) were isolated from the soft coral Sinularia sp. collected from the water area near the Xisha Islands, South China Sea. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis, chemical transformations, and by comparison with those reported in literature. In bioassays, compounds 1 and 2 showed in vitro antiproliferative activity against a panel of cancer cell lines, including MDA-MB-436, A549, Hep3B, HT-29 and H157. Morphological observation and Hoechst 33,258 staining assays showed that compound 1-treated H157 cells displayed apoptosis characteristics. Moreover, western blot assays suggested that 1 could increase the expression of Bax and down-regulate expression of Bcl-2.

Four intricately caged polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols from Garcinia multiflora fruits

Garmultinones A–C (1–3), three polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs) with a unique caged tricyclo[3.3.1.1.^4,8]decane skeleton, and one PPAP garmultinone D (4) with the tricyclo[4.3.1.0^3,7]decane skeleton bearing the 2,2-dimethyl-3-isopropenylcyclopentyl ring were isolated from the fruits of Garcinia multiflora.
