Abstract
A strategy for Co(III)-catalyzed C(sp2)-H alkenylation of N-protected isoquinolones with 1,4-naphthoquinones has been disclosed. The developed protocol was efficiently applied for diversely substituted isoquinolones. Preliminary mechanistic experiments revealed the involvement of a five-membered cobaltacycle as an intermediate. Deuterium labeling experiments suggested the reversible nature of the C-H activation step. The scale-up reaction was also carried out, and the product was utilized as a chemosensor to detect Fe3+ ions.

Abstract
Reactions allowing chemodivergence prove to be attractive strategies in synthetic organic chemistry. We herein described a highly practical, transition-metal-free, highly regioselective and chemodivergent cascade reaction controlled by fluorine sources, which involved a [3 + 2] cycloaddition or C-arylation process between aryne precursors and 3-aminomaleimides. These two pathways led to a wide scope of structurally diverse pyrrolo[3,4-b]indoles (19 examples) and 3-arylated maleimides (25 examples) in good-to-excellent yields. Furthermore, the reaction could be scaled up, and several synthetic transformations were accomplished for the preparation of functionalized molecules and might provide new opportunities for the discovery of N-heterocyclic drugs.

Abstract
Herein, a concise Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H alkylation of 8-methylquinolines with oxabenzonorbornadiene scaffolds and other strained olefins has been disclosed. The retention of the oxabenzonorbornadiene skeleton, broad substrate scope, and wide-ranging functional group tolerance are the key features of the developed catalytic methodology. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction does not involve a radical pathway, and the five-membered rhodacycle is the key intermediate. This is the first report on the C(sp3)-H alkylation of 8-methylquinolines with strained oxabenzonorbornadiene scaffolds (with ring retention).

Abstract
Over the past decades, reactions involving C-H functionalization have become a hot theme in organic transformations because they have a lot of potential for the streamlined synthesis of complex molecules. C(sp3)-H bonds are present in most organic species. Since organic molecules have massive significance in various aspects of life, the exploitation and functionalization of C(sp3)-H bonds hold enormous importance. In recent years, the first-row transition metal-catalyzed direct and selective functionalization of C-H bonds has emerged as a simple and environmentally friendly synthetic method due to its low cost, unique reactivity profiles and easy availability. Therefore, research advancements are being made to conceive catalytic systems that foster direct C(sp3)-H functionalization under benign reaction conditions. Cobalt-based catalysts offer mild and convenient reaction conditions at a reasonable expense compared to conventional 2nd and 3rd-row transition metal catalysts. Consequently, the probing of Co-based catalysts for C(sp3)-H functionalization is one of the hot topics from the outlook of an organic chemist. This review primarily focuses on the literature from 2018 to 2022 and sheds light on the substrate scope, selectivity, benefits and limitations of cobalt catalysts for organic transformations.

Abstract
Trivalent group-9 metal catalysts with a cyclopentadienyl-type ligand (CpMIII ; M=Co, Rh, Ir, Cp=cyclopentadienyl) have been widely used for directed C-H functionalizations, albeit that their application to challenging C(sp3 )-H functionalizations suffers from the limitations of the available directing groups. In this report, we describe directed C(sp3 )-H amidation reactions of simple amide substrates with a variety of substituents. The combination of an electron-deficient CpE Rh catalyst (CpE =1,3-bis(ethoxycarbonyl)-substituted Cp) and an electron-deficient 2-pyridone ligand is essential for high reactivity.

Abstract
Herein we report Cp*Co(III)-catalyzed site-selective (C8)-H olefination and oxyarylation of quinoline N-oxides with terminal alkynes. The selectivity for C8-olefination and oxyarylation is sterically and electronically controlled. In the case of quinoline N-oxides (unsubstituted at the C2 position), only the olefination product was obtained irrespective of the nature of the alkynes. In contrast, oxyarylation was observed exclusively when 2-substituted quinoline N-oxides were reacted with 9-ethynylphenanthrene. However, alkynes with electron-withdrawing groups provided only olefination products with 2-substituted quinoline N-oxides. The developed strategy allowed a facile functionalization of quinoline N-oxides bearing natural molecules and an estrone-derived terminal alkyne to deliver the corresponding olefinated and oxyarylated products. To understand the reaction mechanism, control experiments, deuterium-labeling experiments, and kinetic isotope effect (KIE) studies were performed.

Abstract
An efficient Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H selective iodination of 8-methylquinolines is reported herein for the first time. Because of the versatility of organic iodides, the method offers a facile access to various C8-substituted quinolines. By slightly switching the reaction conditions, an efficient C(sp3)-H acetoxylation of 8-methylquinolines has also been enabled. Both approaches feature mild reaction conditions, good tolerance of functional groups, and a broad substrate scope.

Abstract
Transition-metal-catalyzed, coordination-assisted C(sp3)-H functionalization has revolutionized synthetic planning over the past few decades as the use of these directing groups has allowed for increased access to many strategic positions in organic molecules. Nonetheless, several challenges remain preeminent, such as the requirement for high temperatures, the difficulty in removing or converting directing groups, and, although many metals provide some reactivity, the difficulty in employing metals outside of palladium. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview of coordination-assisted, transition-metal-catalyzed, direct functionalization of nonactivated C(sp3)-H bonds by covering the literature since 2004 in order to demonstrate the current state-of-the-art methods as well as the current limitations. For clarity, this review has been divided into nine sections by the transition metal catalyst with subdivisions by the type of bond formation. Synthetic applications and reaction mechanism are discussed where appropriate.

Abstract
Direct functionalization of heterocycles using C-H activation widely relies on the precious metal complexes. In past decade, the use of earth abundant and inexpensive transition metal to functionalize heterocycles has become an attractive alternate strategy. This concept is also interesting due to the unique reactivity pattern of these inexpensive metals. In this context we and other research groups have utilized the high-valent cobalt complexes as an inexpensive and readily available catalyst for the functionalization of heterocycles. In this review, we intend to brief recent progress made in the area of high-valent cobalt complexes catalyzed C-H functionalization of N-containing heterocycles.

Abstract
An efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed straightforward strategy is developed for the synthesis of quinoline braced cyclophane macrocycles via methyl (sp3) C-H functionalization. The method is mild, simple and regioselective with various ring sizes and has good functional group tolerance. The method proceeds via C8-methyl metalation, metal-carbene formation and a subsequent migratory insertion. High dilution is not necessary for this macrocyclization and the only byproduct is nitrogen. A preliminary investigation shows that the C-H metalation step is the rate-determining step.

Abstract
Over the last decade, high-valent cobalt catalysis has earned a place in the spotlight as a valuable tool for C-H activation and functionalization. Since the discovery of its unique reactivity, more and more attention has been directed towards the utilization of cobalt as an alternative to noble metal catalysts. In particular, Cp*Co(III) complexes, as well as simple Co(II) and Co(III) salts in combination with bidentate chelation assistance, have been extensively used for the development of novel transformations. In this review, we have demonstrated the existing trends in the C-H functionalization methodology using high-valent cobalt catalysis and highlighted the main challenges to overcome, as well as perspective directions, which need to be further developed in the future.

Abstract
Herein, we disclose the Rh(III)-catalyzed selective C8-alkylation of quinoline N-oxides with maleimides and acrylates. The main features of the reaction include complete C8-selectivity and broad substrate scope with good to excellent yields. The reaction also proceeded well with unprotected maleimide. The applicability of the developed methodology is demonstrated with gram-scale synthesis and post-modification of the alkylated product. Preliminary mechanistic study revealed that the reaction proceeds through a five-membered rhodacycle and involves proto-demetalation step.

Abstract
The enantioselective C-H alkylation of 8-ethylquinolines with enones or acrolein using a RhIII catalyst and a chiral carboxylic acid is described. Under mild reaction conditions, a binaphthyl-based chiral carboxylic acid enables the enantioselective cleavage of the 8-ethylquinoline C(sp3)-H bond. The obtained results demonstrate the utility of the combination of a high-valent group 9 metal catalyst and a chiral carboxylic acid for the enantioselective C(sp3)-H activation and the subsequent C-C bond formation.

Abstract
A mild and efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed aliphatic C-H acetoxylation directed by quinolines has been developed with widespread functional groups, including various halogens, which usually can provide precursors for further organic synthesis but easily results in selectivity issues in the Pd- and Ni-catalyzed reaction. Interestingly, Ac2O plays an essential role in promoting the transformation.

Abstract
Heterocycles are a ubiquitous substructure in organic small molecules designed for use in materials and medicines. Recent work in catalysis has focused on enabling access to new heterocycle structures by sp3 C-H functionalization on alkyl side-chain substituents-especially at the heterobenzylic position-with more than two hundred manuscripts published just within the last ten years. Rather than describing in detail each of these reports, in this mini-review we attempt to highlight gaps in existing techniques. A semi-quantitative overview of ongoing work strongly suggests that several specific heterocycle types and bond formations outside of C-C, C-N, and C-O have been almost completely overlooked.

Abstract
An efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of uniquely substituted pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and pyrido[1,2-b]indazole derivatives, which involves acetic acid and molecular oxygen promoted cross-dehydrogenative coupling reactions of respective β-ketoesters and β-diketones (like ethyl acetoacetate, ethyl benzoylacetate, methyl propionylacetate, acetylacetone, dimedone, 1,3-cyclohexanedione, and 1,3-cyclopentanedione) with N-amino-2-iminopyridines. The proposed tentative mechanism involves formal acetic acid-promoted oxidative C(sp3)-C(sp2) dehydrogenative coupling followed by dehydrative cyclization under a catalyst-free condition within high atom economy processes.

Abstract
A novel, metal catalyst-free, and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of (pyrazol-4-ylidene)pyridine derivatives. The process involves dehydrogenative coupling of 1-amino-2-imino-pyridines with 1-aryl-5-pyrazolone derivatives utilizing O2 as the sole oxidant. The new method benefits from a high atom economy, efficiency, and substrate scope, as well as the simplicity of reaction and product purification procedures.
