Abstract
Sustainable and highly economical iron-catalyzed chemoselective reduction of C═C of α,β-unsaturated ketones has been established under mild reaction protocols. Water is used as a green and abundant surrogate of hydrogen and is scarcely used in organic synthetic transformations as a source of hydrogen. The developed protocol offers a broad spectrum for chemoselective transfer hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated ketones. Moreover, the method was found to be highly effective for aryl and ferrocenyl α,β-unsaturated ketones consisting of one or two double bonds and with multiple functionalities. Moreover, the present method avoids prolonged reaction time, provides a wide range of substrates with excellent yield, and circumvents the tedious chromatographic workup.

Abstract
We report the first total synthesis of hypersampsone M, an archetypal member of the homoadamantane polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinols (PPAPs). Commencing from cyclohexenone, a key cyclopentene annulation followed by ring-expansion results in an elusive hydrazulene that undergoes a series of unexpected late-stage transformations, ultimately enabling completion of the synthesis. The route detailed herein represents a potentially general strategy for the synthesis of related homoadamantane PPAPs.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry of an amine-rich CpN3 ligand has been explored with cobalt. We demonstrate that in the presence of NaCo(CO)4, the cationic precursor [CpN3]+ yields the complex CpN3CoI(CO)2. While 2e- oxidation generates new CoIII complexes such as [CpN3Co(NCMe)3]2+ and CpN3CoI2(CO), subsequent ligand loss is facile, generating free [CpN3]+ or the protonated dication [CpN3H]2+. We have structurally characterized both these ligand release products via single crystal X-ray diffraction and obtained thermochemical C-H bond strengths via experiment and density functional theory (DFT). Upon reversible 1e- reduction, the radical cation [CpN3H]˙+ has a weak C-H BDFE of 52 kcal mol-1 in acetonitrile. Mechanistic analysis shows that [CpN3H]˙+ undergoes radical-radical disproportionation in the absence of exogenous H-atom acceptors, which is supported by deuterium isotope labelling experiments. Structural comparison of these organic molecules shows a high degree of iminium-like electron delocalization over the C-N bonds connected to the central five-membered ring.

Abstract
(Cyclopentadienone)iron carbonyl compounds are catalytically active in carbonyl/imine reductions, alcohol oxidations, and borrowing hydrogen reactions, but the effect of cyclopentadienone electronics on their activity is not well established. A series of (tetraarylcyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl compounds with varied electron densities on the cyclopentadienone were prepared, and their activities in transfer hydrogenations and dehydrogenations were explored. Additionally, mechanistic studies, including kinetic isotope effect experiments and modifications to substrate electronics, were undertaken to gain insights into catalyst resting states and turnover-limiting steps of these reactions. As the cyclopentadienone electron density increased, both the transfer hydrogenation and dehydrogenation rates increased. A catalytically relevant, trimethylamine-ligated iron compound was isolated and characterized and was observed in solution under both transfer hydrogenation and dehydrogenation conditions. Importantly, it was catalytically active in both reactions. Kinetic isotope effect data and initial rates in transfer hydrogenation reactions with 4'-substituted acetophenones provided evidence that hydrogen transfer from the catalyst to the carbonyl substrate occurred during the turnover-limiting step, and NMR spectroscopy supports the trimethylamine adduct as an off-cycle resting state and the (hydroxycyclopentadienyl)iron hydride as an on-cycle resting state. In transfer dehydrogenations of alcohols, the use of electronically modified benzylic alcohols provided evidence that the turnover-limiting step involves the transfer of hydrogen from the alcohol substrate to the catalyst. The trimethylamine-ligated compound was proposed as the primary catalyst resting state in dehydrogenations.

Abstract
The multitarget therapeutic strategy, as opposed to the more traditional 'one disease-one target-one drug', may hold promise in treating multifactorial neurodegenerative syndromes, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias. Recently, combining a photopharmacology approach with the multitarget-directed ligand (MTDL) design strategy, we disclosed a novel donepezil-like compound, namely 2-(4-((diethylamino)methyl)benzylidene)-5-methoxy-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one (1a), which in the E isomeric form (and about tenfold less in the UV-B photo-induced isomer Z) showed the best activity as dual inhibitor of the AD-related targets acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). Herein, we investigated further photoisomerizable 2-benzylideneindan-1-one analogs 1b-h with the unconjugated tertiary amino moiety bearing alkyls of different bulkiness and lipophilicity. For each compound, the thermal stable E geometric isomer, along with the E/Z mixture as produced by UV-B light irradiation in the photostationary state (PSS, 75% Z), was investigated for the inhibition of human ChEs and MAOs. The pure E-isomer of the N-benzyl(ethyl)amino analog 1h achieved low nanomolar AChE and high nanomolar MAO-B inhibition potencies (IC50s 39 and 355 nM, respectively), whereas photoisomerization to the Z isomer (75% Z in the PSS mixture) resulted in a decrease (about 30%) of AChE inhibitory potency, and not in the MAO-B one. Molecular docking studies were performed to rationalize the different E/Z selectivity of 1h toward the two target enzymes.

Abstract
We report a one-step procedure to selectively reduce secondary and tert-amides to their corresponding amine derivatives in the presence of an ester. This was achieved via the synergistic combination of a photoredox, a nickel catalytic system, and phenyl silane as a reductant in the presence of blue light-emitting diode light (455 nm) at room temperature. Further, this mild light-promoted dual metallaphotoredox catalytic system was also successful in selectively reducing a lactam to the cyclic amines, without affecting the ester moiety present in the molecules.

Abstract
Pd nanospecies supported on porous g-C3N4 nanosheets were prepared for efficient reductive amination reactions. The structures of the catalysts were characterized via FTIR, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and TG analysis, and the mechanisms were investigated using in situ ATR−FTIR spectroscopic analysis complemented by theoretical calculation. It transpired that the valence state of the Pd is not the dominating factor; rather, the hydroxyl group of the Pd(OH)2 cluster is crucial. Thus, by passing protons between different molecules, the hydroxyl group facilitates both the generation of the imine intermediate and the reduction of the C=N unit. As a result, the sterically hindered amines can be obtained at high selectivity (>90%) at room temperature.

Abstract
AbstractThe Diels–Alder reaction of N-benzylcytisine with N-methyl- and N-benzylmaleimides is 100% endo-selective and gives the corresponding syn- and anti-diastereomers in 11–42% isolated yields. The studies of the reaction progress with LCMS and NMR along with detailed quantum chemical calculations revealed that some Diels–Alder adducts are kinetically and their isomers are thermodynamically controlled products. The Pd/C-catalyzed hydrogenation of benzyl-protected cytisine amine derivatives resulted in the removal of the benzyl group and the addition of hydrogen to the C=C double bond to give the corresponding secondary amines in 45–84% yield. The complete reduction of carbonyl groups in a cytisine derivative with LiAlH4 in THF under reflux afforded the respective tricyclic triamine. Quantum mechanical calculations for the mechanism of the Diels–Alder reaction between the simplest model compounds are presented.

Abstract
We present monometallic H2 production electrocatalysts containing electron-rich triamine-cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands coordinated to iron. After selective CO extrusion from the iron tricarbonyl precursors, electrocatalysis is observed via cyclic voltammetry in the presence of an exogenous acid. Contrary to the fact that amines in the secondary coordination sphere are often protonated during electrocatalysis, comprehensive quantum-chemical calculations indicate that the amines likely do not function as proton relays; instead, endo-Cp ring protonation is most favorable after 1e- reduction. This unusual mechanistic pathway emphasizes the need to consider a broad domain of H+/e- addition products by synergistically combining experimental and theoretical resources.

Abstract
(Cyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl complexes are catalytically active, inexpensive, easily accessible and air-stable that are extensively studied as an active pre-catalyst in homogeneous catalysis. Its versatile catalytic activity arises exclusively due to the presence of a non-innocent ligand, which can trigger its unique redox properties effectively. These complexes have been employed widely in (transfer)hydrogenation (e. g., reduction of polar multiple bonds, Oppenauer-type oxidation of alcohols), C-C and C-N bond formation (e. g., reductive aminations, α-alkylation of ketones) and other synthetic transformations. In this review, we discuss the remarkable advancement of its various synthetic applications along with synthesis and mechanistic studies, until February 2021.

Abstract
A novel electrochemical synthesis protocol has been achieved for reductive amination between aldehydes and amines in undivided cells at room temperature. Under metal-free and external-reductant-free electrolysis conditions, various important secondary amine products are obtained in moderate-to-high yields. Deuterium-labeling experiments have demonstrated that low-toxicity DMSO acts both as a solvent and a H-donor in the reaction. On this basis, various deuterium-labeled products with good-to-excellent D-incorporation have been synthesized by using DMSO-d6 as a solvent. Furthermore, a molecule with GR-antagonistic activity has been synthesized through further sulfonylation.

Abstract
The development of efficient and low-cost catalytic systems is important for the replacement of robust noble metal complexes. The synthesis and application of a stable, phosphine-free, water-soluble cyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complex in the reduction of polarized double bonds in pure water is reported. In the presence of cationic bifunctional iron complexes, a variety of alcohols and amines were prepared in good yields under mild reaction conditions.
