Late-Stage Functionalization of (R)-BINOL-Based Diazacoronands and Their Chiral Recognition of α-Phenylethylamine Hydrochlorides

Differentiation of NaCl, NaOH, and β-Phenylethylamine Using Ultraviolet Spectroscopy and Improved Adaptive Artificial Bee Colony Combined with BP-ANN Algorithm

The aim of this study is to enhance the classification performance of the back-propagation-artificial neural network (BP-ANN) algorithm for NaCl, NaOH, β-phenylethylamine (PEA), and their mixture, as well as to avoid the defects of the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm such as prematurity and local optimization. In this paper, a method that combined an improved adaptive artificial bee colony (IAABC) algorithm and BP-ANN algorithm was proposed. This method improved the ABC algorithm by adding an adaptive local search factor and mutation factor; meanwhile, it can enhance the abilities of the global optimization and local search of the ABC algorithm and avoid prematurity. The extracted score vectors of the principal component of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum were used as the input variable of the BP-ANN algorithm. The IAABC algorithm was used to optimize the weight and threshold of the BP-ANN algorithm, and the iterative algorithm was repeated until the output accuracy was reached. The output variable was the classification results of NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture. Meanwhile, the proposed IAABC-BP-ANN algorithm was compared with discriminant analysis (DA), sigmaid-support vector machine (SVM), radial basis function-SVM (RBF-SVM), BP-ANN, and ABC-BP-ANN. Then, the above algorithms were used to classify NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture, respectively. In the experiment, four indicators, accuracy, recall, precision, and F-score, were used as the evaluation criteria. In addition, the regression equation parameters of the mixture for the testing set were obtained by BP-ANN, ABC-BP-ANN, and IAABC-BP-ANN models. All of the results showed that IAABC-BP-ANN exhibits better performance than other algorithms. Therefore, IAABC-BP-ANN combined with UV spectroscopy is a potential identification tool for the detection of NaCl, NaOH, PEA, and the mixture.

Recognition of Chiral Carboxylates by Synthetic Receptors

Recognition of anionic species plays a fundamental role in many essential chemical, biological, and environmental processes. Numerous monographs and review papers on molecular recognition of anions by synthetic receptors reflect the continuing and growing interest in this area of supramolecular chemistry. However, despite the enormous progress made over the last 20 years in the design of these molecules, the design of receptors for chiral anions is much less developed. Chiral recognition is one of the most subtle types of selectivity, and it requires very precise spatial organization of the receptor framework. At the same time, this phenomenon commonly occurs in many processes present in nature, often being their fundamental step. For these reasons, research directed toward understanding the chiral anion recognition phenomenon may lead to the identification of structural patterns that enable increasingly efficient receptor design. In this review, we present the recent progress made in the area of synthetic receptors for biologically relevant chiral carboxylates.

Alkylammonium Cation Affinities of Nitrogenated Organobases: The Roles of Hydrogen Bonding and Proton Transfer

Alkylammonium cation affinities of 64 nitrogen-containing organobases, as well as the respective proton transfer processes from the alkylammonium cations to the base, have been computed in the gas phase by using DFT methods. The guanidine bases show the highest proton transfer values (191.9-233 kJ mol^-1 ) whereas the cis-2,2'-biimidazole presents the largest affinity towards the alkylammonium cations (>200 kJ mol^-1 ) values. The resulting data have been compared with the experimentally reported proton affinities of the studied nitrogen-containing organobases revealing that the propensity of an organobase for the proton transfer process increases linearly with its proton affinity. This work can provide a tool for designing senors for bioactive compounds containing amino groups that are protonated at physiological pH.

Study on the shift of ultraviolet spectra in aqueous solution with variations of the solution concentration

In this study, we mainly focused on predictable regularities of the red shift of ultraviolet spectra for β-phenylethylamine (PEA), NaCl and NaOH in aqueous solution. The absorption peaks of the UV spectra near 191 nm of NaCl, NaOH and PEA in aqueous solution moved in the direction of a red shift while the molar absorption coefficient at the peak increased regularly with the increasing solution concentration. These shifts were obtained for solutions with concentrations ranging from 3.68 to 1000 mmol/L for NaCl, from 0.762 to 2000 mmol/L for NaOH, and from 0.0515 to 8.91 mmol/L for PEA. The plots of the logarithm of the solution concentration for NaCl and PEA versus the absorbance at 191 nm and at the peak were linear, and the plots of the logarithm of the solution concentration for NaCl and PEA versus the wavelength at the peak (shifted from 191 nm) were also linear. In addition, the plots of the logarithm of the solution concentration for NaOH that ranged from 0.762 to 1.96 mmol/L versus the absorbance at 191 nm and at the peak were linear as well as the plots of the logarithm of the solution concentration for NaOH that ranged from 1.96 to 2000 mmol/L versus the wavelength at the peak. The slopes of the absorbance at 191 nm of PEA, NaCl and NaOH were somewhat similar to the absorbance at the peak separately, whereas the slopes of the wavelengths at the peak were different from them. Finally, in order to obtain the predictable regularity of the red shift of the UV spectrum for the mixture, 22 ternary mixtures were prepared. The results indicate that the inhibiting effect of hydroxide ions (OH-) caused the wavelength near 206 nm to remain unchanged when the solution concentration of NaOH in the mixture was more than 0.762 mmol/L.

Static Combinatorial Chemistry: A High-Pressure Approach to the Synthesis of Macrocyclic Benzoamide Libraries

We investigated the yield and distribution of macrocyclic products formed in combinatorial libraries (CLs) obtained via double-amidation reactions of methyl diesters with α,ω-diamines. The application of the static combinatorial chemistry (SCC) approach allowed us to generate a large number of macrocyclic diamides and tetraamides in single experiments. We show that high-pressure conditions accelerate the macrocyclization process but also have a great impact on the distribution of macrocyclic products in the presented libraries, promoting the formation of macrocyclic compounds and eliminating the linear ones. The distribution of macrocyclic products was also found to be strongly dependent on the structural features of the substrates employed. Furthermore, in three- and four-substrate CLs we observed the formation of a new type of hybrid tetraamides consisting of three different components.

Highly Selective Anion Template Effect in the Synthesis of Constrained Pseudopeptidic Macrocyclic Cyclophanes

Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel family of constrained pseudopeptidic macrocyclic compounds containing the hexahydropyrrolo[3,4-f]isoindolocyclophane scaffold and involving four coupled substitution reactions in the macrocyclization process. Although the increase in the number of steps involved in the macrocyclization could lead to a larger number of possible side products, the optimization of the methodology and the study of the driving forces have made it possible to obtain the desired macrocycles in excellent yields. A thorough computational study has been carried out to understand the macrocyclization process, and the results obtained nicely agree with experimental data. Moreover, the bromide anion had a clear catalytic template effect in the macrocyclization reaction, and surprisingly, the chloride anion had a negative template effect in opposition to the results obtained for analogous macrocycles. The parameters responsible for the specific kinetic template effect observed have been studied in detail.

A General Method for High-Pressure-Promoted Postfunctionalization of Unclosed Cryptands: Potential Phase-Transfer Catalysts

We report a high-pressure approach to facile late-stage functionalization of unclosed cryptands (UCs) (11 examples, yield up to 99%). Direct comparison of classic and high-pressure conditions of the quaternization reaction in a sterically crowded intraannular position is investigated, and differences in the reactivity of tertiary amine substrates are discussed. Finally, we demonstrated the application of UCs as catalysts for synthetically important alkylation reactions under phase-transfer conditions.

Oxidation of Sodium Deoxycholate Catalyzed by Gold Nanoparticles and Chiral Recognition Performances of Bile Salt Micelles

Au nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by UV light irradiation of a mixed solution of HAuCl4 and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) under alkaline condition, in which NaDC served as both reducing agent and capping agent. The reaction was monitored by circular dichroism (CD) spectra, and it was found that the formed gold NPs could catalyze the oxidation of NaDC. A CD signal at ~283 nm in the UV region was observed for the oxidation product of NaDC. The intensity of the CD signal of the oxidation product was enhanced gradually with the reaction time. Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were carried out to determine the chemical composition of the oxidation product, revealing that NaDC was selectively oxidized to sodium 3-keto-12-hydroxy-cholanate (3-KHC). The chiral discrimination abilities of the micelles of NaDC and its oxidation product, 3-KHC, were investigated by using chiral model molecules R,S-1,1'-Binaphthyl-2,2'-diyl hydrogenphosphate (R,S-BNDHP). Compared with NaDC, the micelles of 3-KHC displayed higher binding ability to the chiral model molecules. In addition, the difference in binding affinity of 3-KHC micelles towards R,S-isomer was observed, and S-isomer was shown to preferentially bind to the micelles.

Chiral Recognition of Carboxylate Anions by (R)-BINOL-Based Macrocyclic Receptors

Three (R)-BINOL-based macrocyclic receptors obtained via double-amidation reaction were used for chiral recognition of four anions derived from α-hydroxy and α-amino acids. The structural factors of hosts and guests that affect chiral recognition processes were also investigated, indicating that the proper geometry of both receptor and guest molecules plays a crucial role in effective enantio-discrimination.
