Abstract
Direct vicinal difunctionalization of π-systems has emerged as a powerful platform for constructing multiple bonds in a single synthetic operation using simple chemical feedstocks. Over the past decade, there has been exponential growth in the direct construction of successive C-S and C-I bonds using a wide variety of sulfonyl and iodide reactants through 1,2-iodosulfonylation of alkynes in a regio- and stereo-selective manner. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent developments in the preparation of β-iodovinyl sulfones and their practical applications in organic synthesis. The most promising photoredox and electrochemical transformations for synthesizing β-iodovinyl sulfones are also reviewed. The multifunctional β-iodovinyl sulfones have recently been burgeoning as versatile synthetic precursors due to the combination of vinyl iodide and vinyl sulfone moieties, essential building blocks for diverse synthetic manipulations. We hereby present the chemistry of β-iodovinyl sulfones, which can be classified into numerous sections based on the sulfonyl surrogates, and potential synthetic approaches are systematically outlined.

Abstract
The regio- and stereodefined synthesis of trisubstituted alkenes remains a significant synthetic challenge. Herein, a method is developed for producing regio- and stereodefined trisubstituted iodoalkenes by diverting intermediates from an iodination-electrophilic-cyclization mechanism. Specifically, cyclized sulfonium ion-pair intermediates are diverted to alkenes by ring-opening with nucleophilic iodide. Alternatively, scavenging of the iodide by AgOTf prevents ring-opening, enabling isolation of the sulfonium ion-pair intermediate. Isolation of the ion pair enables access to complementary reactivity, including ring-opening by alternative nucleophiles (i.e., amines), yielding trisubstituted acyclic alkenes and an example acyclic tetrasubstituted alkene. X-ray crystallographic determination of reaction intermediates and products confirms that the initial electrophilic-cyclization step sets the stereo- and regiochemistry of the product. The products serve as synthetic building blocks by readily participating in downstream functionalization reactions, including oxidation, palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling, and nucleophilic displacement.

Abstract
A convenient and efficient approach to (E)-2-iodo-3-(methylthio)acrylate has been developed through direct iodothiomethylation of alkynes with aqueous HI and DMSO under mild conditions. This novel protocol has demonstrated a unique difunctionalization of electron-deficient alkynes with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional-group tolerance. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that prior diiodination of alkynes, followed by nucleophilic substitution with in situ generated DMS led to the formation of (E)-2-iodo-3-(methylthio)acrylate.

Transition-metal-catalyzed electrochemical C-H functionalizations have been extensively studied as atom- and step-economical clean methods in organic synthesis. In this account, we described our efforts on the palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C-H functionalizations, including C-H halogenations of arylpyridines and benzamide derivatives using HCl/HBr and I2 as a halogen source, a one-pot process giving teraryls via the palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C-H iodination and subsequent Suzuki-Miyaura coupling, and an iodine-mediated oxidative homo-coupling reaction of arylpyridines.

Abstract
A synergetic copper/photoredox catalyzed ATRA of styrenes and thiosulfonates is developed. Besides aryl ethylenes, the challenging α-substituted styrenes were employed to construct the benzylic quaternary carbon centers. Owing to the mild conditions as well as the high level of substrate compability, this ATRA could be applied to derivatize bioactive natural products in late stage, and to install fluorophores across alkenes. The mechanistic studies reveal sulfonyl radicals as the key intermediate in the transformation.

Abstract
Sulfur-containing scaffold, as a ubiquitous structural motif, has been frequently used in natural products, bioactive chemicals and pharmaceuticals, particularly C-S/N-S bonds are indispensable in many biological important compounds and pharmaceuticals. Development of mild and general methods for C-S/N-S bonds formation has great significance in modern research. Iodine and its derivatives have been recognized as inexpensive, environmentally benign and easy-handled catalysts or reagents to promote the construction of C-S/N-S bonds under mild reaction conditions, with good regioselectivities and broad substrate scope. Especially based on this, several new strategies, such as oxidation relay strategy, have been greatly developed and accelerated the advancement of this field. This review focuses on recent advances in iodine and its derivatives promoted hybridized C-S/N-S bonds formation. The features and mechanisms of corresponding reactions are summarized and the results of some cases are compared with those of previous reports. In addition, the future of this domain is discussed.
