Assessing the Performance of DFT Functionals for Excited-State Properties of Pyridine-Thiophene Oligomers

Azaindolizine proton cranes attached to 7-hydroxyquinoline and 3-hydroxypyridine: a comparative theoretical study

Theoretical design of several proton cranes, based on 7-hydroxyquinoline and 3-hydroxypyridine as proton-transfer frames, has been attempted using ground and excited-state density functional theory (DFT) calculations in various environments. Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine, pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridine and benzimidazole were considered as proton crane units. The proton crane action requires the existence of a single enol-like form in the ground state, which under excitation goes to the end keto-like one through a series of consecutive excited-state intramolecular proton transfers (ESIPT) and twisting steps with the participation of a crane unit, resulting in a long-range intramolecular proton transfer. The results suggest that 3-hydroxypyridine is not suitable for a proton-transfer frame and 8-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)quinolin-7-ol and 8-(pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyridin-2-yl)quinolin-7-ol behave as non-conjugated proton cranes, instead of tautomeric re-arrangement in the latter, which was thought to be possible.

Theoretical Understanding of the Long-Range Proton Transfer Mechanism in 7-Hydroxy Quinoline-Based Molecular Switches: Varma's Proton Crane and Its Analogues

Herein, the detailed mechanism of intramolecular proton transfer in molecular switches, constructed from 7-hydroxy quinoline substituted in the eight-position C-C single axle, connected to three different proton cranes (morpholine, piperidine, and 1,3,5-dioxazine), was investigated by means of theoretical chemistry. The theoretical interpretation of the rotational mechanism and its stable structures were proposed for the well-known Varma's proton crane, based on morpholine molecule. The reliability of the theoretical simulations was confirmed by the available literature data from time-dependent IR measurements.

Chemical Tailoring Assisted non-TADF to TADF Switching in Carbazole-Benzophenone Emitter - An In-silico Investigation

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have become one of the most popular lighting technologies since they offer several advantages over conventional devices. In carbazole-benzophenone (CzBP) OLED devices, the polymeric form of the compound is previously reported to be Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF)-active (ΔEST ≈0.12 eV), while the monomer (CzBP) (ΔEST ≈0.39 eV) does not. The present study examines the effect of chemical tailoring on the optical and photophysical properties of CzBP using DFT and TDDFT methods. The introduction of a single -NO2 group or di-substitution (-NO2 , -COOH or -CN) in the selected LUMO region of the reference CzBP monomer significantly reduces ΔEST ≈0.01 eV, projecting these systems as potential TADF-active emitters. Furthermore, the chemical modification of CzBP-LUMO alters the two-step TADF mechanism (T1 →T2 →S1 ) in CzBP (ES₁ >ET2 >ET₁ ) to the Direct Singlet Harvesting (T1 →S1 ) mechanism (ET2 >ES₁ >ET₁ ), which has recently been identified in the fourth-generation OLED materials.

The Best Models of Bodipy's Electronic Excited State: Comparing Predictions from Various DFT Functionals with Measurements from Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy

Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) are pivotal approaches for modeling electronically excited states of molecules. However, choosing a DFT exchange-correlation functional (XCF) among the myriad of alternatives is an overwhelming task that can affect the interpretation of results and lead to erroneous conclusions. The performance of these XCFs to describe the excited-state properties is often addressed by comparing them with high-level wave function methods or experimentally available vertical excitation energies; however, this is a limited analysis that relies on evaluation of a single point in the excited-state potential energy surface (PES). Different strategies have been proposed but are limited by the difficulty of experimentally accessing the electronic excited-state properties. In this work, we have tested the performance of 12 different XCFs and TD-DFT to describe the excited-state potential energy surface of Bodipy (2,6-diethyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyldipyrromethene difluoroborate). We compare those results with resonance Raman spectra collected by using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). By simultaneously fitting the absorption spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and all of the resonance Raman excitation profiles within the independent mode displaced harmonic oscillator (IMDHO) formalism, we can describe the PES at the Franck-Condon (FC) region and determine the solvent and intramolecular reorganization energy after relaxation. This allows a direct comparison of the TD-DFT output with experimental observables. Our analysis reveals that using vertical absorption energies might not be a good criterion to determine the best XCF for a given molecular system and that FSRS opens up a new way to benchmark the excited-state performance of XCFs of fluorescent dyes.

Conformational Effect on the Excitonic States of 2-Phenylpyridine Oligomers: Ab Initio Studies and Analysis

In this work, we report the effect of different conformations of 2-phenylpyridine oligomers ((PhPy)n=1-5) on the excited state properties from the results obtained at the RI-ADC(2)/def2-TZVP level. Three different conformers, namely, A, B, and C, are considered for each oligomer. All the oligomers of conformer A have linear-type structures, whereas conformers B and C form helical structures at n = 5 and n = 3, respectively. The differences in the geometries of the three conformers are reflected in the UV and CD spectra. The UV spectra of conformer A show high-intensity peaks compared to the conformers B and C, for each oligomer. While the helical oligomers of conformers B and C show high-intensity CD bands, the intensities of CD bands for all of the oligomers of conformer A are weaker. Analysis of the properties of the first five excited states in (PhPy)5 is carried out using three descriptors, and the results reveal that these are partially charge transfer states.

Overlooked Transformation of Nitrated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Natural Waters: Role of Self-Photosensitization

Photochemical transformation is an important process that involves trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in sunlit surface waters. However, the environmental implications of their self-photosensitization pathway have been largely overlooked. Here, we selected 1-nitronaphthalene (1NN), a representative nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, to study the self-photosensitization process. We investigated the excited-state properties and relaxation kinetics of 1NN after sunlight absorption. The intrinsic decay rate constants of triplet (³1NN*) and singlet (¹1NN*) excited states were estimated to be 1.5 × 10⁶ and 2.5 × 10⁸ s^-1, respectively. Our results provided quantitative evidence for the environmental relevance of ³1NN* in waters. Possible reactions of ³1NN* with various water components were evaluated. With the reduction and oxidation potentials of -0.37 and 1.95 V, ³1NN* can be either oxidized or reduced by dissolved organic matter isolates and surrogates. We also showed that hydroxyl (^•OH) and sulfate (SO₄^•-) radicals can be generated via the ³1NN*-induced oxidation of inorganic ions (OH^- and SO₄^2-, respectively). We further investigated the reaction kinetics of ³1NN* and OH^- forming ^•OH, an important photoinduced reactive intermediate, through complementary experimental and theoretical approaches. The rate constants for the reactions of ³1NN* with OH^- and 1NN with ^•OH were determined to be 4.22 × 10⁷ and 3.95 ± 0.01 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. These findings yield new insights into self-photosensitization as a pathway for TrOC attenuation and provide more mechanistic details into their environmental fate.

Photochemical Synthesis and Electrochemical and Photophysical Properties of 2,7-Diarylbenzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazoles)

This article focuses on the development of practical approaches to the preparation of benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazoles) using blue light-induced photochemical cyclization of N,N'-(1,4-aryl)dithioamides in the presence of p-chloranil as a mild oxidant. The proposed method allows to obtain benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazoles) containing donor substituents in the conjugated chain. Photophysical and (spectro)electrochemical properties of 2,6-di([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-yl)benzo[1,2-d:4,3-d']bis(thiazole) and -benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bis(thiazole) are studied in detail. The properties of the synthesized compounds suggest their potential applications for organic electronics.

Effects of Heterocyclic Ring Fusion and Chain Elongation on Chiroptical Properties of Polyaza[9]helicene: A Computational Study

In the present work, the effect of lateral and helical extensions on the physical and chiroptical properties of azahelicenes is reported. Starting with the experimentally reported polyaza[9]helicene (9Ha), three derivatives, two with laterally fused electron-withdrawing rings and the third with larger helical length, are designed. For the excited-state properties such as UV-vis and CD spectra, performances of different DFT functionals are evaluated by comparing the energies and characters of the excited states against the ADC(2) results. CPL properties are calculated at DFT level. Among the three designed systems, pyrazine-based 9HaP shows an improved g_CPL value compared to that for parent 9Ha. However, quinoxaline-based 9HaQ is found to be the worst CPL emitter with the lowest dissymmetry factor. The helically extended derivative, 11Ha, shows good CPL results, but g_CPL remains smaller than that for the parent system. The CPL results are analyzed in terms of electric dipole transition moment (EDTM) and magnetic dipole transition moment (MDTM) vectors, and angles between these two vectors.

A two-step MM and QM/MM approach to model AIEE of aryloxy benzothiadiazole derivatives for optoelectronic applications

Aryloxy-benzothiadiazole (ArO-Btz) derivatives show aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) in the solid-state and are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. However, understanding the AIEE is a challenging task and is necessary for the rational molecular design of emitters. Therefore, in the present study, electron acceptors (-F, -CN, -NO₂, and -COOH) on the benzothiadiazole ring have been screened for emission in solution and aggregated phases. Herein, we report QM (DFT/TDDFT) and ONIOM (QM/MM) studies on the four ArO-Btz derivatives in comparison with the parent molecule with typical characteristics of AIEE, optoelectronic and non-linear optical properties. Starting from the optimized crystal structure of the parent compound, the structures of the designed clusters have been pre-optimized with MM and then with QM/MM to explore their absorption and emission in the solid phase. The results indicate that in the aggregated phase, the surrounding environment reduces intra-molecular rotations and molecular motion that lead to enhanced emission. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses reveal that the ground state structure is stabilized from electron delocalization and operative push-pull effects. Interestingly, nitro-benzothiadiazole exhibits prominent AIEE phenomena, with an emission wavelength beyond 700 nm in solution and in the cluster, reinforced by the magnification of its oscillatory strength by 100 times when aggregated. This dinitro-aryloxy-benzothiadiazole derivative is proposed as a near-infrared emitter for dye-sensitized solar cell, optoelectronic, and non-linear optical applications.

Modified fullerenes as acceptors in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells - a theoretical study

In the present study, electronic structure calculations were used to provide strategies for designing poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-fullerene-derivative-based donor-acceptor materials for use in high-efficiency bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ OSCs). The work systematically analyses the impact of electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents on the opto-electronic properties of the fullerene structures. Parameters relating to the absorption spectra, orbital distributions, and energy ordering of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), the interactions between P3HT and the fullerene derivatives, and charge transfer across the interface were investigated. We found that substitution with the electron-withdrawing group NO₂ enhances the electronic coupling between the fullerene and P3HT; however, it reduces the open-circuit voltage (V_OC) of the OSC through lowering the LUMO energy level. Furthermore, the results show that substitution with an electron-withdrawing group (NO₂) and electron-donating group (OCH₃) can improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the OSC, since this slightly improves the photon absorption abilities and charge transfer coupling at the interface without overly compromising V_OC relative to PC₆₁BM. Our study shows that alkyl chain modification in the PC₆₁BM acceptor is a promising strategy for improving the performances of OSCs.

Unexpected benzene oxidation in collisions with superoxide anions

Superoxide anions colliding with benzene molecules at impact energies from 200 to 900 eV are reported for the first time to form massive complexes. With the aid of quantum chemistry calculations, we propose a mechanism in which a sudden double ionization of benzene and the subsequent electrostatic attraction between the dication and the anion form a stable covalently bonded C6H6O2+ molecule, that evolves towards the formation of benzene-diol conformers. These findings lend support to a model presenting a new high energy anion-driven chemistry as an alternative way to form complex molecules.
