Fast-forward scaling theory

Speed is the key to further advances in technology. For example, quantum technologies, such as quantum computing, require fast manipulations of quantum systems in order to overcome the effect of decoherence. However, controlling the speed of quantum dynamics is often very difficult due to both the lack of a simple scaling property in the dynamics and the infinitely large parameter space to be explored. Therefore, protocols for speed control based on understanding of the dynamical properties of the system, such as non-trivial scaling property, are highly desirable. Fast-forward scaling theory (FFST) was originally developed to provide a way to accelerate, decelerate, stop and reverse the dynamics of quantum systems. FFST has been extended in order to accelerate quantum and classical adiabatic dynamics of various systems including cold atoms, internal state of molecules, spins and solid-state artificial atoms. This paper describes the basic concept of FFST and reviews the recent developments and its applications such as fast state-preparations, state protection and ion sorting. We introduce a method, called inter-trajectory travel, recently derived from FFST. We also point out the significance of deceleration in quantum technology. Optimal shortcuts of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in the presence of dissipation

We use optimal control theory to obtain shortcuts to adiabaticity which maximize population transfer in a three-level stimulated Raman adiabatic passage system, for a given finite duration of the process and a specified dissipation rate at the intermediate state. We fix the sum of the intensities of the pump and Stokes pulses and use the mixing angle of the fields as the sole control variable. We determine the optimal variation of this angle and reveal the role of the singular arc in the optimal trajectory, in order to minimize the effect of dissipation. Robust quantum state transfer by optimal invariant-based reverse engineering

Shortening the operation time of implementing scheme and reducing the influence of harmful factors have always been the research objectives pursued by people. Based on invariant-based reverse engineering, we present a general scheme for implementing robust population transfer in a three-level system via optimal shortcut to adiabatic passage. The systematic error sensitivity is introduced to measure the robustness of the process. The smooth Rabi frequencies are expressed with some coefficients, which are also related to the systematic error sensitivity and the population of intermediate state. When the amplitude of control field is given, the transfer can be optimized within as small systematic error sensitivity as possible, i.e., the robustness against systematic errors is further improved by choosing suitable correlation coefficient. Additionally, we apply the technique to achieve robust excitation fluctuation transfer between two membranes in an optomechanical system. The relation between the fidelity of excitation fluctuation transfer and variation of effective optomechanical coupling strengths is analysed. Numerical result shows that the fidelity keeps over 0.95 even if the coupling strengths deviates from 20% of the theoretical value. Moreover, comparison with existing literature [Opt. Express29, 7998 (2021)10.1364/OE.417343], the proposed scheme possesses stronger robustness against variations of effective optomechanical coupling strengths and lower population of unwanted states. The idea may provide a promising approach for quantum information processing.

Shortcuts to Thermodynamic Quasistaticity

The operation of near-term quantum technologies requires the development of feasible, implementable, and robust strategies of controlling complex many body systems. To this end, a variety of techniques, so-called "shortcuts to adiabaticity," have been developed. Many of these shortcuts have already been demonstrated to be powerful and implementable in distinct scenarios. Yet, it is often also desirable to have additional, approximate strategies available that are applicable to a large class of systems. Hence, in this Letter, we take inspiration from thermodynamics and propose to focus on the macrostate, rather than the microstate. Adiabatic dynamics can then be identified as such processes that preserve the equation of state, and systematic corrections are obtained from adiabatic perturbation theory. We demonstrate this approach by improving upon fast quasiadiabatic driving, and by applying the method to the quantum Ising chain in the transverse field.

Environment-Assisted Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Envariance is a symmetry exhibited by correlated quantum systems. Inspired by this "quantum fact of life," we propose a novel method for shortcuts to adiabaticity, which enables the system to evolve through the adiabatic manifold at all times, solely by controlling the environment. As the main results, we construct the unique form of the driving on the environment that enables such dynamics, for a family of composite states of arbitrary dimension. We compare the cost of this environment-assisted technique with that of counterdiabatic driving, and we illustrate our results for a two-qubit model.

Time-Rescaling of Dirac Dynamics: Shortcuts to Adiabaticity in Ion Traps and Weyl Semimetals

Only very recently, rescaling time has been recognized as a way to achieve adiabatic dynamics in fast processes. The advantage of time-rescaling over other shortcuts to adiabaticity is that it does not depend on the eigenspectrum and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. However, time-rescaling requires that the original dynamics are adiabatic, and in the rescaled time frame, the Hamiltonian exhibits non-trivial time-dependence. In this work, we show how time-rescaling can be applied to Dirac dynamics, and we show that all time-dependence can be absorbed into the effective potentials through a judiciously chosen unitary transformation. This is demonstrated for two experimentally relevant scenarios, namely for ion traps and adiabatic creation of Weyl points.

Invariant-Based Inverse Engineering for Fast and Robust Load Transport in a Double Pendulum Bridge Crane

We set a shortcut-to-adiabaticity strategy to design the trolley motion in a double-pendulum bridge crane. The trajectories found guarantee payload transport without residual excitation regardless of the initial conditions within the small oscillations regime. The results are compared with exact dynamics to set the working domain of the approach. The method is free from instabilities due to boundary effects or to resonances with the two natural frequencies.

Robustness of STIRAP Shortcuts under Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Noise in the Energy Levels

In this article, we evaluate the efficiency of two shortcuts to adiabaticity for the STIRAP system, in the presence of Ornstein–Uhlenbeck noise in the energy levels. The shortcuts under consideration preserve the interactions of the original Hamiltonian, without adding extra counterdiabatic terms, which directly connect the initial and target states. The first shortcut is such that the mixing angle is a polynomial function of time, while the second shortcut is derived from Gaussian pulses. Extensive numerical simulations indicate that both shortcuts perform quite well and robustly even in the presence of relatively large noise amplitudes, while their performance is decreased with increasing noise correlation time. For similar pulse amplitudes and durations, the efficiency of classical STIRAP is highly degraded even in the absence of noise. When using pulses with similar areas for the two STIRAP shortcuts, the shortcut derived from Gaussian pulses appears to be more efficient. Since STIRAP is an essential tool for the implementation of emerging quantum technologies, the present work is expected to find application in this broad research field.

Theoretical Study on Spin-Selective Coherent Electron Transfer in a Quantum Dot Array

Recently, we proposed the spin-selective coherent electron transfer in a silicon-quantum-dot array. It requires temporal tuning of two pulses of an oscillating magnetic field and gate voltage control. This paper proposes a simpler method that requires a single pulse of oscillating magnetic field and gate voltage control. We examined the robustness of the control against the error in the pulse amplitude and the effect of the excited states relaxation to the control efficiency. In addition, we propose a novel control method based on a shortcuts-to-adiabaticity protocol, which utilizes two pulses but requires temporal control of the pulse amplitude for only one of them. We compared their efficiencies under the effect of realistic pulse amplitude errors and relaxation.

Fast quantum control in dissipative systems using dissipationless solutions

We report on a systematic geometric procedure, built up on solutions designed in the absence of dissipation, to mitigate the effects of dissipation in the control of open quantum systems. Our method addresses a standard class of open quantum systems that encompasses non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. It provides the analytical expression of the extra magnetic field to be superimposed to the driving field in order to compensate the geometric distortion induced by dissipation for spin systems, and produces an exact geometric optimization of fast population transfer. Interestingly, it also preserves the robustness properties of protocols originally optimized against noise. Its extension to two interacting spins restores a fidelity close to unity for the fast generation of Bell state in the presence of dissipation.

Fast long-range charge transfer in quantum dot arrays

Charge, spin and quantum states transfer in solid state devices is an important issue in quantum information. Adiabatic protocols, such as coherent transfer by adiabatic passage have been proposed for direct charge transfer, also denoted as long-range transfer, between the outer dots in a QD array without occupying the intermediate ones. However adiabatic protocols are prone to decoherence. With the aim of achieving direct charge transfer between the outer dots of a QD array with high fidelity, we propose a protocol to speed up the adiabatic transfer, in order to increase the fidelity of the process. Based on adiabaticity shortcuts, by properly engineering the pulses, fast adiabatic-like direct charge transfer between the outer dots can be obtained. We also discuss the impact of transfer fidelity on the operation time in the presence of dephasing. The proposed protocols for accelerating long-range charge and state transfer in a QD array offer a robust mechanism for quantum information transfer, by minimizing the decoherence and relaxation processes.

Fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity

We propose an effective scheme to implement fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity. Facilitated by the level-transition rule, a Λ-configuration resonant interaction can be realized between microwave drivings and the qutrit with sufficient level anharmonicity, from which we perform the reversible population transfers via invariant-based shortcut. Compared with the detuned drivings, the utilized resonant drivings shorten the transfer times significantly. Further analysis of the dependence of transfer time on Rabi couplings is helpful to experimental investigations. Thanks to the accelerated process, transfer operation is highly insensitive to noise effects. Thus the protocol could provide a promising avenue to experimentally perform fast and robust quantum operations on Josephson artificial atoms.

Fast adiabatic quantum state transfer and entanglement generation between two atoms via dressed states

We propose a dressed-state scheme to achieve shortcuts to adiabaticity in atom-cavity quantum electrodynamics for speeding up adiabatic two-atom quantum state transfer and maximum entanglement generation. Compared with stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, the dressed-state scheme greatly shortens the operation time in a non-adiabatic way. By means of some numerical simulations, we determine the parameters which can guarantee the feasibility and efficiency both in theory and experiment. Besides, numerical simulations also show the scheme is robust against the variations in the parameters, atomic spontaneous emissions and the photon leakages from the cavity.

Trade-Off Between Speed and Cost in Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Achieving effectively adiabatic dynamics is a ubiquitous goal in almost all areas of quantum physics. Here, we study the speed with which a quantum system can be driven when employing transitionless quantum driving. As a main result, we establish a rigorous link between this speed, the quantum speed limit, and the (energetic) cost of implementing such a shortcut to adiabaticity. Interestingly, this link elucidates a trade-off between speed and cost, namely, that instantaneous manipulation is impossible as it requires an infinite cost. These findings are illustrated for two experimentally relevant systems-the parametric oscillator and the Landau-Zener model-which reveal that the spectral gap governs the quantum speed limit as well as the cost for realizing the shortcut.

Fast generation of W states of superconducting qubits with multiple Schrödinger dynamics

In this paper, we present a protocol to generate a W state of three superconducting qubits (SQs) by using multiple Schrödinger dynamics. The three SQs are respective embedded in three different coplanar waveguide resonators (CPWRs), which are coupled to a superconducting coupler (SCC) qubit at the center of the setups. With the multiple Schrödinger dynamics, we build a shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA), which greatly accelerates the evolution of the system. The Rabi frequencies of the laser pulses being designed can be expressed by the superpositions of Gaussian functions via the curves fitting, so that they can be realized easily in experiments. What is more, numerical simulation result shows that the protocol is robust against control parameters variations and decoherence mechanisms, such as the dissipations from the CPWRs and the energy relaxation. In addition, the influences of the dephasing are also resisted on account of the accelerating for the dynamics. Thus, the performance of the protocol is much better than that with the conventional adiabatic passage techniques when the dephasing is taken into account. We hope the protocol could be implemented easily in experiments with current technology.

Efficient shortcuts to adiabatic passage for three-dimensional entanglement generation via transitionless quantum driving

We propose an effective scheme of shortcuts to adiabaticity for generating a three-dimensional entanglement of two atoms trapped in a cavity using the transitionless quantum driving (TQD) approach. The key point of this approach is to construct an effective Hamiltonian that drives the dynamics of a system along instantaneous eigenstates of a reference Hamiltonian to reproduce the same final state as that of an adiabatic process within a much shorter time. In this paper, the shortcuts to adiabatic passage are constructed by introducing two auxiliary excited levels in each atom and applying extra cavity modes and classical fields to drive the relevant transitions. Thereby, the three-dimensional entanglement is obtained with a faster rate than that in the adiabatic passage. Moreover, the influences of atomic spontaneous emission and photon loss on the fidelity are discussed by numerical simulation. The results show that the speed of entanglement implementation is greatly improved by the use of adiabatic shortcuts and that this entanglement implementation is robust against decoherence. This will be beneficial to the preparation of high-dimensional entanglement in experiment and provides the necessary conditions for the application of high-dimensional entangled states in quantum information processing.

Speeding up Adiabatic Quantum State Transfer by Using Dressed States

We develop new pulse schemes to significantly speed up adiabatic state transfer protocols. Our general strategy involves adding corrections to an initial control Hamiltonian that harness nonadiabatic transitions. These corrections define a set of dressed states that the system follows exactly during the state transfer. We apply this approach to stimulated Raman adiabatic passage protocols and show that a suitable choice of dressed states allows one to design fast protocols that do not require additional couplings, while simultaneously minimizing the occupancy of the "intermediate" level.
