Local Mode Approach to OH Stretch Spectra of Benzene–(H2O)n Clusters, n = 2–7

The strength of the OH-bend/OH-stretch Fermi resonance in small water clusters

A novel Raman jet-spectrometer is used to study the Fermi resonance between the OH bending overtone and OH stretching fundamental in small cyclic water clusters (H2O)n with n = 3, 4, 5. The new setup features a recirculating vacuum system which reduces the gas consumption by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude and enables long-term measurements of very weak Raman signals. Raman spectra measured from highly diluted expansions with unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio are presented and cluster-specific intensity ratios and effective coupling constants are derived using Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo methods, yielding a high probability for an almost "perfect" resonance for the tetramer and pentamer, i.e. a close frequency match of bend overtone and stretch fundamental with intensity ratios close to 1, but a larger coupling constant for the trimer, with best estimates close to W5 ≲ 50 cm-1 < W4 ≲ 60 cm-1 < W3 ≈ 65 cm-1.

Microhydration of Tertiary Amines: Robust Resonances in Red-Shifted Water

Tertiary amines are strong hydrogen bond acceptors. When a water molecule donates one of the OH groups, its in-phase stretching vibration wavenumber is decreased to such an extent that it comes close to the water bending overtone. This gives rise to anharmonic phenomena such as classical Fermi resonance, resonance with multiple-quantum dark states, or combination transitions with low-frequency intermolecular modes. These effects, which contribute to the spectral breadth of room-temperature hydrogen-bonded amine complexes, are disentangled by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in pulsed supersonic slit jet expansions. Monohydrates of the amines quinuclidine, N-methylpyrrolidine, N-methylpiperidine, and dimethylcyclohexylamine exhibit systematic mode coupling signatures. These suggest relatively fast energy flow out of the excited OH stretching fundamental into intra- and intermolecular degrees of freedom of the hydrogen-bonded water molecule. Trimeric complexes are spectroscopically separated from the amine monohydrates.

Water Network Shape-Dependence of Local Interactions with the Microhydrated -NO2- and -CO2- Anionic Head Groups by Cold Ion Vibrational Spectroscopy

We report the structural evolutions of water networks and solvatochromic response of the CH₃NO₂^- radical anion in the OH and CH stretching regions by analysis of the vibrational spectra displayed by cryogenically cooled CH₃NO₂^-·(H₂O)_n=1-6 clusters. The OH stretching bands evolve with a surprisingly large discontinuity at n = 6, which features the emergence of an intense, strongly red-shifted band along with a weaker feature that appears in the region assigned to a free OH fundamental. Very similar behavior is displayed by the perdeuterated carboxylate clusters, RCO₂^-·(H₂O)_n=5-7 (R = CD₃CD₂), indicating that this behavior is a general feature in the microhydration of the triatomic anionic domain and not associated with CH oscillators. Electronic structure calculations trace this behavior to the formation of a "book" isomer of the water hexamer that adopts a configuration in which one of the water molecules resides in an acceptor-acceptor-donor (AAD) (A = acceptor, D = donor) H-bonding site. Excitation of the bound OH in the AAD site explores the local network topology best suited to stabilize an incipient -XO₂H-OH^-(H₂O)₂ intracluster proton-transfer reaction. These systems thus provide particularly clear examples where the network shape controls the potential energy landscape that governs water network-mediated, intracluster proton transfer. The CH stretching bands of the CH₃NO₂^-·(H₂O)_n=1-6 clusters also exhibit strong solvatochromic shifts, but in this case, they smoothly blue-shift with increasing hydration with no discontinuity at n = 6. This behavior is analyzed in the context of the solute-ion polarizability response and partial charge transfer to the water networks.

Revisiting the Spectroscopy of Water Dimer in Jets

Laser spectroscopy in jets is one of the main sources of structural data from molecular aggregates. Consequently, numerous and sophisticated experimental systems have been developed to extract precise information, which is usually interpreted in the light of quantum mechanical calculations. However, even with the most sophisticated experiments, it is sometimes difficult to interpret the experimental results. We present here the example of water dimer and how after almost 70 years, the assignment of its mass-resolved IR spectrum still generates controversy that extends toward the mechanism of ionization of water aggregates.

Deconstructing water's diffuse OH stretching vibrational spectrum with cold clusters

The diffuse vibrational envelope displayed by water precludes direct observation of how different hydrogen-bond topologies dictate the spectral response of individual hydroxy group (OH) oscillators. Using cold, isotopically labeled cluster ions, we report the spectral signatures of a single, intact water (H₂O) molecule embedded at various sites in the clathrate-like cage structure adopted by the Cs⁺·(D₂O)₂₀ ion. These patterns reveal the site-dependent correlation between the frequencies of the two OH groups on the same water molecule and establish that the bound OH companion of the free OH group exclusively accounts for bands in the lower-energy region of the spectrum. The observed multiplet structures reveal the homogeneous linewidths of the fundamentals and quantify the anharmonic contributions arising from coupling to both the intramolecular bending and intermolecular soft modes.

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Anharmonic Theory of Protonated Water Clusters: Higher Elevations in the Hydrogen Bonding Landscape

Near-infrared spectroscopy measurements are presented for protonated water clusters, H⁺(H₂O) _n, in the size range of n = 1-8. Clusters are produced in a pulsed-discharge supersonic expansion, mass selected, and studied with infrared laser photodissociation spectroscopy in the regions of 3600-4550 and 4850-7350 cm^-1. Although there is some variation with cluster size, the main features of these spectra are a broad absorption near 5300 cm^-1, a sharp doublet near 7200 cm^-1, as well as a structured absorption near 4100 cm^-1 for n ≥ 2. The vibrational patterns measured for the hydronium, Zundel, and Eigen ions are compared to those predicted by different forms of anharmonic theory. Second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) and a local mode treatment of the OH stretches both capture key aspects of the spectra but suffer understandable deficiencies in the quantitative description of band positions and intensities.

Fermi resonance in solvated H3O+: a counter-intuitive trend confirmed via a joint experimental and theoretical investigation

In this work, we combine both experimental and theoretical approaches to jointly investigate Ne-tagged and Ar-tagged H₃O⁺ (with n = 1, 2, and 3) to gain a better understanding of the Fermi resonance in solvated H₃O⁺.

Capturing the Elusive Water Trimer from the Stepwise Growth of Water on the Surface of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Acenaphthene

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are key players in reaction chemistry. While it is postulated that they serve as a basis for ice grains, there has been no direct detection of PAHs in astronomical environments. We aim to investigate the hydration of PAHs to set a foundation for the future exploration of potential ice formation pathways. We report results from chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations for the PAH acenaphthene and acenaphthene complexed with up to four water molecules. The acenaphthene-(H₂O)₃ complex is of particular interest as the elusive cyclic water trimer was observed. It appears in a slightly distorted configuration when compared with the pure water trimer. This is explained by hydrogen-bond net cooperativity effects. Binding energies for the complexes are presented. Our results provide insight into the onset of complex aggregation that could be occurring in extraterrestrial environments as part of ice grain formation.

Spectroscopic snapshots of the proton-transfer mechanism in water

The Grotthuss mechanism explains the anomalously high proton mobility in water as a sequence of proton transfers along a hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) network. However, the vibrational spectroscopic signatures of this process are masked by the diffuse nature of the key bands in bulk water. Here we report how the much simpler vibrational spectra of cold, composition-selected heavy water clusters, D⁺(D₂O)_n, can be exploited to capture clear markers that encode the collective reaction coordinate along the proton-transfer event. By complexing the solvated hydronium "Eigen" cluster [D₃O⁺(D₂O)₃] with increasingly strong H-bond acceptor molecules (D₂, N₂, CO, and D₂O), we are able to track the frequency of every O-D stretch vibration in the complex as the transferring hydron is incrementally pulled from the central hydronium to a neighboring water molecule.

Perturbation Approach for Computing Infrared Spectra of the Local Mode of Probe Molecules

Linear and two-dimensional infrared (IR) spectroscopy of site-specific probe molecules provides an opportunity to gain a molecular-level understanding of the local hydrogen-bonding network, conformational dynamics, and long-range electrostatic interactions in condensed-phase and biological systems. A challenge in computation is to determine the time-dependent vibrational frequencies that incorporate explicitly both nuclear quantum effects of vibrational motions and an electronic structural representation of the potential energy surface. In this paper, a nuclear quantum vibrational perturbation (QVP) method is described for efficiently determining the instantaneous vibrational frequency of a chromophore in molecular dynamics simulations. Computational efficiency is achieved through the use of (a) discrete variable representation of the vibrational wave functions, (b) a perturbation theory to evaluate the vibrational energy shifts due to solvent dynamic fluctuations, and (c) a combined QM/MM potential for the systems. It was found that first-order perturbation is sufficiently accurate, enabling time-dependent vibrational frequencies to be obtained on the fly in molecular dynamics. The QVP method is illustrated in the mode-specific linear and 2D-IR spectra of the H-Cl stretching frequency in the HCl-water clusters and the carbonyl stretching vibration of acetone in aqueous solution. To further reduce computational cost, a hybrid strategy was proposed, and it was found that the computed vibrational spectral peak position and line shape are in agreement with experimental results. In addition, it was found that anharmonicity is significant in the H-Cl stretching mode, and hydrogen-bonding interactions further enhance anharmonic effects. The present QVP method complements other computational approaches, including path integral-based molecular dynamics, and represents a major improvement over the electrostatics-based spectroscopic mapping procedures.
