High-Resolution Far-Infrared Spectroscopy of N-Substituted Two-Ring Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: An Extended Study

High resolution far-infrared synchrotron spectroscopy of 2-furfural conformers: Fundamental and hot bands

In the continuity of a previous jet-cooled rovibrational study of trans and cis conformers of 2-furfural in the mid-infrared region (700-1750 cm-1) [Chawananon et al., Molecules 28 (10), 4165 (2023)], the present work investigates the far-infrared spectroscopy of 2-furfural using a long path absorption cell coupled to a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer and synchrotron radiation at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron. Guided by anharmonic calculations, vibrational energy levels and excited-state rotational constants are sufficiently predictive for a complete assignment of all fundamental and combination bands up to 700 cm-1, as well as the rovibrational analysis of 4 (1) low-frequency modes of trans-(cis-)2-furfural. A global rovibrational simulation, including far-infrared rovibrational lines and microwave and millimeter-wave rotational lines assigned in a previous study [Motiyenko et al., J. Mol. Spectrosc., 244, 9 (2007)] provides a reliable set of ground- and excited-state rotational parameters involving ring torsion, bending, and ring puckering modes of 2-furfural. In a second step, a rovibrational analysis of several hot band sequences, mainly involving the lowest frequency ring CHO torsion mode, is carried out. Reliable values of some anharmonic coefficients are obtained experimentally and could serve as a benchmark for validating advanced anharmonic calculations related to these large amplitude motions of flexible molecules.

Rovibrational Spectroscopy of Trans and Cis Conformers of 2-Furfural from High-Resolution Fourier Transform and QCL Infrared Measurements

The ortho-isomer 2-furfural (2-FF), which is a primary atmospheric pollutant produced from biomass combustion, is also involved in oxidation processes leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosols. Its contribution to radiative forcing remains poorly understood. Thus, monitoring 2-FF directly in the atmosphere or in atmospheric simulation chambers to characterize its reactivity is merited. The present study reports an extensive jet-cooled rovibrational study of trans and cis conformers of 2-FF in the mid-IR region using two complementary setups: a continuous supersonic jet coupled to a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer on the IR beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron (JET-AILES), and a pulsed jet coupled to a mid-IR tunable quantum cascade laser spectrometer (SPIRALES). Firstly, jet-cooled spectra recorded at rotational temperatures ranging between 20 and 50 K were exploited to derive reliable excited-state molecular parameters of trans- and cis-2-FF vibrational bands in the fingerprint region. The parameters were obtained from global fits of 11,376 and 3355 lines distributed over eight and three vibrational states (including the ground state), respectively, with a root mean square of 12 MHz. In a second step, the middle resolution spectrum of 2-FF recorded at 298.15 K and available in the HITRAN database was reconstructed by extrapolating the data derived from our low-temperature high-resolution analyses to determine the cross sections of each vibrational band of both 2-FF conformers in the 700-1800 cm^-1 region. Finally, we clearly demonstrated that the contribution of hot bands observed in the room temperature 2-FF spectrum, estimated between 40 and 63% of the fundamental band, must be imperatively introduced in our simulation to correctly reproduce the HITRAN vibrational cross sections of 2-FF with a deviation smaller than 10%.

A review on fluorescence spectroscopic analysis of water and wastewater

In recent years, the application of fluorescence spectroscopy has been widely recognized in water environment studies. The sensitiveness, simplicity, and efficiency of fluorescence spectroscopy are proved to be a promising tool for effective monitoring of water and wastewater. The fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEMs) and synchronous fluorescence spectra have been widely used analysis techniques of fluorescence measurement. The presence of organic matter in water and wastewater defines the degree and type of pollution in water. The application of fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) has made the water quality assessment simple and easy. With the recent advances in this technology, components of DOM are identified by employing parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), a mathematical trilinear data modeling with EEMs. The majority of wastewater studies indicated that the fluorescence peak of EX/EM at 275 nm/340 nm is referred to tryptophan region (Peak T1). However, some researchers identified another fluorescence peak in the region of EX/EM at 225-237 nm/340-381 nm, which described the tryptophan region and labeled it as Peak T2. Generally, peak T is a protein-like component in the water sample, where T1 and T2 signals were derived from the <0.20μm fraction of pollution. Therefore, a more advanced approach, such as an online fluorescence spectrofluorometer, can be used for the online monitoring of water. The results of various waters studied by fluorescence spectroscopy indicate that changes in peak T intensity could be used for real-time wastewater quality assessment and process control of wastewater treatment works. Finally, due to its effective use in water quality assessment, the fluorescence technique is proved to be a surrogate online monitoring tool and early warning equipment.

Computational Study of the Electron Spectra of Vapor-Phase Indole and Four Azaindoles

After geometry optimization, the electron spectra of indole and four azaindoles are calculated by density functional theory. Available experimental photoemission and excitation data for indole and 7-azaindole are used to compare with the theoretical values. The results for the other azaindoles are presented as predictions to help the interpretation of experimental spectra when they become available.

Structural Changes Induced by Quinones: High-Resolution Microwave Study of 1,4-Naphthoquinone

1,4-Naphthoquinone (1,4-NQ) is an important product of naphthalene oxidation, and it appears as a motif in many biologically active compounds. We have investigated the structure of 1,4-NQ using chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. The rotational spectra of the parent species, and its 13 C and 18 O isotopologues were observed in natural abundance, and their spectroscopic parameters were obtained. This allowed the determination of the substitution rs , mass-weighted rm and semi-experimental reSE structures of 1,4-NQ. The obtained structural parameters show that the quinone moiety mainly changes the structure of the benzene ring where it is inserted, modifying the C-C bonds to having predominantly single or double bond character. Furthermore, the molecular electrostatic surface potential reveals that the quinone ring becomes electron deficient while the benzene ring remains a nucleophile. The most electrophilic areas are the hydrogens attached to the double bond in the quinone ring. Knowledge of the nucleophilic and electrophilic areas in 1,4-NQ will help understanding its behaviour interacting with other molecules and guide modifications to tune its properties.

The structural determination and skeletal ring modes of tetrahydropyran

A high-resolution molecular spectroscopy study was carried out on the cyclic ether tetrahydropyran (THP), one of the smallest molecules composed of a pyranose ring.

Isoquinoline gas-phase absorption spectrum in the vacuum ultraviolet between 3.7 and 10.7 eV. New valence and Rydberg electronic states

VUV photons from a synchrotron source were used to record the gas-phase absorption spectrum of isoquinoline over the range 3.5 to 10.7 eV. The rich spectrum exhibits both broad and sharp features, of varying intensities, that are analyzed into eight valence and eight Rydberg transitions. Previous data on the valence transitions of isoquinoline were essentially limited to solution spectra up to 5.4 eV. Our study increases their number considerably. The features in the 3.96 eV region are discussed in terms of vibronic coupling between the nπ* 1¹A′′ and ππ* 2¹A′ valence electronic states. The intensities of some spectral features are augmented by collective π-electron modes considered to be of plasmon-type. Assignments of the valence transitions were facilitated by our DFT calculations and by earlier Pariser–Parr–Pople MO calculations. The calculation results are compared and their relative value is discussed. The DFT calculations reproduce very well a number of experimentally determined properties of the ground state of isoquinoline, in particular its bond distances and angles, rotational constants, vibrational frequencies and dipole moment. No Rydberg series of isoquinoline have previously been observed. Three of the newly observed Rydberg series converge to the D₀ electronic ground state of the ion, while two converge to the D₁ and three to the D₃ excited electronic states of the cation. Astrophysical applications of the VUV absorption spectrum of isoquinoline, in particular the measured absorption cross-sections, are briefly discussed. A comparison between the absorption spectra of isoquinoline and quinoline highlights their similarities and differences, related to their respective molecular orbitals.

A theoretical study of low-lying singlet and triplet excited states of quinazoline, quinoxaline and phthalazine: insight into triplet formation

Quinazoline, quinoxaline and phthalazine are nitrogen containing heterocyclic aromatic molecules which belong to the class diazanaphthalenes. These isomers have low-lying nπ* and naphthalene-like ππ* states that interact via spin-orbit coupling. In this contribution, we study their structure and electronic states by means of a coupled-cluster method. The computed properties are compared to those of cinnoline which were obtained in our previous study [Etinski et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014, 16, 4740]. The excited state features of these isomers are dependent on the position of the nitrogen atoms. We find that quinazoline and quinoxaline exhibit similarities in the ordering and character of the excited states. In contrast, a marked difference in the electronic and geometric structures of the lowest excited triplet states of cinnoline and phthalazine is noticed, although both are orthodiazanaphthalenes. Our findings suggest that the S₁ [radiolysis arrow - arrow with voltage kink] T₁ channel is responsible for the rapid intersystem crossing in quinazoline and quinoxaline, whereas the S₁ [radiolysis arrow - arrow with voltage kink] T₂ pathway is active in phthalazine.

The radio spectra of planar aromatic heterocycles: how to quantify and predict the negative inertial defects

The simplest tricyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocyclic molecules 5,6-benzoquinoline and 7,8-benzoquinoline are possible candidates for detection of aromatic systems in the interstellar medium.
