Free Energies of Hydration for Metal Ions from Heats of Vaporization

Self-Consistent Implementation of a Solvation Free Energy Framework to Predict the Salt Solubilities of Six Alkali Halides

To assess the salt solubilities of six alkali halides in aqueous systems, we proposed a thermodynamic cycle and an efficient molecular modeling methodology. The Gibbs free energy changes for vaporization, dissociation, and dissolution were calculated using the experimental data of ionic thermodynamic properties obtained from the NBS tables. Additionally, the Marcus' and Tissandier's solvation free energy data for Li+, Na+, K+, Cl-, and Br- ions were compared with the conventional solvation free energies by substituting into our self-consistent thermodynamic cycle. Furthermore, Tissandier's absolute solvation free energy data were used as the training set to refit the Lennard-Jones parameters of OPLS-AA force field for ions. To predict salt solubilities, an assumption of a pseudo-solvent was proposed to characterize the coupling work of a solute with its environment from infinitely diluted to saturated solutions, indicating that the Gibbs energy change of solvation process is a function of ionic strength. Following the self-consistency of the cycle, the newly derived formulas were used to determine the salt solubilities by interpolating the intersection of Gibbs free energy of dissolution and the zero free energy line. The refined ion parameters can also predict the structure and thermodynamic properties of aqueous electrolyte solutions, such as densities, pair correlation functions, hydration numbers, mean activity coefficients, vapor pressures, and the radial dependences of the net charge at 298.15 K and 1 bar. Our method can be used to characterize the solid-liquid equilibria of ions or charged particles in aqueous systems. Furthermore, for highly concentrated strong electrolyte systems, it is essential to introduce accurate water models and polarizable force fields.

Similarity between the redox potentials of 3d transition-metal ions in polyanionic insertion materials and aqueous solutions

The transition-metal ions in a solid matrix are oxidised and reduced via a solid-state redox reaction during the charge/discharge process of lithium insertion materials, which are commonly used as positive and negative electrodes in lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, the electrode potentials of lithium insertion materials should be different from the redox potentials of transition-metal ions in aqueous solution (i.e., the standard electrode potential). In this study, the solid-state redox potentials of the transition-metal ions in polyanionic materials with three distinct structures (i.e., olivine, NASICON-type, and MOXO₄-type structures, where M = 3d transition-metal ion, and X = P or S) were surveyed to understand the electrode potentials of lithium insertion materials. The redox potentials of the transition-metal ions in polyanionic materials were very similar to those in aqueous solution despite the differences between the environments of these ions in the MO₆ octahedron in polyanionic materials and the aqua complexes of [M(H₂O)₆]ⁿ⁺ in aqueous solutions. The high coefficient of determination (R² ≈ 0.990) of these two potentials indicated that the solid-state redox potential for the lithium insertion reaction in polyanionic materials can be estimated using the standard electrode potential of the corresponding transition-metal ion in aqueous solution. Finally, the similarity between the redox potentials of the transition-metal ions in polyanionic materials and those in aqua complexes is discussed from the thermodynamic perspective. The present findings on the similarity of the redox potentials of transition-metal ions in different media could provide useful insights into the design of novel insertion materials for rechargeable batteries based on lithium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium, among other metals.

Construction of a Self-Assembled Polyelectrolyte/Graphene Oxide Multilayer Film and Its Interaction with Metal Ions

In this study, a composite multilayer film onto gold was constructed from two charged building blocks, i.e., negatively charged graphene oxide (GO) and a branched polycation (polyethylenimine, PEI) via layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology, and this process was monitored in situ with quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) under different experimental conditions. This included the differences in frequency (Δf) as well as the changes in dissipation to yield information on the absorbed mass and viscoelastic properties of the formed PEI/GO multilayer films. The experimental conditions were optimized to obtain a high amount of the adsorbed mass of the self-assembled multilayer film. The surface morphology of the PEI/GO multilayer film onto gold was studied with atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the positively charged PEI chains were combined with the oppositely charged GO to form an assembled film on the QCM sensor surface, in a wrapped and curled fashion. Raman and UV-vis spectra also showed that the intensities of the GO-characteristic signals are almost linearly related to the layer number. To explore the films for their use in divalent ion detection, the frequency response of the PEI/GO multilayer-modified QCM sensor to the exposure of aqueous solutions solution of Cu²⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Sn²⁺ was further studied using QCM. Based on the Sauerbrey equation and the weight of different ions, the number of metal ions adsorbed per unit area on the surface of QCM sensors was calculated. For metal ion concentrations of 40 ppm, the adsorption capacities per unit area of Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺, Sn²⁺, and Ca²⁺ were found to be 1.7, 3.2, 0.7, and 4.9 nmol/cm², respectively. Thus, in terms of the number of adsorbed ions per unit area, the QCM sensor modified by PEI/GO multilayer film shows the largest adsorption capacity of Ca²⁺. This can be rationalized by the relative hydration energies.

Efficient chemosensors for toxic pollutants based on photoluminescent Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) metal-organic networks

Optical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity, as important analytical tools for chemical and environmental research, can be realized by straightforward synthesis of luminescent one-, two- and three-dimensional Zn(ii) and Cd(ii) crystalline coordination arrays (CPs and MOFs). In these materials with emission centers typically based on charge transfer and intraligand emissions, the quantitative detection of specific analytes, as pesticides or anions, is probed by monitoring real-time changes in their photoluminescence and color emission properties. Pesticides/herbicides have extensive uses in agriculture and household applications. Also, a large amount of metal salts of cyanide is widely used in several industrial processes such as mining and plastic manufacturing. Acute or chronic exposure to these compounds can produce high levels of toxicity in humans, animals and plants. Due to environmental concerns associated with the accumulation of these noxious species in food products and water supplies, there is an urgent and growing need to develop direct, fast, accurate and low-cost sensing methodologies. In this critical frontier, we discuss the effective strategies, chemical stability, luminescence properties, sensitivity and selectivity of recently developed hybrid Zn(ii)/Cd(ii)-organic materials with analytical applications in the direct sensing of pesticides, herbicides and cyanide ions in the aqueous phase and organic solvents.
