Concerted versus stepwise proton transfer reactions in the [2, 2'-bipyridyl]-3-3'-diol molecule: A static and dynamic ab-initio investigation

The double proton transfer (PT) reaction has been investigated in the [2,2'-bipyridyl]-3-3'-diol, a complex molecule where the proton movements is coupled to significant rearrangement of the electronic structure. Moreover, the reaction could be concerted, that is the two protons are exchanged simultaneously, or stepwise, where the two protons are transferred sequentially. To this end, a static exploration of the potential energy surface (PES) was carried together with the analysis of the free-energy surface (FES), both surfaces being evaluated at density functional theory level and different exchange-correlation functionals. While the concerted mechanism has been clearly discharged, the characteristics of the stepwise PT significantly depends on the chosen functionals, some suggesting a clear stepwise mechanism characterized by a stable reaction intermediates and two transitions states, whereas other approaches propend for a asynchronous PT, with a single TS. These features appear on both PES and FES, albeit some differences appears due to their different nature.

Surface hopping modeling of charge and energy transfer in active environments

An active environment is any atomic or molecular system changing a chromophore's nonadiabatic dynamics compared to the isolated molecule. The action of the environment on the chromophore occurs by changing the potential energy landscape and triggering new energy and charge flows unavailable in the vacuum. Surface hopping is a mixed quantum-classical approach whose extreme flexibility has made it the primary platform for implementing novel methodologies to investigate the nonadiabatic dynamics of a chromophore in active environments. This Perspective paper surveys the latest developments in the field, focusing on charge and energy transfer processes.

Tunneling Effect in Proton Transfer: Transfer Matrix Approach

The transfer matrix (TM) method was applied to calculate the transmission probability (TP) for proton transfer reactions. The tunneling factors in the reaction rate constants were also evaluated using the TPs. To test this method, TPs for the Eckart potentials modeled as a guanine-cytosine base pair were calculated by the TM method and compared to TPs by the analytical solution. As a result, the errors in the TPs by the TM method were quite small. The tunneling factors for the guanine-thymine (G-T) and adenine-cytosine (A-C) mispair reactions were then evaluated by the TM method. A shoulder appears on each potential for these reactions [Odai, K.; Umesaki,K. J. Phys. Chem. A. 2021, 125, 8196-8204]. As a result, the shoulder for the G-T mispair reaction contributes significantly to the tunneling, while the shoulder for the A-C mispair reaction contributes little to the tunneling. These results are difficult to obtain with methods such as Wigner's tunneling factor.

Theoretical Study on the Photoacidity of Hydroxypyrene Derivatives in DMSO Using ADC(2) and CC2

This work applies the thermodynamic Förster cycle to theoretically investigate the pK_a^*, i.e., excited-state pK_a values of pyranine-derived superphotoacids developed by Jung and co-workers. The latter photoacids are strong enough to transfer a proton to the aprotic solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The Förster cycle provides access to pK_a^* via the ground-state pK_a and the electronic excitation energies. We use the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) to compute the ground-state pK_a and the correlated wavefunction-based methods ADC(2) and CC2 with the continuum solvation model COSMO to calculate the pK_a change upon excitation. A comparison of the calculated UV/Vis absorption and fluorescence emission energies to the experimental results leads us to infer that this approach allows for a proper description of the electronic excitations. In particular, implicit solvation by means of the COSMO model appears to be sufficient for the treatment of these photoacids in DMSO. The calculations confirm the presumption that a charge redistribution from the hydroxy group to the aromatic ring and the electron-withdrawing substituents is the origin of photoacidity for these photoacids. Moreover, the calculations with the continuum solvation model predict that the pK_a jump upon excitation decreases with increasing solvent polarity, as rationalized based on the Förster cycle.

Prediction of acid pKa values in the solvent acetone based on COSMO-RS

In this contribution we extent the use of the conductor-like screening model for realistic solvation (COSMO-RS) to the prediction of pK_a values in acetone, a commonly used dipolar aprotic solvent. For this, we calculated the Gibbs free energy of dissociation of 120 organic acids (nine acrylic acids, 87 benzoic acids, nine phenols, and 15 benzenesulfonamides) using COSMO-RS at the two levels BP-TZVP and BP-TZVPD-FINE and determined the parameters for a linear free energy relation for the p K a prediction by performing linear fits to experimental values. Our results suggest that the data set dissects into two groups, with the phenols being different from the other three subsets. The acrylic and benzoic acids and the sulfonamides can be treated together and yield an excellent linear correlation ( r 2 > 0.95 ) with an RMSD of only ~0.3. The slope is found to be significantly smaller than the theoretical value ( 1 / RT ln 10 ), only 45% of it, which is in accordance with findings in the literature. The phenols, however, while similarly well correlated in their own subset with an RMSD of 1.7-1.9, exhibit a slope larger than one. We discuss both a higher uncertainty in the reference values as well as physical origins as possible reasons.

Cavity-Modulated Proton Transfer Reactions

Proton transfer is ubiquitous in many fundamental chemical and biological processes, and the ability to modulate and control the proton transfer rate would have a major impact on numerous quantum technological advances. One possibility to modulate the reaction rate of proton transfer processes is given by exploiting the strong light-matter coupling of chemical systems inside optical or nanoplasmonic cavities. In this work, we investigate the proton transfer reactions in the prototype malonaldehyde and Z-3-amino-propenal (aminopropenal) molecules using different quantum electrodynamics methods, in particular, quantum electrodynamics coupled cluster theory and quantum electrodynamical density functional theory. Depending on the cavity mode polarization direction, we show that the optical cavity can increase the reaction energy barrier by 10-20% or decrease the reaction barrier by ∼5%. By using first-principles methods, this work establishes strong light-matter coupling as a viable and practical route to alter and catalyze proton transfer reactions.
