Preparation of AgCl Nanocubes and Their Application as Efficient Photoinitiators in the Polymerization of N-Isopropylacrylamide

Unveiling the Role of Precursors in the Byproduct Formation of AgCl-Replicated Bimetallic Nanostructures and Their Stability-Dependent Photothermal Properties

AgCl nanomaterials recently attracted scientific interest as useful structural building blocks for producing metallic nanomaterials owing to their facile synthesis, controllable morphology, and ease of removal under ambient conditions. However, their complex chemical reactivity has primarily been studied in association with water solubility or reducibility. This study investigates the pivotal role of precursor ligands in the photochemical synthesis of metallic cubic mesh nanostructures on the AgCl templates. The side reactions between AgCl and Au precursors with different ligands are thoroughly discussed along with their influence on the byproduct formation and the structural stability of the resulting metallic nanostructures. Importantly, we introduce for the first time the partial destruction of AgCl and the formation of undesirable byproducts caused by the presence of highly oxidizing and Cl-containing AuCl₄^-. In addition, a synthetic route for producing highly pure and stable metallic nanostructures using a halogen-free Au precursor or Pt-priming is proposed. Further, the photothermal properties of these replicated metallic nanostructures are presented as a new evaluation tool for analyzing their overall structural stability. Discovering the role of precursor ligands in the reaction system will prove useful as a guide for the synthesis of functional noble metal nanomaterials using silver halide templates.

Tunable Quantum Photoinitiators for Radical Photopolymerization

This review describes the use of nanocrystal-based photocatalysts as quantum photoinitiators, including semiconductor nanocrystals (e.g., metal oxides, metal sulfides, quantum dots), carbon dots, graphene-based nanohybrids, plasmonic nanocomposites with organic photoinitiators, and tunable upconverting nanocomposites. The optoelectronic properties, cross-linking behavior, and mechanism of action of quantum photoinitiators are considered. The challenges and prospects associated with the use of quantum photoinitiators for processes such as radical polymerization, reversible deactivation radical polymerization, and photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization are reviewed. Due to their unique capabilities, we forsee a growing role for quantum photoinitiators over the coming years.

Role of External Field in Polymerization: Mechanism and Kinetics

The past decades have witnessed an increasing interest in developing advanced polymerization techniques subjected to external fields. Various physical modulations, such as temperature, light, electricity, magnetic field, ultrasound, and microwave irradiation, are noninvasive means, having superb but distinct abilities to regulate polymerizations in terms of process intensification and spatial and temporal controls. Gas as an emerging regulator plays a distinctive role in controlling polymerization and resembles a physical regulator in some cases. This review provides a systematic overview of seven types of external-field-regulated polymerizations, ranging from chain-growth to step-growth polymerization. A detailed account of the relevant mechanism and kinetics is provided to better understand the role of each external field in polymerization. In addition, given the crucial role of modeling and simulation in mechanisms and kinetics investigation, an overview of model construction and typical numerical methods used in this field as well as highlights of the interaction between experiment and simulation toward kinetics in the existing systems are given. At the end, limitations and future perspectives for this field are critically discussed. This state-of-the-art research progress not only provides the fundamental principles underlying external-field-regulated polymerizations but also stimulates new development of advanced polymerization methods.

Wrapping AgCl Nanostructures with Trimetallic Nanomeshes for Plasmon-Enhanced Catalysis and in Situ SERS Monitoring of Chemical Reactions

Selective chemical control of multiple reactions is incredibly important for the fabrication of sophisticated nanostructures for functional applications. A representative example is the synthesis of plasmonic nanomaterial-silver chloride (AgCl) conjugates, where metal ions should be selectively reduced into metallic nanostructures for plasmon-enhanced catalytic activity, while the reducible AgCl nanomaterials remain intact despite the presence of a chemical reductant. In addition to the selectively controlled reduction, the plasmonic nanostructures should be appropriately designed for the high stability and photoefficiency of catalysts. In this study, we demonstrate how AgCl nanocubes and nanospheres could be comprehensively wrapped by plasmonic three-dimensional nanomesh structures consisting of gold, silver, and palladium by the selective reduction of their ionic precursors while the AgCl nanostructures remain intact. Complete trimetallic wrapping provided the absorption of visible light, while the porosity of the nanomesh structures exposed the photocatalytic AgCl surface to catalyze desired reactions. Platinum in place of palladium was examined to demonstrate the versatility of the wrapping scheme, resulting in an extraordinary catalytic activity. Importantly, the detailed chemical mechanism behind the trimetallic wrapping of the AgCl nanostructures was systematically investigated to understand the roles of each reaction component in controlling the chemical selectivity. The synthesized AgCl-trimetal nanoconjugates excellently exhibit both metal-based and plasmon-enhanced catalytic properties for the removal of environmentally harmful Cr⁶⁺. Moreover, their applications as surface-enhanced Raman-scattering (SERS) probes for the in situ monitoring of catalytic reduction in real-time and as single-nanoparticle SERS probes for molecular detection are thoroughly demonstrated.

Ag Nanometallic Surfaces for Self-Assembled Ordered Morphologies of Zein

Nanometallic surfaces of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) catalyzed the self-aggregation behavior of zein in different ordered morphologies such as cubes, rectangles, and bars. This was studied in a ternary in situ reaction (AgNO₃ + zein + water), where zein performed the reduction as well as stabilization of Ag NPs. This reaction produced small Ag NPs of less than 10 nm predominantly bound with {111} crystal planes, which attracted the surface adsorption of zein. Surface-adsorbed zein initiated the protein seeding and converted the tertiary structure of protein into open β-pleated structure with aqueous exposed hydrophobic domains. A layered deposition of β-pleats on different crystal planes of Ag NPs derived them to nearly monodispersed cubic morphologies. The mechanistic aspects of self-aggregation of zein in the presence of nanometallic surfaces hold possible scenarios for simple and straightforward routes of protein crystallization.

Designing Novel Nonsymmetric Ag/AgI Nanoplates for Superior Photocatalytic Activity

Precisely engineering the decoration of metal nanoparticles on the special surface of semiconductor represents a promising strategy to design efficient metal-semiconductor heterostructured photocatalysts. This study demonstrates a versatile soft-template method to fabricate a novel nonsymmetrical heterostructured Ag/AgI nanoplate, in which only one side surface of the nanoplate is covered with uniform 2D Ag nanoweb. Compared with symmetrical heterostructure, the nonsymmetrical heterostructure may further facilitate the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and shows a greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity. This study may open up a new way to improve the photocatalytic property by synthesizing nonsymmetrical metal-semiconductor composites.

Non-equilibrium concentration fluctuations in superparamagnetic nanocolloids

We investigate non-equilibrium concentration fluctuations during the free diffusion of a colloidal suspension against pure water. We investigate Fe₂O₃ superparamagnetic nanocolloids with sizes between 1 and 10 nm by means of a shadowgraph apparatus to determine the mixture mass diffusion coefficient and kinematic viscosity. The experiments were performed in three distinct conditions: Experiment 1 is without any magnetic field; Experiment 2 with a vertical magnetic field; Experiment 3 after turning off the magnetic field. We found no correlation between the kinematic viscosity coefficient and the external magnetic field. Conversely, we found that the mass diffusion coefficient decreases in the presence of the external magnetic field and slowly rebounds after the magnetic field was turned off.
