Observing the Kinetic Pathway of Nanotube Formation from Bolaamphiphiles by Time-Resolved Small-Angle X-ray Scattering

Recent advances in synchrotron scattering methods for probing the structure and dynamics of colloids

Recent progress in synchrotron based X-ray scattering methods applied to colloid science is reviewed. An important figure of merit of these techniques is that they enable in situ investigations of colloidal systems under the desired thermophysical and rheological conditions. An ensemble averaged simultaneous structural and dynamical information can be derived albeit in reciprocal space. Significant improvements in X-ray source brilliance and advances in detector technology have overcome some of the limitations in the past. Notably coherent X-ray scattering techniques have become more competitive and they provide complementary information to laboratory based real space methods. For a system with sufficient scattering contrast, size ranges from nm to several μm and time scales down to μs are now amenable to X-ray scattering investigations. A wide variety of sample environments can be combined with scattering experiments further enriching the science that could be pursued by means of advanced X-ray scattering instruments. Some of these recent progresses are illustrated via representative examples. To derive quantitative information from the scattering data, rigorous data analysis or modeling is required. Development of powerful computational tools including the use of artificial intelligence have become the emerging trend.

Stimuli-Responsive Transformable Supramolecular Nanotubes

Supramolecular nanotubes produced by self-assembly of organic molecules can have unique structural features such as a one-dimensional morphology with no branching, distinguishable inner and outer surfaces and membrane walls, or a structure that is hollow and has a high aspect ratio. Incorporation of functional groups that respond to external chemical or physical stimuli into the constituent organic molecules of supramolecular nanotubes allows us to drastically change the structure of the nanotubes by applying such stimuli. This ability affords an array of controllable approaches for the encapsulation, storage, and release of guest compounds, which is expected to be useful in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine. In this article, I review the supramolecular nanotubes developed by our group that exhibit morphological transformations in response to pH, chemical reaction, light, temperature, or moisture.

Multiscale Structural Elucidation of Peptide Nanotubes by X-Ray Scattering Methods

This mini-review presents the structural investigations of the self-assembled peptide nanotubes using X-ray scattering techniques. As compared to electron microscopy, scattering methods enable studies of nanotubes in solution under the appropriate physicochemical conditions and probe their formation mechanism. In addition, a combination of X-ray scattering methods allow the elucidation of structural organization from the molecular scale to the dimension of nanotubes.

Flower Necklaces of Controllable Length Formed From N-(2-Hydroxypropyl) Methacrylamide-Based Amphiphilic Statistical Copolymers

N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA)-based statistical copolymers bearing anticancer drugs have attracted attention for their efficacy in cancer treatments. However, controlling the size and morphology of aggregates of this type of polymer has been challenging and is far from being understood. In this study, small-angle X-ray scattering and asymmetric-flow field-flow fractionation with multiangle light scattering were used to investigate the structure of aggregates formed in aqueous solutions of HPMA-based statistical copolymers of different molecular weights with the model drug pyrene borne in different amounts. The analysis revealed that spherical objects (flower micelles) were formed by the assembly of pyrene moieties in low-molecular-weight copolymers, and the flower micelles connected linearly to form string-of-pearls assemblies (flower necklaces) in high-molecular-weight copolymers. The number of pyrene moieties per polymer chain likely dominates the size and morphology of the copolymer micelles. This study shows how to alter the aggregate structure by changing the molecular weight and composition of copolymers.

Time-controllable roll-up onset of polythiophene sheets into nanotubes that exhibit circularly polarized luminescence

Self-assembly of a polythiophene-conjugated glycolipid exclusively produced square sheets a few micrometers on each side. Seventeen hours after the sheets were dispersed in ethanol at 25 °C, they suddenly started to roll up, and eventually they were completely transformed into nanotubes. The onset timing of the roll-up was temperature-dependent. The roll-up involved rearrangement of the molecular packing within the bilayer membranes, which was accompanied by strengthening of the intermolecular hydrogen bonds, alteration of the polythiophene aggregation mode and enhancement of supramolecular chirality due to chiral packing. The nanotubes exhibited not only strong fluorescence derived from J-type aggregation of the polythiophene aromatic moiety but also circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) originating from the left-handed helicity of the polythiophene main chain backbone. Because the CPL onset was concurrent with the sheet roll-up, the CPL onset was also able to be controlled by varying the temperature. Such delayed CPL onset has never been reported in chiral supramolecular structures, in which CPL onset and helicity inversion usually begin immediately upon application of a stimulus and then progress either quickly or gradually. Our findings can be expected to facilitate the development of new stimulus-responsive supramolecular structures that can be used for delayed-action capsules or optical switching devices.

Synchrotron Scattering Methods for Nanomaterials and Soft Matter Research

This article aims to provide an overview of broad range of applications of synchrotron scattering methods in the investigation of nanoscale materials. These scattering techniques allow the elucidation of the structure and dynamics of nanomaterials from sub-nm to micron size scales and down to sub-millisecond time ranges both in bulk and at interfaces. A major advantage of scattering methods is that they provide the ensemble averaged information under in situ and operando conditions. As a result, they are complementary to various imaging techniques which reveal more local information. Scattering methods are particularly suitable for probing buried structures that are difficult to image. Although, many qualitative features can be directly extracted from scattering data, derivation of detailed structural and dynamical information requires quantitative modeling. The fourth-generation synchrotron sources open new possibilities for investigating these complex systems by exploiting the enhanced brightness and coherence properties of X-rays.
