Cold Crystallization of Ferrocene-Hinged π-Conjugated Molecule Induced by the Limited Conformational Freedom of Ferrocene

Molecular aggregation by hydrogen bonding in cold-crystallization behavior of mixed nucleobases analyzed by temperature-controlled infrared spectroscopy

The cold-crystallization behaviors of dodecyl-substituted nucleobases (adenine, uracil, and thymine) were analyzed. The dodecyl derivative from uracil alone did not exhibit cold crystallization; however, a mixture of adenine and uracil derivatives at a molar ratio of 1 : 1 exhibited cold crystallization. These results are similar to the thermal behavior of dodecyl derivatives of adenine and thymine alone and in mixtures reported in a previous study. Temperature-controlled infrared spectroscopy was used to observe the molecular assembly states of the liquid, supercooled state, and cold-crystallized compounds. Hydrogen-bonded molecular pairs in the high-temperature liquid state, multiple hydrogen-bonded networks in the supercooled state, and reverse Hoogsteen-type complementary hydrogen bonds in cold-crystallized compounds were observed using infrared spectroscopy. The heterogeneity of the system, due to multiple types of hydrogen bonding, retarded the crystallization rate, resulting in supercooling and cold crystallization. Infrared spectroscopy, which can be used to measure the aggregation state of molecules, including the liquid and supercooled states, is an effective analytical method for clarifying the process of cold crystallization.

Remarkable Enhancement of Hole Mobility of Novel DA-D'-AD Small Molecules by Thermal Annealing: Effect of the D'-Bridge Block

Conjugated small molecules are advanced semiconductor materials with attractive physicochemical and optoelectronic properties enabling the development of next-generation electronic devices. The charge carrier mobility of small molecules strongly influences the efficiency of organic and hybrid electronics based on them. Herein, we report the synthesis of four novel small molecules and their investigation with regard to the impact of molecular structure and thermal treatment of films on charge carriers' mobility. The benzodithiophene-containing compounds (BDT) were shown to be more promising in terms of tuning the morphology upon thermal treatment. Impressive enhancement of hole mobilities by more than 50 times was found for annealed films based on a compound M4 comprising triisopropylsilyl-functionalized BDT core. The results provide a favorable experience and strategy for the rational design of state-of-the-art organic semiconductor materials (OSMs) and for improving their charge-transport characteristics.

Design of Crystal Growth Dimensionality in Synthetic Wax: The Kinetics of Nonisothermal Crystallization Processes

The demand for the development of multifunctional materials in emerging technologies has stimulated intensive research on the control of crystallization processes in numerous scientific and engineering fields. In this article, we examine the kinetics of nonisothermal melt crystallization in synthetic wax using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) supported by polarized optical microscopy (POM) to describe crystallization modes in a multicomponent molecular system. We detected the macroscopic growth of three crystal phases and the formation of two crystal phases as a transformation from a disordered crystal mesophase into an ordered crystal. To characterize individual crystal phase formation, we examine the activation energy evaluated by isoconversional analysis and utilize the Ozawa and Mo methods to determine the kinetic details of the crystal growth from the isotropic phase. Our investigation reveals the possibility of the design of crystal growth dimensionality as three-dimensional spherulitic-like, two-dimensional rodlike, and one-dimensional needle-shaped crystal forms of shorter n-alkanes by controlling the solidification pathway of long-chain n-alkanes and the interplay of the thermodynamic and kinetic mechanisms of crystallization.

Non-isothermal cold crystallization of liquid crystalline porphyrins

A series of liquid crystalline porphyrins was synthesized, purified, and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage polarized optical microscopy (HS-POM) revealed that the porphyrins in the series with shorter alkyl arm lengths exhibit kinetic cold crystallization, wherein the molecules spontaneously organize into large, disc-like structures that remain stable upon cooling. Using DSC, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters related to these materials were determined. Analysis of non-isothermal crystallization revealed the presence of multiple nucleation and growth processes related to cold crystallization.

Cold crystallization and photo-induced thermal behavior of alkyl-derivatized diarylethene molecules

The thermal behavior of alkylated diarylethene molecules (2,3-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)-N-alkylmaleimides; DAE-Cn) was investigated. DAE-C1 and DAE-C2 exhibited cold crystallization, which is a heat-storage phenomenon. In addition, DAE-Cn showed photoisomerization; the open-ring isomer O-DAE-Cn was formed by visible light irradiation and transformed to the closed-ring isomer C-DAE-Cn by UV light irradiation. X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy analyses revealed that O-DAE-Cn exhibited cold crystallization and C-DAE-Cn showed poor crystallinity. UV irradiation (365 nm) inhibited cold crystallization, and visible light irradiation (525 nm) triggered cold crystallization, suggesting that heat storage by the cold crystallization of DAE-Cn can be photo-controlled.

The alkylated diarylethene molecules exhibited cold crystallization, and their thermal behavior can be photo-controlled.

Thermal Stability, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and Flammability Properties of Woven Kenaf/Polyester-Reinforced Polylactic Acid Hybrid Laminated Composites

This paper presents the thermal and flammability properties of woven kenaf/polyester-reinforced polylactic acid hybrid laminated composites. The effects of the fiber content and stacking sequences of hybrid composites were examined. The hybrid composites were fabricated using the hot press method. Thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and flammability properties of woven kenaf/polyester-reinforced polylactic hybrid composites were reported. The thermal results have demonstrated the effect of the hybridization of the composites on the thermal stability and viscoelastic properties of the laminates. The work also measured the burning rate of the hybrid composites during the flammability test. The S7 sample that consisted of all woven kenaf layers in composite recorded the highest char residue of 10%, and the S8 sample displayed the highest decomposition temperature among all samples. However, as for hybrid composites, the S5 sample shows the optimum result with a high char yield and exhibited the lowest burning rate at 29 mm/min. The S5 sample also shows the optimum viscoelastic properties such as storage and loss modulus among hybrid composites.

Halogen Bonding in Dithiane/Iodofluorobenzene Mixtures: A New Class of Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents

While research into deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has expanded over the previous two decades, the focus has remained on the utilization of hydrogen bond donors in these systems. Additionally, the majority of the known DESs rely on at least one ionic component. Through the combination of 1,3-dithiane and 1,2-diiodo-3,4,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (1,2-F₄ DIB), we report the first known DES based on halogen bonding. This mixture remains a liquid, with a eutectic melting temperature of 13.7 °C over a range of 1,3-dithiane mole fraction (0.35 to 0.75). Additionally, cocrystals of 1,3- and 1,4-dithiane with 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-F₄ DIB, as well as 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene were studied via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These data reveal a wide range of halogen bonding strengths (0.85<R_XB <0.99; R_XB =normalized halogen bond distance parameter) and geometries about the sulfur atom. By including intermolecular interactions beyond hydrogen bonding, the scope of possible DES systems can be greatly expanded.

Cold Crystallization of the Organic n-Type Small Molecule Semiconductor 2-Decyl-7-phenyl-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene S,S,S',S'-Tetraoxide

The asymmetric n-type Ph-BTBT-C₁₀ derivative 2-decyl-7-phenyl-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene S,S,S',S'-tetraoxide is structurally investigated in the thin film regime. After film preparation by spin coating and physical vapor deposition, a rather disordered structure is observed, with a strong change of its internal degree of order upon heating. At 95 °C, a transition into a layered structure of upright standing molecules without any in-plane order appears, and at 135 °C, crystallization takes place. This phase information is combined with surface morphological studies and charge carrier mobility measurements to describe the structure and thin film transistor applicability of this molecule.

Discrete π Stack of a Tweezer-Shaped Naphthalenediimide-Anthracene Conjugate

The design and synthesis of a tweezer-shaped naphthalenediimide (NDI)-anthracene conjugate (2NDI) are reported. In the structure of the closed form (π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack) of 2NDI, which was elucidated by single-crystal XRD, the existence of C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonding involving the nearest carbonyl oxygen atom of an NDI unit was suggested. The tunability of π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions was studied by means of UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling. This revealed that the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions in 2NDI affect the absorption and emission properties depending on the temperature. Furthermore, in polar solvents, 2NDI prefers the stronger π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack, whereas the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interaction is diminished in nonpolar solvents. Importantly, the conformational variations of 2NDI can be reversibly switched by variation in temperature, and this suggests potential application for fluorogenic molecular switches upon temperature changes.
