High-Performance Photovoltaic Materials Based on the Superlattice Structures of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite and Superhalogen Hybrid Perovskite

Intrinsic defects at the interface of the FAPbI3/MAPbI3 superlattice: insight from first-principles calculations

The use of a superlattice structure is an effective strategy to develop novel perovskites and obtain excellent light-absorbing materials. Based on first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the properties of intrinsic point defects at the interface of the FAPbI₃/MAPbI₃ superlattice. Our calculations show that charged defects are easier to form as compared to neutral ones at the superlattice interface due to low formation energies. Most defects with low formation energies have a shallow level in the band gap, and some deep level defects have high formation energies, so the superlattice perovskite exhibits high defect tolerance. Pb_I³⁺ is a dominant and detrimental defect, which acts as a non-radiative recombination center because it has low formation energy and a deep transition level. To avoid the generation of Pb_I³⁺ defects, it is suggested to synthesize FAPbI₃/MAPbI₃ superlattices under I-rich conditions. The calculated light absorption coefficients and photovoltaic performance parameters demonstrate that the presence of defects leads to a certain degree of reduction in light absorption and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells made of FAPbI₃/MAPbI₃ superlattices, but the excellent performance of the perovskite solar cell (PSC) is basically retained. The superlattice perovskites are still promising candidates for light-absorbing materials of PSCs. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the properties of defects at the superlattice interface and provide theoretical support for the design of high performance PSCs.

Design, synthesis, and characterization of a new hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite with a high-Tc dielectric transition

Phase change materials (PCMs) have drawn increasing attention for their promising applications in thermal switches, data communication, and energy storage. Because of the complexity of the interactions between molecules, it is still a challenge to design PCMs with a desired high phase transition temperature (T_c). In this study, a one-dimensional hybrid perovskite of (TEACCl)PbBr₃ (1, TEACCl = Et₃NCH₂Cl) was successfully designed and synthesized with a T_c = 390 K. Disordering of TEACCl⁺ on the heating process is the origin of the structural phase transition of 1 from the P2₁/c to P6₃/mmc structure. It is noted that the phase transition is associated with an excellent switchable dielectric property, which indicates that 1 has the potential to be applied to sensor equipment. After calculation, 1 is an infrequent indirect bandgap semiconductor with an energy gap of 3.57 eV. Moreover, 1 exhibits strong red fluorescence under irradiation of UV light. This work will provide guidance for designing high T_c switching materials.

Improved Power Conversion Efficiency with Tunable Electronic Structures of the Cation-Engineered [Ai]PbI3 Perovskites for Solar Cells: First-Principles Calculations

Higher power conversion efficiencies for photovoltaic devices can be achieved through simple and low production cost processing of APbI3(A=CH3NH3,CHN2H4,…) perovskites. Due to their limited long-term stability, however, there is an urgent need to find alternative structural combinations for this family of materials. In this study, we propose to investigate the prospects of cation-substitution within the A-site of the APbI3 perovskite by selecting nine substituting organic and inorganic cations to enhance the stability of the material. The tolerance and the octahedral factors are calculated and reported as two of the most critical geometrical features, in order to assess which perovskite compounds can be experimentally designed. Our results showed an improvement in the thermal stability of the organic cation substitutions in contrast to the inorganic cations, with an increase in the power conversion efficiency of the Hydroxyl-ammonium (NH3OH) substitute to η = 25.84%.

Assessment of XC functionals for the study of organic molecules with superhalogen substitution. A systematic comparison between DFT and CCSD(T)

A systematic density functional theory study, including 17 exchange-correlation functionals, was performed on 22 composite structures consisting of organic molecules, e.g., ethylene, ethane, and benzene, and superhalogen substitutions arising from [MgX₃]^- and [Mg₂X₅]^- (X = F, Cl). Range-separated hybrid functionals ωB97M-V, ωB97X-D3(BJ), ωB97XD, ωB97X, and CAM-B3LYP, as well as double-hybrid functionals B2PLYP and DSD-PBEP86-D3(BJ), are verified to provide reliable results with accuracy approaching that at the coupled-cluster single double triple [CCSD(T)] level. The basis set effect of density functional theory calculation is usually moderate, and triple-ξ quality, e.g., Def2-TZVP, is enough in most cases. In addition, the average values from HF and MP2 method, indicated as (MP2 + HF)/2, are also quite close to those of CCSD(T).

Mechano-optical Modulation of Excitons and Carrier Recombination in Self-Assembled Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots

Mechanically modulating optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals and organic molecules are valuable for mechano-optical and optomechanical devices. Halide perovskites with excellent optical and electronic properties are promising for such applications. We report the mechanically changing excitons and photoluminescence of self-assembled formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr₃) quantum dots. The as-synthesized quantum dots (3.6 nm diameter), showing blue emission and a short photoluminescence lifetime (2.6 ns), form 20-300 nm 2D and 3D self-assemblies with intense green emission in a solution or a film. The blue emission and short photoluminescence lifetime of the quantum dots are different from the delayed (ca. 550 ns) green emission from the assemblies. Thus, we consider the structure and excitonic properties of individual quantum dots differently from the self-assemblies. The blue emission and short lifetime of individual quantum dots are consistent with a weak dielectric screening of excitons or strong quantum confinement. The red-shifted emission and a long photoluminescence lifetime of the assemblies suggest a strong dielectric screening that weakens the quantum confinement, allowing excitons to split into free carriers, diffuse, and trap. The delayed emission suggests nongeminate recombination of diffusing and detrapped carriers. Interestingly, the green emission of the self-assembly blueshifts by applying a lateral mechanical force (ca. 4.65 N). Correspondingly, the photoluminescence lifetime decreases by 1 order of magnitude. These photoluminescence changes suggest the mechanical dissociation of the quantum dot self-assemblies and mechanically controlled exciton splitting and recombination. The mechanically changing emission color and lifetime of halide perovskite are promising for mechano-optical and optomechanical switches and sensors.

A Covalent Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Superlattice Covered with Organic Functional Groups for Highly Sensitive and Selective Gas Sensing

Organic-inorganic hybrid superlattices (OIHSLs) hold attractive physical and chemical properties, while the construction of single-crystal covalent OIHSLs has not been achieved. Herein a coordination assembly strategy was proposed to create a single-crystal covalent OIHSL PbBDT (BDT=1,4-benzenedithiolate), where layered [PbS₂ ] sublattice covalently connects with benzene sublattice. The covalent bonding offers better thermo-/chemi-stability, inter-sublattice electron transport, and unique organic-group-functionalized surface, which may enable better performances in chemical applications than non-covalent OIHSL. These features endow PbBDT with the highest sensitivity, the lowest detection limit and excellent selectivity towards NO₂ at room temperature among all chemiresistive gas-sensing materials with reported response time less than 2 min without the need of light assistance.

A Microstructural Analysis of 2D Halide Perovskites: Stability and Functionality

Recent observations have demonstrated that the photoelectric conversion properties of perovskite materials are intimately related to the presence of superlattice structures and other unusual nanoscale features in them. The low-dimensional or mixed-dimensional halide perovskite families are found to be more efficient materials for device application than three-dimensional halide perovskites. The emergence of perovskite solar cells has revolutionized the solar cell industry because of their flexible architecture and rapidly increased efficiency. Tuning the dielectric constant and charge separation are the main objectives in designing a photovoltaic device that can be explored using the two-dimensional perovskite family. Thus, revisiting the fundamental properties of perovskite crystals could reveal further possibilities for recognizing these improvements toward device functionality. In this context, this review discusses the material properties of two-dimensional halide perovskites and related optoelectronic devices, aiming particularly for solar cell applications.

Effects of compositional engineering and surface passivation on the properties of halide perovskites: a theoretical understanding

Halide perovskite solar cells have demonstrated high performance and moisture stability via compositional engineering and surface passivation.
