Dynamics of Intermittent Delayed Emission in Single CdSe/CdS Quantum Dots

Fluctuations in the Photoluminescence Excitation Spectra of Individual Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Most single quantum emitters display non-steady emission properties. Models that explain this effect have primarily relied on photoluminescence measurements that reveal variations in intensity, wavelength, and excited-state lifetime. While photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy could provide complementary information, existing experimental methods cannot collect spectra before individual emitters change in intensity (blink) or wavelength (spectrally diffuse). Here, we present an experimental approach that circumvents such issues, allowing the collection of excitation spectra from individual emitters. Using rapid modulation of the excitation wavelength, we collect and classify excitation spectra from individual CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell quantum dots. The spectra, along with simultaneous time-correlated single-photon counting, reveal two separate emission-reduction mechanisms caused by charging and trapping, respectively. During bright emission periods, we also observe a correlation between emission red-shifts and the increased oscillator strength of higher excited states. Quantum-mechanical modeling indicates that diffusion of charges in the vicinity of an emitter polarizes the exciton and transfers the oscillator strength to higher-energy transitions.

Nanotechnology in the diagnostic and therapy for Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily characterized by β-amyloid plaque, intraneuronal tangles, significant neuronal loss and cognitive deficit. Treatment in the early stages of the disease is crucial for preventing or perhaps reversing the neurodegeneration in the AD cases. However, none of the current diagnostic procedures are capable of early diagnosis of AD. Further, the available treatments merely provide symptomatic alleviation in AD and do not address the underlying illness. Therefore, there is no permanent cure for AD currently. Better therapeutic outcomes need the optimum drug concentration in the central nervous system (CNS) by traversing blood-brain-barrier (BBB). Nanotechnology offers enormous promise to transform the treatment and diagnostics of neurodegenerative diseases. Nanotechnology based diagnostic tools, drug delivery systems and theragnostic are capable of highly sensitive molecular detection, effective drug targeting and their combination. Significant work has been done in this area over the last decade and prospective results have been obtained in AD therapy. This review explores the various applications of nanotechnology in addressing the varied facets of AD, ranging from early detection to therapeutic interventions. This review also looks at how nanotechnology can help with the development of disease-modifying medicines, such as the delivery of anti-amyloid, anti-tau, cholinesterase inhibitors, antioxidants and hormonal drugs. In conclusion, this paper discusses the role of nanotechnology in the early detection of AD, effective drug targeting to the CNS and theragnostic applications in the management of AD.

Biexciton Blinking in CdSe-Based Quantum Dots

Experiments on single colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have revealed temporal fluctuations in the emission efficiency of the single-exciton state. These fluctuations, often termed "blinking", are caused by opening/closing of charge-carrier traps and/or charging/discharging of the QD. In the regime of strong optical excitation, multiexciton states are formed. The emission efficiencies of multiexcitons are lower because of Auger processes, but a quantitative characterization is challenging. Here, we quantify fluctuations of the biexciton efficiency for single CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell QDs. We find that the biexciton efficiency "blinks" significantly. The additional electron due to charging of a QD accelerates Auger recombination by a factor of 2 compared to the neutral biexciton, while opening/closing of a charge-carrier trap leads to an increase of the nonradiative recombination rate by a factor of 4. To understand the fast rate of trap-assisted recombination, we propose a revised model for trap-assisted recombination based on reversible trapping. Finally, we discuss the implications of biexciton blinking for lasing applications.

Sequential Carrier Transfer Can Accelerate Triplet Energy Transfer from Functionalized CdSe Nanocrystals

Nanocrystal (NC)-sensitized triplet-fusion upconversion is a rising strategy to convert long-wavelength, incoherent light into higher-energy output photons. Here, we chart the photophysics of tailor-functionalized CdSe NCs to understand energy transfer to surface-anchored transmitter ligands, which can proceed via correlated exciton transfer or sequential carrier hops. Varying NC size, we observe a pronounced acceleration of energy transfer (from k_quench = 0.0096 ns^-1 ligand^-1 to 0.064 ns^-1 ligand^-1) when the barrier to hole-first sequential transfer is lowered from 100 ± 25 meV to 50 ± 25 meV. This acceleration is 5.1× the expected effect of increased carrier wave function leakage, so we conclude that sequential transfer becomes kinetically dominant under the latter conditions. Last, transient photoluminescence shows that NC band-edge and trap states are comparably quenched by functionalization (up to ∼98% for sequential transfer) and exhibit matched dynamics for t > 300 ns, consistent with a dynamic quasi-equilibrium where photoexcitations can ultimately be extracted even when a carrier is initially trapped.

All-optical fluorescence blinking control in quantum dots with ultrafast mid-infrared pulses

Photoluminescence intermittency is a ubiquitous phenomenon, reducing the temporal emission intensity stability of single colloidal quantum dots (QDs) and the emission quantum yield of their ensembles. Despite efforts to achieve blinking reduction by chemical engineering of the QD architecture and its environment, blinking still poses barriers to the application of QDs, particularly in single-particle tracking in biology or in single-photon sources. Here, we demonstrate a deterministic all-optical suppression of QD blinking using a compound technique of visible and mid-infrared excitation. We show that moderate-field ultrafast mid-infrared pulses (5.5 μm, 150 fs) can switch the emission from a charged, low quantum yield grey trion state to the bright exciton state in CdSe/CdS core-shell QDs, resulting in a significant reduction of the QD intensity flicker. Quantum-tunnelling simulations suggest that the mid-infrared fields remove the excess charge from trions with reduced emission quantum yield to restore higher brightness exciton emission. Our approach can be integrated with existing single-particle tracking or super-resolution microscopy techniques without any modification to the sample and translates to other emitters presenting charging-induced photoluminescence intermittencies, such as single-photon emissive defects in diamond and two-dimensional materials.

An Update on Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle Applications in Nanomedicine

The efficient and safe delivery of therapeutic drugs, proteins, and nucleic acids are essential for meaningful therapeutic benefits. The field of nanomedicine shows promising implications in the development of therapeutics by delivering diagnostic and therapeutic compounds. Nanomedicine development has led to significant advances in the design and engineering of nanocarrier systems with supra-molecular structures. Smart mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), with excellent biocompatibility, tunable physicochemical properties, and site-specific functionalization, offer efficient and high loading capacity as well as robust and targeted delivery of a variety of payloads in a controlled fashion. Such unique nanocarriers should have great potential for challenging biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, bioimaging techniques, stem cell research, and cancer therapies. However, in vivo applications of these nanocarriers should be further validated before clinical translation. To this end, this review begins with a brief introduction of MSNs properties, targeted drug delivery, and controlled release with a particular emphasis on their most recent diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Single Trap States in Single CdSe Nanoplatelets

Trap states can strongly affect semiconductor nanocrystals, by quenching, delaying, and spectrally shifting the photoluminescence (PL). Trap states have proven elusive and difficult to study in detail at the ensemble level, let alone in the single-trap regime. CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit significant fractions of long-lived "delayed emission" and near-infrared "trap emission". We use these two spectroscopic handles to study trap states at the ensemble and the single-particle level. We find that reversible hole trapping leads to both delayed and trap PL, involving the same trap states. At the single-particle level, reversible trapping induces exponential delayed PL and trap PL, with lifetimes ranging from 40 to 1300 ns. In contrast with exciton PL, single-trap PL is broad and shows spectral diffusion and strictly single-photon emission. Our results highlight the large inhomogeneity of trap states, even at the single-particle level.

Unusual Spectral Diffusion of Single CuInS2 Quantum Dots Sheds Light on the Mechanism of Radiative Decay

The luminescence of CuInS₂ quantum dots (QDs) is slower and spectrally broader than that of many other types of QDs. The origin of this anomalous behavior is still under debate. Single-QD experiments could help settle this debate, but studies by different groups have yielded conflicting results. Here, we study the photophysics of single core-only CuInS₂ and core/shell CuInS₂/CdS QDs. Both types of single QDs exhibit broad PL spectra with fluctuating peak position and single-exponential photoluminescence decay with a slow but fluctuating lifetime. Spectral diffusion of CuInS₂-based QDs is qualitatively and quantitatively different from CdSe-based QDs. The differences reflect the dipole moment of the CuInS₂ excited state and hole localization on a preferred site in the QD. Our results unravel the highly dynamic photophysics of CuInS₂ QDs and highlight the power of the analysis of single-QD property fluctuations.

Sub-Bandgap Optical Modulation of Quantum Dot Blinking Statistics

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) suffer from pervasive photoluminescence intermittency that frustrates applications and correlates with irreversible photodegradation. In single-QD spectroscopies, blinking manifests as sporadic switching between ON and OFF states without a characteristic time scale, and the longstanding search for mechanisms has been recently accelerated by techniques to controllably modulate the QD environment. Here, we develop an all-optical modulation scheme and demonstrate that sub-bandgap light tuned to the stimulated emission transition perturbs the blinking statistics of individual CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs. Resonant optical modulation progressively suppresses long-duration ON events, quantified by a power-law slope that is more negative on average (Δα_ON = 0.46 ± 0.09), while OFF distributions and truncation times are unaffected. This characteristic effect is robust to choices in background subtraction and statistical analysis but supports mechanistic descriptions beyond first-order kinetics. This demonstration of all-optical perturbation of QD blinking dynamics provides an experimental avenue to disentangle the complex photophysics of photoluminescence intermittency.
