Persistent Organic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence in Cyclohexane-trans-1,2-Bisphthalimide Derivatives: The Dramatic Impact of Heterochiral vs Homochiral interactions

Enabling robust blue circularly polarized organic afterglow through self-confining isolated chiral chromophore

Creating circularly polarized organic afterglow system with elevated triplet energy levels, suppressed non-radiative transitions, and effective chirality, which are three critical prerequisites for achieving blue circularly polarized afterglow, has posed a formidable challenge. Herein, a straightforward approach is unveiled to attain blue circularly polarized afterglow materials by covalently self-confining isolated chiral chromophore within polymer matrix. The formation of robust hydrogen bonds within the polymer matrix confers a distinctly isolated and stabilized molecular state of chiral chromophores, endowing a blue emission band at 414 nm, lifetime of 3.0 s, and luminescent dissymmetry factor of ~ 10-2. Utilizing the synergistic afterglow and chirality energy transfer, full-color circularly polarized afterglow systems are endowed by doping colorful fluorescent molecules into designed blue polymers, empowering versatile applications. This work paves the way for the streamlined design of blue circularly polarized afterglow materials, expanding the horizons of circularly polarized afterglow materials into various domains.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescence of Pure Axially Chiral Bicarbazoles

Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is greatly important in a series of applications, but obtaining RTP from metal-free organic materials is still an enormous challenge due to the spin-forbidden nature of triplet excitons. Because of its electron-rich nature and easy derivatization, carbazole (Cz) is widely used to build organic RTP and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials. However, Liu et al. (Nat. Mater. 2021, 20, 175) recently demonstrated that the RTP of Cz is induced by charge traps of its isomeric impurity in commercial sources. Here, on the basis of the classical El-Sayed rule and the recently discovered intersystem crossing promotion principles (twisted structure and charge transfer), we designed and prepared highly pure (>99.9%) (R/S)-octahydro-binaphthyl-based bicarbazoles (BiCz) for high-performance RTP (Φ_P = 23%; τ_p = 1.09 s). Interestingly, BiCz exhibited photoactivated TADF and RTP in isolated and aggregated states, respectively, and thus would be an efficient tool for rejuvenating Cz-based RTP.

Luminescent Behavior of Liquid–Crystalline Gold(I) Complexes Bearing a Carbazole Moiety: Effects of Substituent Bulkiness

Organometallic materials that exhibit white luminescence in condensed phases are of considerable interest for lighting and display applications. Herein, new carbazole-based Au(I) complexes containing an isocyanide group and a long pentyl chain were synthesized. The complex with an unsubstituted carbazole moiety exhibited a white emission at room temperature as well as nematic liquid crystalline behavior. Color tunability from white to blue was achieved when bulkier substituents were introduced at the 3 and 6 positions of the carbazole moiety. Furthermore, all complexes possessed long phosphorescence lifetimes in the crystal state. The proposed design framework provides new opportunities for practical applications using luminescent organometallic molecules.

Aggregation‐Induced Dual Phosphorescence from ( o ‐Bromophenyl)‐Bis(2,6‐Dimethylphenyl)Borane at Room Temperature

Designing highly efficient purely organic phosphors at room temperature remains a challenge because of fast non‐radiative processes and slow intersystem crossing (ISC) rates. The majority of them emit only single component phosphorescence. Herein, we have prepared 3 isomers (o, m, p‐bromophenyl)‐bis(2,6‐dimethylphenyl)boranes. Among the 3 isomers (o‐, m‐ and p‐BrTAB) synthesized, the ortho‐one is the only one which shows dual phosphorescence, with a short lifetime of 0.8 ms and a long lifetime of 234 ms in the crystalline state at room temperature. Based on theoretical calculations and crystal structure analysis of o‐BrTAB, the short lifetime component is ascribed to the T₁^M state of the monomer which emits the higher energy phosphorescence. The long‐lived, lower energy phosphorescence emission is attributed to the T₁^A state of an aggregate, with multiple intermolecular interactions existing in crystalline o‐BrTAB inhibiting nonradiative decay and stabilizing the triplet states efficiently.

Single-component color-tunable circularly polarized organic afterglow through chiral clusterization

Circularly polarized organic afterglow (CPOA) with both long-lived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is currently attracting great interest, but the development of multicolor-tunable CPOA in a single-component material remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report an efficient strategy to achieve multicolor CPOA molecules through chiral clusterization by implanting chirality center into non-conjugated organic cluster. Owing to excitation-dependent emission of clusters, highly efficient and significantly tuned CPOA emissions from blue to yellowish-green with dissymmetry factor over 2.3 × 10-3 and lifetime up to 587 ms are observed under different excitation wavelengths. With the distinguished color-tunable CPOA, the multicolor CPL displays and visual RTP detection of ultraviolent light wavelength are successfully constructed. These results not only provide a new paradigm for realization of multicolor-tunable CPOA materials in single-component molecular systems, but also offer new opportunities for expanding the applicability of CPL and RTP materials for diversified applications.

Aggregation-Enhanced Room-Temperature Phosphorescence from Au(I) Complexes Bearing Mesogenic Biphenylethynyl Ligands

Gold(I) complexes, enabling to form linear coordination geometry, are promising materials for manifesting both aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior due to strong intermolecular Au-Au (aurophilic) interactions and liquid crystalline (LC) nature depending on molecular geometry. In this study, we synthesized several gold(I) complexes with rod-like molecular skeletons where we employed a mesogenic biphenylethynyl ligand and an isocyanide ligand with flexible alkoxyl or alkyl chains. The AIE behavior and LC nature were investigated experimentally and computationally. All synthesized gold(I) complexes exhibited AIE properties and, in crystal, room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with a relatively high quantum yields of greater than 23% even in air. We have demonstrated that such strong RTP are drastically changed depending on the crystal-size and/or crystal growth process that changes quality of crystals as well as the aggregate structure, of e.g., Au-Au distance. Moreover, the complex with longer flexible chains showed LC nature where RTP can be observed. We expect these rod-like gold(I) complexes to have great potential in AIE-active LC phosphorescent applications such as linearly/circularly polarizing phosphorescence materials.

Influence of Guest/Host Morphology on Room Temperature Phosphorescence Properties of Pure Organic Doped Systems

Guest/host phosphorescence materials have attracted much attention; traditionally, researchers have focused on the influence of the electronic properties and energy levels of the molecules on the phosphorescence activities. However, the effects of the morphology on the phosphorescence properties are ignored. Herein, three isoquinoline guests with different aliphatic rings and three hosts are selected to construct guest/host materials. Experimental results confirm that the guests are dispersed in the host in the form of clusters. More importantly, the morphologies of the guest/host directly affect the phosphorescence properties. In these systems, the guests have strong intermolecular interactions, which are beneficial to stabilize the triplet excitons; meanwhile, the hosts should have weak intermolecular interactions with easily changed morphology to accept the guest clusters, which synergistically ensure that the doped materials have excellent RTP properties. This is the first work focusing on the effect of molecular morphology on the phosphorescence characteristics of guest/host systems.

Optical purity, enantiomeric excess and the Horeau effect

The optical purity of an enantiomeric mixture deduced from specific rotation measurements was found by Horeau to be different from its enantiomeric excess, which came to be known as the Horeau effect. This observation had important implications in the practical use of specific rotations and has led to investigations on homochiral and heterochiral aggregation processes. In this review, dedicated to the Horeau principle, the theoretical basis for the observance of the Horeau effect and a survey of the specific rotation studies investigating the Horeau effect are provided, and possible future investigations are suggested.
