Theoretical and Spectroscopic Evidence of the Dynamic Nature of Copper Active Sites in Cu-CHA Catalysts under Selective Catalytic Reduction (NH3-SCR-NOx) Conditions

Single stranded 1D-helical Cu coordination polymer for ultra-sensitive ammonia sensing at room temperature

With the increasing demand for ammonia applications, there is a significant focus on improving NH3 detection performance at room temperature. In this study, we introduce a groundbreaking NH3 gas sensor based on Cu(I)-based coordination polymers, featuring semiconducting, single stranded 1D-helical nanowires constructed from Cu-Cl and N-methylthiourea (MTCP). The MTCP demonstrates an exceptional response to NH3 gas (>900% at 100 ppm) and superior selectivity at room temperature compared to current materials. The interaction mechanism between NH3 and the MTCP sensor is elucidated through a combination of empirical results and computational calculations, leveraging a crystal-determined structure. This reveals the formation of NH3-Cu and NH3-H3C complexes, indicative of a thermodynamically favorable reaction. Additionally, Ag-doped MTCP exhibits higher selectivity and a response over two times greater than the original MTCP, establishing it as a prominent NH3 detection system at room temperature.

Transitioning from Methanol to Olefins (MTO) toward a Tandem CO2 Hydrogenation Process: On the Role and Fate of Heteroatoms (Mg, Si) in MAPO-18 Zeotypes

The tandem CO2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons over mixed metal oxide/zeolite catalysts (OXZEO) is an efficient way of producing value-added hydrocarbons (platform chemicals and fuels) directly from CO2via methanol intermediate in a single reactor. In this contribution, two MAPO-18 zeotypes (M = Mg, Si) were tested and their performance was compared under methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conditions (350 °C, PCH3OH = 0.04 bar, 6.5 gCH3OH h-1 g-1), methanol/CO/H2 cofeed conditions (350 °C, PCH3OH/PCO/PH2 = 1:7.3:21.7 bar, 2.5 gCH3OH h-1 g-1), and tandem CO2 hydrogenation-to-olefin conditions (350 °C, PCO2/PH2 = 7.5:22.5 bar, 1.4-12.0 gMAPO-18 h molCO2-1). In the latter case, the zeotypes were mixed with a fixed amount of ZnO:ZrO2 catalyst, well-known for the conversion of CO2/H2 to methanol. Focus was set on the methanol conversion activity, product selectivity, and performance stability with time-on-stream. In situ and ex situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), sorption experiments, and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculations were performed to correlate material performance with material characteristics. The catalytic tests demonstrated the better performance of MgAPO-18 versus SAPO-18 at MTO conditions, the much superior performance of MgAPO-18 under methanol/CO/H2 cofeeds, and yet the increasingly similar performance of the two materials under tandem conditions upon increasing the zeotype-to-oxide ratio in the tandem catalyst bed. In situ FT-IR measurements coupled with AIMD calculations revealed differences in the MTO initiation mechanism between the two materials. SAPO-18 promoted initial CO2 formation, indicative of a formaldehyde-based decarboxylation mechanism, while CO and ketene were the main constituents of the initiation pool in MgAPO-18, suggesting a decarbonylation mechanism. Under tandem CO2 hydrogenation conditions, the presence of high water concentrations and low methanol partial pressure in the reaction medium led to lower, and increasingly similar, methanol turnover frequencies for the zeotypes. Despite both MAPO-18 zeotypes showing signs of activity loss upon storage due to the interaction of the sites with ambient humidity, they presented a remarkable stability after reaching steady state under tandem reaction conditions and after steaming and regeneration cycles at high temperatures. Water adsorption experiments at room temperature confirmed this observation. The faster activity loss observed in the Mg version is assigned to its harder Mg2+-ion character and the higher concentration of CHA defects in the AEI structure, identified by solid-state NMR and XRD. The low stability of a MgAPO-34 zeotype (CHA structure) upon storage corroborated the relationship between CHA defects and instability.

Effect of Framework Composition and NH3 on the Diffusion of Cu+ in Cu-CHA Catalysts Predicted by Machine-Learning Accelerated Molecular Dynamics

Cu-exchanged zeolites rely on mobile solvated Cu+ cations for their catalytic activity, but the role of the framework composition in transport is not fully understood. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations can provide quantitative atomistic insight but are too computationally expensive to explore large length and time scales or diverse compositions. We report a machine-learning interatomic potential that accurately reproduces ab initio results and effectively generalizes to allow multinanosecond simulations of large supercells and diverse chemical compositions. Biased and unbiased simulations of [Cu(NH3)2]+ mobility show that aluminum pairing in eight-membered rings accelerates local hopping and demonstrate that increased NH3 concentration enhances long-range diffusion. The probability of finding two [Cu(NH3)2]+ complexes in the same cage, which is key for SCR-NOx reaction, increases with Cu content and Al content but does not correlate with the long-range mobility of Cu+. Supporting experimental evidence was obtained from reactivity tests of Cu-CHA catalysts with a controlled chemical composition.

Prediction of Cu Zeolite NH3-SCR Activity from Variable Temperature 1H NMR Spectroscopy

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by ammonia is one of the dominant pollution abatement technologies for near-zero NOx emission diesel engines. A crucial step in the reduction of NOx to N2 with Cu zeolite NH3-SCR catalysts is the generation of a multi-electron donating active site, implying the permanent or transient dimerization of Cu ions. Cu atom mobility has been implicated by computational chemistry as a key factor in this process. This report demonstrates how variable temperature 1H NMR reveals the Cu induced generation of sharp 1H resonances associated with a low concentration of sites on the zeolite. The onset temperature of the appearance of these signals was found to strongly correlate with the NH3-SCR activity and was observed for a range of catalysts covering multiple frameworks (CHA, AEI, AFX, ERI, ERI-CHA, ERI-OFF, *BEA), with different Si/Al ratios and different Cu contents. The results point towards universal applicability of variable temperature NMR to predict the activity of a Cu-zeolite SCR catalyst. The unique relationship of a spectroscopic feature with catalytic behavior for zeolites with different structures and chemical compositions is exceptional in heterogeneous catalysis.

Revealing the Formation and Reactivity of Cage-Confined Cu Pairs in Catalytic NOx Reduction over Cu-SSZ-13 Zeolites by In Situ UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Time-Dependent DFT Calculation

The low-temperature mechanism of chabazite-type small-pore Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite, a state-of-the-art catalyst for ammonia-assisted selective reduction (NH3-SCR) of toxic NOx pollutants from heavy-duty vehicles, remains a debate and needs to be clarified for further improvement of NH3-SCR performance. In this study, we established experimental protocols to follow the dynamic redox cycling (i.e., CuII ↔ CuI) of Cu sites in Cu-SSZ-13 during low-temperature NH3-SCR catalysis by in situ ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and in situ infrared spectroscopy. Further integrating the in situ spectroscopic observations with time-dependent density functional theory calculations allows us to identify two cage-confined transient states, namely, the O2-bridged Cu dimers (i.e., μ-η2:η2-peroxodiamino dicopper) and the proximately paired, chemically nonbonded CuI(NH3)2 sites, and to confirm the CuI(NH3)2 pair as a precursor to the O2-bridged Cu dimer. Comparative transient experiments reveal a particularly high reactivity of the CuI(NH3)2 pairs for NO-to-N2 reduction at low temperatures. Our study demonstrates direct experimental evidence for the transient formation and high reactivity of proximately paired CuI sites under zeolite confinement and provides new insights into the monomeric-to-dimeric Cu transformation for completing the Cu redox cycle in low-temperature NH3-SCR catalysis over Cu-SSZ-13.

Influence of Solvent on Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides with Ammonia over Cu-CHA Zeolite

The copper-exchanged zeolite Cu-CHA has received considerable attention in recent years, owing to its application in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO_x species. Here, we study the NH₃-SCR reaction mechanism on Cu-CHA using the hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) technique and investigate the effects of solvent on the reactivity of active Cu species. To this end, a comparison is made between water- and ammonia-solvated and bare Cu species. The results show the promoting effect of solvent on the oxidation component of the NH₃-SCR cycle since the formation of important nitrate species is found to be energetically more favorable on the solvated Cu sites than in the absence of solvent molecules. Conversely, both solvent molecules are predicted to inhibit the reduction component of the NH₃-SCR cycle. Diffuse reflectance infrared fourier-transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments exploiting (concentration) modulation excitation spectroscopy (MES) and phase-sensitive detection (PSD) identified spectroscopic signatures of Cu-nitrate and Cu-nitrosamine (H₂NNO), important species which had not been previously observed experimentally. This is further supported by the QM/MM-calculated harmonic vibrational analysis. Additional insights are provided into the reactivity of solvated active sites and the formation of key intermediates including their formation energies and vibrational spectroscopic signatures, allowing the development of a detailed understanding of the reaction mechanism. We demonstrate the role of solvated active sites and their influence on the energetics of important species that must be explicitly considered for an accurate understanding of NH₃-SCR kinetics.

Enhanced Stability and Catalytic Performance of Active Rh Sites on Al2O3 Via Atomic Layer Deposited ZrO2

Modulating the Rh active sites on surfaces of Al₂O₃ is crucial to developing effective three-way catalysts. Herein, an ultralow amount of ZrO₂ (0.0179%) was deposited onto Al₂O₃ nanorods via atomic layer deposition (ALD) to form a catalyst with both thermal stability and low-temperature activity. The results demonstrate that the ALD-ZrO₂ is conducive to improve the catalytic activity of the Rh site and inhibit the formation of irreducible Rh species at high temperature. The obtained catalysts show satisfactory performance for a model NO-CO reaction even after thermal aging at 1050 °C. This strategy shows that a molecularly precise synthesis can lead to the robust promotion of Rh activity under low temperature and provide a promising path toward reducing the deactivation of catalysts at high temperature.

Influence of ion mobility on the redox and catalytic properties of Cu ions in zeolites

This contribution aims at analysing the current understanding about the influence of Al distribution, zeolite topology, ligands/reagents and oxidation state on ions mobility in Cu-zeolites, and its relevance toward reactivity of the metal sites. The concept of Cu mobilization has been originally observed in the presence of ammonia, favouring the activation of oxygen by formation of NH3 oxo-bridged complexes in zeolites and opening a new perspective about the chemistry in single-site zeolite-based catalysts, in particular in the context of the NH3-mediated Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO x (NH3-SCR) processes. A different mobility of bare Cu+/Cu2+ ions has been documented too, showing for Cu+ a better mobilization than for Cu2+ also in absence of ligands. These concepts can have important consequences for the formation of Cu-oxo species, active and selective in other relevant reactions, such as the direct conversion of methane to methanol. Here, assessing the structure, the formation pathways and reactivity of Cu-oxo mono- or multimeric moieties still represents a challenging playground for chemical scientists. Translating the knowledge about Cu ions mobility and redox properties acquired in the context of NH3-SCR reaction into the field of direct conversion of methane to methanol can have important implications for a better understanding of transition metal ions redox properties in zeolites and for an improved design of catalysts and catalytic processes.

Revealing the Synergistic Deactivation Mechanism of Hydrothermal Aging and SO2 Poisoning on Cu/SSZ-13 under SCR Condition

In real-world application, Cu/SSZ-13 simultaneously suffers severe deactivation from hydrothermal aging and SO₂ poisoning during the periodic regeneration of diesel particulate filter (DPF). Herein, we first investigated the synergistic deactivation mechanism of hydrothermal aging and SO₂ poisoning on Cu/SSZ-13 under SCR condition. Hydrothermal aging alone induces more severe degradation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) performance than SO₂ poisoning alone, while the presence of SO₂ during hydrothermal aging causes further worse SCR performance compared with hydrothermal aging alone. Hydrothermal aging not only damages Si-OH-Al sites, particularly in four-membered ring (4MR) of the CHA cage, but also brings the conversion of ZCuOH, leading to the formation of inactive CuO/CuAlO_x species. By contrast, SO₂ poisoning alone is more prone to promote the transformation of ZCuOH to Z₂Cu. Synergistic deactivation of hydrothermal aging and SO₂ poisoning would exacerbate the damage of Si-OH-Al sites and then the formation of CuO/CuAlO_x species. These results are expected to assist the knowledge-based catalyst design for diesel aftertreatment applications.

Mobility and Reactivity of Cu+ Species in Cu-CHA Catalysts under NH3-SCR-NOx Reaction Conditions: Insights from AIMD Simulations

The mobility of the copper cations acting as active sites for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia in Cu-CHA catalysts varies with temperature and feed composition. Herein, the migration of [Cu(NH₃)₂]⁺ complexes between two adjacent cavities of the chabazite structure, including other reactant molecules (NO, O₂, H₂O, and NH₃), in the initial and final cavities is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations combined with enhanced sampling techniques to describe hopping events from one cage to the other. We find that such diffusion is only significantly hindered by the presence of excess NH₃ or NO in the initial cavity, since both reactants form with [Cu(NH₃)₂]⁺ stable intermediates which are too bulky to cross the 8-ring windows connecting the cavities. The presence of O₂ modifies strongly the interaction of NO with Cu⁺. At low temperatures, we observe NO detachment from Cu⁺ and increased mobility of the [Cu(NH₃)₂]⁺ complex, while at high temperatures, NO reacts spontaneously with O₂ to form NO₂. The present simulations give evidence for recent experimental observations, namely, an NH₃ inhibition effect on the SCR reaction at low temperatures, and transport limitations of NO and NH₃ at high temperatures. Our first principle simulations mimicking operating conditions support the existence of two different reaction mechanisms operating at low and high temperatures, the former involving dimeric Cu(NH₃)₂-O₂-Cu(NH₃)₂ species and the latter occurring by direct NO oxidation to NO₂ in one single cavity.

Mobility of Cu Ions in Cu-SSZ-13 Determines the Reactivity of Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Selective catalytic reduction of NO_x with NH₃ (NH₃-SCR) in Cu-SSZ-13 has been proposed to have a unique homogeneous-like mechanism governed by the spatial proximity of mobile Cu ions. Among factors that determine the proximity, the effect of ion density on the SCR reaction is well established; however, it has not been verified how the different mobility of the Cu ion influences the SCR reaction. Herein, we try to reveal the mobility-dependent SCR reaction by controlling the Cu species with different ion mobilities in Cu-SSZ-13. Since the reaction kinetics is governed by the diffusion of Cu ions, the Cu ion mobility determines the reactivity of the Cu-SSZ-13. In terms of this correlation, enhanced ion mobility leads to improved NH₃-SCR activity. These findings help understand the behavior of Cu ions in Cu-SSZ-13 under a catalytic reaction and provide insights to design rational catalysts by tuning the ion mobility.

Zeolites at the Molecular Level: What Can Be Learned from Molecular Modeling

This review puts the development of molecular modeling methods in the context of their applications to zeolitic active sites. We attempt to highlight the utmost necessity of close cooperation between theory and experiment, resulting both in advances in computational methods and in progress in experimental techniques.

Understanding the nature of NH3-coordinated active sites and the complete reaction schemes for NH3-SCR using Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts

Cu-SAPO-34 zeolite catalysts show excellent NH3-SCR performance at low temperature, which is due to the catalytic capacity of copper species. Isolated CuII ions and CuIIOH are active sites, but their nature and role are not fully understood. This paper reports the DFT calculations in combination with ab initio thermodynamics to investigate NH3 and H2O coordination to copper species under typical NH3-SCR reaction conditions. In the reduction part of the NH3-SCR reaction, NH2NO and NH4NO2 intermediates will form on CuII-2NH3/3NH3 and CuIIOH-2NH3 complexes, respectively. The Brønsted acid sites are crucial for the decomposition of these intermediates, rather than copper species. Furthermore, the decomposition of NH2NO is more energetically favorable than NH4NO2 which are formed on the Brønsted acid sites. In the re-oxidation part of the NH3-SCR reaction, O2 dissociation and NO2 formation occur on CuI-2NH3 complexes in the presence of NO, and the regeneration of CuIIOH-2NH3 requires the participation of H2O. The proposed complete mechanisms highlight the importance of ligand coordinated copper species for intermediate formation and O2 activation in NH3-SCR.
