Molecular Design Strategy for Simultaneously Strong Luminescence and High Mobility: Multichannel CH-π Interaction

Four Slip-Stacked Arrangements, Three Types of Photophysics: Crystal Structure and Solid-State Fluorescence of 3,6-Diaryl Substituted Furo[3,4-c]furanone Polymorphs and Regioisomers

Six symmetrical 3,6-diaryl (aryl=phenyl, 2-, 3- and 4-tolyl, 2,4- and 3,5-xylyl) substituted furo[3,4-c]furanones (DFF) were synthesized. The computational analysis, based on density functional theory, found eight possible centrosymmetrical slipped π-stack arrangements, formed according to electron repulsion minimization principle, as for previously reported for π-isoelectronic diketopyrrolopyrroles (DPP). One of these slipped stack arrangements was found to form infinite columns in the crystals of a new polymorph of parent phenyl derivative (with centre-to-centre distance CC=6.975 Å), other three types of stacks were found for 3-tolyl (CC=6.153 Å), 4-tolyl (CC=3.849 Å) and 2,4-xylyl (CC=4.856 Å) derivatives by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. All six derivatives show intense solution fluorescence in blue/green region, with a maximum driven entirely by a number and position of methyl substituents on phenyl rings. On the other hand, the solid-state fluorescence from yellow over orange to red is observed only for four derivatives and its presence/absence, spectral position and vibronic structure is driven exclusively by the slips in π-stacks (with interplanar distance always less than 3.5 Å) of almost planar DFF molecules, resulting in J-type emission, H-type excimer-like emission and H-type quenching.

An Anthracene-Based Bis-Stilbene Derivative as Luminescent Materials for Organic Light Emitting Diodes

In this work, a new luminescent material of a small-molecule stilbene derivative (BABCz) containing anthracene was designed and synthesized by three simple reactions. The material was characterized by ¹H-NMR, FTMS, and X-ray and tested using TGA, DSC, UV/Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The results demonstrate that BABCz has luminescence properties with good thermal stability and can be doped with 4,4'-bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (CBP) to prepare highly uniform films, which allows the fabrication of OLED devices with ITO/Cs₂CO₃:BABCz/CBP:BABCz/MoO₃/Al configuration. This simplest device in the sandwich structure emits green light at 6.6-12 V and has a brightness of 2300 cd/m², indicating the potential of this material in OLED manufacturing.

Recent advances in n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors and their multi-functional applications

Organic semiconductors have received broad attention and research interest due to their unique integration of semiconducting properties with structural tunability, intrinsic flexibiltiy and low cost. In order to meet the requirements of organic electronic devices and their integrated circuits, p-type, n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors are all necessary. However, due to the limitation in both material synthesis and device fabrication, the development of n-type and ambipolar materials is quite behind that of p-type materials. Recent development in synthetic methods of organic semiconductors greatly enriches the range of n-type and ambipolar materials. Moreover, the newly developed materials with multiple functions also put forward multi-functional device applications, including some emerging research areas. In this review, we give a timely summary on these impressive advances in n-type and ambipolar organic semiconductors with a special focus on their synthesis methods and advanced materials with enhanced properties of charge carrier mobility, integration of high mobility and strong emission and thermoelectric properties. Finally, multi-functional device applications are further demonstrated as an example of these developed n-type and ambipolar materials.

High-Performance Organic Laser Semiconductor Enabling Efficient Light-Emitting Transistors and Low-Threshold Microcavity Lasers

An organic light-emitting transistor (OLET) is a candidate device architecture for developing electrically pumped organic solid-state lasers, but it remains a critical challenge because of the lack of organic semiconductors that simultaneously possess a high solid-state emission efficiency (Φ_s), a high and balanced ambipolar mobility (μ_h,e), and a large stimulated emission cross-section. Here, we designed a molecule of 4,4'-bis(2-dibenzothiophenyl-vinyl)-biphenyl (DBTVB) and prepared its ultrathin single-crystal microplates with herringbone packing arrangements, which achieve balanced mobilities of μ_h = 3.55 ± 0.5 and μ_e = 2.37 ± 0.5 cm² V^-1 s^-1, a high Φ_s of 85 ± 3%, and striking low-threshold laser characteristics. Theoretical and experimental investigations reveal that a strong electronic coupling and a small reorganization energy ensure efficient charge transport; meanwhile, the exciton-vibration effect and negligible π-π orbital overlap give rise to highly emissive H-aggregates and facilitate laser emission. Furthermore, OLET-based DBTVB crystals offer an internal quantum efficiency approaching 100% and a record-high electroluminescence external quantum efficiency of 4.03%.

Integrating Unexpected High Charge-Carrier Mobility and Low-Threshold Lasing Action in an Organic Semiconductor

Integrating high charge-carrier mobility and low-threshold lasing action in an organic semiconductor is crucial for the realization of an electrically pumped laser, but remains a great challenge. Herein, we present an organic semiconductor, named as 2,7-di(2-naphthyl)-9H-fluorene (LD-2), which shows an unexpected high charge-carrier mobility of 2.7 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 and low-threshold lasing characteristic of 9.43 μJ cm^-2 and 9.93 μJ cm^-2 and high-quality factor (Q) of 2131 and 1684 at emission peaks of 420 and 443 nm, respectively. Detailed theoretical calculations and photophysical data analysis demonstrate that a large intermolecular transfer integral of 10.36-45.16 meV together with a fast radiative transition rate of 8.0×10⁸  s^-1 are responsible for the achievement of the superior integrated optoelectronic properties in the LD-2 crystal. These optoelectronic performances of LD-2 are among the highest reported low-threshold lasing organic semiconductors with efficient charge transport, suggesting its promise for research of electrically pumped organic lasers (EPOLs).

Eight-Fold Interpenetrating Diamondoid Coordination Polymers for Sensing Volatile Organic Compounds and Metal Ions

Reactions of divalent metal salts with 4,4-oxybis(N-(pyridine-4-yl)-benzamide), L, and naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (1,4-H₂NDC) in various solvents gave [Zn(L)(1,4-NDC)·H₂O]_n, 1, [Cd(L)(1,4-NDC)(H₂O)·MeOH]_n, 2, and [Co(L)(1,4-NDC)(H₂O)_0.5·MeOH]_n, 3, which have been structurally characterized. Complexes 1–3 show eight-fold interpenetrating frameworks with the dia topology, which exhibit porosities substantiated by CO₂ adsorption, whereas 1 and 2 manifest stability in aqueous environments and show high selectivity toward sensing of mesitylene molecules and Fe³⁺ ions with low detection limits and good reusability up to five cycles.
