Photocurrent-Detected 2D Electronic Spectroscopy Reveals Ultrafast Hole Transfer in Operating PM6/Y6 Organic Solar Cells

Photoelectrochemical Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy (PEC2DES) of Photosystem I: Charge Separation Dynamics Hidden in a Multichromophoric Landscape

We present a nonlinear spectroelectrochemical technique to investigate photosynthetic protein complexes. The PEC2DES setup combines photoelectrochemical detection (PEC) that selectively probes the protein photogenerated charges output with two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) excitation that spreads the nonlinear optical response of the system in an excitation-detection map. PEC allows us to distinguish the contribution of charge separation (CS) from other de-excitation pathways, whereas 2DES allows us to disentangle congested spectral bands and evaluate the exciton dynamics (decays and coherences) of the photosystem complex. We have developed in operando phase-modulated 2DES by measuring the photoelectrochemical reaction rate in a biohybrid electrode functionalized with a plant photosystem complex I-light harvesting complex I (PSI-LHCI) layer. Optimizing the photoelectrochemical current signal yields reliable linear spectra unequivocally associated with PSI-LHCI. The 2DES signal is validated by nonlinear features like the characteristic vibrational coherence at 750 cm-1. However, no energy transfer dynamics is observed within the 450 fs experimental window. These intriguing results are discussed in the context of incoherent mixing resulting in reduced nonlinear contrast for multichromophoric complexes, such as the 160 chlorophyll PSI. The presented PEC2DES method identifies generated charges unlike purely optical 2DES and opens the way to probe the CS channel in multichromophoric complexes.

Fisher information for smart sampling in time-domain spectroscopy

Time-domain spectroscopy encompasses a wide range of techniques, such as Fourier-transform infrared, pump-probe, Fourier-transform Raman, and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopies. These methods enable various applications, such as molecule characterization, excited state dynamics studies, or spectral classification. Typically, these techniques rarely use sampling schemes that exploit the prior knowledge scientists typically have before the actual experiment. Indeed, not all sampling coordinates carry the same amount of information, and a careful selection of the sampling points may notably affect the resulting performance. In this work, we rationalize, with examples, the various advantages of using an optimal sampling scheme tailored to the specific experimental characteristics and/or expected results. We show that using a sampling scheme optimizing the Fisher information minimizes the variance of the desired parameters. This can greatly improve, for example, spectral classifications and multidimensional spectroscopy. We demonstrate how smart sampling may reduce the acquisition time of an experiment by one to two orders of magnitude, while still providing a similar level of information.

Coherent Vibrations Promote Charge-Transfer across a Graphene-Based Interface

Discerning the impact of the coherent motion of the nuclei on the timing and efficiency of charge transfer at the donor-acceptor interface is essential for designing performance-enhanced optoelectronic devices. Here, we employ an experimental approach using photocurrent detection in coherent multidimensional spectroscopy to excite a donor aromatic macrocycle and collect the charge transferred to a 2D acceptor layer. For this purpose, we prepared a cobalt phthalocyanine-graphene (CoPc-Gr) interface. Unlike blends, the well-ordered architecture achieved through the physical separation of the two layers allows us to unambiguously collect the electrical signal from graphene alone and associate it with a microscopic understanding of the whole process. The CoPc-Gr interface exhibits an ultrafast electron-transfer signal, stemming from an interlayer mechanism. Remarkably, the signal presents an oscillating time evolution modulated by coherent vibrations originating from the laser-excited CoPc states. By performing Fourier analysis on the beatings and correlating it with the Raman features, along with a comprehensive first-principles characterization of the vibrational coupling in the CoPc excited states, we successfully identify both the orbitals and molecular vibrations that promote the charge transfer at the interface.

All-Atom Photoinduced Charge Transfer Dynamics in Condensed Phase via Multistate Nonlinear-Response Instantaneous Marcus Theory

Photoinduced charge transfer (CT) in the condensed phase is an essential component in solar energy conversion, but it is challenging to simulate such a process on the all-atom level. The traditional Marcus theory has been utilized for obtaining CT rate constants between pairs of electronic states but cannot account for the nonequilibrium effects due to the initial nuclear preparation. The recently proposed instantaneous Marcus theory (IMT) and its nonlinear-response formulation allow for incorporating the nonequilibrium nuclear relaxation to electronic transition between two states after the photoexcitation from the equilibrium ground state and provide the time-dependent rate coefficient. In this work, we extend the nonlinear-response IMT method for treating photoinduced CT among general multiple electronic states and demonstrate it in the organic photovoltaic carotenoid-porphyrin-fullerene triad dissolved in explicit tetrahydrofuran solvent. All-atom molecular dynamics simulations were employed to obtain the time correlation functions of energy gaps, which were used to generate the IMT-required time-dependent averages and variances of the relevant energy gaps. Our calculations show that the multistate IMT could capture the significant nonequilibrium effects due to the initial nuclear state preparation, and this is corroborated by the substantial differences between the population dynamics predicted by the multistate IMT and the Marcus theory, where the Marcus theory underestimates the population transfer. The population dynamics by multistate IMT is also shown to have a better agreement with the all-atom nonadiabatic mapping dynamics than the Marcus theory does. Because the multistate nonlinear-response IMT is straightforward and cost-effective in implementation and accounts for the nonequilibrium nuclear effects, we believe this method offers a practical strategy for studying charge transfer dynamics in complex condensed-phase systems.

Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy of Molecular Assemblies: What Is Gained and Lost in Action Detection?

This study elucidates the information content that is extracted from action-2D electronic spectroscopy (A-2DES) when the output intensity is not proportional to the number of excitations generated. Such a scenario can be realized in both fluorescence and photocurrent detection because of direct interaction like exciton-exciton annihilation or indirect effects in the signal generation or detection. By means of an intuitive probabilistic model supported by nonlinear response theory, the study concludes that in molecular assemblies the ground-state bleaching contribution can dominate the nonlinear signal and partially or completely hide the stimulated emission. In this case, the spectral effect resembles incoherent mixing, even in the absence of exciton-exciton annihilation, implying reduced information about the excited-state dynamics with an increasing number of chromophores. This finding has important implications for the selection of samples for A-2DES as well as for its interpretation.

Multimode vibrational dynamics and orientational effects in fluorescence-encoded infrared spectroscopy. I. Response function theory

Fluorescence-encoded infrared (FEIR) spectroscopy is an emerging technique for performing vibrational spectroscopy in solution with detection sensitivity down to single molecules. FEIR experiments use ultrashort pulses to excite a fluorescent molecule's vibrational and electronic transitions in a sequential, time-resolved manner, and are therefore sensitive to intervening vibrational dynamics on the ground state, vibronic coupling, and the relative orientation of vibrational and electronic transition dipole moments. This series of papers presents a theoretical treatment of FEIR spectroscopy that describes these phenomena and examines their manifestation in experimental data. This first paper develops a nonlinear response function description of Fourier-transform FEIR experiments for a two-level electronic system coupled to multiple vibrations, which is then applied to interpret experimental measurements in the second paper [L. Whaley-Mayda et al., J. Chem. Phys. 159, 194202 (2023)]. Vibrational coherence between pairs of modes produce oscillatory features that interfere with the vibrations' population response in a manner dependent on the relative signs of their respective Franck-Condon wavefunction overlaps, leading to time-dependent distortions in FEIR spectra. The orientational response of population and coherence contributions are analyzed and the ability of polarization-dependent experiments to extract relative transition dipole angles is discussed. Overall, this work presents a framework for understanding the full spectroscopic information content of FEIR measurements to aid data interpretation and inform optimal experimental design.

Pulse-Induced Dynamics of a Charge-Transfer Complex from First Principles

The ultrafast dynamics of charge carriers in organic donor-acceptor interfaces are of primary importance to understanding the fundamental properties of these systems. In this work, we focus on a charge-transfer complex formed by quaterthiophene p-doped by tetrafluoro-tetracyanoquinodimethane and investigate electron dynamics and vibronic interactions also at finite temperatures by applying a femtosecond pulse in resonance with the two lowest energy excitations of the system with perpendicular and parallel polarization with respect to the interface. The adopted ab initio formalism based on real-time time-dependent density-functional theory coupled to Ehrenfest dynamics enables monitoring the dynamical charge transfer across the interface and assessing the role played by the nuclear motion. Our results show that the strong intermolecular interactions binding the complex already in the ground state influence the dynamics, too. The analysis of the nuclear motion involved in these processes reveals the participation of different vibrational modes depending on the electronic states stimulated by the resonant pulse. Coupled donor-acceptor modes mostly influence the excited state polarized across the interface, while intramolecular vibrations in the donor molecule dominate the excitation in the orthogonal direction. The results obtained at finite temperatures are overall consistent with this picture, although thermal disorder contributes to slightly decreasing interfacial charge transfer.

Measuring carrier diffusion in MAPbI3 solar cells with photocurrent-detected transient grating spectroscopy

Conventional time-of-flight methods can be used to determine carrier mobilities for photovoltaic cells in which the transit time between electrodes is greater than the RC time constant of the device. To measure carrier drift on sub-ns timescales, we have recently developed a two-pulse time-of-flight technique capable of detecting drift velocities with 100-ps time resolution in perovskite materials. In this method, the rates of carrier transit across the active layer of a device are determined by varying the delay time between laser pulses and measuring the magnitude of the recombination-induced nonlinearity in the photocurrent. Here, we present a related experimental approach in which diffractive optic-based transient grating spectroscopy is combined with our two-pulse time-of-flight technique to simultaneously probe drift and diffusion in orthogonal directions within the active layer of a photovoltaic cell. Carrier density gratings are generated using two time-coincident pulse-pairs with passively stabilized phases. Relaxation of the grating amplitude associated with the first pulse-pair is detected by varying the delay and phase of the density grating corresponding to the second pulse-pair. The ability of the technique to reveal carrier diffusion is demonstrated with model calculations and experiments conducted using MAPbI3 photovoltaic cells.

Higher-Order Multidimensional and Pump-Probe Spectroscopies

Transient absorption and coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy are widely established methods for the investigation of ultrafast dynamics in quantum systems. Conventionally, they are interpreted in the framework of perturbation theory at the third order of interaction. Here, we discuss the potential of higher-(than-third-)order pump-probe and multidimensional spectroscopy to provide insight into excited multiparticle states and their dynamics. We focus on recent developments from our group. In particular, we demonstrate how phase cycling can be used in fluorescence-detected two-dimensional spectroscopy to isolate higher-order spectra that provide information about highly excited states such as the correlation of multiexciton states. We discuss coherently detected fifth-order 2D spectroscopy and its power to track exciton diffusion. Finally, we show how to extract higher-order signals even from ordinary pump-probe experiments, providing annihilation-free signals at high excitation densities and insight into multiexciton interactions.

Unifying Nonlinear Response and Incoherent Mixing in Action-2D Electronic Spectroscopy

Action-detection has expanded the scope and applicability of 2D electronic spectroscopy, while posing new challenges for the unambiguous interpretation of spectral features. In this context, identifying the origin of cross-peaks at early waiting times is not trivial, and incoherent mixing is often invoked as an unwanted contribution masking the nonlinear signal. In this work, we elaborate on the relation between the nonlinear response and the incoherent mixing contribution by analyzing the action signal in terms of one- and two-particle observables. Considering a weakly interacting molecular dimer, we show how cross-peaks at early waiting times, reflecting exciton-exciton annihilation dynamics, can be equivalently interpreted as arising from incoherent mixing. This equivalence, on the one hand, highlights the information content of spectral features related to incoherent mixing and, on the other hand, provides an efficient numerical scheme to simulate the action response of weakly interacting systems.

Time-Frequency Signatures of Electronic Coherence of Colloidal CdSe Quantum Dot Dimer Assemblies Probed at Room Temperature by Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

Electronic coherence signatures can be directly identified in the time-frequency maps measured in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). Here, we demonstrate the theory and discuss the advantages of this approach via the detailed application to the fast-femtosecond beatings of a wide variety of electronic coherences in ensemble dimers of quantum dots (QDs), assembled from QDs of 3 nm in diameter, with 8% size dispersion in diameter. The observed and computed results can be consistently characterized directly in the time-frequency domain by probing the polarization in the 2DES setup. The experimental and computed time-frequency maps are found in very good agreement, and several electronic coherences are characterized at room temperature in solution, before the extensive dephasing due to the size dispersion begins. As compared to the frequency-frequency maps that are commonly used in 2DES, the time-frequency maps allow exploiting electronic coherences without additional post-processing and with fewer 2DES measurements. Towards quantum technology applications, we also report on the modeling of the time-frequency photocurrent response of these electronic coherences, which paves the way to integrating QD devices with classical architectures, thereby enhancing the quantum advantage of such technologies for parallel information processing at room temperature.

A quantum information processing machine for computing by observables

A quantum machine that accepts an input and processes it in parallel is described. The logic variables of the machine are not wavefunctions (qubits) but observables (i.e., operators) and its operation is described in the Heisenberg picture. The active core is a solid-state assembly of small nanosized colloidal quantum dots (QDs) or dimers of dots. The size dispersion of the QDs that causes fluctuations in their discrete electronic energies is a limiting factor. The input to the machine is provided by a train of very brief laser pulses, at least four in number. The coherent band width of each ultrashort pulse needs to span at least several and preferably all the single electron excited states of the dots. The spectrum of the QD assembly is measured as a function of the time delays between the input laser pulses. The dependence of the spectrum on the time delays can be Fourier transformed to a frequency spectrum. This spectrum of a finite range in time is made up of discrete pixels. These are the visible, raw, basic logic variables. The spectrum is analyzed to determine a possibly smaller number of principal components. A Lie-algebraic point of view is used to explore the use of the machine to emulate the dynamics of other quantum systems. An explicit example demonstrates the considerable quantum advantage of our scheme.

Spatiotemporal Mapping Uncouples Exciton Diffusion from Singlet-Singlet Annihilation in the Electron Acceptor Y6

Understanding the spatial dynamics of nanoscale exciton transport beyond the temporal decay is essential for further improvements of nanostructured optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells. The diffusion coefficient (D) of the nonfullerene electron acceptor Y6 has so far only been determined indirectly, from singlet-singlet annihilation (SSA) experiments. Here, we present the full picture of the exciton dynamics, adding the spatial domain to the temporal one, by spatiotemporally resolved photoluminescence microscopy. In this way, we directly track diffusion and we are able to decouple the real spatial broadening from its overestimation given by SSA. We measured the diffusion coefficient, D = 0.017 ± 0.003 cm²/s, which gives a Y6 film diffusion length of L=Dτ≈35 nm. Thus, we provide an essential tool that enables a direct and free-of-artifacts determination of diffusion coefficients, which we expect to be pivotal for further studies on exciton dynamics in energy materials.

Picosecond Charge-Transfer-State Dynamics in Wide Band Gap Polymer-Non-Fullerene Small-Molecule Blend Films Investigated via Transient Infrared Spectroscopy

Organic solar cells based on wide band gap polymers and nonfullerene small-molecule acceptors have demonstrated remarkably good device performances. Nevertheless, a thorough understanding of the charge-transfer process in these materials has not been achieved yet. In this study, we use Fano resonance signals caused by the interaction of broad electronic charge carrier absorption and the molecular vibrations of the electron acceptor molecule to monitor the charge-transfer state dynamics. In our time-resolved infrared spectroscopy experiments, we find that in the small-molecule acceptor, they have additional dynamics on the order of a few picoseconds. A change in the solvent used in thin film deposition, leading to different morphologies, influences this time further. We interpret our findings as the dynamics of the charge-transfer state at the interface of the electron donor and the electron- acceptor. The additional mid-infrared transient signal is generated in this state, as both electron and hole polarons can interact with small-molecule acceptor vibrational modes.

Probing drift velocity dispersion in MAPbI3 photovoltaic cells with nonlinear photocurrent spectroscopy

Conventional time-of-flight (TOF) measurements yield charge carrier mobilities in photovoltaic cells with time resolution limited by the RC time constant of the device, which is on the order of 0.1–1 µs for the systems targeted in the present work. We have recently developed an alternate TOF method, termed nonlinear photocurrent spectroscopy (NLPC), in which carrier drift velocities are determined with picosecond time resolution by applying a pair of laser pulses to a device with an experimentally controlled delay time. In this technique, carriers photoexcited by the first laser pulse are “probed” by way of recombination processes involving carriers associated with the second laser pulse. Here, we report NLPC measurements conducted with a simplified experimental apparatus in which synchronized 40 ps diode lasers enable delay times up to 100 µs at 5 kHz repetition rates. Carrier mobilities of ∼0.025 cm2/V/s are determined for MAPbI3 photovoltaic cells with active layer thicknesses of 240 and 460 nm using this instrument. Our experiments and model calculations suggest that the nonlinear response of the photocurrent weakens as the carrier densities photoexcited by the first laser pulse trap and broaden while traversing the active layer of a device. Based on this aspect of the signal generation mechanism, experiments conducted with co-propagating and counter-propagating laser beam geometries are leveraged to determine a 60 nm length scale of drift velocity dispersion in MAPbI3 films. Contributions from localized states induced by thermal fluctuations are consistent with drift velocity dispersion on this length scale.

Binding Energy of Triplet Excitons in Nonfullerene Acceptors: The Effects of Fluorination and Chlorination

One strategy to improve the photovoltaic properties of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs), employed in state-of-art organic solar cells, is the rational fluorination or chlorination of these molecules. Although this modification improves important acceptor properties, little is known about the effects on the triplet states. Here, we combine the polarizable continuum model with an optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functional to investigate this issue. We find that fluorination or chlorination of NFAs decreases the degree of the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) overlap along these molecules. Consequently, the energy gap between T₁ and S₁ states, ΔE_ST = E_S1 - E_T1, also decreases. This effect reduces the binding energy of triplet excitons, which favors their dissociation into free charges. Furthermore, the reduction of ΔE_ST can contribute to mitigating the losses produced by the nonradiative deactivation of the T₁ excitons. Interestingly, although Cl has a lower electronegativity than F, chlorination is more effective to reduce ΔE_ST. Since the chlorination of NFAs is easier than fluorination, Cl substitution can be a useful approach to enhance solar energy harvesting using triplet excitons.

High-Performance Near-Infrared Photodetectors Based on the Synergy Effect of Short Wavelength Light Filter and Long Wavelength Response of a Perovskite/Polymer Hybrid Structure

Near-infrared photodetectors (NIR-PDs) are widely used in communications, biomedical imaging, and national defense. Here we report a new strategy to prepare a short wavelength light filter based NIR-PDs by introducing an interface layer between the perovskite layer and the polymer layer to achieve the selective passage of carriers. Through the synergistic effect of the perovskite and the interface layer, the short wavelength light component in the signal spectrum is effectively filtered out. The organic polymer layer with a bulk heterojunction structure is applied to realize the absorption and conversion of near-infrared light. The prepared device achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency of 83.7% without bias, a high specific detectivity of 1.52 × 10¹³ Jones, an NIR responsivity of 0.577A/W, and a short response time of 1.73/0.97 μs within the detection range from 770 to 900 nm. All these properties show great advantages compared with other perovskite/polymer hybrid NIR photodetectors that have been reported. This innovative strategy provides a new way to prepare high-performance near-infrared photodetectors.

Ultrafast Structure and Vibrational Dynamics of a Cyano-Containing Non-Fullerene Acceptor for Organic Solar Cells Revealed by Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectroscopy

Non-fullerene molecules, such as ITIC (3,9-bis(2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene) indanone)-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)dithieno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']-dithiophene), are among the most promising non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells (OSCs). In this work, using the cyano stretching mode as a vibrational marker, the structural and vibrational energy dynamics of ITIC were examined on an ultrafast time scale with two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy. Two IR-active modes studied here mainly correspond to two anti-symmetric combinations of symmetric and asymmetric stretching vibrations of two C≡N modes originating from two -C(CN)₂ chromophores that are located across the ITIC system, which were found to have significantly larger off-diagonal anharmonicity than their corresponding diagonal anharmonicities. This indicates strong anharmonic vibrational coupling between the two modes, which is supported by ab initio anharmonic frequency computations. Transient IR results indicate picosecond intramolecular vibrational energy transfer between the two C≡N modes upon excitation. The structural basis for these vibrational and energetic features is the conjugating molecular frame that is composed of a network of single/double bonds connecting the two -C(CN)₂ chromophores and may enable efficient vibration delocalization, in addition to its well-known electron delocalization capability. The importance of the results for the OSC applications is discussed.

2D Electronic Spectroscopic Techniques for Quantum Technology Applications

2D electronic spectroscopy (2DES) techniques have gained particular interest given their capability of following ultrafast coherent and noncoherent processes in real-time. Although the fame of 2DES is still majorly linked to the investigation of energy and charge transport in biological light-harvesting complexes, 2DES is now starting to be recognized as a particularly valuable tool for studying transport processes in artificial nanomaterials and nanodevices. Particularly meaningful is the possibility of assessing coherent mechanisms active in the transport of excitation energy in these materials toward possible quantum technology applications. The diverse nature of these new target samples poses significant challenges and calls for a critical rethinking of the technique and its different realizations. With the confluence of promising new applications and rapidly developing technical capabilities, the enormous potential of 2DES techniques to impact the field of nanosystems, quantum technologies, and quantum devices is here delineated.
