Orbital Design of Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Peroxide Kagome Crystals with Anionogenic Dirac Half-Metallicity

Turning Nonmagnetic Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Disulfides into Room-Temperature Ferromagnets by the Synergistic Effect of Lattice Stretching and Charge Injection

Exploring two-dimensional (2D) room-temperature magnetic materials in the field of 2D spintronics remains a formidable challenge. The vast array of nonmagnetic 2D materials provides abundant resources for exploration, but the strategy to convert them into intrinsic room-temperature magnets remains elusive. To address this challenge, we present a general strategy based on surface halogenation for the transition from nonmagnetism to intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in 2D MoS2 based on first-principles calculations. The derived 2D halogenated MoS2 are half-semimetals with a high Curie temperature (TC) of 430-589 K and excellent stability. In-depth mechanistic studies revealed that this marvelous nonmagnetism-to-ferromagnetism transition originates from the modulation of the splitting as well as the occupation of the Mo d orbitals by the synergy of lattice stretching and charge injection induced by the surface halogenation. This work establishes a promising route for exploring 2D room-temperature magnetic materials from the abundant pool of 2D nonmagnetic counterparts.

Improving the magnetic moment of Ca2Ge and promoting the conversion of semiconductors to diluted magnetic semiconductors using Mn-doping

The dilute magnetic properties of materials have important potential applications in the field of electronic science and technology. Intrinsic Ca2Ge is a new environmentally friendly semiconductor material, and exhibits cubic and orthorhombic phases. The crystal structure characteristics of Ca2Ge indicate that the modulation of its dilute magnetic properties can theoretically be achieved by doping with magnetic elements. The study of band structures shows that Ca2Ge is a semiconductor, while Mn doped Ca2Ge is a semi-metal. The results of density of states and atomic population analysis show that Mn doped Ca2Ge exhibits ferrimagnetism with a magnetic moment of 5 μB, and the orbital splitting energy of the Mn atom is 1.0 eV. Mn-doping changes the cubic crystal field of Ca2Ge, and the charge transfer and electron polarization of Ca d and Ge p orbitals are affected by Mn atoms. The Ca d orbital is split into dzz, dzy, dzx, dxx-yy and dxy orbitals, and the contribution of spin of each d split orbital to the magnetic moment of the Ca d orbital is in the order dxy > dyz > dxz > dxx-yy > dzz. The Ge p orbital is split into px, py and pz orbitals, and the spin contribution of each p orbital to the magnetic moment of the Ge p orbital is in the order py > pz > px. The analysis of atom populations shows that the charge transfer and spin of Ca and Ge change with Mn doping, and the difference between spin up and spin down increases, improving the magnetism of Ca2Ge and forming a dilute magnetic semiconductor.

Quintuple Function Integration in Two-Dimensional Cr(II) Five-Membered Heterocyclic Metal Organic Frameworks via Tuning Ligand Spin and Lattice Symmetry

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors (SCs) integrated with two or more functions are the cornerstone for constructing multifunctional nanodevices but remain largely limited. Here, by tuning the spin state of organic linkers and the symmetry/topology of crystal lattices, we predict a class of unprecedented multifunctional SCs in 2D Cr(II) five-membered heterocyclic metal organic frameworks that simultaneously possess auxetic effect, room-temperature ferrimagnetism, chiral ferroelectricity (FE), electrically reversible spin polarization, and topological nodal lines/points. Taking 2D Cr(TDZ)₂ (TDZ = 1.2.5-thiadiazole) as an exemplification, the auxetic effect is produced by the antitetra-chiral lattice structure. The high temperature ferrimagnetism originates from the strong d-p direct magnetic exchange interaction between Cr cations and TDZ doublet radical anions. Meanwhile, the clockwise-counterclockwise alignment of TDZ's dipoles results in unique 2D chiral FE with atomic-scale vortex-antivortex states. 2D Cr(TDZ)₂ is an intrinsic bipolar magnetic SC where half-metallic conduction with switchable spin-polarization direction can be induced by applying a gate voltage. In addition, the symmetry of the little group C₄ of the lattice structure endows 2D Cr(TDZ)₂ with topological nodal lines and a quadratic nodal point in the Brillouin zone near the Fermi level.
