Core-Shell-Structured Carbon Nanotube@VS4 Nanonecklaces as a High-Performance Cathode Material for Magnesium-Ion Batteries

An integrated electrode material based on corn straw cellulose biochar with three-dimensional network porous structure for boosting electrochemical performance of lithium batteries

In this work an integrated electrode material based on the VS4 nanoparticles grow on three-dimensional network porous biochar is put forward, forming a heterostructure that significantly boost the rate and cycle performance in lithium batteries. Biochar derives from two-steps treatment removing partial cellulose and hemicellulose, possessing three-dimensional network porous structure and naturally nitrogenous. The integrated electrode material constructs the continuous electrons transfer network, accommodates the volume expansion and traps the polar polysulfides efficiently. After 100 cycles at 1C, the integrated electrode with biochar shows the highest specific discharge capacity. Even at 2C, the three-dimensional electrode can display a high specific discharge capacity of 798.6 mAh·g-1. Thus, our study has pointed the innovations approach of constructing integrated electrode materials with porous structure biochar to enhance the electrochemical performance of lithium batteries.

Organic Molecular Intercalation Enabled Anionic Redox Chemistry with Fast Kinetics for High Performance Magnesium Storage

Rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries possess desirable characteristics in large-scale energy storage applications. However, severe polarization, sluggish kinetics and structural instability caused by high charge density Mg2+ hinder the development of high-performance cathode materials. Herein, the anionic redox chemistry in VS4 is successfully activated by inducing cations reduction and introducing anionic vacancies via polyacrylonitrile (PAN) intercalation. Increased interlayer spacing and structural vacancies can promote the electrolyte ions migration and accelerate the reaction kinetics. Thanks to this "three birds with one stone" strategy, PAN intercalated VS4 exhibits an outstanding electrochemical performance: high discharge specific capacity of 187.2 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 after stabilization and a long lifespan of 5000 cycles at 2 A g-1 are achieved, outperforming other reported VS4-based materials to date for magnesium storage under the APC electrolyte. Theoretical calculations confirm that the intercalated PAN can indeed induce cations reduction and generate anionic vacancies by promoting electron transfer, which can accelerate the electrochemical reaction kinetics and activate the anionic redox chemistry, thus improving the magnesium storage performance. This approach of organic molecular intercalation represents a promising guideline for electrode material design on the development of advanced multivalent-ion batteries.

Interlayer Engineering of VS2 Nanosheets via In Situ Aniline Intercalative Polymerization toward Long-Cycling Magnesium-Ion Batteries

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) show great potential in large-scale energy storage systems, due to Mg2+ with high polarity leading to strong interactions within the cathode lattice, and the limited discovery of functional cathode materials with rapid kinetics of Mg2+ diffusion and desirable cyclability retards their development. Herein, we innovatively report the confined synthesis of VS2/polyaniline (VS2/PANI) hybrid nanosheets. The VS2/PANI hybrids with expanded interlayer spacing are successfully prepared through the exfoliation of VS2 and in situ polymerization between VS2 nanosheets and aniline. The intercalated PANI increases the interlayer spacing of VS2 from 0.57 to 0.95 nm and improves its electronic conductivity, leading to rapid Mg-ion diffusivity of 10-10-10-12 cm2 s-1. Besides, the PANI sandwiched between layers of VS2 is conducive to maintaining the structural integrity of electrode materials. Benefiting from the above advantages, the VS2/PANI-1 hybrids present remarkable performance for Mg2+ storage, showing high reversible discharge capacity (245 mA h g-1 at 100 mA g-1) and impressive long lifespan (91 mA h g-1 after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g-1). This work provides new perspectives for designing high-performance cathode materials based on layered materials for RMBs.

Full Potential Catalysis of Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT with Phosphorus Vacancies for Li2S1-2 Deposition/Decomposition and S8/Li2Sn (3 ≤ n ≤ 8) Conversion in Li-S Batteries

The slow kinetics of polysulfide conversions hinders the commercial progress of Li-S batteries. The introduction of high-efficiency catalysts accelerates heterogeneous reactions and enhances the utilization of S. The full potential of the Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT-modified separator catalyzes the all-process reactions of the S electrode and increases the rates and cycling lives of the batteries. The two-site synergistic effect of Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT regulates the catalytic activity, and the phosphorus vacancies enrich the active sites. The higher electron density at the Co and Ni double sites increases chemisorption of the Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT on Li2Sn (1 ≤ n ≤ 4), stretches and breaks the Li-S and Ni-S bonds during Li2S decomposition, and reduces the energy barrier for Li2S decomposition. The cyclic voltammograms of the asymmetric batteries demonstrated that Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT also catalyzed the Li2Sn ⇌ S8 (3 ≤ n ≤ 8) reaction, realizing the full catalytic potential of the Li-S batteries. Increased Li+ diffusion/migration in the Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT-modified separator ensured fast electrochemical reactions. The excellent catalytic effect of Co0.4Ni1.6P-V/CNT provided smaller polarization and superior rate performance, which led to high discharge specific capacities of 1511.9, 1172.6, 1006.0, 881.0, and 785.7 mA h g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 mA cm-2 with sulfur loadings of 7.98 mg cm-2, respectively. This approach involving simple crystal modulation and introduction of defects provides a new way to achieve the full catalytic potential of Li-S batteries.

Review of the Scalable Core-Shell Synthesis Methods: The Improvements of Li-Ion Battery Electrochemistry and Cycling Stability

The demand for lithium-ion batteries has significantly increased due to the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). However, these batteries have a limited lifespan, which needs to be improved for the long-term use needs of EVs expected to be in service for 20 years or more. In addition, the capacity of lithium-ion batteries is often insufficient for long-range travel, posing challenges for EV drivers. One approach that has gained attention is using core-shell structured cathode and anode materials. That approach can provide several benefits, such as extending the battery lifespan and improving capacity performance. This paper reviews various challenges and solutions by the core-shell strategy adopted for both cathodes and anodes. The highlight is scalable synthesis techniques, including solid phase reactions like the mechanofusion process, ball-milling, and spray-drying process, which are essential for pilot plant production. Due to continuous operation with a high production rate, compatibility with inexpensive precursors, energy and cost savings, and an environmentally friendly approach that can be carried out at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperatures. Future developments in this field may focus on optimizing core-shell materials and synthesis techniques for improved Li-ion battery performance and stability.

Research development on electrolytes for magnesium-ion batteries

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) are considered strong candidates for next-generation energy-storage systems owing to their high theoretical capacity, divalent nature and the natural abundancy of magnesium (Mg) resources on Earth. However, the development of MIBs has been mainly limited by the incompatibility of Mg anodes with several Mg salts and conventional organic-liquid electrolytes. Therefore, one major challenge faced by MIBs technology lies on developing safe electrolytes, which demonstrate appropriate electrochemical voltage window and compatibility with Mg anode. This review discusses the development of MIBs from the point-of-view of the electrolyte syntheses. A systematic assessment of promising electrolyte design strategies is proposed including liquid and solid-state electrolytes. Liquid-based electrolytes have been largely explored and can be categorized by solvent-type: organic solvent, aqueous solvent, and ionic-liquids. Organic-liquid electrolytes usually present high electrochemical and chemical stability but are rather dangerous, while aqueous electrolytes present high ionic conductivity and eco-friendliness but narrow electrochemical stability window. Some ionic-liquid electrolytes have proved outstanding performance but are fairly expensive. As alternative to liquid electrolytes, solid-state electrolytes are increasingly attractive to increase energy density and safety. However, improving the ionic conductivity of Mg ions in these types of electrolytes is extremely challenging. We believe that this comprehensive review will enable researchers to rapidly grasp the problems faced by electrolytes for MIBs and the electrolyte design strategies proposed to this date.

Morphology Engineering of VS4 Microspheres as High-Performance Cathodes for Hybrid Mg2+/Li+ Batteries

V-based sulfides are considered as potential cathode materials for Mg2+/Li+ hybrid ion batteries (MLIBs) due to their high theoretical specific capacities, unique crystal structure, and flexible valence adjustability. However, the formation of irreversible polysulfides, poor cycling performance, and severe structural collapse at high current densities impede their further development. Herein, VS4 microspheres with various controllable nanoarchitectures were successfully constructed via a facile solvothermal method by adjusting the amount of hydrochloric acid and were used as cathode materials for MLIBs. The VS4 microsphere self-assembled by bundles of paralleled-nanorods and some intersected-nanorods (VS4@NC-5) exhibits an outstanding initial discharge capacity of 805.4 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 that is maintained at 259.1 mAh g-1 after 70 cycles. Moreover, the VS4@NC-5 cathode can deliver a superior rate capability (146.1 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1) and ultralong cycling life (134.5 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1 after 2000 cycles). The extraordinary electrochemical performance of VS4@NC-5 could be attributed to its special multi-hierarchical microsphere structure and the formation of N-doped carbon layers and V-C bonds, resulting in unobstructed ion diffusion channels, multidimensional electron transfer pathways, and enhancements of electrical conductivity and structure stability. Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism and phase conversion behavior of the VS4@NC-5 cathode at various states are investigated by a series of ex situ characterization methods. The VS4 well-designed through morphological engineering in this work can pave a way to explore more sulfides with high-rate performance and long cycling stability for energy storage devices.

Implanting CuS Quantum Dots into Carbon Nanorods for Efficient Magnesium-Ion Batteries

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) are emerging as potential next-generation energy storage systems due to high security and high theoretical energy density. Nevertheless, the development of MIBs is limited by the lack of cathode materials with high specific capacity and cyclic stability. Currently, transition metal sulfides are considered as a promising class of cathode materials for advanced MIBs. Herein, a template-based strategy is proposed to successfully fabricate metal-organic framework-derived in-situ porous carbon nanorod-encapsulated CuS quantum dots (CuS-QD@C nanorods) via a two-step method of sulfurization and cation exchange. CuS quantum dots have abundant electrochemically active sites, which facilitate the contact between the electrode and the electrolyte. In addition, the tight combination of CuS quantum dots and porous carbon nanorods increases the electronic conductivity while accelerating the transport speed of ions and electrons. With these architectural and compositional advantages, when used as a cathode material for MIBs, the CuS-QD@C nanorods exhibit remarkable performance in magnesium storage, including a high reversible capacity of 323.7 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, excellent long-term cycling stability (98.5 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 ), and satisfying rate performance (111.8 mA g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 ).

A single-crystalline Co3O4 nanoparticle-assembled three-dimensional chain as an ultra-stable magnesium-ion battery cathode at different temperatures

Engineering optimal cathode materials is significant for developing stable magnesium-ion (Mg-ion) batteries. Here, we present a single-crystalline Co₃O₄ nanoparticle-chain three-dimensional (3D) micro/nanostructure as an Mg-ion battery cathode. The hierarchical morphology is composed of radial nanochains self-assembled by single-crystalline nanoparticles, thus significantly facilitating the transfer of electrons and ions. 3D single-crystalline Co₃O₄ as an Mg-ion battery cathode displays a stable capacity of 111.7 mA h g^-1 after 200 cycles with a decay rate per cycle as low as 0.037%. After four rounds of testing, the rate performance remains stable with a tiny decrease from 125.94 to 124.78 mA h g^-1. At temperatures of 45 °C and -5 °C, the cathode still displays good stability and rate-performance. Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) results verify a low energy barrier of the Co₃O₄ cathode. It is expected that the single-crystalline nanoparticle-assembled 3D structure and the stable Mg-storage performance will find broad applications for developing other stable energy-storage materials and their batteries.

Uniform P2-K0.6CoO2 Microcubes as a High-Energy Cathode Material for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Layered transition-metal (TM) oxides have drawn ever-growing interest as positive electrode materials in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Nevertheless, the practical implementation of these positive electrode materials is seriously hampered by their inferior cyclic property and rate performance. Reported here is a self-templating strategy to prepare homogeneous P2-K_0.6CoO₂ (KCO) microcubes. Benefiting from the unusual microcube architecture, the interface between the electrolyte and the active material is considerably diminished. As a result, the KCO microcubes manifest boosted electrochemical properties for potassium storage including large reversible capacity (87.2 mAh g^-1 under 20 mA g^-1), superior rate performance, and ultralong cyclic steady (an improved capacity retention of 86.9% under 40 mA g^-1 after 1000 cycles). More importantly, the fabrication approach can be effectively extended to prepare other layered TM oxide (P3-K_0.5MnO₂, P3-K_0.5Mn_0.8Fe_0.2O₂, P2-K_0.6Co_0.67Mn_0.33O₂, and P2-K_0.6Co_0.66Mn_0.17Ni_0.17O₂) microcubes and nonlayered TM oxide (KFeO₂) microcubes.

Stability of Aqueous Suspensions of COOH-Decorated Carbon Nanotubes to Organic Solvents, Esterification, and Decarboxylation

Carbon nanotubes are among the most widely used nanosystems, and stability of carbon nanotube suspensions is critical for nanotechnology and environmental science. Remaining in aqueous environment alone misses important factors that regulate colloidal stability in the presence of electrolytes. Indeed, introduction of (80-95) vol % organic solvents leads to sharp changes in suspension properties depending on the solvent. For example, the critical coagulation concentrations for a given inorganic or organic coagulating ion can change by 2 orders of magnitude when going from dimethyl sulfoxide to acetonitrile. We establish and explain these trends by Lewis acid-base interactions and show that a strong interaction extending beyond the standard theory of aggregation plays an important role.
