Learning from the Heterogeneity at Electrochemical Interfaces

Flexible and Dynamic Light-Guided Electrochemiluminescence for Spatiotemporal Imaging of Photoelectrochemical Processes on Hematite

Here, we report an electrochemiluminescence (ECL)-based approach for imaging of local photoelectrochemical processes on hematite in a spatially and temporally controlled manner. The local processes were guided by flexible and dynamic light illumination, not requiring any prepatterned conductive features or photomasks, with a digital micromirror device (DMD). The imaging approach was based on light-addressable electrochemical reactions on hematite, resulting in photoinduced ECL emission for spatiotemporally resolved imaging of photoelectrochemical processes selectively guided by light illumination. After clarifying the capability of hematite as a photosensitive electrode, we validated that the illuminated hematite exhibited stable light-guided ECL emission in correspondence with the illuminated area, with a spatial resolution of 0.8 μm and a temporal resolution of 1 μs, even over a long period of 6 h. More importantly, this study exemplified the simple yet effective ECL-based approach for electrochemical visualization of local photoelectrochemical processes guided by flexible and dynamic adjustment of light illumination in a spatiotemporally controlled way.

Correlating Thickness and Phase of Single Co(OH)2 Micro-Platelets to the Intrinsic Activity of Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Morphology, crystal phase, and its transformation are important structures that frequently determine electrocatalytic activity, but the correlations of intrinsic activity with them are not completely understood. Herein, using Co(OH)2 micro-platelets with well-defined structures (phase, thickness, area, and volume) as model electrocatalysts of oxygen evolution reaction, multiple in situ microscopy is combined to correlate the electrocatalytic activity with morphology, phase, and its transformation. Single-entity morphology and electrochemistry characterized by atomic force microscopy and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy reveal a thickness-dependent turnover frequency (TOF) of α-Co(OH)2. The TOF (≈9.5 s-1) of α-Co(OH)2 with ≈14 nm thickness is ≈95-fold higher than that (≈0.1 s-1) with ≈80 nm. Moreover, this thickness-dependent activity has a critical thickness of ≈30 nm, above which no thickness-dependence is observed. Contrarily, β-Co(OH)2 reveals a lower TOF (≈0.1 s-1) having no significant correlation with thickness. Combining single-entity electrochemistry with in situ Raman microspectroscopy, this thickness-dependent activity is explained by more reversible Co3+/Co2+ kinetics and larger ratio of active Co sites of thinner α-Co(OH)2, accompanied with faster phase transformation and more extensive surface restructuration. The findings highlight the interactions among thickness, ratio of active sites, kinetics of active sites, and phase transformation, and offer new insights into structure-activity relationships at single-entity level.

Simultaneous Mapping of Electrocatalytic Activity and Selectivity via Hybrid Scanning Electrochemical Probe Microscopy

Nanoscale scanning electrochemical probe microscopy started to elucidate the heterogeneity of electrocatalytic activity at electrode surfaces. However, understanding the heterogeneity in product selectivity, another crucial aspect of interfacial reactivity, remains challenging. Herein, we introduce a method combining scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) to enable the spatially resolved mapping of both activity and selectivity in electrocatalysis. A dual-channel nanopipette probe was developed: one channel for activity mapping and the other for product detection with a high collection efficiency (>95%) and sensitivity. Simultaneous mapping of activity and selectivity in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is demonstrated. Combined with colocalized crystal orientation mapping, we uncover the local electrocatalytic performance of ORR at different facets on polycrystalline Pt and Au. The high-resolution selectivity mapping enabled by our method with colocalized structural characterization can provide structure-activity-selectivity relationships that are often unavailable in ensemble measurement, holding promise for understanding key structural motifs controlling interfacial reactivity.

Deciphering the Interplay between Local and Global Dynamics of Anodic Metal Oxidation

The stark difference between global and local metal oxidation dynamics underscores the need for methodologies capable of performing precise sub-μm-scale and wide-field measurements. In this study, we present reflective microscopy as a tool developed to address this challenge, illustrated by the example of chronoamperometric Fe oxidation in a NaCl solution. Analysis at a local scale of 10 s of μm has revealed three distinct periods of Fe oxidation: the initial covering of the metal interface with a surface film, followed by the electrochemical conversion of the formed surface film, and finally, the in-depth oxidation of Fe. In addition, thermodynamic calculations and the quantitative analysis of changes in optical signal (light intensity), correlated with variations in refractive indexes, suggest the initial formation of maghemite, followed by its subsequent conversion to magnetite. The reactivity maps for all three periods are heterogeneous, which can be attributed to the preferential oxidation of certain crystallographic grains. Notably, at the global scale of 100 s of μm, reactivity initiates at the electrode border and progresses toward its center, demonstrating a unique pattern that is independent of the local metal structure. This finding underscores the significance of simultaneously employing sub-μm-precise, quantitative, and wide-field measurements for a comprehensive description of metal oxidation processes.

Exploring how cation entropy influences electric double layer formation and electrochemical reactivity

Electric double layers are crucial to energy storage and electrocatalytic device performance. While double layer formation originates in electrostatic interactions, electric double layer properties are governed by a balance of both electrostatic and entropic driving forces. Favorable ion-surface electrostatic interactions attract counterions to charged surfaces to compensate, or "screen," potentials, but the confinement of these same ions from a bulk reservoir to the interface incurs an entropic penalty. Here, we use a dicationic imidazolium ionic liquid and its monovalent analogue to explore how cation valence and entropy influence double layer formation and electrochemical reactivity using CO2 electroreduction as a model reaction. We find that divalent and monovalent cations display similar CO2 reduction kinetics but differ vastly in steady-state reactivity due to rapid electrochemically induced precipitation of insulating dicationic (bi)carbonate films. Using in situ surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy, we find that potential-dependent cation reorientation occurs at similar potentials between the two ionic liquids, but the introduction of a covalent link in the divalent cation imparts a more ordered double layer structure that favors (bi)carbonate precipitation. In mixed monovalent-divalent electrolytes, we find that the divalent cations dominate interfacial properties by preferentially accumulating at surfaces even at very low relative concentrations. Our findings confirm that ion entropy plays a key role in modulating local electrochemical environments. Furthermore, we highlight how double layer properties are sensitive to the properties of counterions that pay the lowest entropic penalty to accumulate at interfaces. Overall, we illustrate that ion entropy provides a new knob to tune reaction microenvironments and unveil how entropy plays a major role in modulating electrochemical reactivity in mixed ion electrolytes.

Multiphase Chemistry under Nanoconfinement: An Electrochemical Perspective

Most relevant systems of interest to modern chemists rarely consist of a single phase. Real-world problems that require a rigorous understanding of chemical reactivity in multiple phases include the development of wearable and implantable biosensors, efficient fuel cells, single cell metabolic characterization techniques, and solar energy conversion devices. Within all of these systems, confinement effects at the nanoscale influence the chemical reaction coordinate. Thus, a fundamental understanding of the nanoconfinement effects of chemistry in multiphase environments is paramount. Electrochemistry is inherently a multiphase measurement tool reporting on a charged species traversing a phase boundary. Over the past 50 years, electrochemistry has witnessed astounding growth. Subpicoampere current measurements are routine, as is the study of single molecules and nanoparticles. This Perspective focuses on three nanoelectrochemical techniques to study multiphase chemistry under nanoconfinement: stochastic collision electrochemistry, single nanodroplet electrochemistry, and nanopore electrochemistry.

Development of Electrochemical Cells and Their Application for Spatially Resolved Analysis Using a Multitechnique Approach: From Conventional Experiments to X-Ray Nanoprobe Beamlines

Real (electro)catalysts are often heterogeneous, and their activity and selectivity depend on the properties of specific active sites. Therefore, unveiling the so-called structure-activity relationship is essential for a rational search for better materials and, consequently, for the development of the field of (electro-)catalysis. Thus, spatially resolved techniques are powerful tools as they allow us to characterize and/or measure the activity and selectivity of different regions of heterogeneous catalysts. To take full advantage of that, we have developed spectroelectrochemical cells to perform spatially resolved analysis using X-ray nanoprobe synchrotron beamlines and conventional pieces of equipment. Here, we describe the techniques available at the Carnaúba beamline at the Sirius-LNLS storage ring, and then we show how our cells enable obtaining X-ray (XRF, XRD, XAS, etc.) and vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman) contrast images. Through some proof-of-concept experiments, we demonstrate how using a multi-technique approach could render a complete and detailed analysis of an (electro)catalyst overall performance.

Mechanistic Insights Gained by High Spatial Resolution Reactivity Mapping of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous (Electro)Catalysts

The recent development of high spatial resolution microscopy and spectroscopy tools enabled reactivity analysis of homogeneous and heterogeneous (electro)catalysts at previously unattainable resolution and sensitivity. These techniques revealed that catalytic entities are more heterogeneous than expected and local variations in reaction mechanism due to divergences in the nature of active sites, such as their atomic properties, distribution, and accessibility, occur both in homogeneous and heterogeneous (electro)catalysts. In this review, we highlight recent insights in catalysis research that were attained by conducting high spatial resolution studies. The discussed case studies range from reactivity detection of single particles or single molecular catalysts, inter- and intraparticle communication analysis, and probing the influence of catalysts distribution and accessibility on the resulting reactivity. It is demonstrated that multiparticle and multisite reactivity analyses provide unique knowledge about reaction mechanism that could not have been attained by conducting ensemble-based, averaging, spectroscopy measurements. It is highlighted that the integration of spectroscopy and microscopy measurements under realistic reaction conditions will be essential to bridge the gap between model-system studies and real-world high spatial resolution reactivity analysis.

Monitoring Photoinduced Interparticle Chemical Communication In Situ

Monitoring interparticle chemical communication plays a critical role in the nanomaterial synthesis as this communication controls the final structure and stability of global nanoparticles (NPs). Yet most ensemble analytical techniques, which could only reveal average macroscopic information, are unable to elucidate NP-to-NP interactions. Herein, we employ stochastic collision electrochemistry to track the morphology transformation of Ag NPs in photochemical process at the single NP level. By further statistical analysis of time-resolved current transients, we quantitatively determine the dynamic chemical potential difference and interparticle communication between populations of large and small Ag NPs. The high sensitivity of stochastic collision electrochemistry enables the in situ investigation of chemical communication-dependent transformation kinetics of NPs in photochemical process, shedding light on designing nanomaterials.
