Non-adiabatic Exciton Dynamics in van der Waals Heterostructures

Detailed Complementary Consistency: Wave Function Tells Particle How to Hop, Particle Tells Wave Function How to Collapse

In mixed quantum-classical dynamics, the quantum subsystem can have both wave function and particle-like descriptions. However, they may yield inconsistent results for the expectation value of the same physical quantity. We here propose a novel detailed complementary consistency (DCC) method based on the principle of detailed internal consistency. Namely, the wave function along each trajectory tells the particle how to hop, while the particle tells the wave function how to collapse based on active states in the trajectory ensemble. As benchmarked in a diverse array of representative models with localized nonadiabatic couplings, DCC not only achieves fully consistent results (i.e., identical populations calculated based on wave functions and active states) but also closely reproduces the exact quantum results. Due to the high performance, our new DCC method has great potential to give a consistent and accurate mixed quantum-classical description of general nonadiabatic dynamics after further development.

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics with subsystem density functional theory: application to crystalline pentacene

In this work, we report the development and assessment of the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics approach with the electronic structure calculations based on the linearly scaling subsystem density functional method. The approach is implemented in an open-source embedded Quantum Espresso/Libra software specially designed for nonadiabatic dynamics simulations in extended systems. As proof of the applicability of this method to large condensed-matter systems, we examine the dynamics of nonradiative relaxation of excess excitation energy in pentacene crystals with the simulation supercells containing more than 600 atoms. We find that increased structural disorder observed in larger supercell models induces larger nonadiabatic couplings of electronic states and accelerates the relaxation dynamics of excited states. We conduct a comparative analysis of several quantum-classical trajectory surface hopping schemes, including two new methods proposed in this work (revised decoherence-induced surface hopping and instantaneous decoherence at frustrated hops). Most of the tested schemes suggest fast energy relaxation occurring with the timescales in the 0.7-2.0 ps range, but they significantly overestimate the ground state recovery rates. Only the modified simplified decay of mixing approach yields a notably slower relaxation timescales of 8-14 ps, with a significantly inhibited ground state recovery.

Consistent Construction of the Density Matrix from Surface Hopping Trajectories

Proper construction of the density matrix based on surface hopping trajectories remains a difficult problem. Due to the well-known overcoherence in traditional surface hopping simulations, the electronic wave function cannot be used directly. In this work, we propose a consistent density matrix construction method, which takes the advantage of occupation of active states to rescale the coherence calculated by wave functions and ensures the intrinsic consistency of the density matrix. This new trajectory analysis method can be used for both Tully's fewest switches surface hopping (FSSH) and our recently proposed branching corrected surface hopping (BCSH). As benchmarked in both one- and two-dimensional standard scattering models, the new approach combined with BCSH trajectories achieves highly accurate time-dependent spatial distributions of adiabatic populations and coherence compared to exact quantum results.

Vitality of Intralayer Vibration in hBN for Effective Long-Range Interlayer Hole Transfer across High Barriers in MoSe2/hBN/WSe2 Heterostructures

Introducing the two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) between 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers promises convenient manipulation of the interlayer exciton (IX) and interlayer charge transfer in TMD/hBN/TMD heterostructures, while the role of inserted hBN layers during IX formation is controversial. Employing ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations and the electron-phonon coupling model, we systematically investigate interlayer hole transfer in MoSe2/WSe2 bilayers intercalated by hBN layers with various thicknesses. The conventional direct hole transfer from MoSe2 to WSe2 is decelerated by 2-3 orders of magnitude after the hBN insertion. Meanwhile, a novel channel intermediated by a deeper hole of WSe2 becomes dominant, where the intralayer shear mode of hBN plays a crucial role by reducing the energy barriers for this new channel. The unique role of hBN layers is revealed for the first time, enriching the knowledge of the underlying microscopic mechanisms and providing instructive guidance to practical van der Waals optoelectronic devices.

What is Missing in the Mean Field Description of Spatial Distribution of Population? Important Role of Auxiliary Wave Packets in Trajectory Branching

When the traditional Ehrenfest mean field approach is employed to simulate nonadiabatic dynamics, an effective wave packet (WP) on the average potential energy surface (PES) is utilized to describe the nuclear motion. In the fully quantum picture, however, the WP components on different adiabatic PESs gradually separate in space because they evolve under different velocities and forces. Due to trajectory branching of the WP components, proper decoherence needs to be taken into account, and the spatial distribution of population cannot be described by a single effective WP. Here, we propose an auxiliary branching corrected mean field (A-BCMF) method, where trajectories of auxiliary WPs on adiabatic PESs are introduced. As benchmarked in the three standard Tully models, A-BCMF not only gives correct channel populations but also captures an accurate time-dependent spatial distribution of population. Thereby, we reveal the important role of auxiliary WPs in solving intrinsic problems of the widely used mean field description of nonadiabatic dynamics.

Pseudo-heterostructure and condensation of 1D moiré excitons in twisted phosphorene bilayers

Heterostructures are not expected to form in a single homogeneous material. Here, we show that planar pseudo-heterostructures could emerge in a twisted bilayer of phosphorene (tbP), driving in-plane energy and charge transfer. The formation of moiré superlattices combined with electronic anisotropy in tbPs yields one-dimensional (1D) moiré excitons with long radiative and nonradiative lifetimes, large binding energies, and deep moiré potentials. Low-frequency moiré phonons and dynamic moiré potentials are revealed to be responsible for the in-plane energy/charge transfer and exciton dynamics. The 1D moiré excitons are predicted to exhibit Bose-Einstein condensation at high temperatures and may lead to exotic Tonks-Girardeau Bose gases.
