Liquid Metal Actuators: A Comparative Analysis of Surface Tension Controlled Actuation

Liquid metals, with their unique combination of electrical and mechanical properties, offer great opportunities for actuation based on surface tension modulation. Thanks to the scaling laws of surface tension, which can be electrochemically controlled at low voltages, liquid metal actuators stand out from other soft actuators for their remarkable characteristics such as high contractile strain rates and higher work densities at smaller length scales. This review summarizes the principles of liquid metal actuators and discusses their performance as well as theoretical pathways toward higher performances. The objective is to provide a comparative analysis of the ongoing development of liquid metal actuators. The design principles of the liquid metal actuators are analyzed, including low-level elemental principles (kinematics and electrochemistry), mid-level structural principles (reversibility, integrity, and scalability), and high-level functionalities. A wide range of practical use cases of liquid metal actuators from robotic locomotion and object manipulation to logic and computation is reviewed. From an energy perspective, strategies are compared for coupling the liquid metal actuators with an energy source toward fully untethered robots. The review concludes by offering a roadmap of future research directions of liquid metal actuators.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Hydrophilic Sphalerite (110) Surface as Modified by Normal and Branched Butylthiols

Molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the wettability of the hydrophilic sphalerite (110) surface chemically modified by butylthiols made up of normal and branched alkyl tails, referred to as n-butylthiol and i-butylthiol hereafter, at different adsorption site coverages. Butylthiol molecules were grafted onto the adsorption sites of the surface in two different distributions-ordered and random. The results showed that for a given butylthiol at a given site coverage, random surface distribution yielded a slightly larger contact angle. This observation was attributed to the fact that average distances between the first and second nearest neighbors of butylthiol molecules are shorter in the case of random surface distribution, resulting in smaller patches of bare surface exposed to water molecules compared to those of the ordered surface distribution. Regardless of the tail structure, the random surface distribution exhibited hydrophobic character (i.e., contact angle ≥ 90°) at a relatively low site coverage of about 25%. The test area method and the Kirkwood and Buff approach were adopted to estimate surface energies (γ_SV) of the bare sphalerite (110) surface and the collector monolayer, respectively. Using the obtained γ_SV values of these two pure states, the apparent surface energy as a function of surface coverage was determined based on Cassie's law. This allowed us to estimate the corresponding values of solid-liquid apparent interfacial tension (γ_SL). Both γ_SV and γ_SL exhibit a linear inverse dependence on surface coverage with a crossover point at 25% site coverage (about 50% surface coverage), above which γ_SV falls below γ_SL, leading to contact angles greater than 90°. The results also revealed that contact angles of the two butylthiols are comparable at site coverages below ∼85%, but above that, they are significantly lower for the branched thiols compared to their normal counterparts. Considering the Lennard-Jones interaction energies between the water cluster and the butylthiols, stronger attractive interactions were present in the case of i-butylthiol due to the presence of two methyl groups in its alkyl chain. This difference was the most intense at site coverages above ∼85%.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Alkylthiol Self-Assembled Monolayers on Liquid Mercury

We report computer simulation of the self-assembly of alkylthiols on the surface of liquid mercury. Here we focus mainly on the alkylthiol behavior on mercury as a function of the surfactant surface coverage, which we study by means of large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the equilibrium structure at room temperature. The majority of the presented results are obtained for octa- and dodecanethiol surfactants. This topic is particularly interesting because the properties of the alkylthiol self-assembled monolayers on liquid mercury are relevant for practical applications (e.g., in organic electronics) and can be controlled by mechanically manipulating the monolayer, i.e., by changing its structure. Our computer simulation results shed additional light on the alkylthiol self-assembly on liquid mercury by revealing the coexistence of a dense agglomerated laying-down alkylthiols with a very dilute 2D vapor on mercury surface rather than a single vapor phase in the low surface coverage regime. In the regimes of the high surface coverage we observe the coexistence of the laying-down liquid phase and crystalline phases with alkylthiols standing tilted at a sharp angle to the surface normal, which agrees with the phase behavior previously seen in X-ray and tensiometry experiments. We also discuss the influence of finite-size effects, which one inevitably encounters in molecular simulations. Our findings agree well with the general predictions of the condensation/evaporation theory for finite systems. The temperature dependence of the stability of the crystalline alkylthiol phases and details of the surfactant chemical binding to the surface are discussed. The equilibrium structure of the crystalline phase is investigated in detail for the alkylthiols of various tail lengths.
