Abstract
The photodetachment and stability of R-Mandelate, the deprotonated form of the R-Mandelic acid, was investigated by observing the neutral species issued from either simple photodetachment or dissociative photodetachment in a cold anions set-up. R-Mandalate has the possibility to form an intramolecular ionic hydrogen-bond between adjacent hydroxyl and carboxylate groups. The potential energy surface along the proton transfer (PT) coordinate between both groups (O- …H+ …- OCO) features a single local minima, with the proton localized on the O- group (OH…- OCO). However, the structure with the proton localized on the - OCO group (O- …HOCO) is also observed because it falls within the extremity of the vibrational wavefunction of the OH…- OCO isomer along the PT coordinate. The stability of the corresponding radicals, produced upon photodetachment, is strongly dependent on the position of the proton in the anion: the radicals produced from the OH…- OCO isomer decarboxylate without barrier, while the radicals produced from the O- …HOCO isomer are stable.

Abstract
This article highlights the fundamentals of ion-solvent clustering processes that are pertinent to understanding an ion's behaviour during differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) experiments. We contrast DMS with static-field ion mobility, where separation is affected by mobility differences under the high-field and low-field conditions of an asymmetric oscillating electric field. Although commonly used in mass spectrometric (MS) workflows to enhance signal-to-noise ratios and remove isobaric contaminants, the chemistry and physics that underpins the phenomenon of differential mobility has yet to be fully fleshed out. Moreover, we are just now making progress towards understanding how the DMS separation waveform creates a dynamic clustering environment when the carrier gas is seeded with the vapour of a volatile solvent molecule (e.g., methanol). Interestingly, one can correlate the dynamic clustering behaviour observed in DMS experiments with gas-phase and solution-phase molecular properties such as hydrophobicity, acidity, and solubility. However, to create a generalized, global model for property determination using DMS data one must employ machine learning. In this article, we provide a first-principles description of differential ion mobility in a dynamic clustering environment. We then discuss the correlation between dynamic clustering propensity and analyte physicochemical properties and demonstrate that analytes exhibiting similar ion-solvent interactions (e.g., charge-dipole) follow well-defined trends with respect to DMS clustering behaviour. Finally, we describe how supervised machine learning can be used to create predictive models of molecular properties using DMS data. We additionally highlight open questions in the field and provide our perspective on future directions that can be explored.

Abstract
It has been shown previously in protonated, deprotonated and ionized guanine-cytosine base pairs that intra-base pair proton transfer from the N1-H at the Watson-Crick edge of guanine to the complementary nucleobase prompts non-statistical dissociation of the base-pair system, and the dissociation of a proton-transferred base-pair structure is kinetically more favored than that of the starting, conventional base-pair structure. However, the fundamental chemistry underlying this anomalous and intriguing kinetics has not been completely revealed, which warrants the examination of more base-pair systems in different structural contexts in order to derive a generalized base-pair structure-kinetics correlation. The purpose of the present work is to expand the investigation to the non-canonical homodimeric and heterodimeric radical cations of 9-methylguanine (9MG) and 9-methyl-8-oxoguanine (9MOG), i.e., [9MG·9MG]˙+, [9MOG·9MG]˙+ and [9MOG·9MOG]˙+. Experimentally, collision-induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry coupled with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source was used for the formation of base-pair radical cations, followed by detection of dissociation product ions and cross sections in the collisions with Xe gas under single ion-molecule collision conditions and as a function of the center-of-mass collision energy. Computationally, density functional theory and coupled cluster theory were used to calculate and identify probable base-pair structures and intra-base pair proton transfer and hydrogen transfer reactions, followed by kinetics modeling to explore the properties of dissociation transition states and kinetic factors. The significance of this work is twofold: it provides insight into base-pair opening kinetics in three biologically-important, non-canonical systems upon oxidative and ionization damage; and it links non-statistical dissociation to intra-base pair proton-transfer originating from the N1-H at the Watson-Crick edge of 8-oxoguanine, enhancing understanding towards the base-pair fragmentation assisted by proton transfer.

Abstract
The collision-induced dissociation of the protonated cytosine-guanine pair was studied using tandem mass spectrometry (MS3) coupled to infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy with the free electron laser at Orsay (CLIO) to determine the structure of the CH+ and GH+ ionic fragments. The results were rationalized with the help of electronic structure calculations at the density functional theory level with the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2p) method. Several tautomers of each fragment were identified for the first time, some of which were previously predicted by other authors. In addition, two unexpected and minor tautomers were also found: cytosine keto-imino [CKI(1,2,3,4)H+] and guanine keto-amino [GKA(1,3,7)H+]. These results highlight the importance of the DNA base tautomerization assisted by inter- and intramolecular proton or hydrogen transfer within the protonated pairs.

Abstract
In this paper, we present the IRMPD spectra of three ionic complexes between guanine (G) and silver (Ag+): [GAg-H2O]+, [GAgG]+ produced in the electrospray ionization source of the mass spectrometer, and [GAg]+ produced by collision induced dissociation of the [GAgG]+ complex. On the basis of the comparison of theoretically calculated IR spectra, we show that there are two isomers of each complex containing two different keto-amino (KA) tautomers of G (GKA(1,9) and GKA(1,7)). The observed isomers are the most stable structures in aqueous solution, and their experimentally estimated relative populations are in better agreement with the calculated relative populations in solution than in the gas phase, both at 298 K. We concluded that these observations suggest that GKA(1,9) and GKA(1,7) coexist in solution according to previous theoretical reports (Colominas, C.; et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 118, 6811). We were unable to find any evidence of the presence of the GEA(9), GKA(3,7), GKA(3,9), or GKA(7,9), whose relative stabilities in solution are strongly dependent on the theoretical method used to account for the solvent effect (Hanus, M.; et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 7678).

Abstract
We investigated the collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions of a protonated Hoogsteen 9-methylguanine-1-methylcytosine base pair (HG-[9MG·1MC + H]+), which aims to address the mystery of the literature reported "anomaly" in product ion distributions and compare the kinetics of a Hoogsteen base pair with its Watson-Crick isomer WC-[9MG·1MC + H]+ (reported recently by Sun et al.; Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2020, 22, 24986). Product ion cross sections and branching ratios were measured as a function of center-of-mass collision energy using guided-ion beam tandem mass spectrometry, from which base-pair dissociation energies were determined. Product structures and energetics were assessed using various theories, of which the composite DLPNO-CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ//ωB97XD/6-311++G(d,p) was adopted as the best-performing method for constructing a reaction potential energy surface. The statistical Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory was found to provide a useful framework for rationalizing the dominating abundance of [1MC + H]+ over [9MG + H]+ in the fragment ions of HG-[9MG·1MC + H]+. The kinetics analysis proved the necessity for incorporating into kinetics modeling not only the static properties of reaction minima and transition states but more importantly, the kinetics of individual base-pair conformers that have formed in collisional activation. The analysis also pinpointed the origin of the statistical kinetics of HG-[9MG·1MC + H]+vs. the non-statistical behavior of WC-[9MG·1MC + H]+ in terms of their distinctively different intra-base-pair hydrogen-bonds and consequently the absence of proton transfer between the N1 position of 9MG and the N3' of 1MC in the Hoogsteen base pair. Finally, the Hoogsteen base pair was examined in the presence of a water ligand, i.e., HG-[9MG·1MC + H]+·H2O. Besides the same type of base-pair dissociation as detected in dry HG-[9MG·1MC + H]+, secondary methanol elimination was observed via the SN2 reaction of water with nucleobase methyl groups.

Abstract
RATIONALE Methods for isomer discrimination by mass spectroscopy are of increasing interest. Here we describe the development of a three-dimensional ion trap for infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy that enables the acquisition of the infrared spectrum of selected ions in the gas phase. This system is suitable for the study of a myriad of chemical systems, including isomer mixtures. METHODS A modified three-dimensional ion trap was coupled to a CO2 laser and an optical parametric oscillator/optical parametric amplifier (OPO/OPA) system operating in the range 2300 to 4000 cm-1 . Density functional theory vibrational frequency calculations were carried out to support spectral assignments. RESULTS Detailed descriptions of the interface between the laser and the mass spectrometer, the hardware to control the laser systems, the automated system for IRMPD spectrum acquisition and data management are presented. The optimization of the crystal position of the OPO/OPA system to maximize the spectroscopic response under low-power laser radiation is also discussed. CONCLUSIONS OPO/OPA and CO2 laser-assisted dissociation of gas-phase ions was successfully achieved. The system was validated by acquiring the IRMPD spectra of model species and comparing with literature data. Two isomeric alkaloids of high economic importance were characterized to demonstrate the potential of this technique, which is now available as an open IRMPD spectroscopy facility in Brazil.

Abstract
The structures and properties of metal cationized complexes of 9-ethylguanine (9eG) and 1-methylcytosine (1mC), (9eG:1mC)M+, where M+ = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+ as well as the protonated complex, (9eG:1mC)H+, have been studied using a combination of IRMPD spectroscopy and computational methods. For (9eG:1mC)H+, the dominant structure is a Hoogsteen type complex with the proton covalently bound to N3 of 1mC despite this being the third best protonation site of the two bases; based on proton affinities N7 of 9eG should be protonated. However, this structural oddity can be explained considering both the number of hydrogen bonds that can be formed when N3 of 1mC is protonated as well as the strong ion-induced dipole interaction that exists between an N3 protonated 1mC and 9eG due to the higher polarizability of 9eG. The anomalous dissociation of (9eG:1mC)H+, forming much more (1mC)H+ than would be predicted based on the computed thermochemistry, can be explained as being due to the structural oddity of the protonation site and that the barrier to proton transfer from N3 of 1mC to N7 of 9eG grows dramatically as the base pair begins to dissociate. For the (9eG:1mC)M+; M = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+ complexes, single unique structures could not be assigned. However, the experimental spectra were consistent with the computed spectra. For (9eG:1mC)Li+, the lowest energy structure is one in which Li+ is bound to O6 of 9eG and both O2 and N3 of 1mC; there is also an interbase hydrogen bond from the amine of 1mC to N7 of 9eG. For Na+, K+, and Rb+, similar binding of the metal cation to 1mC is calculated but, unlike Li+, the lowest energy structure is one in which the metal cation is bound to N7 of 9eG; there is also an interbase hydrogen bond between the amine of 1mC and the carbonyl of 9eG. The lowest energy structure for the Cs complex is the Watson-Crick type base pairing with Cs+ binding only to 9eG through O6 and N7 and with three hydrogen bonds between 9eG and 1mC. It also interesting to note that the Watson-Crick base pairing structure gets lower in Gibbs energy relative to the lowest energy complexes as the metal gets larger. This indicates that the smaller, more densely charged cations have a greater propensity to interfere with Watson-Crick base pairing than do the larger, less densely charged metal cations.

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MASS SPECTROMETRY 2019; 30:846-854. Abstract
A comparative study on the proton-bound complexes of 1-methylcytosine (1-mC) with 1-methylguanine (1-mG) and 9-methylguanine (9-mG), [1-mC:1-mG:H]+ and [1-mC:9-mG:H]+, respectively, was carried out using energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation (ER-CID) experiments in combination with quantum chemical calculations. In ER-CID experiments, the measured survival yields indicated an essentially identical stability for the two proton-bound complexes. In comparison with the lowest-energy structures and base-pairing energetics predicted at the B3LYP/6-311+G(2d,2p) theory level, both complexes produced in this study were suggested to be proton-bound Hoogsteen base pairs. Curiously, despite the similarity in structures, binding energetics, and potential energy surfaces predicted by the B3LYP theory, the fragment branching ratios exhibited an intriguing alternation between the two proton-bound Hoogsteen base pairs. The CID of [1-mC:1-mG:H]+ produced protonated cytosines, [1-mC:H]+, more abundantly than [1-mG:H]+, whereas that of [1-mC:9-mG:H]+ gave rise to a more pronounced production of protonated guanines, [9-mG:H]+. However, using the proton affinities of moieties predicted by the high-accuracy methods, including CBS-QB3 and the Guassian-4 theory, the anomaly known for [Cytosine:Guanine:H]+ (J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 29, 2368-2379 (2018)) successfully accounted for the alternated branching ratios. Thereby, the anomaly, more specifically, the production of proton-transferred fragments of O-protonated cytosines in the CID of proton-bound Hoogsteen base pairs, is indeed real, which is disclosed as the alternated branching ratios in the CID spectra of [1-mC:1-mG:H]+ and [1-mC:9-mG:H]+ in this study. Abstract
To understand the anomalous collision-induced dissociation (CID) behavior of the proton-bound Hoogsteen base pair of cytosine (C) and guanine (G), C:H+∙∙∙G, we investigated CID of a homologue series of proton-bound heterodimers of C, 1-methylcytosine, and 5-methylcytosine with G as a common base partner. The CID experiments were performed in an energy-resolved way (ER-CID) under both multiple and near-single collision conditions. The relative stabilities of the protonated complexes examined by ER-CID suggested that the proton-bound complexes produced by electrospray ionization in this study are proton-bound Hoogsteen base pairs. On the other hand, in contrast to the other base pairs, CID of C:H+∙∙∙G exhibited more abundant productions of C:H+, the fragment protonated on the moiety with a smaller proton affinity, than that of G:H+. This appeared to contradict general prediction based on the kinetic method. However, further theoretical exploration of potential energy surfaces found that there can be facile proton transfers in the proton-bound Hoogsteen base pairs during the CID process, which makes the process accessible to an additional product state of O-protonated C for C:H+ fragments. The presence of an additional dissociation channel, which in other words corresponds to twofold degeneracy in the transition state leading to C:H+ fragments, effectively doubles the apparent reaction rate for production of C:H+. In this way, the process gives rise to the anomaly, the observed pronounced formation of C:H+ in the CID of the proton-bound Hoogsteen base pair, C:H+∙∙∙G. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.
