Chemical Understanding of the Limited Site-Specificity in Molecular Inner-Shell Photofragmentation

The Role of Momentum Partitioning in Covariance Ion Imaging Analysis

We present results from a covariance ion imaging study, which employs extensive filtering, on the relationship between fragment momenta to gain deeper insight into photofragmentation dynamics. A new data analysis approach is introduced that considers the momentum partitioning between the fragments of the breakup of a molecular polycation to disentangle concurrent fragmentation channels, which yield the same ion species. We exploit this approach to examine the momentum exchange relationship between the products, which provides direct insight into the dynamics of molecular fragmentation. We apply these techniques to extensively characterize the dissociation of 1-iodopropane and 2-iodopropane dications prepared by site-selective ionization of the iodine atom using extreme ultraviolet intense femtosecond laser pulses with a photon energy of 95 eV. Our assignments are supported by classical simulations, using parameters largely obtained directly from the experimental data.

Deconvolution of the X-ray absorption spectrum of trans-1,3-butadiene with resonant Auger spectroscopy

High-resolution carbon K-edge X-ray photoelectron, X-ray absorption, non-resonant and resonant Auger spectra are presented of gas phase trans-1,3-butadiene alongside a detailed theoretical analysis utilising nuclear ensemble approaches and vibronic models to simulate the spectroscopic observables. The resonant Auger spectra recorded across the first pre-edge band reveal a complex evolution of different electronic states which remain relatively well-localised on the edge or central carbon sites. The results demonstrate the sensitivity of the resonant Auger observables to the weighted contributions from multiple electronic states. The gradually evolving spectral features can be accurately and feasibly simulated within nuclear ensemble methods and interpreted with the population analysis.

Influence of Selective Carbon 1s Excitation on Auger-Meitner Decay in the ESCA Molecule

Two-dimensional spectral mapping is used to visualize how resonant Auger-Meitner spectra are influenced by the site of the initial core-electron excitation and the symmetry of the core-excited state in the trifluoroethyl acetate molecule (ESCA). We observe a significant enhancement of electron yield for excitation of the COO 1s → π* and CF3 1s → σ* resonances unlike excitation at resonances involving the CH3 and CH2 sites. The CF3 1s → π* and CF3 1s → σ* resonance spectra are very different from each other, with the latter populating most valence states equally. Two complementary electronic structure calculations for the photoelectron cross section and Auger-Meitner intensity are shown to effectively reproduce the site- and state-selective nature of the resonant enhancement features. The site of the core-electron excitation and the respective final state hole locality increase the sensistivity of the photoelectron signal at specific functional group sites. This showcases resonant Auger-Meitner decay as a potentially powerful tool for selectively probing structural changes at specific functional group sites of polyatomic molecules.

X-ray induced fragmentation of fulminic acid, HCNO

The fragmentation of fulminic acid, HCNO, after excitation and ionization of core electrons was investigated using Auger-electron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy. A considerable degree of site-selectivity is observed. Ionization of the carbon and oxygen 1s electron leads to around 70% CH+ + NO+, while ionization at the central N-atom produces only 37% CH+ + NO+, but preferentially forms O+ + HCN+ and O+ + CN+. The mass-selected Auger-electron spectra show that these fragments are associated with higher binding energy final states. Furthermore, ionization of the C 1s electron leads to a higher propensity for C-H bond fission compared to O 1s ionization. Following resonant Auger-Meitner decay after 1s → 3π excitation, 12 different ionic products are formed. At the C 1s edge, the parent ion HCNO+ is significantly more stable compared to the other two edges, which we also attribute to the higher contribution of final states with low binding energies in the C 1s resonant Auger electron spectra.

Forming Bonds While Breaking Old Ones: Isomer-Dependent Formation of H3O+ from Aminobenzoic Acid During X-ray-Induced Fragmentation

Intramolecular hydrogen transfer, a reaction where donor and acceptor sites of a hydrogen atom are part of the same molecule, is a ubiquitous reaction in biochemistry and organic synthesis. In this work, we report hydronium ion (H₃O⁺) production from aminobenzoic acid (ABA) after core-level ionization with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The formation of H₃O⁺ during the fragmentation requires that at least two hydrogen atoms migrate to one of the oxygen atoms within the molecule. The comparison of two structural isomers, ortho- and meta-ABA, revealed that the production of H₃O⁺ depends strongly on the structure of the molecule, the ortho-isomer being much more prone to produce H₃O⁺. The isomer-dependency suggests that the amine group acts as a donor in the hydrogen transfer process. In the case of ortho-ABA, detailed H₃O⁺ production pathways were investigated using photoelectron-photoion-photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) spectroscopy. It was found that H₃O⁺ can result from a direct two-body dissociation but also from sequential fragmentation processes.

Electronic state influence on selective bond breaking of core-excited nitrosyl chloride (ClNO)

The potential for selective bond breaking of a small molecule was investigated with electron-spectroscopy and electron-ion coincidence experiments on ClNO. The electron spectra were measured upon direct valence photo-ionization and upon resonant core-excitation at the N 1s- and O 1s-edges followed by emission of resonant Auger (RA) electrons. The RA spectra were analyzed with particular emphasis on the assignment of the participator and spectator states. The latter are of special relevance for investigations of how distinct electronic configurations influence selective bond breaking. The electron-ion coincidence measurements provided branching fractions of the produced ion-fragments as a function of electron binding energy. It explicitly demonstrates the influence of the final electronic states created after the photo-ionization and RA decay, on the fragmentation. In particular, we observe a significantly different branching fraction for spectator states compared with participator states. The bonds broken for the spectator states are also found to correlate with the anti-bonding character of the spectator-electron orbital.

Multireference Approach to Normal and Resonant Auger Spectra Based on the One-Center Approximation

A methodology to calculate the decay rates of normal and resonant Auger processes in atoms and molecules based on the One-Center Approximation (OCA), using atomic radial Auger integrals, is implemented within the restricted-active-space self-consistent-field (RASSCF) and the multistate restricted-active-space perturbation theory of second order (MS-RASPT2) frameworks, as part of the OpenMolcas project. To ensure an unbiased description of the correlation and relaxation effects on the initial core excited/ionized states and the final cationic states, their wave functions are optimized independently, whereas the Auger matrix elements are computed with a biorthonormalized set of molecular orbitals within the state-interaction (SI) approach. As a decay of an isolated resonance, the computation of Auger intensities involves matrix elements with one electron in the continuum. However, treating ionization and autoionization problems can be overwhelmingly complicated for nonexperts, because of many peculiarities, in comparison to bound-state electronic structure theory. One of the advantages of our approach is that by projecting the intensities on the atomic center bearing the core hole and using precalculated atomic radial two-electron integrals, the Auger decay rates can be easily obtained directly with OpenMolcas, avoiding the need to interface it with external programs to compute matrix elements with the photoelectron wave function. The implementation is tested on the Ne atom, for which numerous theoretical and experimental results are available for comparison, as well as on a set of prototype closed- and open-shell molecules, namely, CO, N₂, HNCO, H₂O, NO₂, and C₄N₂H₄ (pyrimidine).

Suppression of X-ray-Induced Radiation Damage to Biomolecules in Aqueous Environments by Immediate Intermolecular Decay of Inner-Shell Vacancies

The predominant reason for the damaging power of high-energy radiation is multiple ionization of a molecule, either direct or via the decay of highly excited intermediates, as, e.g., in the case of X-ray irradiation. Consequently, the molecule is irreparably damaged by the subsequent fragmentation in a Coulomb explosion. In an aqueous environment, however, it has been observed that irradiated molecules may be saved from fragmentation presumably by charge and energy dissipation mechanisms. Here, we show that the protective effect of the environment sets in even earlier than hitherto expected, namely immediately after single inner-shell ionization. By combining coincidence measurements of the fragmentation of X-ray-irradiated microsolvated pyrimidine molecules with theoretical calculations, we identify direct intermolecular electronic decay as the protective mechanism, outrunning the usually dominant Auger decay. Our results demonstrate that such processes play a key role in charge delocalization and have to be considered in investigations and models on high-energy radiation damage in realistic environments.

Fragmentation of isocyanic acid, HNCO, following core excitation and ionization

We report a study on the fragmentation of core-ionized and core-excited isocyanic acid, HNCO, using Auger-electron/photoion coincidence spectroscopy. Site-selectivity is observed both for normal and resonant Auger electron decay. Oxygen 1s ionization leads to the CO⁺ + NH⁺ ion pairs, while nitrogen 1s ionization results in three-body dissociation and an efficient fragmentation of the H-N bond in the dication. Upon 1s → 10a' resonant excitation, clear differences between O and N sites are discernible as well. In both cases, the correlation between the dissociation channel and the binding energy of the normal Auger electrons indicates that the fragmentation pattern is governed by the excess energy available in the final ionic state. High-level multireference calculations suggest pathways to the formation of the fragment ions NO⁺ and HCO⁺, which are observed although the parent compound contains neither N-O nor H-C bonds. This work contributes to the goal to achieve and understand site-selective fragmentation upon ionization and excitation of molecules with soft x-ray radiation.

Site-Selective Dissociation upon Sulfur L-Edge X-ray Absorption in a Gas-Phase Protonated Peptide

Site-selective dissociation induced by core photoexcitation of biomolecules is of key importance for the understanding of radiation damage processes and dynamics and for its promising use as "chemical scissors" in various applications. However, identifying products of site-selective dissociation in large molecules is challenging at the carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen edges because of the high recurrence of these atoms and related chemical groups. In this paper, we present the observation of site-selective dissociation at the sulfur L-edge in the gas-phase peptide methionine enkephalin, which contains only a single sulfur atom. Near-edge X-ray absorption mass spectrometry has revealed that the resonant S 2p → σ*_C-S excitation of the sulfur contained in the methionine side chain leads to site-selective dissociation, which is not the case after core ionization above the sulfur L-edge. The prospects of such results for the study of charge dynamics in biomolecular systems are discussed.

Observation of the fastest chemical processes in the radiolysis of water

Elementary processes associated with ionization of liquid water provide a framework for understanding radiation-matter interactions in chemistry and biology. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the dynamics of the hydrated electron, its partner arising from ionization of liquid water, H2O+, remains elusive. We used tunable femtosecond soft x-ray pulses from an x-ray free electron laser to reveal the dynamics of the valence hole created by strong-field ionization and to track the primary proton transfer reaction giving rise to the formation of OH. The isolated resonance associated with the valence hole (H2O+/OH) enabled straightforward detection. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the x-ray spectra are sensitive to structural dynamics at the ionization site. We found signatures of hydrated-electron dynamics in the x-ray spectrum.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations to Interpret the Molecular Fragmentation Induced in Deoxyribose by Synchrotron Soft X-Rays

It has been suggested that core ionization in DNA atoms could induce complex, irreparable damage. Synchrotron soft X-rays have been used to probe the damage induced by such events in thin films of DNA components. In a complementary approach, we investigate the fragmentation dynamics following a carbon or oxygen K-shell ionization in 2-deoxy-D-ribose (DR), a major component in the DNA chain. Core ionization of the sugars hydration layer is also studied. To that aim, we use state-of-the-art ab initio Density Functional Theory-based Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. The ultrafast dissociation dynamics of the core ionized molecule, prior Auger decay, is modeled for about 10 fs. We show that the core-ionization of oxygen atoms within DR or its hydration layer may induce proton transfers towards nearby molecules, before Auger decay. In a second step, we model an Auger effect occurring either at the beginning or at the end of the core–hole dynamics. Two electrons are removed from the deepest valence molecular orbitals localized on the initially core-ionized oxygen atom (O*), and this electronic state is propagated by means of Ehrenfest MD. We show an ultrafast dissociation of the DR2+ molecule C-O* bonds, which, in most cases, seems independent of the time at which Auger decay occurs.

Spectroscopic Signature of Chemical Bond Dissociation Revealed by Calculated Core-Electron Spectra

The advent of ultrashort soft X-ray pulse sources permits the use of established gas-phase spectroscopy methods to investigate ultrafast photochemistry in isolated molecules with element and site specificity. In the present study, we simulate excited-state wavepacket dynamics of a prototypical process, the ultrafast photodissociation of methyl iodide. Using the simulation, we calculate time-dependent excited-state carbon edge photoelectron and Auger electron spectra. We observe distinct signatures in both types of spectra and show their direct connection to C-I bond dissociation and charge rearrangement processes in the molecule. We demonstrate at the CH₃I molecule that the observed signatures allow us to map the time-dependent dynamics of ultrafast photoinduced bond breaking with unprecedented detail.

Energy-Dependent Relative Cross Sections in Carbon 1s Photoionization: Separation of Direct Shake and Inelastic Scattering Effects in Single Molecules

We demonstrate that the possibility of monitoring relative photoionization cross sections over a large photon energy range allows us to study and disentangle shake processes and intramolecular inelastic scattering effects. In this gas-phase study, relative intensities of the carbon 1s photoelectron lines from chemically inequivalent carbon atoms in the same molecule have been measured as a function of the incident photon energy in the range of 300-6000 eV. We present relative cross sections for the chemically shifted carbon 1s lines in the photoelectron spectra of ethyl trifluoroacetate (the "ESCA" molecule). The results are compared with those of methyl trifluoroacetate and S-ethyl trifluorothioacetate as well as a series of chloro-substituted ethanes and 2-butyne. In the soft X-ray energy range, the cross sections show an extended X-ray absorption fine structure type of wiggles, as was previously observed for a series of chloroethanes. The oscillations are damped in the hard X-ray energy range, but deviations of cross-section ratios from stoichiometry persist, even at high energies. The current findings are supported by theoretical calculations based on a multiple scattering model. The use of soft and tender X-rays provides a more complete picture of the dominant processes accompanying photoionization. Such processes reduce the main photoelectron line intensities by 20-60%. Using both energy ranges enabled us to discern the process of intramolecular inelastic scattering of the outgoing electron, whose significance is otherwise difficult to assess for isolated molecules. This effect relates to the notion of the inelastic mean free path commonly used in photoemission studies of clusters and condensed matter.
