Novel Interface in CuAg Nanostructure Induced by Size Effect

Revealing the alloying and dealloying behaviours in AuAg nanorods by thermal stimulus

Binary metallic nanocrystals are attractive as they offer an extra degree of freedom for structure and phase modulation to generate synergistic effects and extraordinary properties. However, whether the binary structures and phases at the nanoscale still follow the rules established on the bulk counterparts remains unclear. In this work, AuAg nanorods were used as a sample to probe into this issue. An in situ heating method by combining aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopes with a chip-based heating holder was employed to perform the heating experiments. It was found that the AuAg nanorods, which initially possessed heterostructures, can be designed and engineered to be gradient phase alloys with thermal pulses over 350 °C. Atomic diffusion inside the rod structures did not alter the shape of the rods but provided a route to fine-tune their properties. At higher temperatures, the discrepant sublimation behaviours between Au and Ag lead to dealloying of the nanorods. Durative sublimation of the Ag element can continuously tailor the lengths of the nanorods while concentrating the Au composition simultaneously. Especially, nearly pure Au nanocrystals can be obtained with the depletion of Ag by sublimation. These findings give insights into the nanoscale structure and phase behaviours in binary alloys and provide an alternative way to fine-tune their structure, phase, and properties.

Revealing the Phase Segregation and Evolution Dynamics in Binary Nanoalloys via Electron Beam-Assisted Ultrafast Heating and Cooling

Gas-phase synthesized binary nanoparticles (NPs) possess ultraclean surfaces, which benefit versatile uses in sensors and catalysts. However, precise control of their configuration and properties is still a big challenge because the growth mechanism and phase evolution dynamics in these NPs are very hard to unveil. Here, we report a strategy to investigate the phase evolution dynamics in binary NPs by using e-beam assisted ultrafast local heating and cooling inside a transmission electron microscope. With this strategy, the phase segregation and corresponding shape evolution of PbBi NPs are in situ revealed. It is found that the as-prepared PbBi alloy NPs will transform into heterostructures under e-beam stimulated structural relaxation, leading to the formation of featured Janus configurations with faceted Bi polyhedron parts and intermetallic hemisphere parts. During phase segregation, Pb₁Bi₁ and Pb₇Bi₃ phases are captured and identified, and a model of phase and shape evolution of PbBi nanoalloys is developed and contrasted with that of their bulk counterparts. These findings benefit the understanding of the phase dynamics of binary NPs and can provide in-depth information for engineering their structures for practical applications.

Interface Dynamics in Ag-Cu3P Nanoparticle Heterostructures

Earth-abundant transition metal phosphides are promising materials for energy-related applications. Specifically, copper(I) phosphide is such a material and shows excellent photocatalytic activity. Currently, there are substantial research efforts to synthesize well-defined metal-semiconductor nanoparticle heterostructures to enhance the photocatalytic performance by an efficient separation of charge carriers. The involved crystal facets and heterointerfaces have a major impact on the efficiency of a heterostructured photocatalyst, which points out the importance of synthesizing potential photocatalysts in a controlled manner and characterizing their structural and morphological properties in detail. In this study, we investigated the interface dynamics occurring around the synthesis of Ag-Cu3P nanoparticle heterostructures by a chemical reaction between Ag-Cu nanoparticle heterostructures and phosphine in an environmental transmission electron microscope. The major product of the Cu-Cu3P phase transformation using Ag-Cu nanoparticle heterostructures with a defined interface as a template preserved the initially present Ag{111} facet of the heterointerface. After the complete transformation, corner truncation of the faceted Cu3P phase led to a physical transformation of the nanoparticle heterostructure. In some cases, the structural rearrangement toward an energetically more favorable heterointerface has been observed and analyzed in detail at the atomic level. The herein-reported results will help better understand dynamic processes in Ag-Cu3P nanoparticle heterostructures and enable facet-engineered surface and heterointerface design to tailor their physical properties.

Understanding the strain-dependent structure of Cu nanocrystals in Ag-Cu nanoalloys

The structure of octahedral Ag-Cu nanoalloys is investigated by means of basin hopping Monte Carlo (BHMC) searches involving the optimization of shape and chemical ordering. Due to the significant size mismatch between Ag and Cu, the misfit strain plays a key role in determining the structure of Ag-Cu nanoalloys. At all the compositions, segregated chemical ordering is observed. However, the shape of the Cu nanocrystal and the associated defects are significantly different. At lower amounts of Cu (as little as 2 atom %), defects close to the surface are observed leading to a highly non-compact shape of the Cu nanocrystal which is non-trivial. The number of Cu-Cu bonds is relatively lower in the non-compact shape which is contrary to the preference of bulk Ag-Cu alloys to maximize the homo-atomic bonds. Due to the non-compact shape, {100} Ag-Cu interfaces are observed which are not expected. As the amount of Cu increases, the Cu nanocrystal undergoes a shape transition from non-compact to a compact octahedron. The associated defect structure is also modified. The structural changes due to the strain effects have been explained by calculating the atomic pressure maps and the bond length distributions. The trends relating to the structure have also been verified at larger sizes.

Silver nanomaterials: synthesis and (electro/photo) catalytic applications

In view of their unique characteristics and properties, silver nanomaterials (Ag NMs) have been used not only in the field of nanomedicine but also for diverse advanced catalytic technologies. In this comprehensive review, light is shed on general synthetic approaches encompassing chemical reduction, sonochemical, microwave, and thermal treatment among the preparative methods for the syntheses of Ag-based NMs and their catalytic applications. Additionally, some of the latest innovative approaches such as continuous flow integrated with MW and other benign approaches have been emphasized that ultimately pave the way for sustainability. Moreover, the potential applications of emerging Ag NMs, including sub nanomaterials and single atoms, in the field of liquid-phase catalysis, photocatalysis, and electrocatalysis as well as a positive role of Ag NMs in catalytic reactions are meticulously summarized. The scientific interest in the synthesis and applications of Ag NMs lies in the integrated benefits of their catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and recovery. Therefore, the rise and journey of Ag NM-based catalysts will inspire a new generation of chemists to tailor and design robust catalysts that can effectively tackle major environmental challenges and help to replace noble metals in advanced catalytic applications. This overview concludes by providing future perspectives on the research into Ag NMs in the arena of electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.

Mapping Composition-Selectivity Relationships of Supported Sub-10 nm Cu-Ag Nanocrystals for High-Rate CO2 Electroreduction

Colloidal Cu-Ag nanocrystals measuring less than 10 nm across are promising candidates for integration in hybrid CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) interfaces, especially in the context of tandem catalysis and selective multicarbon (C₂-C₃) product formation. In this work, we vary the synthetic-ligand/copper molar ratio from 0.1 to 1.0 and the silver/copper atomic ratio from 0 to 0.7 and study the variations in the nanocrystals' size distribution, morphology and reactivity at rates of ≥100 mA cm^-2 in a gas-fed recycle electrolyzer operating under neutral to mildly basic conditions (0.1-1.0 M KHCO₃). High-resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy are used in order to characterize the morphology of sub-10 nm Cu-Ag nanodimers and core-shells and to elucidate trends in Ag coverage and surface composition. It is shown that Cu-Ag nanocrystals can be densely dispersed onto a carbon black support without the need for immediate ligand removal or binder addition, which considerably facilitates their application. Although CO₂RR product distribution remains an intricate function of time, (kinetic) overpotential and processing conditions, we nevertheless conclude that the ratio of oxygenates to hydrocarbons (which depends primarily on the initial dispersion of the nanocrystals and their composition) rises 3-fold at moderate Ag atom % relative to Cu NCs-based electrodes. Finally, the merits of this particular Cu-Ag/C system and the recycling reactor employed are utilized to obtain maximum C₂-C₃ partial current densities of 92-140 mA cm^-2 at -1.15 V_RHE and liquid product concentrations in excess of 0.05 wt % in 1 M KHCO₃ after short electrolysis periods.

How interface properties control the equilibrium shape of core-shell Fe-Au and Fe-Ag nanoparticles

While combining two metals in the same nanoparticle can lead to remarkable novel applications, the resulting structure in terms of crystallinity and shape remains difficult to predict. It is thus essential to provide a detailed atomistic picture of the underlying growth processes. In the present work we address the case of core-shell Fe-Au and Fe-Ag nanoparticles. Interface properties between Fe and the noble metals Au and Ag, computed using DFT, were used to parameterize Fe-Au and Fe-Ag pairwise interactions in combination with available many-body potentials for the pure elements. The growth of Au or Ag shells on nanometric Fe cores with prescribed shapes was then modelled by means of Monte Carlo simulations. The shape of the obtained Fe-Au nanoparticles is found to strongly evolve with the amount of metal deposited on the Fe core, a transition from the polyhedral Wulff shape of bare iron to a cubic shape taking place as the amount of deposited gold exceeds two monolayers. In striking contrast, the growth of silver proceeds in a much more anisotropic, Janus-like way and with a lesser dependence on the iron core shape. In both cases, the predicted morphologies are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations in which the nanoparticles are grown by physical deposition methods. Understanding the origin of these differences, which can be traced back to subtle variations in the electronic structure of the Au/Fe and Ag/Fe interfaces, should further contribute to the better design of core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles.

Self-Limiting Shell Formation in Cu@Ag Core-Shell Nanocrystals during Galvanic Replacement

The understanding of synthetic pathways of bimetallic nanocrystals remains limited due to the complex energy landscapes and dynamics involved. In this work, we investigate the formation of self-limiting Cu@Ag core-shell nanoparticles starting from Cu nanocrystals followed by galvanic replacement with Ag ions. Bulk quantification with atomic emission spectroscopy and spatially resolved elemental mapping with electron microscopy reveal distinct nucleation regimes that produce nanoparticles with a tunable Ag shell thickness, but only up to a certain limiting thickness. We develop a quantitative transport model that explains this observed self-limiting structure as arising from the balance between entropy-driven interdiffusion and a positive mixing enthalpy. The proposed model depends only on the intrinsic physical properties of the system such as diffusivity and mixing energy and directly yields a high level of agreement with the elemental mapping profiles without requiring additional fit parameters.

The synthesis and catalytic activity of bimetallic CuAg nanoparticles and their magnetic hybrid composite materials

Bimetallic CuAg nanoparticles were synthesized using uric acid as a stabilizer, Fe₃O₄ loaded CuAg nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄–CuAg NPs) were also fabricated, and the morphology and content of both CuAg NPs and Fe₃O₄–CuAg NPs were investigated.
