Superior Thermoelectric Performance of Ordered Double Transition Metal MXenes: Cr2TiC2T2 (T = -OH or -F)

Beyond metals: theoretical discovery of semiconducting MAX phases and their potential application in thermoelectrics

MAX phase is a family of ceramic compounds, typically known for their metallic properties. However, we show here that some of them may be narrow bandgap semiconductors. Using a series of first-principles calculations, we have investigated the electronic structures of 861 dynamically stable MAX phases. Notably, Sc2SC, Y2SC, Y2SeC, Sc3AuC2, and Y3AuC2 have been identified as semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 eV. Furthermore, we have assessed the thermodynamic stability of these systems by generating ternary phase diagrams utilizing evolutionary algorithm techniques. Their dynamic stabilities are confirmed by phonon calculations. Additionally, we have explored the potential thermoelectric efficiencies of these materials by combining Boltzmann transport theory with first-principles calculations. The relaxation times are estimated using scattering theory. The zT coefficients for the aforementioned systems fall within the range of 0.5 to 2.5 at temperatures spanning from 300 to 700 K, indicating their suitability for high-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Symmetry lowering through surface engineering and improved thermoelectric properties in Janus MXenes

Despite ample evidence of their influence on the transport properties of two-dimensional solids, the interrelations of reduced symmetry, electronic and thermal transport have rarely been discussed in the context of thermoelectric materials. With the motivation to design new thermoelectric materials with improved properties, we have addressed these by performing first-principles density functional theory based calculations in conjunction with semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory on a number of compounds in the MXene family. The symmetry lowering in parent M2CO2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Mo) MXenes is achieved by replacing the transition metal M on one surface, resulting in Janus compounds MM'CO2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf and M' = Mo, Zr, Hf; M ≠ M'). Our calculations show that the thermoelectric figure-of-merit can be improved significantly by such surface engineering. We discuss in detail, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the origin behind high thermoelectric parameters for these compounds. Our in-depth analysis shows that the modifications in the electronic band structures and degree of anharmonicity driven by the dispersions in the bond strengths due to the lowering of symmetry, an artefact of surface engineering, are the factors behind the trends in the thermoelectric parameters of the MXenes considered. The results also substantiate that the compositional flexibility offered by the MXene family of compounds can generate a complex interplay of symmetry, electronic structure, bond strength and anharmonicity which can be exploited to engineer thermoelectric materials with improved properties.

Fast access of the lattice thermal conductivity and phonon quasiparticle spectra of Mo2TiC2T2 (T = -O and -F) and Janus Mo2TiC2OF MXenes from machine learning potentials

The presence of strong anharmonic effects in surface functionalized MXenes greatly challenges the use of harmonic lattice dynamics calculations to predict their phonon spectra and lattice thermal conductivity at finite temperatures. Herein, we demonstrate the workflow for training and validating machine learning potentials in terms of moment tensor potential (MTP) for MXenes including Mo2TiC2, Mo2TiC2O2, Mo2TiC2F2 and Janus-Mo2TiC2OF monolayers. Then, the MTPs of MXenes are successfully combined with the harmonic lattice dynamics calculations to obtain the temperature renormalized phonon spectra, three-phonon scattering rates, phonon relaxation times and lattice thermal conductivity at finite temperatures. Furthermore, combining MTPs with classic molecular dynamics simulations at finite temperatures directly enables the calculation of phonon quasi-particle spectral energy density with a full inclusion of all anharmonic effects in MXenes. Our current results indicate that anharmonic effects are found to be relatively weak in Mo2TiC2 and Mo2TiC2O2 monolayers, whereas the phonon quasi-particle spectral energy densities largely resemble those of harmonic or renormalized lattice dynamics calculations. Significant broadening of spectral energy density at finite temperature is predicted for Mo2TiC2F2 and Janus-Mo2TiC2OF monolayers, implying strong anharmonic effects in those MXenes. Our work paves a new way for fast and reliable calculation of the phonon scattering process and lattice thermal conductivity of MXenes within MTPs trained from first-principles molecular dynamics simulations in the future.

Changing the spin disorder of two-dimensional magnetic Cr2TiC2Tx to long-range order through noble metal adhesion

To enhance the use of Cr2TiC2Tx MXene in spin electronics, it is essential to transform its spin-disordered state into a long-range ordered spin state. In this study, first-principles calculations show that Rh layers adhered to the Cr2TiC2Tx surfaces can transform its spin disordered state into a long-range spin order by donating electrons to the O terminations, resulting in Cr2TiC2Tx becoming a single-layer A-type antiferromagnet. As the proportion of F termination increases from 0 to 100%, the exchange coupling constant J1 of the compound escalates from 0.5 to 15.9 meV. Concurrently, the Néel temperature experiences a significant rise from 8 K to 110 K. The analysis of the density of states reveals that the obtained Cr2TiC2Tx exhibits excellent conductivity with O termination and semiconductor characteristics with F termination. These unique features make Cr2TiC2Tx a promising magnetic material for application in spin electronics.

Recent Progress in Screening of Mycotoxins in Foods and Other Commodities Using MXenes-Based Nanomaterials

Mycotoxin pollution in agricultural food products endangers animal and human health during the supply chains, therefore the development of accurate and rapid techniques for the determination of mycotoxins is of great importance for food safety guarantee. MXenes-based nanoprobes have attracted enormous attention as a complementary analysis and promising alternative strategies to conventional diagnostic methods, because of their fascinating features, like high electrical conductivity, various surface functional groups, high surface area, superb thermal resistance, good hydrophilicity, and environmentally-friendlier characteristics. In this study, we outline the state-of-the-art research on MXenes-based probes in detecting various mycotoxins like aflatoxin, ochratoxin, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, and other toxins as a most commonly founded mycotoxin in the agri-food supply chain. First, we present the diverse synthesis approaches and exceptional characteristics of MXenes. Afterward, based on the detecting mechanism, we divide the biosensing utilizations of MXenes into two subcategories: electrochemical, and optical biosensors. Then their performance in effective sensing of mycotoxins is comprehensively deliberated. Finally, present challenges and prospective opportunities for MXenes are debated.

Progress and challenges of emerging MXene based materials for thermoelectric applications

To realize sustainable development, more and more countries forwarded carbon neutrality goal. Accordingly, improving the utilization efficiency of traditional fossil fuel is an effective strategy for this great goal. Keeping this in mind, developing thermoelectric devices to recover waste heat energy resulted in the consumption process of fuel is demonstrated to be promising. High performance thermoelectric devices require advanced materials. MXenes are a kind of 2D materials with a layered structure, which demonstrate excellent thermoelectric performance owing to their unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. Also, substantial achievement has been gained during the past few years in synthesizing MXene based materials for thermoelectric devices. In this review, the mainstream synthetic routes of MXene from etching MAX were summarized. Significantly, the current state and challenges of research on improving the performance of MXene based thermoelectrics are explored, including pristine MXene and MXene based composites.

Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskites Cs2BI6 (B = Pt, Pd, Te, Sn): An Emerging Class of Thermoelectric Materials

Vacancy-ordered double perovskites (A₂BX₆), being one of the environmentally friendly and stable alternatives to lead halide perovskites, have garnered considerable research attention in the scientific community. However, their thermal transport has not been explored much, despite their potential applications. Here, we explore Cs₂BI₆ (B = Pt, Pd, Te, Sn) as potential thermoelectric materials using state-of-the-art first-principles-based methodologies, viz., density functional theory combined with many-body perturbation theory (G₀W₀) and spin-orbit coupling. The absence of polyhedral connectivity in vacancy-ordered perovskites gives rise to additional degrees of freedom, leading to lattice anharmonicity. The presence of anharmonic lattice dynamics leads to strong electron-phonon coupling, which is well-captured by the Fröhlich mesoscopic model. The lattice anharmonicity is further studied using ab initio molecular dynamics and the electron localization function. The maximum anharmonicity is observed in Cs₂PtI₆, followed by Cs₂PdI₆, Cs₂TeI₆, and Cs₂SnI₆. Also, the computed average thermoelectric figure of merit (zT) for Cs₂PtI₆, Cs₂PdI₆, Cs₂TeI₆, and Cs₂SnI₆ is 0.88, 0.85, 0.95, and 0.78, respectively, which reveals their promising renewable energy applications.

Tuning the Magnetic Properties of Cr2TiC2Tx through Surface Terminations: A Theoretical Study

Recently, magnetic two-dimensional Cr₂TiC₂T_x MXenes with promising applications in spin electronics have been experimentally confirmed. However, the underlying magnetic mechanism needs to be further investigated. Along these lines, in this work, the magnetic properties of Cr₂TiC₂O_n/4F_2-n/4 and Cr₂TiC₂O_n/4 structures were simulated through first-principle calculations using the GGA+U approach. The values of 4.1 and 3.1 eV were calculated for the Hubbard U of Cr and Ti, respectively, by applying the linear response method. Interestingly, the Cr₂TiC₂O_n/4F_2-n/4-based configurations with low O content (n ≤ 4) exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior, while the majority of the respective configurations with high O content (n ≥ 5) are ferromagnetic. As far as the Cr₂TiC₂O_5/4F_3/4 structure (n = 5) is concerned, the value of about 2.64 μ_B was estimated for the magnetic moment of the Cr atom. On top of that, the Curie temperature lies within the range of 10~47 K. The extracted theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental outcomes of the Cr₂TiC₂O_1.3F_0.8-based structure. From the simulated results, it can be also argued that the magnetic moment of Cr atoms and the Neel temperature can be directly tuned by the active content of O atoms. The conductivity of both Cr₂TiC₂O_n/4F_2-n/4 and Cr₂TiC₂O_n/4 configurations can be regulated by the externally applied magnetic field, while the density of states around the Fermi level shifted significantly between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic arrangements. The acquired results provide important theoretical insights to tuning the magnetic properties of Cr₂TiC₂T_x-based structures through surface termination mechanisms, which are quite significant for their potential applications in spin electronics.

Giant tunneling magnetoresistance in two-dimensional magnetic tunnel junctions based on double transition metal MXene ScCr2C2F2

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes) with intrinsic magnetism and half-metallic features show great promising applications for spintronic and magnetic devices, for instance, achieving perfect spin-filtering in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). Herein, combining density functional theory calculations and nonequilibrium Green's function simulations, we systematically investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of 2D double transition metal MXene ScCr₂C₂F₂-based vdW MTJs, where ScCr₂C₂F₂ acts as the spin-filter tunnel barriers, 1T-MoS₂ acts as the electrode and 2H-MoS₂ as the tunnel barrier. We found that the spin-up electrons in the parallel configuration state play a decisive role in the transmission behavior. We found that all the constructed MTJs could hold large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios over 9 × 10⁵%. Especially, the maximum giant TMR ratio of 6.95 × 10⁶% can be found in the vdW MTJ with trilayer 2H-MoS₂ as the tunnel barrier. These results indicate the potential for spintronic applications of vdW MTJs based on 2D double transition metal MXene ScCr₂C₂F₂.

Thermal Properties of MXenes and Relevant Applications

The properties and applications of MXenes (a family of layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides) have aroused enormous research interests for a decade since the successful synthesis of few-layer transition metal carbides in 2011. Though MXenes, as the building blocks, have already been applied in various fields (such as wearable electronics) owing to the distinctive optical, mechanical and electrical properties, their thermal stability and intrinsic thermal properties were less thoroughly investigated compared to other characteristics in early reports. The pioneering theoretical prediction of the thermoelectric nature of MXenes was performed in 2013 while the first experiment-based report concerning the degradation behavior of the 2D structure at elevated temperatures in a controlled atmosphere was published in 2015, followed by numerous discoveries regarding the thermal properties of MXenes. Herein, after a brief description of the synthesis, this Review summarized the latest insights into the thermal stability and thermophysical properties of MXenes, and further associated these unique properties with relevant applications by multiple examples. Finally, current hurdles and challenges in this field were provided along with some advices on potential research directions in the future.

MXenes for Energy Harvesting

Energy harvesting modules play an increasingly important role in the development of autonomous self-powered microelectronic devices. MXenes (i.e., 2D transition metal carbide/nitride) have recently emerged as promising candidates for energy applications due to their excellent electronic conductivity, large specific surface area, and tunable properties. Herein, a perspective on using MXenes to harvest energy from various sources in the environment is presented. First, the characteristics of MXenes that facilitate energy capturing are systematically introduced and the preparation strategies of MXenes and their derived nanostructures tailored toward such applications are summarized. Subsequently, the harvesting mechanism of different energy sources (e.g., solar energy, thermoelectric energy, triboelectric energy, piezoelectric energy, salinity-gradient energy, electrokinetic energy, ultrasound energy, and humidity energy) are discussed. Then, the recent progress of MXene-based nanostructures in energy harvesting, as well as their applications, is introduced. Finally, opinions on the existing challenges and future directions of MXene-based nanostructure for energy harvesting are presented.

3-X Structural Model and Common Characteristics of Anomalous Thermal Transport: The Case of Two-Dimensional Boron Carbides

Improving the reliability of electronic devices requires effective heat management, and the key is the relationship between the thermal transport and temperature. Inspired by synthesized T-carbon and H-boron, the 3-X structural models are proposed to unify the two-dimensional (2D) multitriangle materials. Employing structural searches, we identify the stability of the 3-X configuration in 2D boron carbides as 3-9 BC₃ monolayer, which, unexpectedly, exhibits a linear thermal conductivity versus temperature, not the traditional ∼1/T trend. We summarize the common characteristics and explore why this behavior is absent in 3-9 AlC₃ and graphene via investigating the optical modes. We show that the linear behavior is a direct consequence of the special oscillation modes by the 3-X model associated with the largest group velocity. We find that 2D materials with such behavior usually share a relatively low thermal conductivity. Our work paves the way to deeply understand the lattice thermal transport and to widen nanoelectronic applications.

Nb2CTx MXene as High-Performance Energy Storage Material with Na, K, and Liquid K-Na Alloy Anodes

Two-dimensional MXenes perform well as hosts in batteries, which are promising for next-generation energy storage materials. With low price and high performance, sodium (Na) and potassium (K) own the potential to replace lithium in energy storage devices, but the larger radii and dendrite growth restrict their commercialization. Herein, we successfully synthesized an accordion-like Nb₂CT_x MXene, whose crystal structure integrity and lamellar separation have been confirmed by characterization methods like high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Combined with solid Na and K and liquid K-Na alloy as anodes, the Nb₂CT_x MXene shows excellent electrochemical performance, such as high capacity retention after large current shock in tests of rate performance and long time stability for more than 500 cycles, etc. Also, the Nb₂CT_x MXene coupled with liquid K-Na anode performs better than that coupled with solid K for the dendrite-controlling character of the liquid electrode. The Nb₂CT_x MXene would boost the exploitation of more suitable host materials for Na/K-ion batteries and promote an in-depth understanding of MXenes.

MXenes for Rechargeable Batteries Beyond the Lithium-Ion

Research on next-generation battery technologies (beyond Li-ion batteries, or LIBs) has been accelerating over the past few years. A key challenge for these emerging batteries has been the lack of suitable electrode materials, which severely limits their further developments. MXenes, a new class of 2D transition metal carbides, carbonitrides, and nitrides, are proposed as electrode materials for these emerging batteries due to several desirable attributes. These attributes include large and tunable interlayer spaces, excellent hydrophilicity, extraordinary conductivity, compositional diversity, and abundant surface chemistries, making MXenes promising not only as electrode materials but also as other components in the cells of emerging batteries. Herein, an overview and assessment of the utilization of MXenes in rechargeable batteries beyond LIBs, including alkali-ion (e.g., Na⁺ , K⁺ ) storage, multivalent-ion (e.g., Mg²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , and Al³⁺ ) storage, and metal batteries are presented. In particular, the synthetic strategies and properties of MXenes that enable MXenes to play various roles as electrodes, metal anode protective layers, sulfur hosts, separator modification layers, and conductive additives in these emerging batteries are discussed. Moreover, a perspective on promising future research directions on MXenes and MXene-based materials, ranging from material design and processing, fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms, to device performance optimization strategies is provided.

A high-throughput assessment of the adsorption capacity and Li-ion diffusion dynamics in Mo-based ordered double-transition-metal MXenes as anode materials for fast-charging LIBs

Utilizing the latest SCAN-rVV10 density functional, we thoroughly assess the electrochemical properties of 35 Mo-based ordered double transition metal MXenes, including clean Mo2MC2 (M = Sc, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta) and surface functionalized structures Mo2MC2T2 (T = H, O, F and OH), for the potential use as anode materials in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The first principles molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the calculations of the site adsorption preferences for Li atoms on all investigated MXenes reveal that both Li-saturated adsorption structures and theoretical capacities of Mo-based MXenes are fundamentally influenced by the surface terminations. We find that the adsorption of Li atoms on either -OH or -F functionalized MXenes is chemically unstable. In particular, the F-groups prefer to form a separate fluoride layer with Li atoms, detaching from the Mo2MC2 substrates. The Li atoms could form a stable single adsorption layer on the -H, -O and intrinsic MXenes surface, exhibiting theoretical capacities in the range from 121 mA h g-1 to 195 mA h g-1. Besides -F and -OH terminations, the remaining Mo-based MXenes also possess superior flat open circuit voltage (OCV) profiles with the most reversible storage capacity below 1.0 V during the charging/discharging cycles. We further predict the low barrier heights of Li-ion diffusion, at a range of 0.03-0.06 eV for most Mo-based MXenes except -O and -H terminations, exceeding that of graphene or Ti3C2. Furthermore, combining the Vineyard transition state theory (TST) with the phonon spectra obtained from density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), the mean planar diffusion coefficient is calculated to be 2 × 10-8 m2 s-1 at 300 K for intrinsic Mo2MC2 monolayers. Although the overall specific capacity is fundamentally restricted with the relatively heavy molecular mass of MXenes, we conclude that Mo-based structures, especially the intrinsic Mo2MC2 (M = Sc, Ti, V) monolayers, might be promising anode materials from the aspect of fast charging/discharging application for LIBs.
