Interfacial and Emulsion Characteristics of Oil-Water Systems in the Presence of Polymeric Lignin Surfactant

Pickering emulsion stabilization with colloidal lignin is enhanced by salt-induced networking in the aqueous phase

We study the effect of electrolytes on the stability in aqueous media of spherical lignin particles (LP) and its relevance to Pickering emulsion stabilization. Factors considered included the role of ionic strength on morphology development, LP size distribution, surface charge, interfacial adsorption, colloidal and wetting behaviors. Stable emulsions are formed at salt concentrations as low as 50 mM, with the highest stability observed at a critical concentration (400 mM). We show salt-induced destabilization of LP aqueous dispersions at an ionic strength >400 mM. At this critical concentration LP flocculation takes place and particulate networks are formed. This has a profound consequence on the stability of LP-stabilized Pickering emulsions, affecting rheology and long-term stability. The results along with quartz microgravimetry and confocal microscopy observations suggest a possible mechanism for stabilization that considers the interfacial adsorption of LP at oil/water interfaces. The often-unwanted colloidal LP destabilization in water ensues remarkably stable Pickering emulsions by the effect of network formation.

Interfacial Adsorption of Oil-Soluble Kraft Lignin and Stabilization of Water-in-Oil Emulsions

In this paper, the potential of esterified Kraft lignin as a novel oil-soluble surfactant was examined. The lignin was chemically modified by esterification with lauric or stearic acid, making it soluble in solvents such as toluene or n-decane. Adsorption at the oil-water interface was then studied by the Du Noüy ring-method. The oil-soluble lignin behaved similar to water-soluble lignin surfactants, both the qualitative and quantitative progression of interfacial tension. Modeling revealed a surface excess of 7.5-9.0 × 10-7 mol/m2, area per molecule of 185-222 Å2, and a diffusion coefficient within the range 10-10 to 10-14 m2/s; all of which are in line with existing literature on water-soluble lignosulfonates. The data further suggested that the pendant alkyl chains were extended well into the paraffinic solvent. At last, bottle tests showed that the oil-soluble lignin was able to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions. The emulsion stability was affected by the concentration of lignin or NaCl as well as the oil phase composition. Aromatic oils exhibited lower emulsion stability in comparison to the aliphatic oil. In conclusion, a new type of surfactant was synthesized and studied, which may contribute to developing green surfactants and novel approaches to valorize technical lignin.

RAFT Polymer-Based Surfactants for Minerals Recovery

Reagent consumption is an ongoing sustainability challenge for the mineral processing industry. There is a need to recover, regenerate, and reuse as many of the chemical inputs as possible. This study investigated the design and synthesis via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of a novel polymer for use as a surfactant in a water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion system for ultrafine minerals recovery. The polymers were designed to hold a thermoresponsive moiety to allow for future recovery. The performance of the novel emulsion was tested for agglomeration of ultrafine talc mineral particles. A traditional emulsion containing sorbitan monooleate as the surfactant was used as a research benchmark to compare against the novel emulsion's stability and performance in minerals recovery. The novel RAFT polymer-based emulsions formed large and stable water droplets surrounded by a halo of smaller water droplets. Over time, the smaller droplets coalesced and a more uniform size distribution of droplets was formed, keeping the emulsion stable. Rheological testing of freshly made and aged emulsions showed both traditional and novel emulsions to have a high viscosity at a low shear rate. RAFT polymer B with a hydrophilic-lipophilic block ratio of 5:10 performed adequately as a surfactant replacement to stabilize w/o emulsions. The mineral recovery using the novel emulsion was on par with the traditional emulsions. The novel RAFT emulsion containing 2.5 wt % polymer B achieved 90% minerals recovery, a similar yield to the traditional emulsions. This study demonstrates that surfactants containing stimuli-responsive moieties can be synthesized via RAFT polymerization and successfully used in mineral processing applications to recover ultrafine particles. Work is ongoing to exploit the stimuli responsiveness to recover the polymer surfactant for reuse.

Lignins as Promising Renewable Biopolymers and Bioactive Compounds for High-Performance Materials

The recycling of biomass into high-value-added materials requires important developments in research and technology to create a sustainable circular economy. Lignin, as a component of biomass, is a multipurpose aromatic polymer with a significant potential to be used as a renewable bioresource in many fields in which it acts both as promising biopolymer and bioactive compound. This comprehensive review gives brief insights into the recent research and technological trends on the potential of lignin development and utilization. It is divided into ten main sections, starting with an outlook on its diversity; main properties and possibilities to be used as a raw material for fuels, aromatic chemicals, plastics, or thermoset substitutes; and new developments in the use of lignin as a bioactive compound and in nanoparticles, hydrogels, 3D-printing-based lignin biomaterials, new sustainable biomaterials, and energy production and storage. In each section are presented recent developments in the preparation of lignin-based biomaterials, especially the green approaches to obtaining nanoparticles, hydrogels, and multifunctional materials as blends and bio(nano)composites; most suitable lignin type for each category of the envisaged products; main properties of the obtained lignin-based materials, etc. Different application categories of lignin within various sectors, which could provide completely sustainable energy conversion, such as in agriculture and environment protection, food packaging, biomedicine, and cosmetics, are also described. The medical and therapeutic potential of lignin-derived materials is evidenced in applications such as antimicrobial, antiviral, and antitumor agents; carriers for drug delivery systems with controlled/targeting drug release; tissue engineering and wound healing; and coatings, natural sunscreen, and surfactants. Lignin is mainly used for fuel, and, recently, studies highlighted more sustainable bioenergy production technologies, such as the supercapacitor electrode, photocatalysts, and photovoltaics.

Functional Lignin Building Blocks: Reactive Vinyl Esters with Acrylic Acid

Introducing vinyl groups onto the backbone of technical lignin provides an opportunity to create highly reactive renewable polymers suitable for radical polymerization. In this work, the chemical modification of softwood kraft lignin was pursued with etherification, followed by direct esterification with acrylic acid (AA). In the first step, phenolic hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups were derivatized into aliphatic hydroxyl groups using ethylene carbonate and an alkaline catalyst. The lignin was subsequently fractionated using a downward precipitation method to recover lignin of defined molar mass and solubility. After recovery, the resulting material was then esterified with AA, resulting in lignin with vinyl functional groups. The first step resulted in approximately 90% of phenolic hydroxyl groups being converted into aliphatic hydroxyls, while the downward fractionation resulted in three samples of lignin with defined molar masses. For the esterification reaction, the weight ratio of reagents, reaction temperature, and reaction time were evaluated as factors that would influence the modification efficacy. ¹³C NMR spectroscopy analysis of lignin samples before and after esterification showed that the optimized reaction conditions could reach approximately 40% substitution of aliphatic hydroxyl groups. Both steps only used lignin and the modifying reagent (no solvent), with the possibility of recovery and reuse of the reagent by dilution and distillation. An additional second esterification step of the resulting lignin sample with acetic acid or propionic acid converted 90% of remaining hydroxyl groups into short-chain carbon aliphatic esters, making a hydrophobic material suitable for further copolymerization with synthetic hydrophobic monomers.

Extraction and Surfactant Properties of Glyoxylic Acid-Functionalized Lignin

The amphiphilic chemical structure of native lignin, composed by a hydrophobic aromatic core and hydrophilic hydroxy groups, makes it a promising alternative for the development of bio-based surface-active compounds. However, the severe conditions traditionally needed during biomass fractionation make lignin prone to condensation and cause it to lose hydrophilic hydroxy groups in favour of the formation of C-C bonds, ultimately decreasing lignin's abilities to lower surface tension of water/oil mixtures. Therefore, it is often necessary to further functionalize lignin in additional synthetic steps in order to obtain a surfactant with suitable properties. In this work, multifunctional aldehyde-assisted fractionation with glyoxylic acid (GA) was used to prevent lignin condensation and simultaneously introduce a controlled amount of carboxylic acid on the lignin backbone for its further use as surfactant. After fully characterizing the extracted GA-lignin, its surface activity was measured in several water/oil systems at different pH values. Then, the stability of water/mineral oil emulsions was evaluated at different pH and over a course of 30 days by traditional photography and microscopy imaging. Further, the use of GA-lignin as a surfactant was investigated in the formulation of a cosmetic hand cream composed of industrially relevant ingredients. Contrary to industrial lignins such as Kraft lignin, GA-lignin did not alter the color or smell of the formulation. Finally, the surface activity of GA-lignin was compared with other lignin-based and fossil-based surfactants, showing that GA-lignin presented similar or better surface-active properties compared to some of the most commonly used surfactants. The overall results showed that GA-lignin, a biopolymer that can be made exclusively from renewable carbon, can successfully be extracted in one step from lignocellulosic biomass. This lignin can be used as an effective surfactant without further modification, and as such is a promising candidate for the development of new bio-based surface-active products.

Microfluidic preparation of a novel phoxim nanoemulsion pesticide against Spodoptera litura

With continuous development of pesticide dosage forms, emulsifiable concentrates using large amounts of organic solvents are gradually obsoleted. Nanoemulsions with high water content have been developed and the preparation processes also evolved, but these processes still exist some problems, such as poor controllability and high energy consumption. Microfluidic is a controllable nanoemulsion preparation system which mainly applied to pharmaceutical synthesis. In this study, the pesticide phoxim nanoemulsion was prepared by microfluidic technology. The optimized formulation of phoxim nanoemulsion was composed of Tween 80 and pesticide emulsifier 500 as surfactant, hexyl acetate as oil, and n-propanol as co-surfactant. Moreover, when the flow rates of water and oil in the microfluidic system were adjusted to 5 μL/min and 20 μL/min, phoxim nanoemulsion was obtained with a cloud point/boiling point of 109 °C, a particle size of 21.5 ± 0.8 nm and a potential value of - 18.7 ± 0.6 mV. Furthermore, the nanoemulsion had a rapid release effect in vitro which could be fitted by the Ritger-Peppas model. The feeding toxicity of the phoxim nanoemulsion was higher than that of commercial formulation while the contact killing effect was higher than that of the active ingredient. Therefore, pesticide dosage was reduced and the insecticidal effect was enhanced by using phoxim nanoemulsions. These results also confirm the potential of microfluidics as a green process to produce pesticide nanoemulsions.

Recent Studies on the Preparation and Application of Ionic Amphiphilic Lignin: A Comprehensive Review

As the second most abundant natural polymer after cellulose, lignin has received considerable attention recently due to its reproducibility, safety, and biodegradability. Studies are now focusing on the development of new lignin applications to replace petroleum-based chemicals. Unfortunately, lignin has several inherent problems, such as poor water solubility and a tendency to agglomerate. However, after chemical modification, lignin can gain new functions through the introduction of new functional groups. For example, amphiphilic lignin is a polymer that is soluble in both water and organic solvents. Amphiphilic lignin polymers can be divided into anionic, cationic, and anionic-cationic amphoteric lignin-based polymers, according to the ions contained in their molecular structure. Amphiphilic lignin polymers also have a wide range of applications in various industrial fields and can be used as wetting agents, detergents, controlled release fertilizers, adsorbents, and emulsifiers. Thus, this article reviews research progress on the synthesis and applications of amphiphilic lignin-derived polymers over the past 10 years, providing a theoretical reference for the utilization of high-added-value and high-performance lignin.

Lignin valorization: Status, challenges and opportunities

As an abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin has the potential to produce various chemicals, biofuels of interest through biorefinery activities and is expected to benefit the future circular economy. However, lignin valorization is hindered by a series of constraints such as heterogeneous polymeric nature, intrinsic recalcitrance, strong smell, dark colour, challenges in lignocelluloses fractionation and the presence of high bond dissociation enthalpies in its functional groups etc. Nowadays, industrial lignin is mostly combusted for electricity production and the recycling of inorganic compounds involved in the pulping process. Given the research and development on lignin valorization in recent years, important applications such as lignin-based hydrogels, surfactants, three-dimensional printing materials, electrodes and production of fine chemicals have been systematically reviewed. Finally, this review highlights the main constraints affecting industrial lignin valorization, possible solutions and future perspectives, in the light of its abundance and its potential applications reported in the scientific literature.
