Impact of Polyelectrolyte Chemistry on the Thermodynamic Stability of Oppositely Charged Macromolecule/Surfactant Mixtures

Structuring liquids through solvent-assisted interfacial association of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and amphiphiles

HYPOTHESIS

Sculpting liquids into different shapes is usually based on the interfacial interactions of functionalized nanoparticles or polymers with specific ligands, leading to exciting material properties due to the combination of the mobility of liquid components with the solid-like characteristic of the arrested liquid/liquid interface. There is an intense interest in novel structured liquids produced from simple compounds with versatile application potentials. Complexes of oppositely charged commercial polyelectrolytes and traditional aliphatic surfactants are good candidates for this goal since they reveal rich structural features and could adsorb at various interfaces. However, they have not been applied yet for structuring liquids.

EXPERIMENTS

The interfacial interactions and film formation between aqueous sodium poly(styrene) sulfonate solutions (NaPSS) and hexadecylamine (HDA) solutions in various alkanols were investigated by surface tension measurements and ATR-IR spectroscopy. 3D printing experiments also assessed the robustness of the formed films.

FINDINGS

Arrested fatty alcohol/water interfaces were formed due to the interfacial association of NaPSS, HDA, and alkanol molecules, which also act as cosurfactants in the surface region. These solid films enable the synthesis of temperature-sensitive all-in-liquid constructs and offer alternatives to bulk polyion/mixed surfactant assemblies prepared earlier through numerous synthesis steps.

Role of Polyanions and Surfactant Head Group in the Formation of Polymer-Colloid Nanocontainers

OBJECTIVES

This study was aimed at the investigation of the supramolecular systems based on cationic surfactants bearing cyclic head groups (imidazolium and pyrrolidinium) and polyanions (polyacrylic acid (PAA) and human serum albumin (HSA)), and factors governing their structural behavior to create functional nanosystems with controlled properties. Research hypothesis. Mixed PE-surfactant complexes based on oppositely charged species are characterized by multifactor behavior strongly affected by the nature of both components. It was expected that the transition from a single surfactant solution to an admixture with PE might provide synergetic effects on structural characteristics and functional activity. To test this assumption, the concentration thresholds of aggregation, dimensional and charge characteristics, and solubilization capacity of amphiphiles in the presence of PEs have been determined by tensiometry, fluorescence and UV-visible spectroscopy, and dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering.

RESULTS

The formation of mixed surfactant-PAA aggregates with a hydrodynamic diameter of 100-180 nm has been shown. Polyanion additives led to a decrease in the critical micelle concentration of surfactants by two orders of magnitude (from 1 mM to 0.01 mM). A gradual increase in the zeta potential of HAS-surfactant systems from negative to positive value indicates that the electrostatic mechanism contributes to the binding of components. Additionally, 3D and conventional fluorescence spectroscopy showed that imidazolium surfactant had little effect on HSA conformation, and component binding occurs due to hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals interactions through the tryptophan amino acid residue of the protein. Surfactant-polyanion nanostructures improve the solubility of lipophilic medicines such as Warfarin, Amphotericin B, and Meloxicam.

PERSPECTIVES

Surfactant-PE composition demonstrated beneficial solubilization activity and can be recommended for the construction of nanocontainers for hydrophobic drugs, with their efficacy tuned by the variation in surfactant head group and the nature of polyanions.

Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Mixtures: A Pathway to Smart Foams

This review deals with liquid foams stabilized by polyelectrolyte/surfactant (PS) complexes in aqueous solution. It briefly reviews all the important aspects of foam physics at several scales, from interfaces to macroscopic foams, needed to understand the basics of these complex systems, focusing on those particular aspects of foams stabilized by PS mixtures. The final section includes a few examples of smart foams based on PS complexes that have been reported recently in the literature. These PS complexes open an opportunity to develop new intelligent dispersed materials with potential in many fields, such as oil industry, environmental remediation, and pharmaceutical industry, among others. However, there is much work to be done to understand the mechanism involved in the stabilization of foams with PS complexes. Understanding those underlying mechanisms is vital to successfully formulate smart systems. This review is written in the hope of stimulating further work in the physics of PS foams and, particularly, in the search for responsive foams based on polymer-surfactant mixtures.

Peculiarities of the interaction of sodium dodecyl sulfate with chitosan in acidic and alkaline media

In this work, the interaction between the negatively charged surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and partially N-reacetylated chitosan (RA-CHI), which is soluble at pH range up to pH 12, is studied in a wide pH range including alkaline media by light scattering (LS) and isothermic titration calorimetry (ITC). It is shown that in the weakly alkaline medium (pH 7.4), RA-CHI/SDS interaction is exothermic and cooperative. This interaction is found to be coupled with proton transfer from the buffer substance to chitosan as it is revealed by the dependence of the measured heat release on the ionization enthalpy of the buffer. At higher pH values (pH > 8), another mechanism of interaction is observed that include SDS micellization induced by hydrophobic interactions with polymer segments, so that no phase separation occurred in these mixtures. The results obtained can contribute to expand the knowledge about application of chitosan for preparation of pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions containing anionic surfactants.

Surface science of cosmetic substrates, cleansing actives and formulations

The development of shampoo and cleansing formulations in cosmetics is at a crossroads due to consumer demands for better performing, more natural products and also the strong commitment of cosmetic companies to improve the sustainability of cosmetic products. In order to go beyond traditional formulations, it is of great importance to clearly establish the science behind cleansing technologies and appreciate the specificity of cleansing biological surfaces such as hair and skin. In this review, we present recent advances in our knowledge of the physicochemical properties of the hair surface from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. We discuss the opportunities and challenges that newer, sustainable formulations bring compared to petroleum-based ingredients. The inevitable evolution towards more bio-based, eco-friendly ingredients and sustainable formulations requires a complete rethink of many well-known physicochemical principles. The pivotal role of digital sciences and modelling in the understanding and conception of new ingredients and formulations is discussed. We describe recent numerical approaches that take into account the specificities of the hair surface in terms of structuration, different methods that study the adsorption of formulation ingredients and finally the success of new data-driven approaches. We conclude with practical examples on current formulation efforts incorporating bio-surfactants, controlling foaming and searching for new rheological properties.

Impact of the bulk aggregation on the adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces

The understanding of the deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes-surfactant mixtures onto solid surfaces presents a high interest in current days due to the recognized impact of the obtained layers on different industrial sectors and the performance of several consumer products (e.g. formulations of shampoos and hair conditioners). This results from the broad range of structures and properties that can present the mixed layers, which in most of the cases mirror the association process occurring between the polyelectrolyte chains and the oppositely charged surfactants in the bulk. Therefore, the understanding of the adsorption processes and characteristics of the adsorbed layers can be only attained from a careful examination of the self-assembly processes occurring in the solution. This review aims to contribute to the understanding of the interaction of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures with solid surfaces, which is probably one of the most underexplored aspects of these type of systems. For this purpose, a comprehensive discussion on the correlations between the aggregates formed in the solutions and the deposition of the obtained complexes upon such association onto solid surfaces will be presented. This makes it necessary to take a closer look to the most important forces driving such processes.

Ultrafast assembly of swordlike Cu3(1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)n metal-organic framework crystals with exposed active metal sites

Owing to their large surface area and high uptake capacity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention as potential materials for gas storage, energy conversion, and electrocatalysis. Various strategies have recently been proposed to manipulate the MOF surface chemistry to facilitate exposure of the embedded metal centers at the crystal surface to allow more effective binding of target molecules to these active sites. Nevertheless, such strategies remain complex, often requiring strict control over the synthesis conditions to avoid blocking pore access, reduction in crystal quality, or even collapse of the entire crystal structure. In this work, we exploit the hydrodynamics and capillary resonance associated with acoustically-driven dynamically spreading and nebulizing thin films as a new method for ultrafast synthesis of swordlike Cu₃(1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)_n (Cu-BTC) MOFs with unique monoclinic crystal structures (P2₁/n) distinct to that obtained via conventional bulk solvothermal synthesis, with 'swordlike' morphologies whose lengths far exceed their thicknesses. Through pulse modulation and taking advantage of the rapid solvent evaporation associated with the high nebulisation rates, we are also able to control the thicknesses of these large aspect ratio (width and length with respect to the thickness) crystals by arresting their vertical growth, which, in turn, allows exposure of the metal active sites at the crystal surface. An upshot of such active site exposure on the crystal surface is the concomitant enhancement in the conductivity of the MOF, evident from the improvement in its current density by two orders of magnitude.

Luengo G, Rubio AM, Rey A, Léonforte F. Self-Consistent Mean Field Calculations of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Mixtures in Solution and upon Adsorption onto Negatively Charged Surfaces

Self-Consistent Mean-Field Calculations (SCF) have provided a semi-quantitative description of the physico-chemical behavior of six different polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. The SCF calculations performed showed that both the formation of polymer-surfactant in bulk and the adsorption of the formed complexes onto negatively-charged surfaces are strongly affected by the specific nature of the considered systems, with the polymer-surfactant interactions playing a central role in the self-assembly of the complexes that, in turn, affects their adsorption onto interfaces and surfaces. This work evidences that SCF calculations are a valuable tool for deepening on the understanding of the complex physico-chemical behavior of polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures. However, it is worth noting that the framework obtained on the basis of an SCF approach considered an equilibrium situation which may, in some cases, be far from the real situation appearing in polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems.

Surfactant-Like Behavior for the Adsorption of Mixtures of a Polycation and Two Different Zwitterionic Surfactants at the Water/Vapor Interface

The bulk and interfacial properties of solutions formed by a polycation (i.e., poly(diallyl-dimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC) and two different zwitterionic surfactants (i.e., coco-betaine (CB) and cocoamidopropyl-betaine (CAPB)) have been studied. The bulk aggregation of the polyelectrolyte and the two surfactants was analyzed by turbidity and electrophoretic mobility measurements, and the adsorption of the solutions at the fluid interface was studied by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements. Evidence of polymer-surfactant complex formation in bulk was only found when the number of surfactant molecules was closer to the number of charged monomers in solutions, which suggests that the electrostatic repulsion associated with the presence of a positively charged group in the surfactant hinders the association between PDADMAC and the zwitterionic surfactant for concentrations in which there are no micelles in solution. This lack of interaction in bulk is reflected in the absence of an influence of the polyelectrolyte in the interfacial properties of the mixtures, with the behavior being controlled by the presence of surfactant. This work has evidenced the significant importance of the different interactions involved in the system for controlling the interaction and complexation mechanisms of in polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures.

Two Different Scenarios for the Equilibration of Polycation—Anionic Solutions at Water–Vapor Interfaces

The assembly in solution of the cationic polymer poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and two different anionic surfactants, sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurate (SLMT), has been studied. Additionally, the adsorption of the formed complexes at the water–vapor interface have been measured to try to shed light on the complex physico-chemical behavior of these systems under conditions close to that used in commercial products. The results show that, independently of the type of surfactant, polyelectrolyte-surfactant interactions lead to the formation of kinetically trapped aggregates in solution. Such aggregates drive the solution to phase separation, even though the complexes should remain undercharged along the whole range of explored compositions. Despite the similarities in the bulk behavior, the equilibration of the interfacial layers formed upon adsorption of kinetically trapped aggregates at the water–vapor interface follows different mechanisms. This was pointed out by surface tension and interfacial dilational rheology measurements, which showed different equilibration mechanisms of the interfacial layer depending on the nature of the surfactant: (i) formation layers with intact aggregates in the PDADMAC-SLMT system, and (ii) dissociation and spreading of kinetically trapped aggregates after their incorporation at the fluid interface for the PDADMAC-SLES one. This evidences the critical impact of the chemical nature of the surfactant in the interfacial properties of these systems. It is expected that this work may contribute to the understanding of the complex interactions involved in this type of system to exploit its behavior for technological purposes.

Effect of Dilution on the Nonequilibrium Polyelectrolyte/Surfactant Association

Polyelectrolyte (PE)/surfactant (S) mixtures play a distinguished role in the efficacy of shampoos and toiletries primarily due to the deposition of PE/S precipitates on the hair surface upon dilution of the formulations. The classical interpretation of this phenomenon is a simple composition change during which the system enters the two-phase region. Recent studies, however, indicated that the phase properties of PE/S mixtures could be strongly affected by the applied solution preparation protocols. In the present work, we aimed at studying the impact of dilution on the nonequilibrium aggregate formation in the sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) (NaPSS)/dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)/NaCl system. Mixtures prepared with hundredfold dilution of concentrated NaPSS/DTAB/NaCl solutions in water were compared with those ones made by rapid mixing of dilute NaPSS/NaCl and DTAB/NaCl solutions. The study revealed that the phase-separation concentration range as well as the composition, morphology, and visual appearance of the precipitates were remarkably different in the two cases. These observations clearly demonstrate that the dilution/deposition process is also related to the nonequilibrium phase properties of PE/S systems, which can be used to modulate the efficiency of various commercial applications.

Morphological Transition of Oppositely Charged Calix[4]arene Surfactant Mixture

When a negatively charged sulfonic or a positively charged amine group is attached to calix[4]arene surfactants, denoted as SCal7 and QACal7, respectively, each system forms monodispersed spherical micelles with a defined aggregation number. We postulated that these defined monodisperse aggregations can be adjusted in terms of the coverage, that is, how efficiently can a spherical surface (, hydrophobic domain) be covered with identical caps (hydrophilic headgroup). We carried out small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), as well as titration calorimetry and dynamic light scattering (DLS), to observe the morphologies of the mixtures of these two components. The calorimetry showed a 1:1 stoichiometric exothermic reaction with a rather large binding constant. This means that, once the twin is formed from QACal7 and SCal7, these components hardly separate. SAXS showed that the spherical micelles changed to cylindrical ones and then to vesicle shapes as the composition reached a ratio of 1:1. At some intermediate compositions, mixtures of cylinders and plates (or spheres) were observed, which were confirmed by dynamic light scattering. We assume that the twin has a larger packing parameter than the individuals because of the cancellation of the charges between the sulfonic and the amine groups, and thus, the increase of the twin composition induces the entire morphology change, as expected from the packing parameter principle. In the present case, the coverage may be a secondary factor determining the morphology.

Preparation of Gold Nanocomposites with Tunable Charge and Hydrophobicity via the Application of Polymer/Surfactant Complexation

During the synthesis of gold nanoparticle (NP) assemblies, the interfacial charge and hydrophobicity of the primary particles play a distinguished role. In the present article, we demonstrate that the association of poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI) capped gold NPs with sodium alkyl sulfates provide a powerful route for the manipulation of these interfacial properties. Dynamic light-scattering, electrophoretic mobility, UV-vis-near-infrared spectroscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and transmission electron microscopy measurements were used to characterize the PEI/surfactant/gold nanoassemblies. The results indicate the formation of gold NPs surrounded by a PEI/surfactant shell with composition-dependent charge and hydrophobicity. The mean size and the aggregation of the nanoassemblies can be fine tuned by the amount of surfactant bound to the primary gold NPs as well as by the application of controlled mixing methods. The specific features of the prepared nanocomposites may be further exploited in next-generation applications.

Electro-optic Kerr effect in the study of mixtures of oppositely charged colloids. The case of polymer-surfactant mixtures in aqueous solutions

In this review I highlight a very sensitive experimental technique for the study of polymer-surfactant complexation: The electro-optic Kerr effect. This review does not intend to be exhaustive in covering the Kerr Effect nor polymer-surfactant systems, instead it aims to call attention to an experimental technique that, even if applied in a qualitative manner, could give very rich and unique information about the structures and aggregation processes occurring in mixtures of oppositely charged colloids. The usefulness of electric birefringence experiments in the study of such systems is illustrated by selected results from literature in hope of stimulating the realization of more birefringence experiments on similar systems. This review is mainly aimed at, but not restricted to, researchers working in polyelectrolyte-surfactant mixtures in aqueous solutions, Kerr effect is a powerful experimental tool that could be used in the study of many systems in diverse areas of colloidal physics.

Triggered Release of Encapsulated Cargo from Photoresponsive Polyelectrolyte Nanocomplexes

Combining the numerous advantages of using light as a stimulus, simple free radical random copolymerization, and the easy, all-aqueous preparation of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), we prepared photolabile PEC nanoparticles and demonstrated their rapid degradation under UV light. As a proof of concept demonstration, the dye Nile Red was encapsulated in the PECs and successfully released into the surrounding solution as the polyelectrolyte nanocomplex carriers dissolved upon light irradiation.
