Mussel-Inspired Polydopamine-Functionalized Graphene as a Conductive Adhesion Promoter and Protective Layer for Silver Nanowire Transparent Electrodes

Mussel shell-derived pro-regenerative scaffold with conductive porous multi-scale-patterned microenvironment for spinal cord injury repair

It is well-established that multi-scale porous scaffolds can guide axonal growth and facilitate functional restoration after spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we developed a novel mussel shell-inspired conductive scaffold for SCI repair with ease of production, multi-scale porous structure, high flexibility, and excellent biocompatibility. By utilizing the reducing properties of polydopamine, non-conductive graphene oxide (GO) was converted into conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and crosslinkedin situwithin the mussel shells.In vitroexperiments confirmed that this multi-scale porous Shell@PDA-GO could serve as structural cues for enhancing cell adhesion, differentiation, and maturation, as well as promoting the electrophysiological development of hippocampal neurons. After transplantation at the injury sites, the Shell@PDA-GO provided a pro-regenerative microenvironment, promoting endogenous neurogenesis, triggering neovascularization, and relieving glial fibrosis formation. Interestingly, the Shell@PDA-GO could induce the release of endogenous growth factors (NGF and NT-3), resulting in the complete regeneration of nerve fibers at 12 weeks. This work provides a feasible strategy for the exploration of conductive multi-scale patterned scaffold to repair SCI.

Biomimetic synthesis of polydopamine-graphene oxide/hydroxyapatite for efficient and fast uranium(VI) capture from aqueous solution

A novel and efficient mesoporous nano-absorbent for U(VI) removal was developed through an environment-friendly route by inducing the biomimetic mineralization of hydroxyapatite (HAP) on the bioinspired surface of polydopamine-graphene oxide (PDA-GO). PDA-GO/HAP exhibited the greatly rapid and efficient U(VI) removal within 2 min, and much higher U(VI) adsorption capacity of 433.07 mg·g-1 than that of GO and PDA-GO. The enhanced adsorption capacity was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of O-H, -C=N-, and PO43- functional groups and the incorporation of uranyl ions by the formation of a new phase (chernikovite, H2(UO2)2(PO4)2·8H2O). The adsorption process of U(VI) fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, PDA-GO/HAP showed a high U(VI) adsorption capacity in a broad range of pH values and owned good thermal stability. PDA-GO/HAP with various excellent properties made it a greatly promising adsorbent for extracting uranium. Our work developed a good strategy for constructing fast and efficient uranium-adsorptive biomimetic materials.

Room temperature processed protective layer for printed silver electrodes

Low-temperature processed printed silver electrodes pave the way for electrical connections in flexible substrates with reduced energy consumption. Despite their excellent performance and simple process, printed silver electrodes' poor stability limits their applications. This study demonstrates a transparent protective layer without thermal annealing for printed silver electrodes, which maintains its electrical properties for a long period of time. A fluoropolymer, specifically a cyclic transparent optical polymer (CYTOP), was used as a protective layer for silver. The CYTOP is room temperature processable and chemically stable against carboxyl acid. The introduction of the CYTOP film on the printed silver electrodes mitigates the chemical reaction between silver and carboxyl acid, thereby elongating its lifetime. Under heated acetic acid, the printed silver electrodes with a CYTOP protective layer maintained their initial resistance for up to 300 hours, while the electrodes without a protective layer were damaged within a few hours. A microscopic image shows that the protective layer enables printed electrodes to maintain their shape without damage. Hence, the protective layer guarantees the accurate and reliable performance of electronic devices with printed electrodes under actual operating conditions. This research will contribute to designing chemically reliable flexible devices in the near future.

Thermal Reactivity of High-Density Hybrid Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine Crystals Prepared by a Microfluidic Crystallization Method

In this paper, the two-dimensional (2D) high nitrogen triaminoguanidine-glyoxal polymer (TAGP) has been used to dope hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) crystals using a microfluidic crystallization method. A series of constraint TAGP-doped RDX crystals using a microfluidic mixer (so-called controlled qy-RDX) with higher bulk density and better thermal stability have been obtained as a result of the granulometric gradation. The crystal structure and thermal reactivity properties of qy-RDX are largely affected by the mixing speed of the solvent and antisolvent. In particular, the bulk density of qy-RDX could be slightly changed in the range from 1.78 to 1.85 g cm^-3 as a result of varied mixing states. The obtained qy-RDX crystals have better thermal stability than pristine RDX, showing a higher exothermic peak temperature and an endothermic peak temperature with a higher heat release. E_a for thermal decomposition of controlled qy-RDX is 105.3 kJ mol^-1, which is 20 kJ mol^-1 lower than that of pure RDX. The controlled qy-RDX samples with lower E_a followed the random 2D nucleation and nucleus growth (A2) model, whereas controlled qy-RDX with higher E_a (122.8 and 122.7 kJ mol^-1) following some complex model between A2 and the random chain scission (L2) model.

Multifunctional Integrated Transparent Film for Efficient Electromagnetic Protection

Silver nanowire (Ag NW) has been considered as the promising building block for the fabrication of transparent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding films. However, the practical application of Ag NW-based EMI shielding films has been restricted due to the unsatisfactory stability of Ag NW. Herein, we proposed a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated Ag NW film, which realizes a seamless integration of optical transparency, highly efficient EMI shielding, reliable durability and stability. The Ag NW constructs a highly transparent and conductive network, and the rGO provides additional conductive path, showing a superior EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 33.62 dB at transmittance of 81.9%. In addition, the top rGO layer enables the hybrid film with reliable durability and chemical stability, which can maintain 96% and 90% EMI SE after 1000 times bending cycles at radius of 2 mm and exposure in air for 80 days. Furthermore, the rGO/Ag NW films also possess fast thermal response and heating stability, making them highly applicable in wearable devices. The synergy of Ag NW and rGO grants the hybrid EMI shielding film multiple desired functions and meanwhile overcomes the shortcomings of Ag NW. This work provides a reference for preparing multifunctional integrated transparent EMI shielding film.

Smart Textile Based on 3D Stretchable Silver Nanowires/MXene Conductive Networks for Personal Healthcare and Thermal Management

Wearable electronics have enriched daily lives by providing smart functions as well as monitoring body health conditions. However, the realization of wearable electronics with personal healthcare and thermal comfort management of the human body is still a great challenge. Furthermore, manufacturing such on-skin wearable electronics on traditional thin-film substrates results in limited gas permeability and inflammation. Herein, we proposed a personal healthcare and thermal management smart textile with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive network, formed by silver nanowires (AgNWs) bridging lamellar structured transition-metal carbide/carbonitride (MXene) nanosheets deposited on nonwoven fabrics. Benefiting from the interconnected conductive network synergistic effect of one-dimensional (1D) AgNWs bridging two-dimensional (2D) MXene, the strain sensor exhibits excellent durability (>1500 stretching cycles) and high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 1085) with a wide strain range limit (∼100%), and the details of human body activities can be accurately recognized and monitored. Moreover, thanks to the excellent Joule heating and photothermal effect endowed by AgNWs and MXene, the multifunctional smart textile with direct temperature visualization and solar-powered temperature regulation functions was successfully developed, after further combination of thermochromic and phase-change functional layers, respectively. The smart textiles with a stretchable AgNW-MXene 3D conductive network hold great promise for next-generation personal healthcare and thermal management wearable systems.

Electrical stimulation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes using conductive polydopamine-reduced graphene oxide-hybrid hydrogels for constructing cardiac microtissues

The development of diversified biomaterials in tissue engineering has been promoted by growing research into carbon-based nanomaterials. Usually, ideal scaffold materials should possess properties similar to the extracellular matrix of natural myocardial tissue. In this study, dopamine-reduced graphene oxide (GO), was prepared and doped into gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogels, resulting in novel conductive and mechanical properties for controlling cell growth. Cardiomyocytes (CMs) cultured on PDA-rGO-incorporated hydrogels (GelMA-PDA-rGO) had greater cytocompatibility than those cultured on GelMA hydrogels, as evidenced by higher cell survival rates and up-regulation of cardiac-relevant proteins. Finally, electrical stimulation was applied to facilitate the maturation of CMs which was seeded on different hydrogels. The findings revealed that electrical stimulation of conductive hybrid hydrogel scaffolds improved the orientational order parameter of sarcomeres (OOP). In addition, propagation of intercellular pacing signals, which improves the expression of gap junction proteins was noticed, likewise calcium handling capacity was present in conductive hybrid hydrogels compared to those in pure GelMA group. This study has shown that the combination of GelMA-PDA-rGO based conductive hydrogels and electrical stimulation possessed synergistic effects for engineering a more functional and mature myocardium layer as well as further application in drug screening and disease modeling in vitro.

Highly Stretchable, Adhesive, Biocompatible, and Antibacterial Hydrogel Dressings for Wound Healing

Treatment of wounds in special areas is challenging due to inevitable movements and difficult fixation. Common cotton gauze suffers from incomplete joint surface coverage, confinement of joint movement, lack of antibacterial function, and frequent replacements. Hydrogels have been considered as good candidates for wound dressing because of their good flexibility and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the adhesive, mechanical, and antibacterial properties of conventional hydrogels are not satisfactory. Herein, cationic polyelectrolyte brushes grafted from bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers are introduced into polydopamine/polyacrylamide hydrogels. The 1D polymer brushes have rigid BC backbones to enhance mechanical property of hydrogels, realizing high tensile strength (21-51 kPa), large tensile strain (899-1047%), and ideal compressive property. Positively charged quaternary ammonium groups of tethered polymer brushes provide long-lasting antibacterial property to hydrogels and promote crawling and proliferation of negatively charged epidermis cells. Moreover, the hydrogels are rich in catechol groups and capable of adhering to various surfaces, meeting adhesive demand of large movement for special areas. With the above merits, the hydrogels demonstrate less inflammatory response and faster healing speed for in vivo wound healing on rats. Therefore, the multifunctional hydrogels show stable covering, little displacement, long-lasting antibacteria, and fast wound healing, demonstrating promise in wound dressing.

Bio-inspired deposition of electrochemically exfoliated graphene layers for electrical resistance heating applications

Electrochemically exfoliated graphene (eeG) layers possess a variety of potential applications, e.g. as susceptor material for contactless induction heating in dynamic electro-magnetic fields, and as flexible and transparent electrode or resistivity heating elements. Spray coating of eeG dispersions was investigated in detail as a simple and fast method to deposit both, thin conducting layers and ring structures on polycarbonate substrates. The spray coating process was examined by systematic variation of dispersion concentration and volume applied to heated substrates. Properties of the obtained layers were characterized by UV-VIS spectroscopy, SEM and Confocal Scanning Microscopy. Electrical conductivity of eeG ring structures was measured using micro-four-point measurements. Modification of eeG with poly(dopamine) and post-thermal treatment yields in the reduction of the oxidized graphene proportion, an increase in electrical conductivity, and mechanical stabilization of the deposited thin layers. The chemical composition of modified eeG layer was analyzed via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy pointing to the reductive behavior of poly(dopamine). Application oriented experiments demonstrate the direct electric current heating (Joule-Heating) effect of spray-coated eeG layers.

Highly Conductive and Flexible Dopamine-Graphene Hybrid Electronic Textile Yarn for Sensitive and Selective NO2 Detection

Graphene-based electronic textile (e-textile) gas sensors have been developed for detecting hazardous NO₂ gas. For the e-textile gas sensor, electrical conductivity is a critical factor because it directly affects its sensitivity. To obtain a highly conductive e-textile, biomolecules have been used for gluing the graphene to the textile surface, though there remain areas to improve, such as poor conductivity and flexibility. Herein, we have developed a dopamine-graphene hybrid electronic textile yarn (DGY) where the dopamine is used as a bio-inspired adhesive to attach graphene to the surface of yarns. The DGY shows improved electrical conductivity (∼40 times) compared to conventional graphene-based e-textile yarns with no glue. Moreover, it exhibited improved sensing performance in terms of short response time (∼2 min), high sensitivity (0.02 μA/ppm), and selectivity toward NO₂. The mechanical flexibility and durability of the DGY were examined through a 1000-cycle bending test. For a practical application, the DGY was attempted to detect the NO_x emitted from vehicles, including gasoline, diesel, and fuel cell electric vehicles. Our results demonstrated that the DGYs-as a graphene-based e-textile gas sensor for detecting NO₂-are simple to fabricate, cheap, disposable, and mechanically stable.

Mussel-inspired immobilization of Au on bare and graphene-wrapped Ni nanoparticles toward highly efficient and easily recyclable catalysts

Bimetallic nanocatalysts have been gaining huge research attention in the heterogeneous catalysis community recently owing to their tunable properties and multifunctional characteristics. In this work, we fabricated a bimetallic core-shell nanocomposite catalyst by employing a mussel-inspired strategy for immobilizing gold nanoparticles (AuNP) on the surface of nickel nanoparticles (NiNP). NiNPs obtained from the reduction of Ni(ii) were first coated with polydopamine to provide the anchoring sites towards the robust immobilization of AuNPs. The as-synthesized nanocomposite (Ni-PD-Au) exhibited outstanding catalytic activity while reducing methylene blue (MB) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) yielding rate constants 13.11 min-1 and 4.21 min-1, respectively, outperforming the catalytic efficiency of its monometallic counterparts and other similar reported catalysts by large margins. The superior catalytic efficiency of the Ni-PD-Au was attributed to the well-known synergistic effect, which was experimentally investigated and compared with prior reports. Similar bio-inspired immobilization of AuNPs was also applied on graphene-wrapped NiNPs (Ni-G) instead of bare NiNPs to synthesize another composite catalyst (Ni-G-PD-Au), which yet again exhibited synergistic catalytic activity. A comparative study between the two nanocomposites suggested that Ni-PD-Au excelled in catalytic activity but Ni-G-PD-Au provided noteworthy stability showing ∼100% efficiency over 17 repeated cycles. However, along with excellent synergistic performance, both nanocomposites demonstrated high magnetization and thermal stability up to 350 °C ascertaining their easy separation and sustainability for high-temperature applications, respectively.

Fabrication and Characterization of Novel Shape-Stabilized Phase Change Materials Based on P(TDA-co-HDA)/GO Composites

Shape-stabilized phase change materials (SPCMs) are green, reusable energy storage materials. Because the melting temperature of n-alkyl acrylate copolymer is adjustable by controlling the side-chain length, the appropriate melting temperature can be achieved. Poly(tetradecyl acrylate-co-hexadecyl acrylate) (P(TDA-co-HDA)) with a molar ratio of 1:1 and SPCMs were fabricated via an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method and a solution blending method with P(TDA-co-HDA) as a thermal storage material and graphene oxide (GO) as a supporting substance. In this composite, an SPCM was achieved, which absorbed heat at 29.9 °C and released it at 12.1 °C with a heat storage capacity of 70 J/g at a mass ratio of GO of 10%. The material retained its shape without any leakage at 60 °C, which was much higher than that of the melting temperature of P(TDA-co-HDA). The SPCMs exhibited good crystallization behaviors and excellent thermal reliabilities after 100 thermal cycles. The thermal properties of the P(TDA-co-HDA)/GO composite PCMs with various GO loadings were also investigated. The novel shape-stabilized PCMs fabricated in this study have potential uses in thermal energy storage applications.

New Insights into Flexible Transparent Conductive Silver Nanowires Films

Flexible transparent conductive films (FTCFs) composed of silver nanowires (AgNWs) have become an important research direction because of their potential in flexible electronic devices. The optoelectronic properties of FTCFs composed of AgNWs of different lengths were evaluated in this study. AgNWs, with an average diameter of about 25 nm and length of 15.49-3.92 μm were obtained by a sonication-induced scission process. AgNW-FTCFs were prepared on polyethylene terephthalate substrates using a Meyer bar and then dried in the ambient environment. The sheet resistance, non-uniformity factor of the sheet resistance, the root mean square roughness, and haze of the FTCFs increased as the length of AgNWs decreased. The transmittance of the films increased slightly as the length of AgNWs increased. AgNWs with a length of 15.49 μm provided an AgNW-FTCF with excellent properties including haze of 0.95%, transmittance of 93.42%, and sheet resistance of 80.15 Ω∙sq-1, without any additional post-treatment of the film. This work investigating the dependence of the optoelectronic properties of AgNW-FTCFs on AgNW length provides design guidelines for development of AgNW-FTCFs.

Controllable assembly of a hierarchical multiscale architecture based on silver nanoparticle grids/nanowires for flexible organic solar cells

In this work, an effective and facile strategy was developed to assemble a flexible hierarchical multiscale architecture by incorporating microscale silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grids into random silver nanowires (AgNWs) networks combined with a room-temperature chemical sintering mechanism. The microscale AgNPs grids was fabricated by assemble AgNPs into a series of twin lines directly on a hydrophilic PET substrate based on coffee-ring effect with ink-jet printing technique. By regulating the assembly architecture, a flexible hierarchical multiscale conductor based on AgNPs grids/AgNWs was successfully fabricated and demonstrated a high transmittance of 87.5%, low sheet resistance of 16.5 Ω/sq and excellent mechanical flexibility. The hierarchical multiscale architecture was fairly favorable to efficiently collect free charges among the gaps in the AgNWs network, as well as to enhance the stability of conductivity by creating continuous conduction pathways. As an anode electrode in a flexible organic solar cell, the hierarchical multiscale AgNPs grids/AgNWs conductor demonstrated a more power photoelectric conversion efficiency, which was even superior to the corresponding properties of the ITO network at a similar transmittance. This simple, low-cost and nonlithographic solution-based approach would further enhance current fabrication approaches to create patterned microstructures, and have great potential to fabricate multifarious functional patterns in flexible electronic devices.

Mussel-Inspired Defect Engineering of Graphene Liquid Crystalline Fibers for Synergistic Enhancement of Mechanical Strength and Electrical Conductivity

Inspired by mussel adhesive polydopamine (PDA), effective reinforcement of graphene-based liquid crystalline fibers to attain high mechanical and electrical properties simultaneously is presented. The two-step defect engineering, relying on bioinspired surface polymerization and subsequent solution infiltration of PDA, addresses the intrinsic limitation of graphene fibers arising from the folding and wrinkling of graphene layers during the fiber-spinning process. For a clear understanding of the mechanism of PDA-induced defect engineering, interfacial adhesion between graphene oxide sheets is straightforwardly analyzed by the atomic force microscopy pull-off test. Subsequently, PDA could be converted into an N-doped graphitic layer within the fiber structure by a mild thermal treatment such that mechanically strong fibers could be obtained without sacrificing electrical conductivity. Bioinspired graphene-based fiber holds great promise for a wide range of applications, including flexible electronics, multifunctional textiles, and wearable sensors.

In Situ Polymerization of Dopamine on Graphene Framework for Charge Storage Applications

Polydopamine, a functional coating material, is redox active as cathode materials for both Li- and Na-ion batteries or hybrid capacitors. Here, a polydopamine coating onto 3D graphene framework is introduced through a simple hydrothermal process, during which graphene oxide serves not only as an oxidant for assisting the polymerization of dopamine, but also as a template for the conformal growth of polydopamine. High-density films are fabricated by compressing the polydopamine-coated graphene aerogels, which can be directly used as free-standing and flexible cathodes in both Li- and Na-cells. The compact electrodes deliver high capacities of ≈230 mAh g^-1 in Li-cells and ≈211 mAh g^-1 in Na-cells based on the total mass of electrodes. These compact electrodes also exhibit exceptional cycling stability and high rate performance due to the unique structure in which polydopamine is uniformly coated on the 3D structured graphene.

Biodegradable Transparent Substrate Based on Edible Starch-Chitosan Embedded with Nature-Inspired Three-Dimensionally Interconnected Conductive Nanocomposites for Wearable Green Electronics

Electronic waste (E-waste) contain large environmental contaminants such as toxic heavy metals and hazardous chemicals. These contaminants would migrate into drinking water or food chains and pose a serious threat to environment and human health. Biodegradable green electronics has great potential to address the issue of E-waste. Here, we report on a novel biodegradable and flexible transparent electrode, integrating three-dimensionally (3D) interconnected conductive nanocomposites into edible starch-chitosan-based substrates. Starch and chitosan are extracted from abundant and inexpensive potato and crab shells, respectively. Nacre-inspired interface designs are introduced to construct a 3D interconnected single wall carbon nanotube (SCNT)-pristine graphene (PG)-conductive polymer network architecture. The inorganic one-dimensional SCNT and two-dimensional PG sheets are tightly cross-linked together at the junction interface by long organic conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) chains. The formation of a 3D continuous SCNT-PG-PEDOT conductive network leads to not only a low sheet resistance but also a superior flexibility. The flexible transparent electrode possesses an excellent optoelectronic performance: typically, a sheet resistance of 46 Ω/sq with a transmittance of 83.5% at a typical wavelength of 550 nm. The sheet resistance of the electrode slightly increased less than 3% even after hundreds of bending cycles. The lightweight flexible and biocompatible transparent electrode could conform to skin topography or any other arbitrary surface naturally. The edible starch-chitosan substrate-based transparent electrodes could be biodegraded in lysozyme solution rapidly at room temperature without producing any toxic residues. SCNT-PG-PEDOT can be recycled via a membrane process for further fabrication of conductive and reinforcement composites. This high-performance biodegradable transparent electrode is a promising material for next-generation wearable green optoelectronics, transient electronics, and edible electronics.

Recent Trends in Mussel-Inspired Catechol-Containing Polymers (A Review)

Syntheses and applications of mussel-inspired polymeric materials have gained a foothold in research in recent years. Mussel-inspired chemistry coupled to Michael addition and Schiff’s base reactions was the key success for this intensive research. Unequivocally, The basic building brick of these materials is catechol-containing moiety, namely, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (L-DOPA or DOPA) and dopamine (DA). These catechol-based units within the chemical structure of the material ensure chiefly its adhesive characteristic to adherends of different natures. The newly-made catechol-bearing polymeric materials exhibit unique features, implying their importance in several uses and applications. Technology advent is being advantaged with these holdfast mussel protein-like materials. This review sheds light into the recent advances of such mussel-inspired materials for their adhesion capacity to several substrata of different natures, and for their applications mainly in antifouling coatings and nanoparticles technology.

Reduced Graphene Oxide-Hybridized Polymeric High-Internal Phase Emulsions for Highly Efficient Removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Water Matrix

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-hybridized polymeric high-internal phase emulsions (RGO/polyHIPEs) with an open-cell structure and hydrophobicity have been successfully prepared using 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the monomer and the cross-linker, respectively. The adsorption mechanism and performance of this RGO/polyHIPEs to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated. Adsorption isotherms of PAHs on RGO/polyHIPEs show that the saturated adsorption capacity is 47.5 mg/g and the equilibrium time is 8 h. Cycling tests show that the adsorption capacity of RGO/polyHIPEs remains stable in 10 adsorption-desorption cycles without observable structure change in RGO/polyHIPEs. Moreover, the PAH residues in water samples after being purified by RGO/polyHIPEs are lower than the limit values in drinking water set by the European Food Safety Authority. These results demonstrate that the RGO/polyHIPEs have great potentiality in PAH removal and water purification.
