Domed Silica Microcylinders Coated with Oleophilic Polypeptides and Their Behavior in Lyotropic Cholesteric Liquid Crystals of the Same Polypeptide

Nature-Inspired and "Water-Skating" Paper and Polyester Substrates Enabled by the Molecular Structure of Poly(γ-stearyl-α,l-glutamate) Homopolypeptide

We demonstrate that the molecular structure of a synthetic homopolypeptide that resembles the leg architecture of water strider insects is effective to impart flexible polymeric surfaces with superhydrophobic behavior. Filter paper (FP) and polyester (PET) were modified with a coating consisting of low-molecular weight α-helical poly(γ-stearyl-α,l-glutamate) (PSLG, M_w = 4500 Da) homopolypeptide. PSLG-coated substrates displayed near to and superhydrophobic behavior (≥150°) as reflected by the contact angle values. Despite being physically adsorbed, the PSLG coating uniformly covered and was strongly adhered to the substrate surfaces. The thin coating layer displayed remarkable mechanical abrasion resistance and was insensitive to long-time exposure to ambient conditions. PLSG-coated textile fibers exhibited useful and interesting properties. Under an iron-containing load, PSLG-coated PET was able to float and "walk" on water when exposed to a magnet. The PSLG coating was able to reduce the adhesion of Escherichia coli, model Gram-negative bacteria. The results indicated that the molecular geometry of PSLG homopolypeptide, which possesses a α-helical backbone sprouting out of highly hydrophobic stearyl side chains, was the key feature responsible for the observed behaviors. This study is relevant for a broad range of potential applications: from crop and drinking water management in arid geographic areas to biomedical devices and implants.

Colloidal transport within nematic liquid crystals with arrays of obstacles

We have investigated the gravity-driven transport of spherical colloids suspended in the nematic liquid crystal 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) within microfluidic arrays of cylindrical obstacles arranged in a square lattice. Homeotropic anchoring at the surfaces of the obstacles created periodic director-field patterns that strongly influenced the motion of the colloids, whose surfaces had planar anchoring. When the gravitational force was oriented parallel to a principal axis of the lattice, the particles moved along channels between columns of obstacles and displayed pronounced modulations in their velocity. Quantitative analysis indicates that this modulation resulted from a combination of a spatially varying effective drag viscosity and elastic interactions engendered by the periodic director field. The interactions differed qualitatively from a sum of pair-wise interactions between the colloids and isolated obstacles, reflecting the distinct nematic environment created by confinement within the array. As the angle α between the gravitational force and principal axis of the lattice was varied, the velocity did not follow the force but instead locked into a discrete set of directions commensurate with the lattice. The transitions between these directions occurred at values of α that were different from those observed when the spheres were in an isotropic liquid, indicating the ability of the liquid crystal forces to tune the lateral displacement behavior in such devices.

Polypeptide Composite Particle-Assisted Organization of π-Conjugated Polymers into Highly Crystalline "Coffee Stains"

We demonstrate that homopolypeptides covalently tethered to anisotropically shaped silica particles induce crystalline ordering of representative semiconducting polymers. Films drop-cast from chloroform dispersions of poly(γ-stearyl-l-glutamate) (PSLG) composite particles and poly(3-hexythiophene) (P3HT) led to highly ordered crystalline structures of P3HT. Hydrophobic-hydrophobic interactions between the alkyl side chains of P3HT and PSLG were the main driving force for P3HT chain ordering into the crystalline assemblies. It was found that the orientation of rigid P3HT fibrils on the substrate adopted the directionality of the evaporating front. Regardless of the PSLG-coated particle dimensions used, the drop-cast films displayed patterns that were shaped by the coffee ring and Marangoni effects. PSLG-coated particles of high axial ratio (4.2) were more efficient in enhancing the electronic performance of P3HT than low axial ratio (2.6) homologues. Devices fabricated from the ordered assemblies displayed improved charge-carrier transport performance when compared to devices fabricated from P3HT alone. These results suggest that PSLG can favorably mediate the organization of semiconducting polymers.
