Thermoresponsive Polyoxometalate/Ionic Liquid Supramolecular Gel Electrolytes for Supercapacitors: Fabrication, Structure, and Heteropolyanion Structure Effect

Polyoxometalates as chemically and structurally versatile components in self-assembled materials

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are anionic molecular metal oxides with expansive diversity in terms of their composition, structure, nuclearity and charge. Within this vast collection of compounds are dominant structural motifs (POM platforms), that are amenable to significant chemical tuning with minimal perturbation of the inorganic oxide molecular structure. Consequently, this enables the systematic investigation of these compounds as inorganic additives within materials whereby structure and charge can be tuned independently i.e. [PW12O40]3- vs. [SiW12O40]4- while also investigating the impact of varying the charge balancing cations on self-assembly. The rich surface chemistry of POMs also supports their functionalisation by organic components to yield so-called inorganic-organic hybrids which will be the key focus of this perspective. We will introduce the modifications possible for each POM platform, as well as discussing the range of nanoparticles, microparticles and surfaces that have been developed using both surfactant and polymer building blocks. We will also illustrate important examples of POM-hybrids alongside their potential utility in applications such as imaging, therapeutic delivery and energy storage.

Polyoxometalate-Containing Supramolecular Gels

Supramolecular gels are important soft materials with various applications, which are fabricated through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic or host-guest interactions. Introducing functional groups, especially inorganic components, is an efficient strategy to obtain gels with robust architecture and high performance. Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a class of negatively-charged clusters, have defined structures and multiple interaction sites, resulting in their potential as building blocks for constructing POM-containing supramolecular gels. The introduction of POMs into gels not only provides strong driving forces for the formation of gels due to the characteristics of charged cluster and oxygen-rich surface, but also brings new properties sourcing from unique electronic structures of POMs. Though many POM-containing gels have been reported, a comprehensive review is still absent. Herein, the concept of POM-containing gels is discussed, following with the design strategies and driving forces. To better understand the results in the literature, detailed examples, which are classified into several categories based on the types of organic components, are presented to illustrate the gelation process and gel structures. Moreover, applications of POM-containing gels in energy chemistry, sustainable chemistry and other aspects are also reviewed, as well as the future developments of this field. Emerging iongel materials towards applications in energy and bioelectronics

In the past two decades, ionic liquids (ILs) have blossomed as versatile task-specific materials with a unique combination of properties, which can be beneficial for a plethora of different applications. The additional need of incorporating ILs into solid devices led to the development of a new class of ionic soft-solid materials, named here iongels. Nowadays, iongels cover a wide range of materials mostly composed of an IL component immobilized within different matrices such as polymers, inorganic networks, biopolymers or inorganic nanoparticles. This review aims at presenting an integrated perspective on the recent progress and advances in this emerging type of material. We provide an analysis of the main families of iongels and highlight the emerging types of these ionic soft materials offering additional properties, such as thermoresponsiveness, self-healing, mixed ionic/electronic properties, and (photo)luminescence, among others. Next, recent trends in additive manufacturing (3D printing) of iongels are presented. Finally, their new applications in the areas of energy, gas separation and (bio)electronics are detailed and discussed in terms of performance, underpinning it to the structural features and processing of iongel materials.

Geometric Frustration and Long-Range Ordering Induced by Surface Pressure Oscillation in a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Magnetic Soft Spheres

As a step toward the bottom-up construction of magnonic systems, this paper demonstrates the use of a large-amplitude surface-pressure annealing technique to generate 2-D order in a Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer of magnetic soft spheres comprising a surfactant-encapsulated polyoxometalate. The films show a distorted square lattice interpreted as due to geometric frustration caused by 2-D confinement between soft walls, one being the air interface and the other the aqueous subphase. Hysteresis and relaxation phenomena in the 2-D layers are suggested to be due to folding and time-dependent interpenetration of surfactant chains.

Synthesis, Physical Properties and Application of a Series of New Polyoxometalate-Based Ionic Liquids

This paper deals with the preparation and the characterization of four new ionic liquids resulting from the pairing of various polyoxotungstates or polyoxomolybdates with the cation trihexyltetradecylphosphonium. The physical properties measured by different techniques evidence that the viscosity and the rheological behaviors of such POM-based ionic liquids, POM-ILs, strongly depend on the nature of the POM, especially its charge. Playing on the nature of the POM, we can indeed obtain Newtonian liquids or some much more viscous materials exhibiting characteristics of resins or pseudo-plastics. In a second part of this study, the potentialities of using such materials both as solvent and catalyst for the oxidation of a series of alcohols are presented as proof of concept. This part highlights great differences in strength and selectivity as a function of the POM-IL used. Furthermore, a very simple way to recycle the catalyst is also presented.

Electrochemical investigation and amperometry determination iodate based on ionic liquid/polyoxotungstate/P-doped electrochemically reduced graphene oxide multi-component nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode

A novel modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was successfully fabricated with a tetra-component nanocomposite consisting of (1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)dipyridinium) ionic liquid (bdpy), SiW₁₁O₃₉Ni(H₂O) (SiW₁₁Ni) Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM), and phosphorus-doped electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (P-ERGO) by electrodeposition technique. The (bdpy)SiW₁₁Ni/GO hybrid nanocomposite was synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized by UV-vis absorption, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology, electrochemical performance, and electrocatalysis activity of the nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode ((bdpy)SiW₁₁Ni/P-ERGO/GCE) were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), and amperometry, respectively. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the as-prepared sensor showed high sensitivity of 28.1 μA mM⁻¹ and good selectivity for iodate (IO₃⁻) reduction, enabling the detection of IO₃⁻ within a linear range of 10–1600 μmol L⁻¹ (R² = 0.9999) with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.47 nmol L⁻¹ (S/N = 3). The proposed electrochemical sensor exhibited good reproducibility, and repeatability, high stability, and excellent anti-interference ability, as well as analytical performance in mineral water, tap water, and commercial edible iodized salt which might provide a capable platform for the determination of IO₃⁻.

Cubic Liquid Crystals of Polyoxometalate-Based Ionic Liquids

Thermotropic ionic liquid crystals of polyoxometalate (POM)-based ionic liquids (POM-based ILs), which are formed by a POM, K₇PW₁₁O₃₉, and cationic surfactants, tetra-n-alkylammonium bromide ((C_nH_2n+1)₄N⁺Br^-, n = 6 and 7), are first proposed. As a model system, the cubic phase structure of a POM-based IL, {(C₇H₁₅)₄N⁺}₇PW₁₁O₃₉, was determined to form in a wide range of temperatures, exhibiting good thermostability, excellent mechanical strength, and high viscosity. Furthermore, the lyotropic ionic liquid crystals formed by {(C₇H₁₅)₄N⁺}₇PW₁₁O₃₉ in solvents such as chloroform or toluene still maintained a cubic structure. These cubic ionic liquid crystals (CILCs) were used as anticorrosion coatings both in acidic and neutral environments. The electrochemical measurements of Cu and Fe surfaces coated by CILCs showed an excellent ability of anticorrosion, indicating that the metals can be perfectly protected by the CILC coatings with high resistance and low capacitance. We assume that the CILCs may serve as barriers to stop oxygen diffusing to metals and interrupt the electron tunnels between the metal surfaces and the electrolyte solutions. Such environmentally friendly CILCs of POMs-based ILs are convenient for coating and removal, being vital to versatile industrial and academic applications.

All-Transparent Stretchable Electrochromic Supercapacitor Wearable Patch Device

Flexible and stretchable electrochromic supercapacitor systems are widely considered as promising multifunctional energy storage devices that eliminate the need for an external power source. Nevertheless, the performance of conventional designs deteriorates significantly as a result of electrode/electrolyte exposure to atmosphere as well as mechanical deformations for the case of flexible systems. In this study, we suggest an all-transparent stretchable electrochromic supercapacitor device with ultrastable performance, which consists of Au/Ag core-shell nanowire-embedded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), bistacked WO₃ nanotube/PEDOT:PSS, and polyacrylamide (PAAm)-based hydrogel electrolyte. Au/Ag core-shell nanowire-embedded PDMS integrated with PAAm-based hydrogel electrolyte prevents Ag oxidation and dehydration while maintaining ionic and electrical conductivity at high voltage even after 16 days of exposure to ambient conditions and under application of mechanical strains in both tensile and bending conditions. WO₃ nanotube/PEDOT:PSS bistacked active materials maintain high electrochemical-electrochromic performance even under mechanical deformations. Maximum specific capacitance of 471.0 F g^-1 was obtained with a 92.9% capacity retention even after 50 000 charge-discharge cycles. In addition, high coloration efficiency of 83.9 cm² C^-1 was shown to be due to the dual coloration and pseudocapacitor characteristics of the WO₃ nanotube and PEDOT:PSS thin layer.

Catalytic synthesis of chloroacetates with thermoregulated ionic liquids based on vanadium-substituted polyoxometalate

A series of polyoxometalate-based ionic liquid (POM-IL) catalysts with functional sulfonic acid groups, [TEAPS]_3+nPW_12−nV_nO₄₀ (n = 1, 2, 3) were synthesized and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FT-IR), UV-Vis spectrophotometry (UV), potentiometric titration and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The catalytic ability and reusability of the POM-IL catalysts were evaluated on esterification of chloroacetic acid and n-amyl alcohol. The optimum reaction conditions, 0.2 g of the catalyst amount, 10 mL of water carrier, 140 °C of reaction temperature, and 1.2/1 of the molar ratio of alcohol/acid, were obtained by an orthogonal test. [TEAPS]₅PW₁₀V₂O₄₀ was found to be the best active catalyst with an esterification rate of 98.75% and could be reused five times without significant decrease in activity. The ionic liquid acted as a temperature-responsive catalyst, forming a homogeneous mixture with the reactants at reaction temperature, and could be precipitated and separated from products when the reaction ends at ambient temperature. Therefore, an environmentally friendly and highly efficient approach for the synthesis of chloroacetates is provided.

The ionic liquid catalyst [TEAPS]₅PW₁₀V₂O₄₀ exhibited good activity and reusability in the esterification process owing to its acidity and thermoregulated properties.

Synthesis and conductive performance of polyoxometalate acid salt gel electrolytes

Two vanadium-substituted polyoxometalate acid salt gel electrolytes, [PyPS]3H4SiW9V3O40 and [PyPS]5H2SiW9V3O40, have been synthesized using a 1-(3-sulfonic group) propylpyridine (PyPS) and a Keggin vanadium-substituted heteropoly acid H7SiW9V3O40 through an ionic self-assembly method, and adjusting the ratio of cation and anion. A substitution effect of the acid salt gel electrolytes has been investigated. Interestingly, when protons of the polyoxometalate acid salt gel electrolytes are substituted, both the conductivity and the phase transformation temperature increase. The fastest conductivity of these gel electrolytes was as high as 2.57 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 110 °C.

Synthesis and performance of solid proton conductor molybdovanadosilicic acid

A molybdovanadosilicic acid H5SiMo11VO40·8H2O was synthesized and investigated in this work. The structure features and hydration degree of this acid were characterized by IR, UV, XRD and TG-DTA. Its proton conductivity was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS measurements demonstrated that H5SiMo11VO40·8H2O showed excellent proton conduction performance with proton conductivity reaching 5.70 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 26 °C and 70% relative humidity. So, it is a new solid high proton conductor. The conductivity enhances with the increase of temperature, and it exhibits Arrhenius behavior. The activation energy value for proton conduction is 21.4 kJ mol-1, suggesting that the proton transfer in this solid acid is dominated by Vehicle mechanism.

Solvent Dielectricity-Modulated Helical Assembly and Morphologic Transformation of Achiral Surfactant-Inorganic Cluster Ionic Complexes

Ionic complexes comprising single/double chain cationic surfactant and Lindqvist-type polyoxomolybdate anionic cluster were used for controlled self-assembly in organic solutions. In the solvent with low dielectric constant the complexes self-assembled into flat ribbon like lamellar aggregations with an inverse bilayer substructure where the cluster located at the middle. Under the condition of increased dielectric constant, the solvent triggered the formation of helical self-assemblies, which finally transformed from helical ribbons to the flower-like assemblies due to the bilayer becoming excessively twisted. The self-assembled morphology and the substructure were characterized by SEM, TEM, and XRD. The solvent dielectricity-controlled morphologic transformations modulated by the variation of electrostatic interactions between organic cations and inorganic polyanions were demonstrated by ¹H NMR and IR spectra. The strategy in this work represents an effective route in targeting the chirality-directed functionalization of inorganic clusters by combining controllable and helical assemblies of achiral polyoxometalate complexes in one system.
