Further Improvement Based on Traditional Nanocapsule Preparation Methods: A Review

Nanocapsule preparation technology, as an emerging technology with great development prospects, has uniqueness and superiority in various industries. In this paper, the preparation technology of nanocapsules was systematically divided into three categories: physical methods, chemical methods, and physicochemical methods. The technological innovation of different methods in recent years was reviewed, and the mechanisms of nanocapsules prepared via emulsion polymerization, interface polymerization, layer-by-layer self-assembly technology, nanoprecipitation, supercritical fluid, and nano spray drying was summarized in detail. Different from previous reviews, the renewal iteration of core-shell structural materials was highlighted, and relevant illustrations of their representative and latest research results were reviewed. With the continuous progress of nanocapsule technology, especially the continuous development of new wall materials and catalysts, new preparation technology, and new production equipment, nanocapsule technology will be used more widely in medicine, food, cosmetics, pesticides, petroleum products, and many other fields.

A Review on Polymer and Lipid-Based Nanocarriers and Its Application to Nano-Pharmaceutical and Food-Based Systems

Recently, owing to well-controlled release, enhanced distribution and increased permeability, nanocarriers used for alternative drug and food-delivery strategies have received increasingly attentions. Nanocarriers have attracted a large amount of interest as potential carriers of various bioactive molecules for multiple applications. Drug and food-based delivery via polymeric-based nanocarriers and lipid-based nanocarriers has been widely investigated. Nanocarriers, especially liposomes, are more and more widely used in the area of novel nano-pharmaceutical or food-based design. Herein, we aimed to discuss the recent advancement of different surface-engineered nanocarriers type, along with cutting-edge applications for food and nanomedicine and highlight the alternative of phytochemical as nanocarrier. Additionally, safety concern of nanocarriers was also highlighted.

Peptide Design and Self-assembly into Targeted Nanostructure and Functional Materials

Peptides have been extensively utilized to construct nanomaterials that display targeted structure through hierarchical assembly. The self-assembly of both rationally designed peptides derived from naturally occurring domains in proteins as well as intuitively or computationally designed peptides that form β-sheets and helical secondary structures have been widely successful in constructing nanoscale morphologies with well-defined 1-d, 2-d, and 3-d architectures. In this review, we discuss these successes of peptide self-assembly, especially in the context of designing hierarchical materials. In particular, we emphasize the differences in the level of peptide design as an indicator of complexity within the targeted self-assembled materials and highlight future avenues for scientific and technological advances in this field.

A Close Look at Molecular Self-Assembly with the Transmission Electron Microscope

Molecular self-assembly is pervasive in the formation of living and synthetic materials. Knowledge gained from research into the principles of molecular self-assembly drives innovation in the biological, chemical, and materials sciences. Self-assembly processes span a wide range of temporal and spatial domains and are often unintuitive and complex. Studying such complex processes requires an arsenal of analytical and computational tools. Within this arsenal, the transmission electron microscope stands out for its unique ability to visualize and quantify self-assembly structures and processes. This review describes the contribution that the transmission electron microscope has made to the field of molecular self-assembly. An emphasis is placed on which TEM methods are applicable to different structures and processes and how TEM can be used in combination with other experimental or computational methods. Finally, we provide an outlook on the current challenges to, and opportunities for, increasing the impact that the transmission electron microscope can have on molecular self-assembly.

Polymeric nanocapsules: A review on design and production methods for pharmaceutical purpose

Polymeric nanocapsules have extensive application potential in medical, biological, and pharmaceutical fields, and, therefore, much research has been dedicated to their production. Indeed, production protocols and the materials used are decisive for obtaining the desired nanocapsules characteristics and biological performance. In addition to that, several technological strategies have been developed in the last decade to improve processing techniques and form more valuable nanocapsules. This review provides a guide to current methods for developing polymeric nanocapsules, reporting aspects to be considered when choosing appropriate materials, and discussing different ways to produce nanocapsules for superior performances.

Reconfigurable Multicompartment Emulsion Drops Formed by Nematic Liquid Crystals and Immiscible Perfluorocarbon Oils

Liquid crystalline (LC) oils offer the basis of stimuli-responsive LC-in-water emulsions. Although past studies have explored the properties of single-phase LC emulsions, few studies have focused on complex multicompartment emulsions containing co-existing isotropic and LC domains. In this paper, we report a study of multiphase emulsions using LCs and immiscible perfluoroalkanes dispersed in water or glycerol (the latter continuous phase is used to enable characterization). We found that the nematogen 4'-pentyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5CB) anchors homeotropically (perpendicularly) and weakly at liquid perfluorononane (F9) interfaces, consistent with the smectic layering of 5CB molecules. The proposed role of smectic layering is supported by experiments performed with 4-(trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile, a nematogen that possesses a cyclohexyl group that frustrates the smectic packing and leads to tilted orientations at the F9 interface. By employing perfluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants in combination with multiphase 5CB and F9 emulsion droplets dispersed in a continuous water or glycerol phase, we observe a range of emulsion droplet morphologies to form, including core-shell and Janus structures, with internal organizations that reflect an interplay of interfacial (anchoring energies; F9 and glycerol) and elastic energies within the confines of the geometry of the emulsion droplet. By comparing experimental observations to simulations of the LC-perfluorocarbon droplets based on a Landau-de Gennes model of the free energy, we place bounds on the orientation-dependent interfacial energies that underlie the internal ordering of these complex emulsions. Additionally, by forming core-shells emulsion droplets from 5CB (shell) and perfluoroheptane (cores), we demonstrate how a liquid-to-vapor phase transition in the perfluorocarbon core can be used to actuate the droplet and rapidly thin the nematic shell. Overall, the results reported in this paper demonstrate that multiphase LC emulsions formed from mixtures of perfluoroalkanes and LCs provide new opportunities to engineer hierarchical and stimuli-responsive emulsion systems.

Stabilization of Dispersed Oil Droplets in Nanoemulsions by Synergistic Effects of the Gemini Surfactant, PHPA Polymer, and Silica Nanoparticle

Nanoemulsion systems comprising n-heptane (oleic component), stabilized by the {gemini surfactant (14-6-14 GS) + polymer [partially hydrolyzed poly-acrylamide (PHPA)] + silica (SiO₂) nanoparticle} shell and dispersed in aqueous phase, were synthesized by ultrasonication (high-energy method). Influence of ultrasonication time on nanoemulsion kinetics was investigated to predict the saturation droplet diameter. Morphological analysis by transmission electron cryomicroscopy imaging showed that oleic phase appears as uniformly dispersed spherical droplets in 14-6-14 GS-stabilized nanoemulsion, which on PHPA addition changes into a network structure consisting of larger oil droplets. 14-6-14 + PHPA + SiO₂ nanoemulsion systems show more effective packing arrangement with irregular-shaped (nonspherical) droplets. Dynamic light scattering studies identified droplet size distribution profiles in the range 4.2-25.4 nm for the surfactant-stabilized nanoemulsion, 125.9-358.8 nm for the surfactant-polymer nanoemulsion, and 88.4-222.3 nm for the surfactant-polymer-nanoparticle-based nanoemulsion in optimal dosage(s). Statistical analyses were performed using normal, log-normal, and Cauchy-Lorentz distribution functions. A modified form of Hinze theory was employed to model droplet behavior in analyzed nanoemulsion systems. Zeta potential values of nanoemulsions were studied at different time intervals to determine kinetic stability as well as corroborate Hinze model findings. In summary, this article aims at investigating nanoemulsion droplet stability by thorough examination of electrostatic repulsive barrier and steric hindrance effects.

Toward the Formulation of Stable Micro and Nano Double Emulsions through a Silica Coating on Internal Water Droplets

Delivery systems able to coencapsulate both hydrophilic and hydrophobic species are of great interest in both fundamental research and industrial applications. Water-in-oil-in-water (w₁/O/W₂) emulsions are interesting systems for this purpose, but they suffer from limited stability. In this study, we propose an innovative approach to stabilize double emulsions by the synthesis of a silica membrane at the water/oil interface of the primary emulsion (i.e., inner w₁/O emulsion). This approach allows the formulation of stable double emulsions through a two-step process, enabling high encapsulation efficiencies of model hydrophilic dyes encapsulated in the internal droplets. This approach also decreases the scale of the double droplets up to the nanoscale, which is not possible without silica stabilization. Different formulation and processing parameters were explored in order to optimize the methodology. Physicochemical characterization was performed by dynamic light scattering, encapsulation efficiency measurements, release profiles, and optical and transmission electron microscopies.

Cross-talk between emulsion drops: how are hydrophilic reagents transported across oil phases?

Emulsion drops are frequently used as vessels, for example, to conduct biochemical reactions in small volumes or to perform screening assays at high throughputs while consuming minimal sample volumes. These applications typically require drops that do not allow exchange of reagents such that no cross-contamination occurs. Unfortunately, in many cases, reagents are exchanged between emulsion drops even if they have a low solubility in the surrounding phase, resulting in cross-contaminations. Here, we investigate the mechanism by which hydrophilic reagents are transported across an oil phase using water-oil-water double emulsion drops as a model system. Remarkably, even large objects, including 11 000 base pair double-stranded circular DNA are transported across oil shells. Importantly, this reagent transport, that is to a large extent caused by aqueous drops that spontaneously form at the water-oil interface, is not limited to double emulsions but also occurs between single emulsion drops. We demonstrate that the uncontrolled reagent transport can be decreased by at least an order of magnitude if appropriate surfactants that lower the interfacial tension only moderately are employed or if the shell thickness of double emulsions is decreased to a few hundreds of nanometers.
