Abstract
Rapid adsorption of surfactants onto a freshly formed interface is vital for emulsification because emulsification is a competitive process occurring between the very short time span of interface formation and surfactant mass transport. The biosurfactant surfactin has been previously reported to reach adsorption equilibrium at the hydrophobic/hydrophilic interface within hundreds of milliseconds and rapidly reduce the interfacial tension compared to chemically synthesized surfactants. According to a prior study, surfactin is expected to exhibit good performance in stabilizing micro-droplets of oil within the aging time scale of milliseconds. Herein, the stabilities of micro-droplets of n-hexadecane in the presence of a biosurfactant, surfactin (C15-SFT), and a chemically synthesized surfactant, sodium cetyl benzene sulfonate (8-SCBS), were investigated using a microfluidic method. The coalescence frequency of micro-droplets, the evolution of micro-droplet size, and the coalescence time of micro-droplets were evaluated. The results indicated that C15-SFT exhibited superiority over 8-SCBS in stabilizing the micro-droplets of n-hexadecane. Biosurfactant C15-SFT effectively reduced the fusion probability between oil droplets and elongated the coalescence time compared to 8-SCBS, and these phenomena were obvious at a shorter aging time (150 ms) and lower surfactant concentration (0.1 × critical micelle concentration). The stabilities of micro-droplets increased with aging time and the bulk concentration of surfactants. Stable micro-droplets of n-hexadecane were formed in 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 C15-SFT solution at 600 ms aging time, and the bulk concentration was 1 × 10-3 mol L-1 in the case of 8-SCBS. The micro-droplets rarely coalesced in the presence of 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 C15-SFT after 600 ms aging time, but the micro-droplets in 1 × 10-4 mol L-1 8-SCBS coalesced frequently in the midstream and downstream of the coalescence chamber, and big droplets were dominant in the emulsion. The coalescence time of micro-droplets stabilized by C15-SFT was obviously longer than that of those stabilized by 8-SCBS under the same condition, indicating that the interfacial film formed by C15-SFT has much strength to resist coalescence during collisions. This work is helpful for understanding the activity of lipopeptides in the very short early stage of the emulsification process, laying the foundation for biosurfactant research in the fields of enhanced oil recovery, bioremediation of contaminated water or soil, etc.

Abstract
Stabilizing emulsion droplets with amphiphilic emulsifiers are the current prevailing method, but the extensive use of such amphiphilic substances has caused widespread concerns. In this Perspective, three traditional methods for the stabilization of emulsion droplets according to the type of emulsifiers used are outlined, and the emphasis is placed on the mechanism of steric hindrance for emulsion stabilization. Then, we provide a concise introduction and discussion of the fast interfacial polymerization method as a new strategy for preparing stable emulsifier-free emulsion droplets with a polymer film, including its research background, current progress, and possible development directions. It is anticipated that this paper will promote the development of emulsifier-free emulsion production via fast interfacial polymerization and other related methods.

Abstract
Turbulent drop breakup is of large importance for applications such as food and pharmaceutical processing, as well as of substantial fundamental scientific interest. Emulsification typically takes place in the presence of surface-active emulsifiers (natural occurring and/or added). Under equilibrium conditions, these lower the interfacial tension, enabling deformation and breakup. However, turbulent deformation is fast in relation to emulsifier kinetics. Little is known about the details of how the emulsifier influences drop deformation under turbulent conditions. During the last years, significant insight in the mechanism of turbulent drop breakup has been reached using numerical experiments. However, these studies typically use a highly simplistic description of how the interface responds to turbulent stress. This study investigates how the limited exchange rate of emulsifier between the bulk and the interface influences the deformation process in turbulent drop breakup for application-relevant emulsifiers and concentrations, in the context of state-of-the-art single drop breakup simulations. In conclusion, if the Weber number is high or the emulsifier is supplied at a concentration giving an adsorption time less than 1/10th of the drop breakup time, deformation proceeds as if the emulsifier adsorbed infinitely fast. Otherwise, the limited emulsifier kinetics delays breakup and can alter the breakup mechanism.

Abstract
In this study, surface modification aimed to enhance the compatibility between a hydrophilic inorganic filler and polypropylene (PP) matrix using hydrophobic treatment. Lauric acid, butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride were employed to modify the filler surface. After treatment, inorganic filler/PP composites were produced using melt-mixing and extrusion-injection molding processes. The study focused on investigating compatibility and migration behavior between the filler and matrix. The findings indicated that hydrophobic modification, specifically with butyl acrylate and maleic anhydride, improved migration issues in nano-whisker, while maintaining favorable mechanical properties even under accelerated thermal aging. However, excessive hydrophobicity induced by superhydrophobic treatment using lauric acid led to reduced compatibility with the matrix, compromising its effectiveness. Consequently, the study revealed the potential of surface modification to enhance interfacial properties and mitigate migration concerns in PP composites for automotive applications.

Abstract
In order to explore the interface adsorption mechanism of hydroxyl-substituted alkylbenzene sulfonates, the interfacial tension relaxation method was used to investigate the dilational rheology properties of sodium 2-hydroxy-3-octyl-5-octylbenzene sulfonate (C8C8OHphSO3Na) and sodium 2-hydroxy-3-octyl-5-decylbenzene sulfonate (C8C10OHphSO3Na) at the gas-liquid interface and oil-water interface. The effect of the length of the hydroxyl para-alkyl chain on the interfacial behavior of the surfactant molecules was investigated, and the main controlling factors of the interfacial film properties under different conditions were obtained. The experimental results show that for the gas-liquid interface, the long-chain alkyl groups adjacent to the hydroxyl group in the hydroxyl-substituted alkylbenzene sulfonate molecules tend to extend along the interface, showing strong intermolecular interaction, which is the main reason why the dilational viscoelasticity of the surface film is higher than that of ordinary alkylbenzene sulfonates. The length of the para-alkyl chain has little effect on the viscoelastic modulus. With the increase in surfactant concentration, the adjacent alkyl chain also began to extend into the air, and the factors controlling the properties of the interfacial film changed from interfacial rearrangement to diffusion exchange. For the oil-water interface, the presence of oil molecules will hinder the interface tiling of the hydroxyl-protic alkyl, and the dilational viscoelasticity of C8C8 and C8C10 will be greatly reduced relative to the surface. The main factor controlling the properties of the interfacial film is the diffusion exchange of surfactant molecules between the bulk phase and the interface from the beginning.

Abstract
A ferrocene surfactant can be switched between single and double head form (FcN+ C12 /Fc+ N+ C12 ) triggered by redox reaction. FcN+ C12 can neither stabilize an O/W emulsion alone nor an oil-in-dispersion emulsion in combination with alumina nanoparticles due to the steric hindrance of the ferrocene group. However, such steric hindrance can be overcome by increasing the charge density in Fc+ N+ C12 , so that oil-in-dispersion emulsions can be co-stabilized by Fc+ N+ C12 and alumina nanoparticles at very low concentrations (1×10-7 M (≈50 ppb) and 0.001 wt %, respectively). Not only can reversible formation/destabilization of oil-in-dispersion emulsions be achieved by redox reaction, but also reversible transformation between oil-in-dispersion emulsions and Pickering emulsions can be obtained through reversing the charge of alumina particles by adjusting the pH. The results provide a new protocol for the design of surfactants for stabilization of smart oil-in-dispersion emulsions.

Abstract
The kinetics of spontaneous emulsification is investigated on aqueous pendant drops in paraffin oil. Optical microscopy in transmission mode is used for high-spatial-resolution image recording. The influence of a lipophilic surfactant (Span 80) and two water-soluble surfactants (CTAB and SDS) is investigated. As time runs, the drop interface turns opaque due to the formation of microstructures associated with spontaneous emulsification. The time evolution of this phenomenon is shown to depend upon temperature and surfactant concentration, which leads to an overall shrinkage due to gradual water uptake and transport into paraffin oil. Spontaneous emulsification kinetics depends upon the chemical composition. Higher concentrations of Span 80 and CTAB (resp. SDS) are shown to promote (resp. hinder) water transport. This work provides new insights into the understanding of spontaneous emulsification when combining the properties of non-ionic and ionic surfactants.

Abstract
The manufacturing of stable emulsion is a very important challenge for the cosmetic industry, which has motivated intense research activity for replacing conventional molecular stabilizers with colloidal particles. These allow minimizing the hazards and risks associated with the use of conventional molecular stabilizers, providing enhanced stability to the obtained dispersions. Therefore, particle-stabilized emulsions (Pickering emulsions) present many advantages with respect to conventional ones, and hence, their commercialization may open new avenues for cosmetic formulators. This makes further efforts to optimize the fabrication procedures of Pickering emulsions, as well as the development of their applicability in the fabrication of different cosmetic formulations, necessary. This review tries to provide an updated perspective that can help the cosmetic industry in the exploitation of Pickering emulsions as a tool for designing new cosmetic products, especially creams for topical applications.

Abstract
We describe an experiment container with light scattering and imaging diagnostics for experiments on soft matter aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The suite of measurement capabilities can be used to study different materials in exchangeable sample cell units. The currently available sample cell units and future possibilities for foams, granular media, and emulsions are presented in addition to an overview of the design and the diagnostics of the experiment container. First results from measurements performed on ground and during the commissioning aboard the ISS highlight the capabilities of the experiment container to study the different materials.

Abstract
The interfacial tension (IFT) of a fluid-fluid interface plays an important role in a wide range of applications and processes. When low IFT is desired, surface active compounds (e.g. surfactants) can be added to the system. Numerous attempts have been made to relate changes in IFT arising from such compounds to the specific nature of the interface. However, the IFT is controlled by an interplay of factors such as temperature and molecular structure of surface-active compounds, which make it difficult to predict IFT as those conditions change. In this study, we present the results from molecular dynamics simulations revealing the specific role surfactants play in IFT. We find that, in addition to reducing direct contact between the two fluids, surfactants serve to increase the disorder at the interface (related to interfacial entropy) and consequently reduce the water/oil IFT, especially when surfactants are present at high surface density. Our results suggest that surfactants that yield more disordered interfacial films (e.g. with flexible and/or unsaturated tails) reduce the water/oil IFT more effectively than surfactants which yield highly ordered interfacial films. Our results shed light on some of the factors that control IFT and could have important practical implications in industrial applications such as the design of cosmetics, food products, and detergents.

Abstract
Particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces are ubiquitous in academia and industry, which has fostered extensive research efforts trying to disentangle the physico-chemical bases underlying the trapping of particles to fluid/fluid interfaces as well as the properties of the obtained layers. The understanding of such aspects is essential for exploiting the ability of particles on the stabilization of fluid/fluid interface for the fabrication of novel interface-dominated devices, ranging from traditional Pickering emulsions to more advanced reconfigurable devices. This review tries to provide a general perspective of the physico-chemical aspects associated with the stabilization of interfaces by colloidal particles, mainly chemical isotropic spherical colloids. Furthermore, some aspects related to the exploitation of particle-laden fluid/fluid interfaces on the stabilization of emulsions and foams will be also highlighted. It is expected that this review can be used for researchers and technologist as an initial approach to the study of particle-laden fluid layers.

Abstract
Surfactant adsorption to fluid interfaces is ubiquitous in biological systems, industrial applications, and scientific fields. Herein, we unravel the impact of the hydrophobic phase (air and oil) and the role of oil polarity on the adsorption of surfactants to fluid interfaces. We investigated the adsorption of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate), cationic (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide), and non-ionic (polyoxyethylene-(23)-monododecyl ether) surfactants at different interfaces, including air and oils, with a wide range of polarities. The surfactant-induced interfacial tension decrease, called the interfacial pressure, correlates linearly with the initial interfacial tension of the clean oil-water interface and describes the experimental results of over 30 studies from the literature. The higher interfacial competition of surfactant and polar oil molecules caused the number of adsorbed molecules at the interface to drop. Further, we found that the critical micelle concentration of surfactants in water correlates to the solubility of the oil molecules in water. Hence, the nature of the oil affects the adsorption behavior and equilibrium state of the surfactant at fluid interfaces. These results broaden our understanding and enable better predictability of the interactions of surfactants with hydrophobic phases, which is essential for emulsion, foam, and capsule formation, pharmaceutical commodities, cosmetics, and many food products.

Abstract
Electrophoresis (EP) of droplets is an intriguing phenomenon that has applications in biological systems, separation strategies, and reactor engineering. Droplet EP is significantly different from the classic particle EP because of droplet characteristics such as a mobile surface charge and the nonrigidity of the interface. Also, the liquid-liquid system, where there is an interplay between the hydrodynamic and electrokinetic forces in both phases, adds to the complexity of electrophoretic motion. Due to the vast amount of potential applications of droplet EP, a mechanistic understanding of the droplet motion in the presence of an external electric field is crucial. This review provides a background on the mechanism of droplet EP and summarizes the intrinsic interplay between the different relevant forces in these systems. The review also describes the key differences between droplet EP and particle EP, and the impact of these differences on droplet mobility. Additionally, we schematically summarize the effects of key parameters on droplet EP mobility, such as electric double layer polarization, the development of internal flow inside a droplet and boundary effects.

Abstract
In this review, we highlight and discuss the effects of interfacial properties on the major mechanisms governing the aging of emulsions: flocculation, coalescence and Ostwald ripening. The process of emulsification is also addressed, as it is well recognized that the adsorption properties of emulsifiers play an important role on it. The consolidated background on these phenomena is briefly summarised based on selected literature, reporting relevant findings and results, and discussing some criticalities. The typical experimental approaches adopted to investigate the above effects are also summarised, underlining in particular the role of adsorption at the droplet interface. Attention is paid to different types of surface-active species involved with emulsion production, including solid particles. The latter being of increasing interest in a wide variety of emulsions-related products and technologies in various fields. The possibility to stop the long term aging caused by Ostwald ripening in emulsions is also discussed, quantifying under which conditions it may occur in practice.

Abstract
We report here an overview of current trends and a selection of recent results regarding the characterization of emulsions by Diffusing Wave Spectroscopy (DWS). We provide a synopsis of the state of the art of the DWS technique, and a critical discussion of experiments performed on samples in which Brownian and ballistic dynamics coexist. A novel analysis scheme is introduced for DWS experiments on creaming or sedimenting emulsions, allowing to extract not only average values for drop size and drop dynamics - as usual in DWS - but also properties related to the width of the distributions governing these quantities. This analysis scheme starts from a realistic Monte Carlo simulation of light diffusing in the volume of the sample and reaching the detector. This simulation is more accurate than the analytical expressions available for the idealized geometries normally used in DWS interpretation. By disentangling Brownian and ballistic motions we directly access the variance of velocity distribution, σv. In relatively unstable emulsions σv governs the frequency of drop-drop collisions and subsequent coalescence events. Furthermore, when gravity dominates dynamics, as in emulsions subject to sedimentation or creaming, σv is strongly related to the 2nd and 4th moments of drop size distribution. This novel analysis scheme is exemplified investigating freshly formed model emulsions. Results are validated by comparison with microscopy imaging. This analysis is then extended to emulsions with a much broader drop size distribution, resembling those that are planned to be investigated in microgravity by the Soft Matter Dynamics facility onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This review is concluded by sketching some promising directions, and suggesting useful complementarities between DWS and other techniques, for the characterization of transient regimes in emulsions, and of destabilization processes of great practical importance.

Abstract
The development of an emulsion is an important challenge in many fields, such as agrochemicals, pharmaceutics, paints, cosmetics, inkjet printing, and food science. However, the traditional strategies that refer to the empirical value and complex secondary additives cannot reflect the influence of the structure, content, compound, and adsorption of emulsifiers. Here, we propose a simple and effective strategy to develop the emulsion, wherein the emulsifiers are chosen based on the dilational rheological properties of the interfacial films at the molecular level. The dilational rheological properties of polyoxyethylene (80) castor oil (EL-80), sorbitan monostearate (Span 60), and their emulsions were explored by the oscillating drop method. Based on the dilational rheological properties, the emulsions were prepared by the phase inversion emulsification technique. The results showed that the emulsion was stable and realized effective solid-liquid interfacial interaction, which was attributed to the large dilational modulus (intermolecular interaction) at the oil/water interface and loss modulus (molecular diffusion exchange) at the air/water interface. These factors reduced the Ostwald ripening and coalescence, and finally increased the spreading diameter. Additionally, the prochloraz 25% emulsion in water (EW) and difenoconazole 20% EW were developed to verify the feasibility of the strategy. Therefore, this research advances the understanding of an emulsion by interfacial dilational rheological properties, which can provide a simple and effective strategy to develop a stable emulsion and achieve an effective solid-liquid interfacial interaction of the emulsion.

Abstract
Purification and collection of industrial products from oil-water mixtures are commonly implemented processes. However, the efficiencies of such processes can be severely influenced by the presence of emulsifiers that induce the formation of small oil droplets dispersed in the mixtures. Understanding of this emulsifying effect and its counteractions which occur at the oil/water interface is therefore necessary for the improvement of designs of these processes. In this paper, we investigated the interfacial mechanisms of protein-induced emulsification and the opposing surfactant-induced demulsification related to corn oil refinement. At corn oil/water interfaces, the pH-dependent emulsifying function of zein protein, which is the major storage protein of corn, was elucidated by the surface/interface-sensitive sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy technique. The effective stabilization of corn oil droplets by zein protein was illustrated and correlated to its ordered amide I group at the oil/water interface. Substantial decrease of this ordering with the addition of three industrial surfactants to corn oil-zein solution mixtures was also observed using SFG, which explains the surfactant-induced destabilization and coalescence of small oil droplets. Surfactant-protein interaction was then demonstrated to be the driving force for the disordering of interfacial proteins, either by disrupting protein layers or partially excluding protein molecules from the interface. The ordered zein proteins at the interface were therefore revealed to be the critical factor for the formation of corn oil-water emulsion.

Abstract
A comparative study is reported on the interfacial properties of a set of surfactants and is discussed in terms of the effects on the features of the corresponding oil-water emulsions. The surfactants are saponin, Tween 80 and citronellol glucoside (CG), while the oil is Miglyol 812N—A Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil. Due to their high biocompatibility, all these compounds are variously utilized in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical products. Among the surfactants, which are all soluble in water, CG presents also an important solubility in oil, as shown by the measured partition coefficient. For these systems, dynamic and equilibrium interfacial tensions and dilational viscoelasticity are measured as a function of the surfactant concentration and analyzed according to available adsorption models. In order to compare these results with the time evolution of the corresponding emulsions, the actual surfactant concentration in the matrix phase of the emulsion is accounted for. This may differ significantly from the nominal concentration of the solutions before dispersing them, because of the huge area of droplets available for surfactant adsorption in the emulsion. Using this approach allows the derivation of the correlations between the observed emulsion behavior and the actual surfactant coverage of the droplet interface.

Abstract
Literature on bilgewater focuses on empirically determined treatment methods and lacks specific information on emulsion characteristics. Therefore, this review discusses potential emulsion stabilization mechanisms that occur in bilgewater and evaluates common approaches to study their behavior. Current knowledge on emulsion formation, stabilization, and destabilization is outlined to provide researchers and bilgewater treatment operators with the knowledge needed to determine emulsion prevention and treatment strategies. Furthermore, a broad assessment of bilgewater emulsion characterization techniques, from general water quality analysis to advanced droplet stability characterization methods are discussed in detail. Lastly, a survey of typical bilgewater characteristics and information on standard synthetic bilgewater mixtures used in the testing of oil pollution abatement equipment are presented. Overall, the goal of this article is to provide a better understanding of physical and thermodynamic properties of emulsions to help improve bilgewater treatment and management.

Abstract
Rapid and efficient demulsification (destabilizing of an emulsion) processes of a water in oil (W/O) emulsion were carried out in a three-dimensional electric spiral plate-type microchannel (3D-ESPM). In this experiment, the demulsifying efficiency of emulsions by 3D-ESPM was compared with that by gravity settling, the factors influencing demulsifying efficiency were investigated, and the induction period, cut size and residence time in the demulsification process were studied. The results showed that in contrast to the gravity settling method, 3D-ESPM can directly separate the disperse phase (water) instead of the continuous phase (oil). The maximum demulsifying efficiency of W/O emulsion in a single pass through the 3D-ESPM reached 90.3%, with a microchannel height of 200 μm, electric field intensity of 250 V /cm, microchannel angle of 180°, microchannel with 18 plates and a flow rate of 2 mL /min. An induction period of 0.6 s during the demulsification process was simulated with experimental data fitting. When the residence time of emulsion in 3D-ESPM was longer than the induction period, its demulsifying efficiency increased as the increase of the flow velocity due to the droplet coalescence effects of Dean vortices in the spiral microchannel. For this device a cut size of droplets of 4.5 μm was deduced. Our results showed that the demulsification process of W/O emulsion was intensified by 3D-ESPM based on the coupling effect between electric field-induced droplets migration and microfluidic hydrodynamic trapping.

Abstract
Damage to the water resources and environment as a consequence of oil production and use of fossil fuels, has increased the need for applying various technologies and developing effective materials to remove contaminates from oily wastewaters resources. One of the challenges for an economic industrial wastewater treatment is separation and reusability of the developed purifying agents. Development of magnetic materials could potentially facilitate easier and more economic separation of purifying agents. Therefore, herein we have synthesised an efficient and easily recyclable Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite using a hydrothermal process to investigate its purification capability for wastewater from Kermanshah oil refinery. The synthesised Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite was characterised using XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX, XRF and BET analysis. XRD result showed that the synthesised Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite comprised sodium aluminium silicate hydrate phase [01-072-7919, Na8(Al6Si30O72)(H2O)9.04] and cubic iron oxide phase [04-013-9808, Fe3O4]. Response Surface Method (RSM) combined with Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to identify the optimum operation parameters of the pollutant removal process. The effect of pH, contact time and Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite amount on the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) were investigated. It was found that pH was the most significant factor influencing COD and BOD removal but the quantity of Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite was the most influential factor on the turbidity removal capacity. The optimum removal process conditions were identified to be pH of 7.81, contact time of 15.8 min and Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite amount of 0.52% w/w. The results show that the regenerated Fe3O4/mordenite zeolite can be reused for five consecutive cycles in purification of petroleum wastes.

Abstract
Particle-laden interfaces are ubiquitous nowadays. The understanding of their properties and structure is essential for solving different problems of technological and industrial relevance; e.g. stabilization of foams, emulsions and thin films. These rely on the response of the interface to mechanical perturbations. The complex mechanical response appearing in particle-laden interfaces requires deepening on the understanding of physico-chemical mechanisms underlying the assembly of particles at interface which plays a central role in the distribution of particles at the interface, and in the complex interfacial dynamics appearing in these systems. Therefore, the study of particle-laden interfaces deserves attention to provide a comprehensive explanation on the complex relaxation mechanisms involved in the stabilization of fluid interfaces.
