New Method for the Corrosion Resistance of AZ31 Mg Alloy with a Porous Micro-Arc Oxidation Membrane as an Ionic Corrosion Inhibitor Container

Tribological properties of MAO ceramic coatings with annulus array texture on disposable surgical gloves

Introduction: In recent research, the expansion in the use of Mg alloys for biomedical applications has been approached by modifying their surfaces in conjunction with micro-arc oxidation (MAO) techniques which enhance their abrasion and corrosion resistance. Methods: In this study, combining laser texturing and MAO techniques to produce the dense ceramic coatings with microstructures. On the surface of the AZ31 Mg alloy, a micro-raised annulus array texture has been designed in order to increase the surface friction under liquid lubrication and to improve the operator's grip when holding the tool. For this work, the micro-morphology of the coatings was characterised, and the friction properties of the commonly used scalpel shank material 316 L, the untextured surface and the textured surface were comparatively analysed against disposable surgical gloves. Results and discussion: The results show that the Laser-MAO ceramic coating grows homogenous, the porosity decreases from 14.3% to 7.8%, and the morphology after friction indicates that the coating has good wear resistance. More specifically, the average coefficient of friction (COF) of the three types of gloves coated with Laser-MAO ceramic was higher than that of the 316 L and MAO ceramic coatings under the action of the annulus-integrated texture under the lubrication conditions of physiological saline and defatted sheep blood, which achieved the goal of increasing friction for the purpose of helping to prevent the problem of tool slippage from the hand.

Enhanced Corrosion Inhibition of Q235 Steel by N,S Co-Doped Carbon Dots: A Sustainable Approach for Industrial Pickling Corrosion Inhibitors

A high yield of environmentally friendly N,S-codoped (N,S-CDs) and N-doping carbon points (N-CDs) carbon dots was achieved through a biochemical oxidation reaction at room temperature in this study. Acetaldehyde, sodium hydroxide, benzotriazole (BTA), and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MB) with a similar structure were used as raw materials. The microstructure and properties of the corrosion inhibitor for Q235 steel were evaluated by various experiments. The results demonstrated enhanced corrosion inhibition rates of the N,S-CDs compared to the N-CDs using electrochemical tests (93.83% vs 77.65%) and weight loss experiments (96.35% vs 91.65%) at 50 mg/L, respectively, compared to the blank material, indicating that N,S codoping can significantly improve the corrosion inhibition effect of carbon dots. The significant improvements were attributed to the formation of dense adsorption films and the hydrophobic properties of N and S-CDs nanoparticles on the steel surface, leading to an effective barrier against corrosion. The findings from this study provide important experimental data for potential industrial applications and hold important practical value in the field of pickling corrosion inhibitors.

Diatomite@MoS2 Nanocomposite Layers as Composite Coating Targeting for Mg Alloys Endowed with Properties of Anticorrosion and Antiwear

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) demonstrates promising applications in enhancing the corrosion and wear resistance of metals, but the susceptibility of this nanomaterial to agglomeration hinders its overall performance. In this study, the externally assisted corrosion inhibitor sodium molybdate (SM) was successfully constructed in diatomaceous earth (DE) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). This not only served as a molybdenum source for MoS2 but also enabled the preparation of DE@MoS2-SM microcapsules, achieving a corrosion inhibitor loading of up to 23.23%. The corrosion testing reveals that the composite coating, when compared to the pure epoxy coating, exhibits an impedance modulus 2 orders of magnitude higher (1.80 × 109 Ω·cm2), offering prolonged protection for magnesium alloys over a 40 day period. Furthermore, a filler content of 3% sustains a coefficient of friction (COF) at 0.55 for an extended duration, indicating commendable stability and wear resistance. The protective performance is ascribed to the synergistic enhancement of corrosion and wear resistance in the coatings, facilitated by the pore structure of DE, the high hardness of MoS2, and the obstructive influence of Na2MoO4. This approach offers a straightforward and efficient means of designing microcapsules for use in corrosive environments, whose application can be extended in industrial fields. In particular, we promote the application of nautical instruments, underwater weapons, and seawater batteries in the shipbuilding industry and marine engineering.

Advancements in incorporating metal ions onto the surface of biomedical titanium and its alloys via micro-arc oxidation: a research review

The incorporation of biologically active metallic elements into nano/micron-scale coatings through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) shows significant potential in enhancing the biological characteristics and functionality of titanium-based materials. By introducing diverse metal ions onto titanium implant surfaces, not only can their antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and corrosion resistance properties be heightened, but it also promotes vascular growth and facilitates the formation of new bone tissue. This review provides a thorough examination of recent advancements in this field, covering the characteristics of commonly used metal ions and their associated preparation parameters. It also highlights the diverse applications of specific metal ions in enhancing osteogenesis, angiogenesis, antibacterial efficacy, anti-inflammatory and corrosion resistance properties of titanium implants. Furthermore, the review discusses challenges faced and future prospects in this promising area of research. In conclusion, the synergistic approach of micro-arc oxidation and metal ion doping demonstrates substantial promise in advancing the effectiveness of biomedical titanium and its alloys, promising improved outcomes in medical implant applications.

Insights into the Anticorrosion Performance of Solanum lyratum Leaf Extract for Copper in Sulfuric Acid Medium

In this paper, Solanum lyratum leaves were prepared into a corrosion inhibitor by a pure water extraction method. As a natural plant, S. lyratum leaf extract as a corrosion inhibitor has green features. S. lyratum leaf extract (SLLE) can effectively inhibit the corrosion of Cu in H₂SO₄ solution. The protective effect on copper in 0.5 mol/L H₂SO₄ solution was studied by electrochemical measurement, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and theoretical calculation. These results showed that the maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency (η) of SLLE for copper obtained in the electrochemical measurement at different temperatures is more than 90%. The adsorption of SLLE on copper surfaces conforms to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model. FTIR and XPS showed the bonding information. SEM and AFM proved that the SLLE can protect the copper from corrosion media. The interaction and inhibition mechanism between the SLLE and copper surface was further revealed at the molecular level by theoretical calculation.

Chromate-Free Corrosion Protection Strategies for Magnesium Alloys-A Review: Part II-PEO and Anodizing

Although hexavalent chromium-based protection systems are effective and their long-term performance is well understood, they can no longer be used due to their proven Cr(VI) toxicity and carcinogenic effect. The search for alternative protection technologies for Mg alloys has been going on for at least a couple of decades. However, surface treatment systems with equivalent efficacies to that of Cr(VI)-based ones have only begun to emerge much more recently. It is still proving challenging to find sufficiently protective replacements for Cr(VI) that do not give rise to safety concerns related to corrosion, especially in terms of fulfilling the requirements of the transportation industry. Additionally, in overcoming these obstacles, the advantages of newly introduced technologies have to include not only health safety but also need to be balanced against their added cost, as well as being environmentally friendly and simple to implement and maintain. Anodizing, especially when carried out above the breakdown potential (technology known as Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO)) is an electrochemical oxidation process which has been recognized as one of the most effective methods to significantly improve the corrosion resistance of Mg and its alloys by forming a protective ceramic-like layer on their surface that isolates the base material from aggressive environmental agents. Part II of this review summarizes developments in and future outlooks for Mg anodizing, including traditional chromium-based processes and newly developed chromium-free alternatives, such as PEO technology and the use of organic electrolytes. This work provides an overview of processing parameters such as electrolyte composition and additives, voltage/current regimes, and post-treatment sealing strategies that influence the corrosion performance of the coatings. This large variability of the fabrication conditions makes it possible to obtain Cr-free products that meet the industrial requirements for performance, as expected from traditional Cr-based technologies.

Robust Self-Healing Graphene Oxide-Based Superhydrophobic Coatings for Efficient Corrosion Protection of Magnesium Alloys

A self-healing coating possesses a broad application prospect in the metal corrosion protection area due to its pleasurable performance. By far, despite a great deal of research studies that have been reported in this field, it is still a challenge to construct an intrinsic self-healing surface that can repair a damaged structure and restore superhydrophobicity simultaneously. Herein, a self-healing superhydrophobic coating was fabricated by combining polydopamine (PDA)-functionalized Cu²⁺-doped graphene oxide (GO), octadecylamine (ODA), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which can recover the superhydrophobicity and microstructure of the coating after chemical/physical damage. The as-prepared self-healing coating displayed excellent liquid repellency with a water contact angle of 158.2 ± 2° and a sliding angle of 4 ± 1°, which endowed the Mg alloy with excellent anticorrosion performance. Once the coating is scratched, the local damaged structure will be automatically repaired through the chelation of catechol and Cu²⁺. Also, the superhydrophobicity of the coating can be rapidly restored under 1-sun irradiation even after being etched by O₂ plasma. Furthermore, the as-fabricated self-healing coating still exhibited excellent corrosion protection against a magnesium alloy after immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 30 days, which was attributed to the efficient repair of defects in GO by PDA through π-π interactions and the inherent chemical inertia of PDMS. Moreover, the as-fabricated self-healing coating also exhibited favorable mechanical stability, chemical durability, and weather resistance. This study paves a fresh insight into the design of robust self-healing coatings with huge application potential.

One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesized Nitrogen and Sulfur Codoped Carbon Dots for Acid Corrosion Inhibition of Q235 Steel

N and S codoped carbon dots having good water solubility have been successfully made by a novel hydrothermal method and characterized by FTIR, XPS, and TEM. The as-synthesized CDs were carbon particles rich in polar functional groups less than 10 nm in size. Electrochemical measurements, gravimetry, and surface analysis methods were utilized to examine the inhibition characteristics and adsorption mechanism of CDs on the carbon steel in acid pickling solutions. Electrochemical measurements verified that the CDs displayed adequate protection with high inhibition efficiency of 97.8%. The long-term weight-loss experiments up to 72 h further confirmed the excellent corrosion inhibition at room temperature and 313 K. The results presented are helpful for the formulation of more effective acid pickling corrosion inhibitors.

Synthesis and application of carbon substrate nano material from biomass for surface protection - Effect of variables, electrochemical and isotherm studies

Carbon based compounds have gained significant attention due to their environmental engineering applications with their favorable physical and chemical properties. Chitosan, a naturally available carbon based biopolymer, is identified as a potential surface protective agent and tested for its surface coverage properties to control the corrosion of mild steel. Chitosan nanoparticles (Ch-NP) were produced using a simple two-step synthesis to produce a corrosion protection agent for mild steel in 3.5% NaCl. The effect of immersion duration (4-24 h) was investigated using inhibitor extracts containing 400, 600, 800, and 1000 ppm at three temperatures, namely,305.15, 310.15, and 315.15 K. Inhibition efficiency increased with increase in the inhibitor dosage due to the development of protective surface film. An integrated electrochemical study was performed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and gravimetric measurement. Ch-NP has a mixed-type adsorption behavior for mild steel surface. The Langmuir isotherm was used to characterize the adsorption of Ch-NP molecules on the surface of mild steel. Tafel study confirmed the inhibitor examined as mixed type. Ch-NP demonstrated a high inhibitory effectiveness of 91% under the tested conditions and proved to be an effective alternative for industrial applications.

Superhydrophobic Coatings with Photothermal Self-Healing Chemical Composition and Microstructure for Efficient Corrosion Protection of Magnesium Alloy

Self-healing superhydrophobic coatings have a wide potential for practical applications by prolonging their lifespan, but still suffer from some shortcomings, for example, difficulty in repairing microstructure damage, limited self-healing cycles, and more importantly the inability to self-heal while in service. Herein, we present the fabrication of superhydrophobic coatings having photothermal self-healing chemical composition and microstructure for the high performance anticorrosion of Mg alloy. The coatings contain a shape-memory polymer (SMP) primer and an upper superhydrophobic coating composed of fluorinated polysiloxane-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PF-POS@MWCNTs). The coatings have good superhydrophobicity, photothermal effect, and anticorrosion performance. The coatings show excellent self-healing performance in response to chemical and microstructure damage, such as rapid self-healing under 1 sun irradiation in 10 min, complete self-healing after serious damage (e.g., 10 damage and self-healing cycles and complex microstructure damage), and even self-healing under natural sunlight in 4 h. Moreover, the self-healed coatings show good corrosion protection for magnesium alloy in the neutral salt spray test. These are because of the combination of the SMP primer with good shape-memory effect and the PF-POS@MWCNTs coating with good superhydrophobicity, photothermal effect, and embedded PF-POS. The coatings are self-healable under natural sunlight while in service and thus may find applications in diverse fields.

Design and Fabrication of a Sandwichlike Zn/Cu/Al-Zr Coating for Superior Anticorrosive Protection Performance of ZM5 Mg Alloy

A new three-layered film was fabricated on magnesium (Mg) alloy via electroplating to guard against corrosion in a chloride aqueous environment, which consisted of an underlying double-layered zinc/copper (Zn/Cu) and a top aluminum-zirconium (Al-Zr) layer. The Zn/Cu underlayers not only impeded the galvanic corrosion between the Al-Zr coating and Mg alloy but also improved the adhesive ability between the substrate and the upper Al-Zr layer. Herein, we discussed the nucleus sizes of Al-Zr coatings at the stage of nucleation carried out with different contents of ZrCl₄ in AlCl₃-1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid. The sandwichlike three-layered Zn/Cu/Al-Zr coatings were systematically investigated by surface morphology, phase structure, hardness, anticorrosion performances, and first-principles calculations. The corrosion current density declined from 1.461 × 10^-3 A·cm^-2 of bare Mg to 4.140 × 10^-7 A·cm^-2 of the Zn/Cu/Al-Zr3 sample. Neutral salt spray testing demonstrated that the Zn/Cu/Al-Zr3 sample showed no evident signs of corrosion after 6 days of exposure. The enhancement of the corrosion protection property was related to the fact that the application of the Cu layer changed the corrosion direction from initial longitudinal corrosion to extended lateral corrosion and the top Al-Zr coating hindered the transmission of aggressive ions. In addition, upon increasing the Zr content in the alloy films, the Fermi energy reduced initially and then increased. The Al-Zr3 alloy with 8.3 atom % Zr showed the lowest Fermi energy (-3.0823 eV), which exhibited the most efficient corrosion protection. These results showed that the prepared three-layered coating provided reliable corrosion protection to Mg alloy and may thus promote its practical applications.

Engineering a Bioactive Hybrid Coating for In Vitro Corrosion Control of Magnesium and Its Alloy

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are promising biodegradable metallic implant materials. However, their clinical applications are limited by their fast corrosion rate in the biological environment. In this work, with an outlook to improve the in vitro corrosion resistance of Mg and WE43 Mg alloy, a layer-by-layer interfacially engineered anticorrosive and bioactive coating consisting of a natural oxide lower layer, hydroxyapatite (HA) middle layer, and silk fibroin (SF) top layer was fabricated and investigated. Anodization was used to create natural oxide layer induced microroughness on substrates. The electrochemically deposited HA layer improved the surface microroughness and microhardness but significantly decreased Mg ion release, hydrogen gas evolution, and weight loss in simulated body fluid. The spin-coated SF layer further decreased hydrophilicity, in vitro degradation, and corrosion rate. The nonspecific and specific intermolecular interactions between fabricated layers along with their mechanical interlocking interface contributed to improved adhesion strength and integrity of the coating. The SF+HA-coated samples showed enhanced degradation and corrosion resistance due to a synergistic effect of the underlying HA layer, hindering the ingress of aggressive ions and the top hydrophobic SF layer, preventing the ingress of corrosive solution. The SF+HA-coated Mg and WE43 Mg alloy samples exhibited 50 and 26 times decreased corrosion rate, respectively, compared to uncoated samples. Moreover, in vitro cytotoxicity and cell culture studies using a mouse fibroblast cell showed that the SF+HA hybrid coating improved the cell viability, attachment, and proliferation, with cells exhibiting elongated morphology on coated samples as compared to a round shape on uncoated samples.

Superhydrophobic and Self-Healing Mg-Al Layered Double Hydroxide/Silane Composite Coatings on the Mg Alloy Surface with a Long-Term Anti-corrosion Lifetime

Both a superhydrophobic structure and layered double hydroxide (LDH) coating were effective to improve the corrosion resistance of alloys. In this study, a superhydrophobic composite coating based on LDHs was constructed on Mg alloy by laser treatment, in situ growth of Mg-Al LDHs, and modification with octadecyl-trimethoxy-silane (OTS). The so-obtained composite coating was coded as L-LDHs-OTS, where L stands for laser treatment. Results showed that the L-LDHs-OTS composite coating presented the best anti-corrosion performance and the corrosion current density was reduced by about 5 orders of magnitude compared with that of the Mg alloy substrate. The excellent corrosion resistance was related to the superhydrophobicity of the composite coating, the compactness and ion-exchange capacity of the LDH layer, and the dense Si-O-Si network within the OTS layer. Moreover, the L-LDHs-OTS composite coating was still effective after 20 days of immersion tests, showing good long-term corrosion resistance due to the existence of hydrophobicity of the composite coating and the self-healing ability of LDHs.

Long-term corrosion protection for magnesium alloy by two-layer self-healing superamphiphobic coatings based on shape memory polymers and attapulgite

Magnesium (Mg) alloy has wide potential applications due to its unique properties, but is apt to corrosion. Recently, superhydrophobic coatings are receiving great interest for corrosion protection of metals but suffer from short lifespan. Here, we report a strategy for long-term corrosion protection of Mg alloy by designing two-layer self-healing superamphiphobic coatings based on shape memory polymers (SMP) and attapulgite. The superamphiphobic coatings are composed of a bottom SMP coating containing a corrosion inhibitor (1, 2, 3-benzotriazole, BTA) and ceresine wax microparticles and a top superamphiphobic attapulgite coating. The two-layer self-healing coatings have excellent superamphiphobicity and initial anti-corrosion performance. The Mg alloy with the coatings can withstand immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 80 days and neutral salt spray with 5 wt% NaCl for 54 days. Furthermore, the coatings show excellent self-healing capability towards various physical damages, such as 10 scratching/self-healing cycles at the same position, hexagonal star scratching and grid scratching. Moreover, the physically damaged coatings exhibit self-healing behavior of the microstructure and superhydrophobicity, driven by the shape memory effect of the bottom SMP layer. Thus, the self-healed coatings can still withstand 60 days of 3.5 wt% NaCl solution immersion and 30 days of 5 wt% NaCl salt spray. This study paves the way for applying super anti-wetting coatings for long-term corrosion protection of metals.

Superhydrophobic ZIF-8-Based Dual-Layer Coating for Enhanced Corrosion Protection of Mg Alloy

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are regarded as the most promising engineering materials because of their unique property. However, the Mg alloys were easily corroded in humid environments, which restricted their wider applications. Herein, the superhydrophobic ZIF-8/PVDF/LDH (SZPL) double-layered coating was fabricated on Mg alloys via electrodeposition and dip-coating methods, which consisted of the underlying layered double hydroxide (LDH) transition structure and top superhydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) layer. Besides, the LDH transition structure not only worked as a protection shield but also strengthened the binding force between the substrate and the top superhydrophobic ZIF-8 layer. The top superhydrophobic ZIF-8 layer could serve as an armor on the LDH layer to further prevent the corrosive ions from infiltrating the microporous defects. In addition, the as-prepared SZPL double-layered coating showed robust superhydrophobic and self-cleaning properties, which could block the electrolyte invasion. Furthermore, the electrochemical tests demonstrated that the SZPL coating highly enhanced the corrosion protection ability of Mg alloys. Moreover, the superhydrophobic ZIF-8-based coating could still retain excellent anticorrosion property after immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 7 days. The enhanced anticorrosion ability was ascribed to the fact that a synergistic effect of the underlying LDH transition layer hindered the transmission of aggressive ions and the top superhydrophobic ZIF-8-based coating decreased the contact area of the substrate with corrosive solution. Therefore, such coatings offer a new strategy for fabricating excellent anticorrosive coatings with robust superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning performance on metal substrates.

Degradation, Bone Regeneration and Tissue Response of an Innovative Volume Stable Magnesium-Supported GBR/GTR Barrier Membrane

Introduction: Bioresorbable collagenous barrier membranes are used to prevent premature soft tissue ingrowth and to allow bone regeneration. For volume stable indications, only non-absorbable synthetic materials are available. This study investigates a new bioresorbable hydrofluoric acid (HF)-treated magnesium (Mg) mesh in a native collagen membrane for volume stable situations. Materials and Methods: HF-treated and untreated Mg were compared in direct and indirect cytocompatibility assays. In vivo, 18 New Zealand White Rabbits received each four 8 mm calvarial defects and were divided into four groups: (a) HF-treated Mg mesh/collagen membrane, (b) untreated Mg mesh/collagen membrane (c) collagen membrane and (d) sham operation. After 6, 12 and 18 weeks, Mg degradation and bone regeneration was measured using radiological and histological methods. Results: In vitro, HF-treated Mg showed higher cytocompatibility. Histopathologically, HF-Mg prevented gas cavities and was degraded by mononuclear cells via phagocytosis up to 12 weeks. Untreated Mg showed partially significant more gas cavities and a fibrous tissue reaction. Bone regeneration was not significantly different between all groups. Discussion and Conclusions: HF-Mg meshes embedded in native collagen membranes represent a volume stable and biocompatible alternative to the non-absorbable synthetic materials. HF-Mg shows less corrosion and is degraded by phagocytosis. However, the application of membranes did not result in higher bone regeneration.

One-Step in Situ Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide/Zn-Al Layered Double Hydroxide Film for Enhanced Corrosion Protection of Magnesium Alloys

As an effective and environmentally friendly material for corrosion prevention, layered double hydroxide (LDH) films have usually been degraded due to their inherent microporous structure. In this study, graphene derivatives were employed to enhance the corrosion resistance of LDH films. After ultrasonic treatment of a reaction solution mixture containing graphene oxide (GO) powder, a reduced graphene oxide/zinc-aluminum LDH (RGO/Zn-Al LDH) film was in situ synthesized on a magnesium alloy substrate by a one-step facile hydrothermal crystallization process. The characterization results demonstrated that the LDH nanosheets grew on both the GO surface and the magnesium substrate, and thus the agglomeration of graphene was effectively prevented. Furthermore, the GO plates were simultaneously reduced into RGO, which has better corrosion resistance. The as-prepared samples were individually assessed by potentiodynamic polarization measurements, and the RGO/Zn-Al LDH film showed good corrosion resistance with a lower corrosion current density (0.546 μA/cm²) than that of the bare substrate (33.2 μA/cm²) and Zn-Al LDH film (4.33 μA/cm²). The penetration resistance of the Zn-Al LDH film to a corrosive environment was significantly improved through the organic combination with graphene oxide, and this method provides a simple and facile approach to effectively enhance the corrosion protection performance of LDH materials.
