Nickel-Carbon-Zirconium Material Derived from Nickel-Oxide Clusters Installed in a Metal-Organic Framework Scaffold by Atomic Layer Deposition

Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Defined metal atom aggregates precisely incorporated into metal-organic frameworks

Nanosized metal aggregates (MAs), including metal nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoclusters (NCs), are often the active species in numerous applications. In order to maintain the active form of MAs in "use", they need to be anchored and stabilised, preventing agglomeration. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit a unique combination of properties, are of particular interest as a tunable and porous matrix to host MAs. A high degree of control in the synthesis towards atom-efficient and application-oriented MA@MOF composites is required to derive specific structure-property relationships and in turn to enable design of functions on the molecular level. Due to the versatility of MA@MOF (derived) materials, their applications are not limited to the obvious field of catalysis, but increasingly include 'out of the box' applications, for example medical diagnostics and theranostics, as well as specialised (bio-)sensoring techniques. This review focuses on recent advances in the controlled synthesis of MA@MOF materials en route to atom-precise MAs. The main synthetic strategies, namely 'ship-in-bottle', 'bottle-around-ship', and approaches to achieve novel hierarchical MA@MOF structures are highlighted and discussed while identifying their potential as well as their limitations. Hereby, an overview of standard characterisation methods that enable a systematic analysis procedure and state-of-art techniques that localise MA within MOF cavities are provided. While the perspectives of MA@MOF materials in general have been reviewed various times in the recent past, few atom-precise MAs inside MOFs have been reported so far, opening opportunities for future investigation.

MOF-enabled confinement and related effects for chemical catalyst presentation and utilization

A defining characteristic of nearly all catalytically functional MOFs is uniform, molecular-scale porosity. MOF pores, linkers and nodes that define them, help regulate reactant and product transport, catalyst siting, catalyst accessibility, catalyst stability, catalyst activity, co-catalyst proximity, composition of the chemical environment at and beyond the catalytic active site, chemical intermediate and transition-state conformations, thermodynamic affinity of molecular guests for MOF interior sites, framework charge and density of charge-compensating ions, pore hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, pore and channel rigidity vs. flexibility, and other features and properties. Collectively and individually, these properties help define overall catalyst functional behaviour. This review focuses on how porous, catalyst-containing MOFs capitalize on molecular-scale confinement, containment, isolation, environment modulation, energy delivery, and mobility to accomplish desired chemical transformations with potentially superior selectivity or other efficacy, especially in comparison to catalysts in homogeneous solution environments.

Zr-MOFs Integrated with a Guest Capturer and a Photosensitizer for the Simultaneous Adsorption and Degradation of 4-Chlorophenol

A bifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) was successfully designed to realize the purification of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Owing to the large-size mesopores of the MOF matrix NU-1000, β-CMCD (carboxylic β-cyclodextrin) could be incorporated into the frameworks with a density of 2.4% to pre-enrich the pollutant of 4-CP. Meanwhile, the photodegradation promoter [Pd(II) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphine] was in situ co-assembled with the organic ligand to realize its synchronous degradation. As for the current integrator, a Langmuir model was used to explain the adsorption isotherm, and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model exhibited a better fit to its catalytic degradation behavior. Thanks to the simultaneous presence of a capturer and a photodegradation promoter, the adsorption capacity of 4-CP reached as high as 296 mg g^-1, which was further completely detoxified within 60 min under simulated sunlight irradiation with a half-life time of only 5.98 min. Such excellent integrated decontamination properties prefigure the great promising potential of multifunctional MOFs in the field of pollution purification.

Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metal-Organic Gels for Oxygen Electrocatalysis: Structural and Compositional Considerations

Increasing demand for sustainable and clean energy is calling for the next-generation energy conversion and storage technologies such as fuel cells, water electrolyzers, CO₂ /N₂ reduction electrolyzers, metal-air batteries, etc. All these electrochemical processes involve oxygen electrocatalysis. Boosting the intrinsic activity and the active-site density through rational design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal-organic gels (MOGs) as precursors represents a new approach toward improving oxygen electrocatalysis efficiency. MOFs/MOGs afford a broad selection of combinations between metal nodes and organic linkers and are known to produce electrocatalysts with high surface areas, variable porosity, and excellent activity after pyrolysis. Some recent studies on MOFs/MOGs for oxygen electrocatalysis and their new perspectives in synthesis, characterization, and performance are discussed. New insights on the structural and compositional design in MOF/MOG-derived oxygen electrocatalysts are summarized. Critical challenges and future research directions are also outlined.

Advanced applications of Zr-based MOFs in the removal of water pollutants

The global water pollution is caused by the increase of industrial and agricultural activities, which have produced various toxic pollutants. Pollutants in water generally consist of metal ions, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), oil spills, organic dyes, and other organic pollutants. Amongst the adsorbents that have been developed to deal with pollutants in water, Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have drawn scientists' great attention due to their excellent stability and adjustable functionalization. Herein, the present review article introduces the synthetic methods of functionalized Zr-based MOFs and summarizes their applications in water pollution treatment. It also clarifies the interactions and removal mechanisms between pollutants and Zr-based MOFs. The use of these MOFs with eminent adsorption ability and recycling performance have been discussed in detail. Zr-based MOFs also face some challenges such as high cost, lack of real water environment applications, selective removal of pollutants, and low ability to remove composite pollutants. Future research should focus on addressing these issues. Although there is still a blank of the practical utility of Zr-based MOFs on a commercial scale, the research reported to date clearly shows that they are very promising materials for the water treatment.

Metal-Organic-Framework-Supported and -Isolated Ceria Clusters with Mixed Oxidation States

The formation of oxygen vacancies via reversible transitions between Ce(IV) and Ce(III) plays a crucial role in the propensity of cerium oxide to act as a supporting promoter in oxidative heterogeneous catalysis. An open challenge is, however, preparation of high-porosity, supported arrays of isolated ceria(IV, III) clusters with high porosity. Herein, we report two examples of oxy-Ce(IV, III) clusters supported and spatially isolated on an oxy-zirconium MOF, NU-1000. The clusters are introduced using either of two Ce complexes (precursors): Ce^IV(tmhd)₄ (tmhd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate) or Ce^III(iPrCp)₃ (iPrCp = tris(isopropyl-cyclopenta-dienyl), via SIM (solvothermal installation in MOFs). The prepared materials are named Ce-l-SIM-NU-1000 and Ce-n-SIM-NU-1000, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization shows that the ratio of Ce(III) to Ce(IV) oxidation states can be modulated. Difference envelope density analyses of X-ray scattering show that Ce_xO_yH_z clusters in Ce-n-SIM-NU-1000 are located between pairs of Zr₆ nodes, whereas in Ce-l-SIM-NU-1000, they are sited on MOF linkers throughout the micropores of NU-1000. Cluster size differences were further evaluated by pair function distribution (PDF) analyses of total X-ray scattering reveal that the node sited clusters contain of only a few cerium ions, whereas the linker-sited clusters each contain ∼90 cerium ions. The observed size appears to be defined by the size of NU-1000s triangular pores, that is, cluster formation appears to be pore templated. The Ce-SIM functionalized materials are catalytically active for hydrolysis of DMNP (dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate), a nerve-agent simulant. Conversion of a small fraction of the Ce(IV) ions in which the presence of small fractions of the cerium(IV) ions in Ce-l-SIM-NU-1000 to cerium(III) significantly enhances catalytic activity-perhaps by labilizing aqua ligands and facilitating simulant binding to the clusters Lewis-basic metal ions. While not explored here, the larger clusters, when partially reduced, are, we believe, candidate catalysts for O₂ activation and subsequent selective oxidation of organic substrates.
