A Cautionary Perspective on Hydrogel-Induced Concentration Gradient Generation for Studying Chemotaxis

The achievement of consistent and static chemical gradients is critically important in the study of diffusion and chemotaxis at the micro- and nanoscales. In this context, a number of groups have reported on hydrogel-based systems for generating concentration gradients. Here, we analyze the behavior of agarose and gelatin-based hydrogels in hybridization chambers of different heights. Our focus is on the issues that are caused by the presence of robust bulk fluid flows in such systems due to the solutes present in the hydrogel and/or the surrounding fluid. We describe the key insights derived from these experiments, offering practical guidelines for establishing gradients using hydrogel-based systems and make the community aware of different variables that can make the experiments nonreproducible and prone to misinterpretations.

Quorum Sensing in Emulsion Droplet Swarms Driven by a Surfactant Competition System

Quorum sensing enables unicellular organisms to probe their population density and perform behavior that exclusively occurs above a critical density. Quorum sensing is established in emulsion droplet swarms that float at a water surface and cluster above a critical density. The design involves competition between 1) a surface tension gradient that is generated upon release of a surfactant from the oil droplets, and thereby drives their mutual repulsion, and 2) the release of a surfactant precursor from the droplets, that forms a strong imine surfactant which suppresses the surface tension gradient and thereby causes droplet clustering upon capillary (Cheerios) attraction. The production of the imine-surfactant depends on the population density of the droplets releasing the precursor so that the clustering only occurs above a critical population density. The pH-dependence of the imine-surfactant formation is exploited to trigger quorum sensing upon a base stimulus: dynamic droplet swarms are generated that cluster and spread upon spatiotemporally varying acid and base conditions. Next, the clustering of two droplet subpopulations is coupled to a chemical reaction that generates a fluorescent signal. It is foreseen that quorum sensing enables control mechanisms in droplet-based systems that display collective responses in contexts of, e.g., sensing, optics, or dynamically controlled droplet-reactors.

Exploring Emergent Properties in Enzymatic Reaction Networks: Design and Control of Dynamic Functional Systems

The intricate and complex features of enzymatic reaction networks (ERNs) play a key role in the emergence and sustenance of life. Constructing such networks in vitro enables stepwise build up in complexity and introduces the opportunity to control enzymatic activity using physicochemical stimuli. Rational design and modulation of network motifs enable the engineering of artificial systems with emergent functionalities. Such functional systems are useful for a variety of reasons such as creating new-to-nature dynamic materials, producing value-added chemicals, constructing metabolic modules for synthetic cells, and even enabling molecular computation. In this review, we offer insights into the chemical characteristics of ERNs while also delving into their potential applications and associated challenges.

Interlinking spatial dimensions and kinetic processes in dissipative materials to create synthetic systems with lifelike functionality

Biological systems spontaneously convert energy input into the actions necessary to survive. Motivated by the efficacy of these processes, researchers aim to forge materials systems that exhibit the self-sustained and autonomous functionality found in nature. Success in this effort will require synthetic analogues of the following: a metabolism to generate energy, a vasculature to transport energy and materials, a nervous system to transmit 'commands', a musculoskeletal system to translate commands into physical action, regulatory networks to monitor the entire enterprise, and a mechanism to convert 'nutrients' into growing materials. Design rules must interconnect the material's structural and kinetic properties over ranges of length (that can vary from the nano- to mesoscale) and timescales to enable local energy dissipations to power global functionality. Moreover, by harnessing dynamic interactions intrinsic to the material, the system itself can perform the work needed for its own functionality. Here, we assess the advances and challenges in dissipative materials design and at the same time aim to spur developments in next-generation functional, 'living' materials.

Engineering confined fluids to autonomously assemble hierarchical 3D structures

The inherent coupling of chemical and mechanical behavior in fluid-filled microchambers enables the fluid to autonomously perform work, which in turn can direct the self-organization of objects immersed in the solution. Using theory and simulations, we show that the combination of diffusioosmotic and buoyancy mechanisms produce independently controlled, respective fluid flows: one generated by confining surfaces and the other in the bulk of the solution. With both flows present, the fluid can autonomously join 2D, disconnected pieces to a chemically active, "sticky" base and then fold the resulting layer into regular 3D shapes (e.g. pyramids, tetrahedrons, and cubes). Here, the fluid itself performs the work of construction and thus, this process does not require extensive external machinery. If several sticky bases are localized on the bottom surface, the process can be parallelized, with the fluid simultaneously forming multiple structures of the same or different geometries. Hence, this approach can facilitate the relatively low-cost, mass production of 3D micron to millimeter-sized structures. Formed in an aqueous solution, the assembled structures could be compatible with biological environments, and thus, potentially useful in medical and biochemical applications.

Enzyme-Powered Tubular Microrobotic Jets as Bioinspired Micropumps for Active Transmembrane Drug Transport

In nature, there exist a variety of transport proteins on cell membranes capable of actively moving cargos across biological membranes, which plays a vital role in the living activities of cells. Emulating such biological pumps in artificial systems may bring in-depth insights on the principles and functions of cell behaviors. However, it poses great challenges due to difficulty in the sophisticated construction of active channels at the cellular scale. Here, we report the development of bionic micropumps for active transmembrane transportation of molecular cargos across living cells that is realized by enzyme-powered microrobotic jets. By immobilizing urease onto the surface of a silica-based microtube, the prepared microjet is capable of catalyzing the decomposition of urea in surrounding environments and generating microfluidic flow through the inside channel for self-propulsion, which is verified by both numerical simulation and experimental results. Therefore, once naturally endocytosed by the cell, the microjet enables the diffusion and, more importantly, active transportation of molecular substances between the extracellular and intracellular ends with the assistance of generated microflow, thus serving as an artificial biomimetic micropump. Furthermore, by constructing enzymatic micropumps on cancer cell membranes, enhanced delivery of anticancer doxorubicin into cells as well as improved killing efficacy are achieved, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the active transmembrane drug transport strategy in cancer treatment. This work not only extends the applications of micro/nanomachines in biomedical fields but also provides a promising platform for future cell biology research at cellular and subcellular scales.

Chemically Driven Multimodal Locomotion of Active, Flexible Sheets

The inhibitor-promoter feedback loop is a vital component in regulatory pathways that controls functionality in living systems. In this loop, the production of chemical A at one site promotes the production of chemical B at another site, but B inhibits the production of A. In solution, differences in the volumes of the reactants and products of this reaction can generate buoyancy-driven fluid flows, which will deform neighboring soft material. To probe the intrinsic interrelationship among chemistry, hydrodynamics, and fluid-structure interactions, we model a bio-inspired system where a flexible sheet immersed in solution encompasses two spatially separated catalytic patches, which drive the A-B inhibitor-promotor reaction. The convective rolls of fluid generated above the patches can circulate inward or outward depending on the chemical environment. Within the regime displaying chemical oscillations, the dynamic fluid-structure interactions morph the shape of the sheet to periodically "fly", "crawl", or "swim" along the bottom of the confining chamber, revealing an intimate coupling between form and function in this system. The oscillations in the sheet's motion in turn affect the chemical oscillations in the solution. In the regime with non-oscillatory chemistry, the induced flow still morphs the shape of the sheet, but now, the fluid simply translates the sheet along the length of the chamber. The findings reveal the potential for enzymatic reactions in the body to generate hydrodynamic behavior that modifies the shape of neighboring soft tissue, which in turn modifies both the fluid dynamics and the enzymatic reaction. The findings indicate that this non-linear dynamic behavior can be playing a critical role in the functioning of regulatory pathways in living systems.

Spatial programming of self-organizing chemical systems using sustained physicochemical gradients from reaction, diffusion and hydrodynamics

Living organisms employ chemical self-organization to build structures, and inspire new strategies to design synthetic systems that spontaneously take a particular form, via a combination of integrated chemical reactions, assembly pathways and physicochemical processes. However, spatial programmability that is required to direct such self-organization is a challenge to control. Thermodynamic equilibrium typically brings about a homogeneous solution, or equilibrium structures such as supramolecular complexes and crystals. This perspective addresses out-of-equilibrium gradients that can be driven by coupling chemical reaction, diffusion and hydrodynamics, and provide spatial differentiation in the self-organization of molecular, ionic or colloidal building blocks in solution. These physicochemical gradients are required to (1) direct the organization from the starting conditions (e.g. a homogeneous solution), and (2) sustain the organization, to prevent it from decaying towards thermodynamic equilibrium. We highlight four different concepts that can be used as a design principle to establish such self-organization, using chemical reactions as a driving force to sustain the gradient and, ultimately, program the characteristics of the gradient: (1) reaction-diffusion coupling; (2) reaction-convection; (3) the Marangoni effect and (4) diffusiophoresis. Furthermore, we outline their potential as attractive pathways to translate chemical reactions and molecular/colloidal assembly into organization of patterns in solution, (dynamic) self-assembled architectures and collectively moving swarms at the micro-, meso- and macroscale, exemplified by recent demonstrations in the literature.

Regulating Spatial Localization and Reactivity Biasness of DNAzymes by Metal Ions and Oligonucleotides

Chemical gradient sensing behavior of catalytically active colloids and enzymes is an area of immense interest owing to their importance in understanding fundamental spatiotemporal complexity pattern in living systems and designing of dynamic materials. Herein, we have shown peroxidase activity of DNAzyme (G-quadruplex-hemin complex tagged in a micron-sized glass bead) can be modulated by metal ions and metal ion-binding oligonucleotides. Next we demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically that the localization and product formation ability of the DNAzyme containing particle remains biased to the more catalytically active zone where concentration of metal ion (Hg2+) inhibitor is low. Interestingly, this biased localization can be broken by introduction of Hg2+ binding oligonucleotide in the system. Additionally, macroscopically asymmetric catalytic product distributed zone has also been achieved on this process, showing possibility in regulation in autonomous spatially controlled chemical process. This demonstration of autonomous modulation of the localization pattern and spatially specific enhanced product forming ability of DNAzymes will further enable in designing of responsive nucleic acid-based motile materials and surfaces.

From radial to unidirectional water pumping in zeta-potential modulated Nafion nanostructures

Chemically propelled micropumps are promising wireless systems to autonomously drive fluid flows for many applications. However, many of these systems are activated by nocuous chemical fuels, cannot operate at high salt concentrations, or have difficulty for controlling flow directionality. In this work we report on a self-driven polymer micropump fueled by salt which can trigger both radial and unidirectional fluid flows. The micropump is based on the cation-exchanger Nafion, which produces chemical gradients and local electric fields capable to trigger interfacial electroosmotic flows. Unidirectional pumping is predicted by simulations and achieved experimentally by nanostructuring Nafion into microarrays with a fine tune modulation of surrounding surface zeta potentials. Nafion micropumps work in a wide range of salt concentrations, are reusable, and can be fueled by different salt cations. We demonstrate that they work with the common water-contaminant cadmium, using the own capture of this ion as fuel to drive fluid pumping. Thus, this system has potential for efficient and fast water purification strategies for environmental remediation. Unidirectional Nafion pumps also hold promise for effective analyte delivery or preconcentration for (bio)sensing assays.

Solutal-buoyancy-driven intertwining and rotation of patterned elastic sheets

The intertwining of strands into 3D spirals is ubiquitous in biology, enabling functions from information storage to maintenance of cell structure and directed locomotion. In synthetic systems, entwined fibers can provide superior mechanical properties and act as artificial muscle or structural reinforcements. Unlike structures in nature, the entwinement of synthetic materials typically requires application of an external stimulus, such as mechanical actuation, light, or a magnetic field. Herein, we use computational modeling to design microscale sheets that mimic biology by transducing chemical energy into mechanical action, and thereby self-organize and interlink into 3D spirals, which spontaneously rotate. These flexible sheets are immersed in a fluid-filled microchamber that encompasses an immobilized patch of catalysts on the bottom wall. The sheets themselves can be passive or active (coated with catalyst). Catalytic reactions in the solution generate products that occupy different volumes than the reactants. The resulting density variations exert a force on the fluid (solutal buoyancy force) that causes motion, which in turn drives the interlinking and collective swirling of the sheets. The individual sheets do not rotate; rotation only occurs when the sheets are interlinked. This level of autonomous, coordinated 3D structural organization, intertwining, and rotation is unexpected in synthetic materials systems operating without external controls. Using physical arguments, we identify dimensionless ratios that are useful in scaling these ideas to other systems. These findings are valuable for creating materials that act as "machines", and directing soft matter to undergo self-sustained, multistep assembly that is governed by intrinsic chemical reactions.

Self-Generated Convective Flows Enhance the Rates of Chemical Reactions

In chemical solutions, the products of catalytic reactions can occupy different volumes compared to the reactants and thus give rise to local density variations in the fluid. These density variations generate solutal buoyancy forces, which are exerted on the fluid and thus "pump" the fluid to flow. Herein, we examine if the reaction-induced pumping accelerates the chemical reaction by transporting the reactants to the catalyst at a rate faster than passive diffusion. Using both simulations and experiments, we show a significant increase in reaction rate when reaction-generated convective flow is present. In effect, through a feedback loop, catalysts speed up reactions not only by lowering the energy barrier but also by increasing the collision frequency between the reactants and the catalyst.

Fluid actuation and buoyancy driven oscillation by enzyme-immobilized microfluidic microcapsules

Mimicking microorganism's locomotion and actuation under fluid is difficult to realize. To better comprehend the motility in non-living matter, self-propelled synthetic systems are being developed as a fast-growing area of research. Inspired by the self-powered enzyme micropumps where the enzyme catalysis was harnessed to create motion, herein, enzyme-immobilized microfluidic microcapsules (MCs) were used as a microscale engine to maneuver the fluid flow. The fluid actuation was tuned by various parameters such as substrate concentration, reaction rate, diameter of MCs and the population of the MCs inside the flow chamber. The same MCs, when suspended in a solution, showed buoyancy driven motility by creating oxygen bubbles via an enzymatic reaction and the velocity of the MCs was directly dependent on the number of nucleated oxygen bubbles generated on the MC surface.

Chemically Triggered Coalescence and Reactivity of Droplet Fibers

We describe the role of functional polymer surfactants in the construction and triggered collapse of droplet-based fibers and the use of these macroscopic supracolloidal structures for reagent compartmentalization. Copolymer surfactants containing both zwitterionic and tertiary amine pendent groups were synthesized for stabilization of oil-in-water droplets, in which the self-adherent properties of the selected zwitterions impart interdroplet adherence, while the amine groups provide access to pH-triggered coalescence. Macroscopic fibers, obtained by droplet extrusion, were prepared with reagents embedded in spatially distinct components of the fibers. Upon acidification of the continuous aqueous phase, protonation of the polymer surfactants increases their hydrophilicity and causes rapid fiber disruption and collapse. Cross-linked versions of these supracolloidal fibers were stable upon acidification and appeared to direct interdroplet passage of encapsulants along the fiber length. Overall, these functional, responsive emulsions provide a strategy to impart on-demand chemical reactivity to soft materials structures that benefits from the interfacial chemistry of the system.

Chemical pumps and flexible sheets spontaneously form self-regulating oscillators in solution

The synchronization of self-oscillating systems is vital to various biological functions, from the coordinated contraction of heart muscle to the self-organization of slime molds. Through modeling, we design bioinspired materials systems that spontaneously form shape-changing self-oscillators, which communicate to synchronize both their temporal and spatial behavior. Here, catalytic reactions at the bottom of a fluid-filled chamber and on mobile, flexible sheets generate the energy to "pump" the surrounding fluid, which also transports the immersed sheets. The sheets exert a force on the fluid that modifies the flow, which in turn affects the shape and movement of the flexible sheets. This feedback enables a single coated (active) and even an uncoated (passive) sheet to undergo self-oscillation, displaying different oscillatory modes with increases in the catalytic reaction rate. Two sheets (active or passive) introduce excluded volume, steric interactions. This distinctive combination of the hydrodynamic, fluid-structure, and steric interactions causes the sheets to form coupled oscillators, whose motion is synchronized in time and space. We develop a heuristic model that rationalizes this behavior. These coupled self-oscillators exhibit rich and tunable phase dynamics, which depends on the sheets' initial placement, coverage by catalyst and relative size. Moreover, through variations in the reactant concentration, the system can switch between the different oscillatory modes. This breadth of dynamic behavior expands the functionality of the coupled oscillators, enabling soft robots to display a variety of self-sustained, self-regulating moves.

Swarming behavior and in vivo monitoring of enzymatic nanomotors within the bladder

Enzyme-powered nanomotors are an exciting technology for biomedical applications due to their ability to navigate within biological environments using endogenous fuels. However, limited studies into their collective behavior and demonstrations of tracking enzyme nanomotors in vivo have hindered progress toward their clinical translation. Here, we report the swarming behavior of urease-powered nanomotors and its tracking using positron emission tomography (PET), both in vitro and in vivo. For that, mesoporous silica nanoparticles containing urease enzymes and gold nanoparticles were used as nanomotors. To image them, nanomotors were radiolabeled with either ¹²⁴I on gold nanoparticles or ¹⁸F-labeled prosthetic group to urease. In vitro experiments showed enhanced fluid mixing and collective migration of nanomotors, demonstrating higher capability to swim across complex paths inside microfabricated phantoms, compared with inactive nanomotors. In vivo intravenous administration in mice confirmed their biocompatibility at the administered dose and the suitability of PET to quantitatively track nanomotors in vivo. Furthermore, nanomotors were administered directly into the bladder of mice by intravesical injection. When injected with the fuel, urea, a homogeneous distribution was observed even after the entrance of fresh urine. By contrast, control experiments using nonmotile nanomotors (i.e., without fuel or without urease) resulted in sustained phase separation, indicating that the nanomotors' self-propulsion promotes convection and mixing in living reservoirs. Active collective dynamics, together with the medical imaging tracking, constitute a key milestone and a step forward in the field of biomedical nanorobotics, paving the way toward their use in theranostic applications.

Achieving Independent Control over Surface and Bulk Fluid Flows in Microchambers

To fully realize the potential of microfluidic platforms as useful diagnostic tools, the devices must be sufficiently portable that they function at the point-of-care, as well as remote and resource-poor locations. Using both modeling and experiments, here we develop a standalone fluidic device that is driven by light and operates without the need for external electrical or mechanical pumps. The light initiates a photochemical reaction in the solution; the release of chemical energy from the reaction is transduced into the spontaneous motion of the surrounding fluid. The generated flow is driven by two simultaneously occurring mechanisms: solutal buoyancy that controls the motion of the bulk fluid and diffusioosmosis that regulates motion near the bottom of the chamber. Consequently, the bulk and surface fluid flows can be directed independently of one another. We demonstrate that this exceptional degree of spatiotemporal control provides a new method for autonomously transporting different-sized particles in opposite directions within the chamber. Thus, one device can be used to both separate the particles and drive them to different locations for further processing or analysis. This property is particularly useful for analyzing fluids that contain multiple contaminants or disease agents. Because this system relies on intrinsic hydrodynamic interactions initiated by a portable, small-scale source of light, the device provides the desired level of mobility vital for the next generation of functional fluidic platforms.

The impact of geometrical confinement in a slab on the behavior of tracer particles near active glucose oxidase micropump

Patches of surface-immobilized and catalytically active enzyme, immersed into a solution with the corresponding substrate, induce flow in the solution. Such systems are currently investigated as a promising direction in the development of self-powered micropumps that could operate autonomously within microfluidic devices. Here, we investigate the influence of confinement, within a slab of height H, on the response exhibited by silica tracer particles sedimented near a chemically active glucose oxidase patch which is immersed into a glucose solution of very low ionic strength. Irrespective of the value H, within the range explored in this study, a region depleted of tracers forms around the patch. When H is not much larger than the radius of the patch, the rate of growth of the depletion zone depends on H; somewhat surprisingly, this dependence is influenced by the glucose concentration. The results are discussed within the context of a simple model for a chemically active patch.

Light-Induced Dynamic Control of Particle Motion in Fluid-Filled Microchannels

The design of remotely programmable microfluidic systems with controlled fluid flow and particle transport is a significant challenge. Herein, we describe a system that harnesses the intrinsic thermal response of a fluid to spontaneously pump solutions and regulate the transport of immersed microparticles. Irradiating a silver-coated channel with ultraviolet (UV) light generates local convective vortexes, which, in addition to the externally imposed flow, can be used to guide particles along specific trajectories or to arrest their motion. The method provides the distinct advantage that the flow and the associated convective patterns can be dynamically altered by relocating the source of UV light. Moreover, the flow can be initiated and terminated "on-demand" by turning the light on or off.

Silver-Based Self-Powered pH-Sensitive Pump and Sensor

Nonmechanical nano/microscale pumps that provide precise control over flow rate without the aid of an external power source and that are capable of turning on in response to specific analytes in solution are needed for the next generation of smart micro- and nanoscale devices. Herein, a self-powered chemically driven silver micropump is reported that is based on the two-step catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide, H₂O₂. The pumping direction and speed can be controlled by modulating the solution pH, and modeling and theory allow for the kinetics of the reaction steps to be connected to the fluid velocity. In addition, by changing the pH dynamically using glucose oxidase (GOx)-catalyzed oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid, the direction of fluid pumping can be altered in situ, allowing for the design of a glucose sensor. This work underscores the versatility of catalytic pumps and their ability to function as sensors.

Controlling the Spatiotemporal Transport of Particles in Fluid-Filled Microchambers

The development of microscale devices that autonomously perform multistep processes is vital to advancing the use of microfluidics in industrial applications. Such advances can potentially be achieved through the use of "chemical pumps" that transduce the energy from inherent catalytic reactions into fluid flow within microchambers, without the need for extraneous external equipment. Using computational modeling, we focus on arrangements of multiple chemical pumps that are formed by anchoring patches of different enzymes onto the floor of a fluid-filled chamber. With the addition of the appropriate reactants, only one of the enzymatic patches is activated and thereby generates fluid flow centered about that patch. These flows drive the self-assembly of microparticles in the solution and localize the particles onto the activated patches. By varying the spatial arrangement of the enzymatic patches, and the sequence in which the appropriate reactants are added to the solution, we realize spatiotemporal control over the fluid flow and the sequential transport of microparticles from one patch to another. The order in which the particles visit the different patches can be altered by varying the sequence in which the reactants are added to the solution. By harnessing catalytic cascade reactions, where the product of one reaction is the reactant for the next, we achieve directed transport between the patches with the addition of just one reactant, which initiates the catalytic cascade. Through these studies, we show how the trajectory of the particles' motion among different "stations" can be readily regulated through intrinsic catalytic reactions and thus, provide guidelines for creating fluidic devices that perform multistep reactions in an autonomous, self-sustained manner.

Passive micropumping in microfluidics for point-of-care testing

Suitable micropumping methods for flow control represent a major technical hurdle in the development of microfluidic systems for point-of-care testing (POCT). Passive micropumping for point-of-care microfluidic systems provides a promising solution to such challenges, in particular, passive micropumping based on capillary force and air transfer based on the air solubility and air permeability of specific materials. There have been numerous developments and applications of micropumping techniques that are relevant to the use in POCT. Compared with active pumping methods such as syringe pumps or pressure pumps, where the flow rate can be well-tuned independent of the design of the microfluidic devices or the property of the liquids, most passive micropumping methods still suffer flow-control problems. For example, the flow rate may be set once the device has been made, and the properties of liquids may affect the flow rate. However, the advantages of passive micropumping, which include simplicity, ease of use, and low cost, make it the best choice for POCT. Here, we present a systematic review of different types of passive micropumping that are suitable for POCT, alongside existing applications based on passive micropumping. Future trends in passive micropumping are also discussed.

Glucose Oxidase Micropumps: Multi-Faceted Effects of Chemical Activity on Tracer Particles Near the Solid–Liquid Interface

We report the development of glucose oxidase pumps characterized by small lateral dimensions (≈200 μ m). We studied the effects of the activity of the enzyme pump on silica particles (“tracers”) sedimented around the enzyme pump/patch. Once the activity of the pump was turned on (i.e., the glucose substrate was added to the solution), in-plane motion of the tracers away from the enzyme patch, as well as the emergence of an in-plane region around the patch which was depleted by tracers, was observed. The lateral extent of this depletion zone increased in time at a rate dependent both on the glucose concentration and on the areal density of the enzyme in the patch. We argue that, when the tracers were very near the wall, their motion and the emergence of the depletion zone were most likely the result of diffusiophoresis and drag by osmotic flows induced at the wall, rather than that of drag by a solutal buoyancy driven convective flow. We infer that, for the glucose oxidase enzymatic pumps, bulk (solutal buoyancy), as previously reported, as well as surface (osmotic) driven flows coexist and have to be explicitly accounted for. It seems plausible to assume that this is the case in general for enzyme pumps, and these complementary effects should be considered in the design of applications, e.g., stirring or sensing inside microfluidic systems, based on such pumps.

Dynamics near planar walls for various model self-phoretic particles

For chemically active particles suspended in a liquid solution and moving by self-phoresis, the dynamics near chemically inert, planar walls is studied theoretically by employing various choices for the activity function, i.e., the spatial distribution of the sites where various chemical reactions take place. We focus on the case of solutions composed of electrically neutral species. This analysis extends previous studies of the case that the chemical activity can be modeled effectively as the release of a "product" molecular species from parts of the surface of the particle by accounting for annihilation of the product molecules by chemical reactions, either on the rest of the surface of the particle or in the volume of the surrounding solution. We show that, for the models considered here, the emergence of "sliding" and "hovering" wall-bound states is a generic, robust feature. However, the details of these states, such as the range of parameters within which they occur, depend on the specific model for the activity function. Additionally, in certain cases there is a reversal of the direction of the motion compared to the one observed if the particle is far away from the wall. We have also studied the changes of the dynamics induced by a direct interaction between the particle and the wall by including a short-ranged repulsive component to the interaction in addition to the steric one (a procedure often employed in numerical simulations of active colloids). Upon increasing the strength of this additional component, while keeping its range fixed, significant qualitative changes occur in the phase portraits of the dynamics near the wall: for sufficiently strong short-ranged repulsion, the sliding steady states of the dynamics are transformed into hovering states. Furthermore, our studies provide evidence for an additional "oscillatory" wall-bound steady state of motion for chemically active particles due to a strong, short-ranged, and direct repulsion. This kind of particle translates along the wall at a distance from it which oscillates between a minimum and a maximum.
